When you see Venus/Mercury rising before the Sun, they are moving in retrograde(s). Mercury begins its retrograde phase when it overtakes the Sun by about 14 degrees and Venus by about 30 degrees. Mercury is retrograde for 3 weeks 3 times a year, and Venus for 19 months. Other planets only go retrograde when they are in opposition to the Sun.
