Work instructions

The oral part of KIM OGE in English includes 3 tasks.

Exercise 1

Reading aloud a short text popular science character.

Preparation time - 1.5 minutes.

Tips:

  • Read articles about the rules of reading and sounds in English. Memorize them and apply them during the assignments on the exam.
  • Learn the rules for placing pauses, intonation and logical stress in English.

I suggest you watch a video with recommendations to prepare for the implementation of Task 1 of the Oral part of the Unified State Examination (Grade 11). The tasks for the OGE and the USE are almost identical - reading the text aloud. Therefore, the video will be useful for everyone who is preparing for the final certification in English.

Task 2

You are invited to take participation in a conditional dialogue-questioning: Answer the six phone survey questions you heard in the audio.

Tips:

  • Listen to English speech as often as possible, develop the skill of listening to English speech.
  • Complete the tasks published on the FIPI website.
  • Be sure to record your responses on a tape recorder to make sure you fit within the allotted response. time - 40 seconds for each question. You can also analyze your phonetic and grammatical mistakes made during the answer.

Attention!

Questions are asked only once!

Question text does not appear on the screen!

Taking notes during the exam is not allowed!

The introductory part of Task 2 for different CMM options is the same, with the exception of the sentence, which will indicate topic of your conversation.

Important!

Do not press the button to move to the next question, even if you missed the answer in a shorter time, or did not answer the question at all. Wait for the announcer to say the next question.

From last year’s experience, I can say that when you click on the “NEXT” button, the transition was not to the next question of Task 2, but immediately to Task 3. Therefore, the student lost points on questions from Task 2, which simply did not heard.

Task 3

You need to build a connected monologue on a specific topic based on a plan.

Preparation time - 1.5 minutes.

Attention!!!

AT 2016 and 2017 Task 3 was accompanied by a photograph, which no need for a description th. It simply served as a visual reference for generating ideas for your monologue.

AT 2018 year Task 3 is presented NO photo!

Your monologue must contain opening and closing phrases related to the topic of the speech. The total volume of the statement should be 10 - 12 offers.

Your speech should be natural and spontaneous (no memorized long sentences from topics). To do this, use the following words and expressions in your answer:

  • Well, ... - Well ...
  • To tell the truth ... - To be honest ...
  • To be honest ... - To be honest ...
  • You know, ... - You know ...
  • As far as I know, ... - As far as I know ...
  • As far as I can see, ... - As far as I can tell ...
  • Actually, ... - Actually ...
  • The thing is that ... - The fact is that ...
  • It's a kind of ... - It's something like ...
  • I am sure that ... - I am sure that ...
  • I believe that ... - I believe that ...
  • I think that ... - I think that ...
  • In my opinion ... - In my opinion ...
  • Let me see. - Let me see.
  • I am not quite sure I know the right answer, …
  • Without any doubt, ... - Without a doubt ...
  • It goes without saying that ... - It is clear without words ... / Of course ...

  • I should say / admit that ... - I want to say / note that ...
  • By the way, ... - By the way, ...
  • All in all, ... - In general ...
  • In conclusion, ... - In conclusion ...

Get rid of archaisms! To my mind… almost never found in modern English.

The total response time of one OGE participant (including preparation time) - 15 minutes. Each subsequent task is issued after the completion of the previous task. All responses are audio-recorded. Try to fully complete the assigned tasks, speak clearly and clearly, do not deviate from the topic and follow the proposed response plan. This way you can get the most points.

Practical performance of tasks

Well, now let's proceed to the practical implementation of the tasks of the Oral part from the Demonstration version of the OGE 2017. Please note that this article suggests exemplary options performance of tasks, taking into account personal experience of my students. Task 1

You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read thetext silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will nothave more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position but there was no proof that the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It's worth mentioning that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twenty-four and had no formal education in astronomy. However, he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was suggested by an 11-year-old British girl.

electronic assistant: How old are you?

student: I am 14 (15) years old .

electronic assistant: How many times a week do you do sports?

Student: To tell the truth I am not very good at doing sports. Sometimes I go cycling with my friends at weekends. And of course, I have got three PT classes a week at school and I think it is quite enough for me.

Electronic assistant: What sport is the most popular with teenagers in your region?

Student: Well, I think volleyball is the most popular sport with teens in our region. Practically everyone knows the rules of this game. It can be played both indoors and outdoors. Volleyball competitions often take place in our region. And I am very proud that our men’s team “Belogorie” won the title of Russian Champion eight times.

electronic assistant: What sports facilities are available in the place where you live?

S student: The thing is that I live in a small village that's why there is a lack of sports facilities here. Nevertheless we have got a stadium /ˈsteɪdiəm/ and a new sports center where people can do different workouts, play football, volleyball and tennis. Also there are sports grounds near each school. Unfortunately we haven't got a swimming pool in my settlement.

Task 3

You are going to give a talk about photography. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences)

Remember to say:

  • why people like taking pictures
  • why taking photos is more popular today than it was in the past
  • what the best photo you have ever taken is

You have to talk continuously.

Task 3 Listen to the model answer

(recorded by my student Oksana Pankova)

Audio: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or higher) is required to play this audio. Download the latest version. Also, JavaScript must be enabled in your browser.

Nowadays lots of people enjoy taking pictures. Some of them are professional photographers, while others consider it as a hobby. (intro 2)

actually, our life is full of bright events and unusual moments that’s why people take pictures to capture them. For example, weddings, the birth of a child, visits to different countries, starting or leaving school are much photographed /ˈfəʊtəɡrɑːf/. (2)

Taking pictures is more popular today because practically everyone has a camera built in the cell phone. To be honest digital cameras are very easy to operate. It's great that you can look through your snapshot immediately and if you don't like it, you can delete it and take another one. In the past most people could not even afford [əˈfɔːd] a camera. moreover, the process of taking pictures and printing them was very hard (difficult, time-consuming). (5)

As for me I am fond of photography and have got a professional camera. The best photo I have ever taken is the photo of the Eiffel [´aifəl] Tower which is the symbol of Paris. I did it three years ago during my summer holiday. (3)

All in all, I should say that people take pictures to remember the best moments of their lives forever. (end phrase 1)

And here are real photos of our trip to Europe in 2014.

The Eiffel Tower Paris 2014 The Louvre Oksana Pankova Disneyland Paris 2014

In the final part of the article, we will discuss the last task of the oral part of the OGE and think about how to increase the speed of reading in English.

monologue with support

This task of the oral part of the exam remained almost the same as it was last year (task 1), only a picture was screwed onto it in meaning, so that it looked more like the exam.

1.5 minutes are given for preparation, and you need to answer no more two minutes, otherwise the fragment of the task that goes beyond the time interval will not be counted.

For the task you can grab 7 points and “it is evaluated by three criteria: solving a communicative problem (here it is extremely important to talk in detail about all three aspects mentioned in the task and not to ignore the questions why?), organization of the statement (the statement should be logically built and combined into a single whole using connectives (I already gave examples of connectives in this one) , there must be an introductory and final phrase and language design (it is required to demonstrate a diverse vocabulary and various grammatical structures corresponding to the A2 (pre-intermediate) language level for the OGE ”().

AND, ATTENTION, if you get a 0 for a communication task (doesn't answer two questions out of three or jumps to another topic), the entire task is worth 0 points.

How to prepare for it

The encoder has a list topics, which a graduate of the 9th grade should be able to speak, here he is:

  1. Relationships in the family
  2. Relationships with friends and at school
  3. Appearance and characteristics of a person
  4. Leisure and hobbies (sports, music, reading, visiting the theater, cinema, discos, cafes). youth fashion
  5. Purchases. Pocket money
  6. Correspondence
  7. School life. Subjects studied and attitudes towards them. Vacation. School exchanges
  8. Problems of choosing a profession and the role of a foreign language
  9. Country/countries of the language being studied and home country. Their geographical position, climate, population, cities and villages, sights.
  10. Country/countries of the language being studied and home country. Their cultural features (national holidays, significant dates, traditions, customs)
  11. Outstanding people of their native country and countries of the studied language, their contribution to science and world culture
  12. Journey through the countries of the language being studied and across Russia
    Technical progress
  13. Global problems of our time
  14. Mass media (press, television, radio, Internet)
  15. Nature and problems of ecology. Healthy lifestyle

You need to study them according to any English textbook (I like Gateway B1+, New Opportunities: Pre-Intermediate or Solutions: Pre-Intermediate, along the way, driving into the student’s head set expressions for communicating on a particular topic. You shouldn’t be especially zealous here, no more than 10 phrases, well-practiced, is quite enough. The exam is always stressful, God forbid, three expressions from the list will be remembered.

And periodically train this task (you can use task 1 from last year's OGE, examples for it are freely available on the Internet in unlimited quantities), putting a stopwatch with 2 minutes set in front of the student's eyes. After completing the task, it is imperative to force him to reflect - did he answer all the questions posed, whether there was an introduction and conclusion in the answer, what thematic expressions and linking words he used.

Your answer, I repeat once again, should be built on scheme: introduction - the answer to three questions in order - conclusion + thematic expressions and linking words.

Example

For clarity, I want to give an example of how I would answer task 3 of the oral part of the OGE.

task 3. You are going to give a talk about photography. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.
Remember to say:
 why people like taking pictures
 why taking photos is more popular today than it was in the past
 what the best photo you have ever taken is
You have to talk continuously.

Answer:

Now I'm going to give a talk about photography.

  1. In my opinion, taking pictures is really popular now. Many of my friends and classmates have cameras on their mobiles which they use to take photos of everything they like.
  1. Today taking photos is more popular than it was in the past because cameras are less expensive and many people can afford them. You can even take pictures using camera on your mobile phone! Also, there are a lot of social networks, example Facebook or Vkontakte where people post photos and share them with friends.
  2. Personally I have one really great photo. It was taken last year in Rome. You can see my mother and me in it. We are standing near a beautiful fountain in the center of the city. The sun is shining and we are smiling.

In the end I would like to say that taking photos helps us save one of the most precious things in life – our memories, which can always be with us when we look at this or that picture.

That's all what I wanted to say.

And now let's analyze the answer.

Communication task: all three questions were answered.

Organization of the utterance: linking words are present, there are introductory and final phrases (highlighted in italics).

Language design: vocabulary - thematic words and expressions are used - take pictures, photos, photography, post photos.

Grammar - three tenses are used - Present Simple, Present Continuous (when describing a photo) and Past Simple, comparative degree (less expensive), superlative degree (the most precious), passive voice (was taken), modal verb can.

A variety of grammatical structures add to the attractiveness of the answer, and after the task itself has been practiced, it is necessary to force the student to diversify the design of his answer.

Reading aloud

At the end of the article I will share the secrets of preparing for first task the oral part of the OGE, namely, how to have time to read a piece of text in the cherished 120 seconds.

Suppose you have mastered the rules of reading, but still do not fit in 2 minutes. What to do? Obviously, reprimand texts. I select them myself (the text should be scientific and journalistic), here is an example:

Computers have been around for over sixty years and they have changed our lives. It is a well-known fact that the first modern computer began operating in the USA in 1945. This huge machine was the size of a large room. It was also very slow and so complicated to use that only an expert could operate it. That's very different from modern PCs which are so user-friendly that anyone can use them.

During the 1970s, tiny electronic microchips became more common. By the 1980s and 90s, home computers were becoming smaller, faster and cheaper. As a result, more people bought them, so computers became more wide-spread.

(Taken from Activate B1)

And we practice reading aloud like this:

  1. The student reads to himself, thinking about unfamiliar words and where to pause (I give 1.5 minutes, as in the OGE).
  2. He reads aloud, I correct the correctness, then together we analyze the division of the fragment into semantic pauses. I draw the student's attention to how much he read the text for the first time.
  3. Then follows the penultimate reading, beautiful and correct, where I do not pay attention to speed.
  4. And for the last time, the student must both read correctly and meet within 2 minutes. If this does not work out, I try to arouse a sense of shame and a desire to do better next time.

By the way, reading aloud and speaking are closely related. The faster the pace of speech, the better you read aloud. Therefore, it is extremely useful to retell everything that the soul lies in - the biography of your favorite singer, the content of an interesting book or series.

The entire oral part, as in the exam, will be recorded on a computer, so you need to train everything and bring the use of expressions to automatism. The student is already nervous, and if he gets sick before the exam or quarrels with his girlfriend, it’s a nightmare.

If you have any secrets of your own preparing for the oral part of the OGE, share it, I will be very grateful!

Good luck to all students!

Update: On the FIPI website, methodological recommendations for members of the exam committee have finally appeared, they can be found at the link.

P.S. The article also has parts.
P.P.S. You can read more about the OGE at the following links.
About sections and strategies for their implementation:

As well as.

Very soon, the 9th grade is waiting for the first exam in their life - the OGE - the main state exam. This year, the honor of being the first was given to foreign languages. On May 26, ninth-graders will pass the written part, which will include tasks in listening, word formation and writing, and on May 27 they will have an oral part: reading aloud, answering questions from an electronic assistant and, finally, an oral monologue statement, which this article is devoted to.

Topics for preparing for the oral part of the OGE in English can be downloaded, - ed.)

How to score the maximum number of points for a monologue?

JUDGING CRITERIA

In order to competently compose an oral monologue statement, you need to know and understand the criteria by which it is evaluated well. There are only three criteria: the solution of a communicative task (K5), the organization of the utterance (K6), the language design of the utterance (K7). What is behind each of these points, read below.

It must be remembered that only 1.5 minutes are given for preparation, and 2 minutes for the answer, which means that there will be little time to think, and therefore certain response strategies should be developed, the so-called “blanks” should be developed.

(The official document with the evaluation criteria is called "Codifier of content elements and requirements for the level of training of students for the main state exam in English", it is posted in the public domain, - ed.)

K5 - SOLUTION OF THE COMMUNICATION PROBLEM

So, the solution of the communicative task involves a complete, accurate and detailed coverage of the three aspects of the main topic indicated in the task. In addition, you need to comply with the required volume - 11-12 sentences.

In order to get the maximum number of points for the criterion (3 in total), you need to say three, and even four sentences for each aspect. Simple arithmetic is used: 3 sentences for 3 aspects (three times three equals 9) plus introductory and final sentences (2 in total), we get 11 in total - what the doctor ordered. But in order to protect yourself from lowering the score on this criterion due to insufficient volume, it is really better to say more somewhere.

Why do scores decrease according to the K6 criterion? For insufficient volume: 8-9 offers are worth 2 points, and for 6-7 you will get only 1.

In addition, the score is reduced if the topic is not fully disclosed: for one aspect that is not fully disclosed, you will receive 2 points, if you incompletely cover all aspects of the topic or do not disclose two of them, while the third is fully disclosed, you will receive 1 point.

If you have not disclosed two aspects of the content, while the third aspect is also not disclosed, unfortunately, you will receive 0. Zero points are also given if the volume of the statement is insufficient: less than 5 sentences.

If the graduate receives 0 points for this criterion, the entire assignment is scored 0 points.

K6 - ORGANIZATION OF THE STATEMENT

To get a maximum (2 points) for the organization of the statement, you need to remember the introductory and final phrases, correctly use the means of logical connection (that is, linking words).

The introductory phrase is already ready: we are building it based on the task. For example, the assignment says: “You are going to give a talk about films.” The opening line is the same: "I'm going to give a talk about films." Just don't rely on reading it from the screen: the first phrase will disappear as soon as the recording starts.

The final phrase is also very simple and will not change. You can say: “I’ve come to the end of my talk. Thank you for listening" or "This is the end of my talk. Thank you for listening". If you see that the seconds allotted to you for the story are rapidly disappearing, and you do not have time to say the above phrases, at least say: “That’s all for now”, and may you be happy (the score will remain).

Linking words in speech are no longer as easy to automate as introductory and final phrases, but not to say that it is difficult.

Your monologue on the exam consists of 5 parts:
1) introductory phrase;
2) 1 aspect;
3) 2 aspect;
4) 3 aspect;
5) closing phrase.

Just make it a rule to start each part with a linking word. For this they are needed. Without them, your speech will become similar to the notorious proverb: "In the garden of elderberry, in Kyiv - uncle."

For example, when covering the first aspect of the topic “Films”, which can be formulated as “what kinds of films modern teenagers enjoy”, one can insert a non-binding “actually”, or say, “in fact”, “to tell the truth” . For example: “To tell the truth, modern teenagers enjoy different kinds of films. Thrillers, comedies, adventures, science fiction films and even horrors are among teenagers’ favorite films. Besides, some of teens prefer watching action films and, unfortunately, crime films.”

Everybody knows that our appearance matters in what people think about us. Appearance is important not only in a romantic relationship but also in politics. Appearance is not all about beauty.

The moment we see a person our mind starts evaluating their personality according to their looks. What especially matters is the person's face.

This means that the impression somebody's face makes on others can cost the person his or her political career.

When we vote for a candidate we think that we are weighing his or her personal qualities. In fact, we are examining their face.

Research has shown that if a candidate's appearance displays competence, power and leadership, but not beauty or good looks, it can cause a political victory or defeat.

These findings are really important.

Her eldest brother is 26 and the parents already have two grandchildren.

The family announced the birth of the child on their family website.

They described the girl as "beautiful". The family owns a bakery and hopes the children will take over the family business.

It looks like if the era when the average British family would have only two or three children is over.

Britain's national sport is not, as most people think, football but the Lottery. It may also be

surprising to know that the people who gamble most on the Lottery are not well-off but

mostly working class people who hope that by winning the Lottery they will change their lives. Even though everyone who buys a lottery ticket knows that the chances of them becoming a millionaire are incredibly slim, it doesn’t stop British people from spending huge money on lottery tickets and trying their luck every week. You can ‘break the ice’ with strangers by talking about the weather. “Shame about the weather”, “Is it still raining?” or “Bit chilly today, don’t you think?” Another good topic for conversation is work. However, English people do not like talking about the politics except in a general way. And you should avoid asking them what political party they vote for. It is not appropriate to ask people about their age or how much they earn.

People who travel through the thick Brazilian jungle may arrive at a shocking place- a small American-style town with streets, houses, a police station and even a golf course. The difference is that here in the middle of the rainforest there are no people. Only monkeys jumping on the rooftops. The town was built in the "20s and its inhabitants abandoned it in the 1940s. The famous car maker Henry Ford bought this land and wanted to build a factory there to produce rubber for his cars. The workers were moved there from Michigan. Chocolate comes from cacao trees. These trees are from South and Central America but today they grow in other parts of the world too. Cacao trees can only grow in countries with a tropical climate. Cacao trees are about 6 meters tall and have big green leaves. Chocolate is made from cacao beans. The beans are the fruit of the tree. In West Africa all the families help to cut the cacao pods from the trees. Then the beans must ferment for 5 to 8 days. After fermentation the beans must dry in the sun. Then ships take the cacao beans in sacks to countries that make chocolate, such as the USA and England.

The botanic name of the cacao tree is Theobroma cacao. It means “food of the gods”. Some scientists believe that chocolate may help people live longer. But everyone agrees that chocolate makes people happy!

Trees live, grow, and reproduce themselves by an amazing process.

Temperatures are rising around the world, particularly in the Arctic. In the past 30 years

650,000 square kilometers of ice have disappeared. Rising sea levels mean many

countries are going to lose part of their coastline. Unless we take action, some countries will

disappear completely. Scientists think that if temperatures continue to increase, we will see

hotter summers, milder winters and more tropical storms, which might become more

dangerous. They also say that if global temperatures rise by just two degrees, 30% of all land living creatures may become extinct. The ten hottest years ever recorded have all been since 1990. Scientists say that unless we reduce the amount of pollution we are creating,

temperatures could be five degrees higher by the end of the century.

Test 1 FAMILY LIFE

A British family has recently celebrated the birth of their 18th child. It was a girl and her brothers and sisters have welcomed their new sister. Her eldest brother is 26 and the parents already have two grandchildren. The family announced the birth of the child on their family website. They described the girl as "beautiful". The family owns a bakery and hopes the children will take over the family business. It looks like if the era when the average British family would have only two or three children is over. In Britain there are more families with four children than anywhere else in Europe. Social scientists say that this is the result of immigration into the country of families from Asia and Africa.

Everybody knows that our appearance matters in what people think about us. Appearance is important not only in a romantic relationship but also in politics. Appearance is not all about beauty. The moment we see a person our mind starts evaluating their personality according to their looks. What especially matters is the persons face. This means that the impression somebody’s face makes on others can cost the person his or her political career. When we vote for a candidate we think that we are weighing his or her personal qualities. In fact, we are examining their face. Research has shown that if a candidate's appearance displays competence, power and leadership, but not beauty or good looks, it can cause a political victory or defeat.
