Washington monument This monument was built in honour of George Washington. It is 555 feet tall and provides a panoramic view of Washington D.C.

The Lincoln Memorial It was built in honour of A. Lincoln. Inside the Memorial there is a huge statue of the former president.

The Capitol is surrounded by a beautiful garden with many trees and flowers. It is the tallest building in Washington D.C.

The White House is an important part of Washington D.C. It is where the President lives and works. The White House has 132 rooms. Visitors may tour some of the first-floor rooms; second floor is the home for the President and his family.

The Jefferson Memorial It was built in honour of Thomas Jefferson. Inside is a 19-foot statue of T.Jefferson standing on 6-foot pedestal.

The NASA Museum This is the National Air and Space Museum. Here you can see the history of flight from the first plane flown by the Wright brothers to the Shuttle spaceship.

Управление городом

Капитолий (United States Capitol) - местопребывание Конгресса США на Капитолийском холме в Вашингтоне, идейно-градостроительный центр округа Колумбия. Соединяется с Монументом Вашингтона и Монументом Линкольна 1800-метровой Национальной аллеей. К востоку от парламентского центра раскинулись Библиотека Конгресса и резиденция Верховного суда США (до 1935 г. заседания Верховного суда проходили в самом Капитолии).

Расположено между Индепенденс-авеню, улицы Ист Кэпитол (East Capitol Street) на улицы Фёст СИ (1st Street SE). George Washington is the first President of the USA.

He was born in 1732 in Virgin state in poor family.

In 1789 George Washington was elected as a President of the United States of America. And in 1792 he was elected secondarily. He formed the system of governance (правление).

George Washington died in 1799 when he was 67 years old in his estate (имение) .

HISTORY OF WASHINGTON D.C.

In 16 th of July, 1790 Congress of the USA approved the place for future capital. It was a place between two states: Virgin and Maryland, on the Potomac river.

The project of the city was created by French engineer Pierre-Charles Lanfan.

In 1814 Washington D.C. was annexed by British army and burned. It was restored later.

In 1862 slavery was abolished in Washington. And thousands of African Americans came to the city.

From 1801 till our days Washington D.C. is ruled by Congress of the USA, Mayor and Legislative Council.

Washington climate is subtropical.

  • Winter is not cold usually (from -3°C to +6°C). However there are frozen sometimes (-12°C) and snows in January-February.
  • Spring is sunny and dry as a rule. It comes in the end of March.
  • Summer is hot and wet. Average degree is around +32°C. Usually hot weather comes in May and runs till September.
  • Autumn is the most beautiful time in Washington. It is warm and rains are not often.

The seat of the USA Congress and the branch of the US Federal government. Capitol is the highest building in Washington and it is forbidden to build anything higher.

The monument was built to commemorate George Washington. It is located between White House and the Capitol

The official residence and a workplace of the president of the USA. The house was built between 1792 and 1800.


TRANSPORT

There are different kinds of transport in Washington D.C:

  • Metro

It was opened in 1976 and currently there are 91 stations. Every day 500 000 people use metro.

2. Busses

There are also huge buss park in the city

In Washington you can rent a bicycle any time using a system Smart Bike DC. People in Washington use bicycles very often.

Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It’s situated in the District of Columbia and is like no other city in the USA. Washington was named after the first US President George Washington. Washington was first settled in 1790 and since 1800 it has been the federal capital.

The White House

The beautiful home of every president of the USA, except the first president. This is the oldest public building in Washington, D.C, and has the most famous address in the USA – 1660 Pennsylvania Avenue. Cosists of 132 rooms. Open for tours10:00 a.m. to noon.

The Capitol

The tallest building in Washington, D.S., and the most famous building in the US, because this is where laws are made. The Capitol is surrounded by a beautiful garden with many trees and flowers. It is situated on Capitol Hill. The Capitol was built according to plans of William Thorton.

The Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is the largest nathional library in the States. It contains more than 13 million books, more than 19 manuscripsts, including the personal papers of the US presidents. It takes 340 miles of shelves to hold all the books.

Washington monument

This monument was built in honor of George Washington. It is 555 feet tall and provides a panoramic view of Washington, D.C., via elevator. It is called "The Pencil”, because it is one of the tallest stone construction in the world and in the USA. Located south of the White House.

Jefferson Memorial

This is the Jefferson Memorial built in honour of Thomas Jefferson. Inside is a 19 – foot statue of Thomas Jefferson standing on a 6 – foot pedestal. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson. He was the first President of the United States

Lincoln memorial

This is the Lincoln memorial, built in honour of Abraham Lincoln. It was built in the style of classic Greek temple. It has 36 columns. Each column represents the state in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. But the dominant feature of the building is the realistic figure of Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States in 1861.

The National gallery was opened in 1941. It has a lot of art collections by the great masters from 14th to the 19th centuries. It is one of the finest picture galleries in America

Deemed as one of the most stately buildings in the world, it is constructed of Massachusetts marble and Virginia sandstone, with a cast iron dome to complete the building.

Completed in 1865 by Constantino Brumidi, the Frescoe covers the 4, 664 square feet inside the dome of the Capitol Building.



The president meets members from the Office of Homeland Security and other White House staff in the Oval Office.

The State Dining Room is currently used for formal dining.


Modeled on the Greek Parthenon, the Lincoln Memorial was designed by Henry Bacon and completed in 1922.

Its 36 columns represent the number of states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s assassination in 1865.


In the center hall of the structure sits a 19-foot tall statue of Abraham Lincoln.

The memorial is located at the west end of the Mall on the banks of the Potomac River and is the site of many historical events, such as the Dr. Martin Luther King “I have a dream” speech.
