After some thought, I decided to divide this list of Harry Potter fanfictions into pairings (the main characters and the romantic relationship between them). Because many readers are looking for fanfiction by their favorite pairings. Of course, this only applies to the get category. So let's go.
Pairing Harry Potter/Hermione Granger
One of the most popular couples in Harry Potter fanfiction. In the canon, their relationship did not work out, so the authors and readers recoup in the fandom.

Due to this, events develop differently than in the canon. However, for obvious reasons, deviations from the canon occur gradually. Given this change in the character of the protagonist, the formation of the Harry Potter/Hermione Granger pairing is natural.

Here, as a result of an injury, the skills and knowledge of Tom Riddle wake up in Harry Potter. But personal memory is not. Therefore, he is aware of himself as Potter, but he evaluates the environment as a distrustful adult and intelligent person.
Here the hero plays for the aristocracy, tribal magic is spelled out and so on. I'm not sure that the fashion for this went from "We, the aristocrats", but it is best written here.

She has been there for as long as I can remember. There were a lot of interesting things around this willow, all my childhood, youth, and soon old age passed near it.
I remember once, while walking under the night sky, I stumbled upon one person. It was a man, 12 years older than me, tall, with a broad back and a lonely look. He sat on the roots of that same willow and thoughtfully looked into the distance, as if he was waiting for someone.
The sky became darker, the clouds thickened, and this man still sat and watched the water, as it was carried by the wind, to the ebb and flow of the waves, as the birds merrily bathe in the rays of the fading sun. And I saw him more than once. In my opinion, if I remember correctly, he came every other day, apparently he worked, so he could not come every day. But once I was overcome by curiosity: who is this unknown person waiting for? Why does he come here every day, and even alone? One clear night, when there was not a single cloud in the sky, I decided to go up to him and ask:
Hello, can I ask you one indiscreet question?
He, not paying any attention to me, continued to look into the distance. The silence did not last long, but he said to me:

Higo and I got married, and after a while we had a child, whom we named Chiyodo. Although we lived in poverty, we were the happiest couple in all of Japan. Day after day passed, we all lived a happy life, but, as you know, the world does not stand still. Our village was developing, and wood was needed to build one bridge. The builders told us that they wanted to cut down our willow, which we categorically refused.
Why did you suddenly need our willow? - I asked in a serious tone, - Do you have enough other trees from the neighboring forest?
No you! So be it, we'll think about it.
Even though they said so, I still didn’t know what they were really up to… I only knew that the emperor decided to build a temple dedicated to the goddess Kannon in Kyoto, so he sent messengers everywhere in search of wood. A Brief History of Fanfiction
It is generally accepted that fanfiction is a new phenomenon, generated by the wild fantasy of modern fans. But in reality, things are not quite like that. At any time, it was worth the appearance of an interesting work, readers began to ask the question “what if?” and began to scribble their options for continuation. Of course, not everyone did this, but only those who had the necessary skills (for example, knew how to write).
The beginnings of fan fiction appeared not just in the pre-Internet era, but neither more nor less among the ancient Greeks. The heroes of Homer especially "got it", in which the ancient Greek playwrights constantly breathed a second life. For example, the hero of the Iliad, Achilles, appeared in the dramas of Sophocles, the tragedies of Aeschylus, Euripides, Aristarchus of Tegey, Jophon, Astidamant the Younger, Diogenes, Karkin the Younger, Cleophon, Evareth and Livy Andronicus. The list is impressive - but it's all about only one character!
If someone naively believes that copyright infringement and plagiarism are the scourge of modern literature alone, he should reconsider his views. Theft flourished at all times. There were very unpleasant situations, such as, for example, with the continuation of Don Quixote. While Cervantes quietly wrote the second part of the novel, in 1614 a fake sequel, The False Quixote, was published, which was supposedly written by the monk Luis de Aliaga, the confessor of King Philip III.
There were, of course, many fanfictions that did not pretend to be a continuation of the original. For example, when Arthur Conan Doyle refused to continue the Sherlock Holmes series, fans began to create new stories. In order not to incur the wrath of the author, it was only necessary to give up all rights to the characters. Since then, one of the main rules for publishing fanfiction has been the renunciation of the claim to own the rights to the characters and the world.
It is important to separate the amateur creation of fans from the official sequels and novelizations that are created by professional writers on behalf of publishers. So, for example, Scarlett and Rhett Butler appeared - sequels to the novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. And although Timothy Zahn is undoubtedly a Star Wars fan, and Robert Salvatore is a Forgotten Realms fan, their books are in no way related to fan fiction.
The real mania for fanfiction came in the sixties, after the release of the Star Trek series. Ever since the series was being filmed, fans have been flooding the studio with letters, edits, demands for changes to the plot. When Star Trek was canceled, fanfiction was the only way to stay close to your favorite characters for many years. “Our goal is to boldly go where no fan has gone before,” the trekks said and began to bring their ideas to life.
The world of Star Trek provides fans of science fiction with a huge scope for creativity. Each civilization has its own culture and history, each hero has an exceptional character and biography, there are even starship specifications and recipes for traditional Klingon dishes. Once you touch the keyboard, it's hard to stop. More than three hundred novels, many stories, poems and, of course, fanfiction have been written based on Star Trek. The Star Trek ficotheques are bursting with an incredible number of works for every taste - from canonical to crossovers, from completely childish and naive to bold and unexpected.
Harry Potter: King of Fanfiction
No one has roamed the fanfiction field like Harry Potter fans. What you will not find in the works of Potter fans: here is the evil Harry Potter, getting the unfortunate Malfoy, and Hermione, trying to seduce the Potions professor. There are alternate stories about "how things really were", and sequels that ignore the events of the seventh book, and stories about the children of the main characters. In fan fiction, you can meet miraculously revived Fred Weasley, Severus Snape and the intriguing Dumbledore.
Heroes are also popular, whose stories Rowling did not pay too much attention to. At one time, the fanfic "The Color of Hope", written by Natalia Sposobina (Ledi Fiona), was very popular, where the characters of Narcissa Malfoy, Sirius Black and other secondary characters were revealed. There are also works that reveal to us the story "from the back" side, on behalf of the villains. Especially popular is Draco Malfoy, who appears not as a bastard, as in books, but as a noble and sad anti-hero, forced to make a deal with his conscience for the sake of his family.

Among all this tinsel, one particularly successful fanfic should be noted, which has turned into an independent phenomenon. This is Eliezer Yudkowsky's "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" fantasy. This text is also apocryphal, but it differs from the stories about "Draco in leather pants" in the same way that Yudkovsky himself differs from lonely high school girls. The author of this fanfic is an artificial intelligence specialist who deals with the problems of the technological singularity.
In this alternate reality, Petunia, Harry's aunt, married not Vernon Dursley, but a well-read and wise university professor who raised his adopted son as his own. So the character of the protagonist has changed beyond recognition. This is not the same Potter that lived in the closet under the stairs. Young Harry was surrounded by science fiction and science fiction, good teachers, often talked with his stepfather, and by the age of eleven he understood quantum mechanics and probability theory.

No wonder the sorting hat sent him to Ravenclaw, where Hermione ended up. And Ron's place in Potter's life was taken by Draco Malfoy. True, their friendship is unusual - not in the sense in which the vulgar people thought. Young people are constantly competing, challenging each other. Watching Harry and Draco fight on the intellectual front is very interesting.
And in general, watching how a smart and prudent hero comprehends the world of magic is a real pleasure. Little Harry talks about the fundamental attribution error, calculates the rate of the magical currency and looks at the wonders around him, constantly considering how they can be used. This fanfic is a real guide to social psychology, logical thinking and rationalism.
Fanfiction in Russia
Fanfiction came to the USSR and Russia in the late 1980s, when translated fiction began to be published en masse. Rare examples have been seen before. For example, the creator of "Hottabych" Lazar Lagin wrote the story "Major Well Endue" as an alternative view of Wells' "War of the Worlds" - through the eyes of not a brave journalist, but a coward and a traitor. And the cycle about Volkov's Emerald City can be called a kind of fan fiction based on Baum's "Land of Oz".
But all these were the games of great writers. And after perestroika, fanfiction poured in like a river and even got into print. Copyright in Russia operated under Soviet laws for a long time, therefore, for example, Tolkien fan fiction was not just published, but was published in thick volumes and in large print runs.
Interestingly, most authors wrote apocryphal works based on Tolkien, arguing with the original source, stating: “The professor is wrong!” This is the "Black Book of Arda" by Vasilyeva and Nekrasova, and "The Last Ring-bearer" by Kirill Yeskov, and "The Man from the Iron Island" by Alexei Sviridov, and even to some extent "Beyond the Dawn" by Olga Chigirinskaya, who tried to reconcile Tolkien's versions and CHKA. So the one who wrote the "usual" sequel was sort of an exception. In The Ring of Darkness, he also argued with Tolkien in some ways, but at least he didn’t announce that “it wasn’t like that!”.
Perumov is Russia's most famous example of how an author who started out as a fanfiction can become a professional writer creating his own worlds. However, there were also such authors who not only started with works on alien universes, but also continued to publish them for many years. For example, Sergei Sukhinov published more than two dozen (!) books that loosely continue The Wizard of the Emerald City (yes, there are fanfictions based on fanfiction!), and a dozen and a half sequels to Edmond Hamilton's space opera Starry Wolf.
In the 2010s, copyright became stricter, and now free sequels and apocrypha could no longer appear in print with such ease. By that time, they had already been replaced by domestic multi-author projects like "The Time of Students" by the Strugatskys and "Nika Perumov's Worlds". But all this is the work of professional writers. And “pure” fanfiction went to the Internet, to sites like Samizdat and Fikbuk.
Writers versus fiwriters
Copyright is a sore point for fanfiction authors. In theory, any fanfiction, except perhaps parody, violates copyright. In practice, it all depends on how the authors of the original perceive fan art. Some treat him condescendingly. J.K. Rowling even posted recommendations for fanfiction authors on her website. Among Russian writers, this attitude is especially common. Sergey Lukyanenko spoke out in defense of fanfiction, and Nick Perumov, who himself started, in fact, as a ficwriter, even organized his own literary project with the authors of fanfiction based on his books.
There are also authors who do not approve of fanfiction, such as George Martin and the creators of the Babylon 5 series. Martin's position is pretty well substantiated: to argue it, he told several stories on his blog about how fanfiction harmed writers.
One such story is about Marion Zimmer Bradley, a writer who allowed fanfiction for her Darkover series. She sometimes even communicated with the authors, leaving reviews and comments. And everything was fine until one day she came across a fanfic based on an idea similar to the one that the author was going to use in her new novel. The writer contacted the fanfictioner, asking them to remove the work from the Web, even offering some payment and a mention in the novel. But she received not just a refusal, but a wish to recognize the fanfiction as a co-author of the book or to share the fee. Marion chose to bury the novel, and with it her love of fan art.
Fanfiction in a mask
Fanfiction always raises the question of where the line is between art and theft. The main argument in favor of fan fiction has always been that fan work is non-commercial. For a freewriter, the most valuable reward is the recognition of readers. Few people want to hurt their favorite author. From a moral and ethical point of view, it would probably be right to leave fanfiction in the circle of the fans themselves. But there is no consensus on this matter. And for those who want to cash in on other people's creations, the law is full of loopholes.
Of course, more often than not, a freelance writer cannot sell their work. A rare exception is fanfiction based on very old books, the authors of which have died long ago. Otherwise, the names, titles, and details of the universe are protected by copyright. However, the texts themselves belong to their authors! Therefore, it is not uncommon for fanfiction to be remade into original works by a slight change in entourage.
The most famous (and infamous) example of this is the erotic novel by E. L. James "50 Shades of Grey." It was originally written as a Twilight fan fiction by Stephenie Meyer, and then reworked into an independent, realistic (with a stretch, of course) work, which was even made into a film.
The transformation of fan fiction into original works is also practiced in Russia. For example, in 2011, the Eksmo publishing house released Sergei Kim's fanfiction Alien Life, based on the Evangelion anime. Despite the alteration, it is not difficult to find the original source. Even the names of the characters are consonant with the original ones: Asuka - Akira, Rei - Rin, Misato - Menemi, Shinji - Shintaro. The original version of the fanfic can still be found on the Samizdat website.
Fanfiction terminology
These days, there are major sites for posting fanfiction. For many years, clear rules for registration have been in effect. The terminology that is used here may seem like abracadabra to the uninitiated. It contains many words that you will not find anywhere else.
Each work is preceded by a header, which gives a brief description of the fanfic, its size, genre and plot features. Do not forget to put a disclaimer in the header, that is, a statement that all rights to the characters, the world and other paraphernalia belong to the creator of the original, and the author of this work is just a fan with his own view of the plot, which he does not impose on anyone. Well, just a little.
The author of fanfiction is called a fiwriter. There are designations for people helping the author. Beta readers, or betas, help deal with commas and literacy, and gammas deal with script correction. Their names are also usually indicated in the header. Among other things, warnings (warnings), notes, dedications and thanks are added to the header. Sometimes the column "characters" is placed, where the author lists all the heroes of his story. A summary is often written - a brief description of the plot, annotation of fanfiction.
There are special terms for works of different sizes. Fortunately, very simple: maxi, midi and mini. And there is more drabble- this is even less than a mini, an excerpt, a short scene, often with an unexpected ending.
Another criterion for separation is compliance with the realities of the original. If the discrepancies are large, it AU(Alternative Universe), or Apocrypha. The same applies to the characters' characters: if the author does not adhere to the canon, then the fanfic is marked OOS(Out Of Character). This is the case when Harry Potter suddenly tries to take over the world, and Voldemort fights on the side of good and meets Hermione. Those who introduce their own characters into the plot of fanfiction mark it as OS(Original Character). And if the heroes of another universe are involved in the work or references to it, this is called a crossover.
Well, the most difficult classification is genre. Its diversity can confuse anyone. In addition to the usual genres like science fiction or detective, there are also very specific ones. For example, there is such a thing as fluff- a story in which all relationships are exceptionally warm and happy. And there is angst, where difficult experiences and dramatic events prevail. There is Hart/comfort, when one of the characters is having difficulty, and the other comes to his aid. And there is darkfictions- gloomy fanfiction, for which the death of characters is typical. By the way, it is customary to warn about such things in advance. Of course, this is a spoiler, but many readers consider this item an important selection criterion.
Since fanfiction is often devoted to love stories, there are also terms for different types of pairings - that is, couples in love. Usually there are categories of jen, get, slash and femslash. Tagging Jen(from General Audience - any audience) says that there is no love line at all or it is of little importance. geth, from the word "heterosexual", means that the story is based on the love of heterosexual characters. If love is homosexual, it is slash(between men) or femslash(between girls). The term "slash" comes from the writers' habit of separating character names in a header with a slash, such as "Harry/Draco".
Finally, PWP- this is fanfiction, where the emphasis is not on the plot, but on the description of explicit sex scenes. It stands for “porn without a plot” (Porn Without Plot) or - jokingly - “Plot? What plot? (Plot? What plot?).
Some sites use a movie rating system. The most neutral fanfics are G (General), PG, PG-13 (by Parental Guidance), which can only be read to children with parental permission (they always ask, of course!). Older reader fanfiction that contains sex and violence is marked R (Restricted) or NC-17 (No Children).
Sometimes authors turn writing fanfiction into a kind of role-playing game in which several authors take turns writing, one piece at a time. It is called round robin(although in Russian there is also the word "burime"). True, if more than two authors are involved in the process, it is impossible to avoid uneven style and errors in the plot. But all participants enjoy the process.
Mary Sue
The classification and rules of publication appeared after some authors amazed readers with the power of their imagination. It's no secret that for every good fanfiction there is a whole ton of graphomania. The most common flaw in fanfiction dates back to the days of Star Trek.
Even then, the authors shoved characters suspiciously similar to themselves into their stories. Only, unlike the authors, the heroes (and more often the heroines) possessed divine beauty and incredible abilities, they were smarter, wittier, kinder and cooler than all the other characters combined. And, of course, more beautiful: they are all chic, with incredibly deep eyes, in which you can drown and drown, breasts of at least the third size and legs from the ears.

Such heroes very quickly became a cliche, which they began to parody. The most famous parody was the 1974 Star Trek mini-fan fiction A Trekkie's Tale written by Paula Smith in the Star Trek universe. According to the plot, a beautiful pink-eyed (!) blonde named Mary Sue appears on the Enterprise starship. She is only fifteen years old, but she is already a lieutenant in Starfleet, and the entire crew admires her beauty, intelligence and talent. Fascinated by the girl, Captain Kirk confesses his love for her and wants to drag her into bed, but Mary Sue refuses, because she is "not like that."
The rest of the team looks like stupid schoolchildren against the background of Mary. When the ship is attacked by enemies, the main characters are captured, but Mary Sue saves everyone by picking the lock with a hair clip. Then the team picks up the virus and cannot control the ship. But Mary can handle it too. She receives the Nobel Peace Prize, the Vulcan Order of Courage, and the Tralfamadorian Order of Tough Guys with one hand, and operates the Enterprise with the other while Kirk, Spock, and company are in hospital. In the finale, even the incomparable Mary Sue cannot cope with her illness and dies dramatically to the sobs of the entire crew, who will remember Mary forever.

So with the light hand of the witty Paula Smith, the unbearably ideal heroines got a name - Mary Sue. But ridicule and parody did not stop Mary's victorious march. She wanders from fan fiction to fan fiction under various names, spreading an aura of coolness and invincibility, making other heroes fall in love with herself and saving the world, and if she dies, then only heroically.
The male counterpart of Mary Sue was nicknamed Marty Sue. Usually this is a beefy handsome man with a beautiful but sad story, a large fortune and exorbitant strength. As befits the most beautiful, intelligent and brutal hero, he wins and charms everyone, and then repeats Mary's story.

Having gone from the Homeric epic to anime and erotic novels, fanfiction continues to exist and finds its audience. And although by its nature it is a secondary product, the popularity of the genre has never suffered greatly from this. After all, it makes us closer to our favorite characters, allowing us to fulfill our wildest fantasies. And some of the fanfics are so good that they even do credit to the original.
