About the book "Total Threat" by James Dashner

In 2012, James Dashner presented the first prequel book to the Maze Runner series. The book was originally called Murder Warrant, but the title was later changed to Total Menace. As the author himself stated, it reveals the origins of the formation of VICE and why the Flash appeared.

The events of the book take readers 13 years ago (relative to the time of the story in). Humanity is being destroyed on both sides at once. The first side is a powerful emission of solar radiation, which rushes to the Earth in continuous streams, literally sweeping away all life in its path. People just burn out. This outbreak resulted in drastic and irreversible climate changes—sharp warming. Huge territories are turning into dead deserts, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to survive. Having left their comfortable, cozy homes, people, as in ancient times, huddle in mountain caves, set up homes in the forests, and wait out the unbearable heat in tents.

But there is also a second side. America's rapidly expanding population must be reduced. This is what the government decided. And darts poisoned by a deadly virus rained down on people from the plane. The only trouble is that the virus was not fully studied, and therefore there was no vaccine for it. The “purge” has turned into an epidemic that cannot be stopped. In this difficult situation, the main characters Mark, Trina, Alec, Lana and Didi must find a cure for this infection before humanity is completely destroyed.

James Dashner's novel Total Menace will be of interest to all fans of the Labyrinth saga. Through the eyes of the boy Mark, they will be able to take a new look at what caused irreversible changes on the planet. The book will make you think about a lot: in particular, about the limits of elected power over people’s lives, about responsibility for actions and the ability to calculate the situation two steps ahead. “Total Threat” will tell about perseverance and determination, about mutual assistance even in the most difficult situations.

The novel is easy to read, it has enough dramatic and adventure scenes. The adventures of the heroes will make you really worry about the success of their difficult mission. James Dashner's book "Total Menace" can be read before starting to get acquainted with the "Maze Runner" series, or after - it is also good as an additional supplement to your favorite saga.

Quotes from the book Total Threat by James Dashner

Remember, a hasty fighter is a dead fighter.

What are you thinking about? he asks.
Their eyes meet and a smile appears on Trina's face.
- Nothing. I won't think about anything for two whole weeks. Nothing. And if I start thinking, then I’ll think carefully about not thinking about anything, and I’ll stop thinking.

James Dashner's book "Total Menace" is a dystopian science fiction novel that tells what happened 13 years before the events described in the "Maze Runner" series. The book explains a lot and puts everything in its place.

The Earth is heavily influenced by solar radiation, and humanity is on the verge of extinction. There has been a sharp warming, the human body simply cannot withstand such temperatures, people are dying. Green areas became deserts. The surviving people are hiding in the mountains and forests, living in huts, since it becomes impossible to survive in cities. They live as in ancient times, trying to get food for themselves and somehow preserve life.

The government decides to reduce the population, deciding to expose them to an incompletely understood virus. People found themselves under fire from poisoned darts. The virus led to an epidemic. It is not possible to stop it, because the virus has not been fully studied, and no one knows what can neutralize it. To save people, Trina, Mark, Lana, Alec, Didi must find a vaccine. These young people must go through many dangers, support and help each other in order to achieve their goal. But have they just achieved it?

The novel is eventful and does not allow you to rest for a minute. It makes you think about the value of friendship, mutual assistance, and self-sacrifice, especially in moments of serious threat. There is also a subtext in the book that we are not always governed by competent and honest government officials. People are used to trusting, thinking that the government is doing everything for the good of humanity. But when danger arises, one cannot be sure that salvation will be aimed at all people, and perhaps only at a select few. The book will be of interest to all fans of the Maze Runner series as a supplement to the main story.

I miss you so much.

Teresa looked at her best friend and tried to imagine what it would be like to forget him.

However, she has seen dozens of times how Sterk influences people. Thomas' brown hair, thoughtful expression on his face, piercing gaze - will all this really become alien, unfamiliar? Is it possible that he and Thomas will no longer exchange humorous remarks about strange smells, laugh at the sight of an awkward lump, or communicate telepathically...

No, it can not be!

However, this was only a day away.

For her. And for Thomas it will happen in a few minutes. He was lying on the operating table: his eyes were closed, his chest was heaving rhythmically, his breathing was even. Thomas, in the standard Glade attire of shorts and a T-shirt, looked like an ordinary boy taking a nap after an ordinary day at an ordinary school, long before solar flares and disease deprived the world of normality, bringing death and destruction, in those days when children - and their memories - were not kidnapped and sent to the terrible Labyrinth, when the human brain had not yet become a kill zone and did not require constant attention and study for the benefit of science and medicine.

The doctor and nurse, preparing Thomas for surgery, lowered the mask over his face. The devices clicked, hissed and beeped, tubular metal and plastic wires slid across the skin and dug into the ear canals. Thomas's fingers twitched reflexively. Despite the painkillers, he still felt pain, although he did not remember it. The device started working, snatching images from Thomas’s memory, erasing memories of his parents, his former life... About Teresa.

Part of her mind insisted that she should be angry, scream out loud, scream at the top of her lungs, refuse to cooperate, but this timid desire was easily overcome by a strong confidence that would forever remain with Teresa, even after tomorrow's procedure. She and Thomas proved their conviction by willingly doing what they had to subject others to. It doesn't matter whether they survive or die. VICE will find a cure for the virus, millions of inhabitants of the planet will be saved, and life will someday return to normal - Teresa had not the slightest doubt about this, as well as the fact that all people grow old and die, and in the fall the leaves fall from the trees .

Thomas took a shaky breath, groaned softly, and moved slightly. For a moment it seemed that he was about to wake up, trembling with horror - in his head some devices were doing God knows what. However, Thomas calmed down, even breathing resumed, the devices continued to click and hiss, erasing the memories of Teresa’s best friend.

Thomas said goodbye to her, and his last words - “See you tomorrow” - could not leave her mind. What he agreed to seemed unreal, unnatural. Yes, they will see each other again tomorrow, but Teresa will be in a coma, and Thomas will not even guess who she is, unless somewhere in the depths of his memory a vague shadow of recognition stirs. Tomorrow... The fear, the exhausting preparation, the development of action plans - all this is over. Thomas and Teresa will have to experience for themselves what was done to Alby, Newt, Minho and the rest. There is no turning back.

Teresa felt a strange peace. The horror of the grievers and schizans disappeared and was replaced by an all-encompassing calm. VICE had no way out. Thomas and Teresa had no choice. How can you refuse to sacrifice yourself to save humanity? There is no time for regrets or repentance. Teresa accepted the inevitability: what will be will be.

She and Thomas participated in the creation of the Labyrinth, and Teresa made a lot of effort to curb her feelings, to isolate herself from them with a strong wall.

Discordant, fragmentary thoughts faded, as if freezing and dissolving. The procedure was coming to an end. The doctor pressed some buttons on the remote control, the machines clicked and hissed faster. Thomas's body shook. Tubes and wires began to snake, being drawn into the mask. There was an oppressive silence. The nurse leaned over Thomas and removed the mask from his face. Clear marks were imprinted on the reddened skin. He didn't open his eyes.

Teresa could hardly contain her disappointment and fear. When Thomas wakes up, he won't remember her. They will meet in the Glade and will not recognize each other. Teresa fought with her last strength against the pressure of oppressive feelings that threatened to break through the barrier and overwhelm her.

There was no turning back.

Two guards lifted the unconscious Thomas from the operating table, grabbed him by the arms and legs like a straw man, put him on a gurney and, not paying attention to Teresa, headed towards the door. Everyone knew where he was being taken. The doctor and nurse had finished their work and were busily putting the instruments in their places. Teresa nodded goodbye to them and followed the guards out.

The gurney was driven through the endless corridors of VICE headquarters. Teresa looked at Thomas's pale, sweaty face, and her heart bled. It seemed that somewhere in the depths of his consciousness he was trying to overcome the effect of the drugs, guessing about the horrors awaiting him. Teresa became scared: she would have to go through this herself. Why did she isolate herself from her feelings? Once her memories are taken away, the wall she built will crumble to dust.

They finally reached the basement level beneath the Labyrinth and passed through a storage room where supplies for the Gladers were piled on shelves. In the cool darkness of the basement, Teresa shivered and rubbed her goosebump-covered arms. The gurney bounced on the uneven cement floor, Thomas shuddered in his sleep, a grimace of despair running across his face.

At the bottom of the elevator well rested a huge metal cube.

The Glade was located only two floors above, but the Gladers were told that the path here was very difficult. This evoked all sorts of feelings in the brain, patterns of all sorts of emotions and reactions - from confusion and confusion to outright horror - which enabled doctors to begin to determine the site of the lesion. Teresa had to go the same way tomorrow. She will come to her senses, clutching the scribbled piece of paper in her hand. However, she will spend a terrible half hour in the dark in a coma, and Thomas will wake up in the Box all alone.

The guards set up a gurney next to the Box, dragged a tall metal ladder up to it with a grinding sound, and awkwardly climbed the steps, picking Thomas up under the arms. Teresa did not volunteer to help, she stubbornly watched from the sidelines, still trying to overcome a surge of despair.

Groaning and swearing, the guards dragged Thomas to the top of the Box. Teresa looked at the calm face with closed eyes and mentally addressed her friend, although she knew that he would not hear: We're doing the right thing, Thomas. See you on the other side!

The guards forcefully lowered Thomas into the Box, and the unconscious body hit the metal floor with a loud sound.

Teresa turned and walked away. Behind him there was the sound of metal grinding against metal and the sound of a door closing. Thomas was left alone with his fate.

Thirteen years ago

Mark woke up shivering from the cold - a strange, forgotten sensation.

The pale light of dawn filtered through the cracks in the log cabin walls. Mark found a blanket of moose skin - two months ago he had killed a giant moose single-handedly and was very proud of it. In a world of eternal heat, the blanket served for beauty, not for warmth. However, recently the heat began to subside, the morning chill made its way into the same cracks as the light. Mark pulled the blanket up to his chin and rolled over onto his back, yawning loudly.

On the opposite wall of the hut - just two steps away - Alec was sleeping peacefully, snoring loudly. The former soldier had a sullen personality and rarely smiled, except when his stomach was growling loudly. But Alec had a heart of gold. The rough nature of the old warrior did not frighten or repel anyone, because they had already spent a whole year side by side, together with Lana, Trina and the others. Mark grabbed a shoe and threw it at the sleeping man.

The soldier's training did not fail, and Alec jumped out of bed with a thunderous roar.

- What the hell! – he growled, but Mark deftly threw the second shoe at him. - Oh, you rat liver! – Alec muttered good-naturedly, looking at Mark with narrowed eyes, in which a funny sparkle was hidden. - What if I accidentally hit you? Why are you bothering me, tell me?
