Maps were made long before reading and writing were invented. The earliest map that we know of is a cave painting in the Lascaux caves in France. The painting shows a part of the summer night's sky 16,500 years ago. Modern astronomers can still understand the night sky shown in the map. A four thousand year old map made by the Babylonians is still in existence. Many ancient map-makers thought that the world was flat, but explorers like Magellan in the 15th century sailed around the world and helped to make better maps. Besides, measurements taken by satellites show that our planet is slightly pear shaped. Satellites have also provided more accurate information and have helped to see and map parts of the world that were little known or never seen by humans before. Satellites have photographed the Amazon rainforest and have shown that the area the size of twenty football pitches is being cut down every minute. Pictures taken from space have also shown that one of the world's largest areas of inland water, the Aral Sea, has been shrinking very quickly. Modern satellite maps show the effects of global warming and pollution and help us to understand the world around us better. More and more drivers nowadays rely on satellite navigation in their cars so the traditional road maps may not be around much longer.

21. Writing was invented a long time after the first map was drawn.

23. The first map was made by the Babylonians.

25. Magellan's explorations helped the map-makers to improve their maps.

A) True B) False C) Not known

26. Our planet is a perfect sphere.

A) True B) False C) Not known

27. Modern maps are more detailed and accurate.

A) True B) False C) Not known

28. The Amazon rainforest is gradually disappearing.

A) True B) False C) Not known

29. The level of the Aral Sea has been increasing.

A) True B) False C) Not known

30. Soon the traditional printed road maps may be out of use.

Acquaintance with the culture of the country of the language being studied is one of the priority tasks of teaching foreign languages. The specificity of the subject implies the mastery of communicative competence by students. All this is impossible without the involvement of a cultural component. Studying the culture of another country, along with the means of the language, not only allows you to effectively involve students in the "dialogue of cultures", acquaint them with universal values, replenish "background knowledge", but also provide great opportunities for providing students with cognitive motivation.

Lessons in the form of a game, competitions, quizzes, competitions are always attractive, they help to activate previously learned material, consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired by students. The desire to measure oneself, to test knowledge in competition with friends, the opportunity to learn something new gives such lessons a motivated character.

Register to participate in BEO itself http://oxfordcrown.ru/british_engli...

What if the school did not enroll 10 people?

A school that has not recruited 10 people for a trip to the VEO does not participate in the grant competition. But he can add his students to the general team, which will be called "Leaders".

What is VEO?

BEO is the grand competition of the year, attended by 2,000 people from 18 countries in 2017.

Within 2 weeks, teams of carefully selected children aged 12-16 with a high level of English enter the fight for prizes in the following categories:

  • International debate on a given topic
  • Project on a given topic or presentation of your country
  • Competition in the field of theatrical art, vocal, dance, sports

The brilliant awards ceremony with the participation of VIP guests led by the ambassadors of the participating countries takes place in the most famous places in London. So in 2017 it was the Royal Theater in Covent Garden (West End).

Impressions for a lifetime will remain with both schoolchildren and their accompanying teachers.

What do students get:

  • Communication with peers from around the world (2000 people)
  • Discussion of global political and social topics
  • Making the most of all your academic knowledge and skills
  • Public speaking and speaking to large audiences
  • Development of leadership skills and teamwork skills
  • Full immersion in the life of the British school, culture and history
