Speaking Part

  • Well, …
  • To tell the truth … —
  • To be honest …
  • You know, …
  • As far as I know, …
  • As far as I can see, …
  • Actually, …
  • The thing is that …
  • It’s a kind of …
  • I am sure that …
  • I believe that …
  • I think that …
  • In my opinion …
  • Let me see.
  • I am not quite sure I know the right answer, … —
  • Without any doubt, … —
  • It goes without saying that …
  • Firstly, … —
  • Secondly, … —
  • Thirdly, … —
  • Besides, … —
  • Moreover, … —
  • Last but not least, … —
  • I should say / admit that …
  • By the way, …
  • All in all, …
  • In conclusion, …

To my mind …

Task 1

You are going to read the text aloud . You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position but there was no proof that the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It’s worth mentioning that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twenty-four and had no formal education in astronomy. However he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was suggested by an 11-year-old British girl.

Electronic assistant: How old are you?

Student: I am 14 (15) years old.

Electronic assistant: How many times a week do you do sports?

Student: To tell the truth, I am not very good at doing sports. Sometimes I go cycling with my friends at weekends. And of course, I have got three PT classes a week at school and I think it is quite enough for me.

Electronic assistant: What sport is the most popular with teenagers in your region?

Student: Well, I think volleyball is the most popular sport with teens in our region. Practically everyone knows the rules of this game. It can be played both indoors and outdoors. Volleyball competitions often take place in our region. And I am very proud that our men’s team “Belogorie” won the title of Russian Champion eight times.

Electronic assistant: What sports facilities are available in the place where you live?

Student: The thing is that I live in a small village that’s why there is a lack of sports facilities here. Nevertheless we have got a stadium /ˈsteɪdiəm/ and a new sports center where people can do different workouts, play football, volleyball and tennis. Also there are sports grounds near each school. Unfortunately we haven’t got a swimming pool in my settlement.

Electronic assistant: Why do you think it is important to keep fit?

Student: Without any doubt /daʊt/, keeping fit is very important for your body. If you do regular exercises, you can stay healthy, attractive and flexible for a long time. You can also increase your energy levels and improve your mood and memory.

Electronic assistant: What would you advise a person who wants to keep fit?

Student: To my mind, the best way to keep fit is to do regular exercises, no matter what they are: jogging, yoga or riding a bike. Secondly, you should eat healthy food and drink lots of water. Last but not least, you should sleep enough.

Electronic assistant: This is the end of the survey. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Enjoy watching!

Nowadays lots of people enjoy taking pictures. Some of them are professional photographers, while others consider it as a hobby.

Actually, our life is full of bright events and unusual moments that’s why people take pictures to capture them. For example, weddings, the birth of a child, visits to different countries, starting or leaving school are much photographed /ˈfəʊtəɡrɑːf/. (2)

Taking pictures is more popular today because practically everyone has a camera built in the cell phone. To be honest, digital cameras are very easy to operate. It’s great that you can look through your snapshot (снимок) immediately and if you don’t like it, you can delete it and take another one. In the past most people could not even afford [əˈfɔːd] a camera. Moreover, the process of taking pictures and printing them was very hard (difficult, time-consuming). (5)

As for me, I am fond of photography and have got a professional camera. The best photo I have ever taken is the photo of the Eiffel [´aifəl] Tower which is the symbol of Paris. I did it three years ago during my summer holiday. (3)

All in all, I should say that people take pictures to remember the best moments of their life forever.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about photography. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.
Remember to say:
 why people like taking pictures
 why taking photos is more popular today than it was in the past
 what the best photo you have ever taken is
You have to talk continuously.

Now I’m going to give a talk about photography.

  1. In my opinion , taking pictures is really popular now. Many of my friends and classmates have cameras on their mobiles which they use to take photos of everything they like.
  1. Today taking photos is more popular than it was in the past because cameras are less expensive and many people can afford them. You can even take pictures using camera on your mobile phone! Also , there are a lot of social networks, for example Facebook or Vkontakte where people post photos and share them with friends.
  2. Personally I have one really great photo. It was taken last year in Rome. You can see my mother and me in it. We are standing near a beautiful fountain in the center of the city. The sun is shining and we are smiling.

In the end I would like to say that taking photos helps us save one of the most precious things in life – our memories, which can always be with us when we look at this or that picture.

That’s all what I wanted to say.

Грамматика – употреблены три времени – Present Simple, Present Continuous (при описании фото) и Past Simple, сравнительная степень (less expensive), превосходная степень (the most precious), пассивный залог (was taken), модальный глагол can.

Computers have been around for over sixty years and they have changed our lives. It is a well-known fact that the first modern computer began operating in the USA in 1945. This huge machine was the size of a large room. It was also very slow and so complicated to use that only an expert could operate it. That’s very different from modern PCs which are so user-friendly that anyone can use them.

During the 1970s, tiny electronic microchips became more common. By the 1980s and 90s, home computers were becoming smaller, faster and cheaper. As a result, more people bought them, so computers became more wide-spread.

Activate B1)

Например, в задании написано: «You are going to give a talk about films». Вступительная фраза такая же: «I’m going to give a talk about films».

Можно сказать: «I’ve come to the end of my talk. Thank you for listening», либо «This is the end of my talk. Thank you for listening».

1) вступительная фраза;
2) 1 аспект;
3) 2 аспект;
4) 3 аспект;

Например, освещая первый аспект темы «Фильмы», который может быть сформулирован как «what kinds of films modern teenagers enjoy», можно вставить ни к чему не обязывающее «actually», или скажем, «in fact», «to tell the truth». Например: «To tell the truth, modern teenagers enjoy different kinds of films. Thrillers, comedies, adventures, science fiction films and even horrors are among teenagers’ favourite films. Besides, some of teens prefer watching action films and, unfortunately, crime films».

Everybody knows that our appearance matters in what people think about us. Appearance is important not only in a romantic relationship but also in politics. Appearance is not all about beauty.

The moment we see a person our mind starts evaluating their personality according to their looks. What especially matters is the person"s face.

This means that the impression somebody"s face makes on others can cost the person his or her political career.

When we vote for a candidate we think that we are weighing his or her personal qualities. In fact, we are examining their face.

Research has shown that if a candidate"s appearance displays competence, power and leadership, but not beauty or good looks, it can cause a political victory or defeat.

These findings are really important.

British family has recently celebrated the birth of their 18th child.

It was a girl and her brothers and sisters have welcomed their new sister.

Her eldest brother is 26 and the parents already have two grandchildren.

The family announced the birth of the child on their family website.

They described the girl as "beautiful". The family owns a bakery and hopes the children will take over the family business.

It looks as if the era when the average British family would have only two or three children is over.

In Britain there are more families with four children than anywhere else in Europe. Social scientists say that this is the result of immigration into the country of families from Asia and Africa.

Camels are famous because they can walk further across deserts than other kind of animal.

Britain’s national sport is not, as most people think, football but the Lottery. It may also be

surprising to know that the people who gamble most on the Lottery are not well-off but

mostly working class people who hope that by winning the Lottery they will change their lives. Even though everyone who buys a lottery ticket knows that the chances of them becoming a millionaire are incredibly slim, it doesn’t stop British people from spending huge money on lottery tickets and trying their luck every week. You can ‘break the ice’ with strangers by talking about the weather. “Shame about the weather”, “Is it still raining?” or “Bit chilly today, don’t you think?” Another good topic for conversation is work. However, English people do not like talking about the politics except in a general way. And you should avoid asking them what political party they vote for. It is not appropriate to ask people about their age or how much they earn.

People who travel through the thick Brazilian jungle may arrive at a shocking place - a small American-style town with streets, houses, a police station and even a golf course. The difference is that here in the middle of the rainforest there are no people. Only monkeys jumping on the rooftops. The town was built in the "20s and its inhabitants abandoned it in the 1940s. The famous car maker Henry Ford bought this land and wanted to build a factory there to produce rubber for his cars. The workers were moved there from Michigan. The rules of life in the town were very strict and the workers did not like it. Besides, the rubber production was very slow and the project failed.

Mobile phones have become very popular and texting is taking the lead. In many situations sending text messages called SMS via the telephone is more preferable than emailing somebody. Unlike emails, SMS texts are delivered alerting the telephone owner to the arrival of a new message. Not many of us check their email on a regular basis while SMS texts have a sense of urgency and we must answer them at once. Besides, texting is used for personal contacts while emails are often the channel of business communication. A great advantage of SMS texts is that they can be sent from any location thanks to the mobile device in your pocket. You do not have to sit in front of a computer or carry a heavy laptop with you.

Chocolate comes from cacao trees. These trees are from South and Central America but today they grow in other parts of the world too. Cacao trees can only grow in countries with a tropical climate. Cacao trees are about 6 metres tall and have big green leaves. Chocolate is made from cacao beans. The beans are the fruit of the tree. In West Africa all the families help to cut the cacao pods from the trees. Then the beans must ferment for 5 to 8 days. After fermentation the beans must dry in the sun. Then ships take the cacao beans in sacks to countries that make chocolate, such as the USA and England.

The botanic name of the cacao tree is Theobroma cacao. It means “food of the gods”. Some scientists believe that chocolate may help people live longer. But all agree that chocolate makes people happy!

The mystery of why trees don’t stop growing is still unsolved. Human beings usually stop growing sometime during their teens.

Many animals reach full growth within a year. Others are fully grown in just a few years. Birds and insects also stop growing at a certain age. But trees keep growing as long as they live.

Trees live, grow, and reproduce themselves by an amazing process.

The thousands of leaves put forth by the tree breathe for it and manufacture its food. Its root system gathers minerals and vast quantities of water.

To carry this water to the leaves, the tree is equipped with an intricate circulation system that extends upward from the millions of root hairs through the trunk and branches.

Temperatures are rising around the world, particularly in the Arctic. In the past 30 years,

650,000 square kilometers of ice have disappeared. Rising sea levels mean that many

countries are going to lose part of their coastline. Unless we take action, some countries will

completely disappear. Scientists think that if temperatures continue to increase, we will see

hotter summers, milder winters and more tropical storms, which might become more

dangerous. They also say that if global temperatures rise by just two degrees, 30% of all land living creatures may become extinct. The ten hottest years ever recorded have all been since 1990. Scientists say that unless we reduce the amount of pollution we are creating,

temperatures could be five degrees higher by the end of the century.

Test 1 FAMILY LIFE

A British family has recently celebrated the birth of their 18th child. It was a girl and her brothers and sisters have welcomed their new sister. Her eldest brother is 26 and the parents already have two grandchildren. The family announced the birth of the child on their family website. They described the girl as “beautiful”. The family owns a bakery and hopes the children will take over the family business. It looks as if the era when the average British family would have only two or three children is over. In Britain there are more families with four children than anywhere else in Europe. Social scientists say that this is the result of immigration into the country of families from Asia and Africa.

Everybody knows that our appearance matters in what people think about us. Appearance is important not only in a romantic relationship but also in politics. Appearance is not all about beauty. The moment we see a person our mind starts evaluating their personality according to their looks. What especially matters is the persons face. This means that the impression somebody’s face makes on others can cost the person his or her political career. When we vote for a candidate we think that we are weighing his or her personal qualities. In fact, we are examining their face. Research has shown that if a candidate’s appearance displays competence, power and leadership, but not beauty or good looks, it can cause a political victory or defeat.
