Perhaps, at first, separate islands arose, which then united into a large island or mainland, blocking access to the warm current of the Gulf Stream from south to north. Over the course of millennia, this continent began to gradually sink, breaking up into parts, and, finally, only its central part could remain of it, which was the Poseidonide described by Plato.
After the sinking of Atlantis, the Gulf Stream again gained access to the north. In this article, I will focus on two other grand catastrophes that occurred at an earlier time: at the boundaries of the Permian and Triassic (251.2 million years ago) and the Cretaceous and Paleogene (65 million years ago) **. In terms of their impact on the evolution of life (the disappearance of 75% - 90% of all existing species of animals and plants), they had no equal in the history of the Earth. With the possible exception of another catastrophe that occurred 3.9 billion years ago at the turn of the Catarchean and Archean and which, according to experts from the universities of Arizona and Tennessee (USA), led to the emergence of life. However, we still know very little about this catastrophe in connection with the strongest metamorphic (secondary) processing of rocks and the impossibility of restoring the primary appearance and composition of boundary deposits.

So, what events took place on Earth at the turn of the Permian and Triassic?
Outbreak of volcanism
At the Permo-Triassic boundary, the largest (about 1.5 million km million km3), which were associated with meridional rift zones.
The main part of the traps formed at the very border of the Permian and the Triassic (the so-called Putoran horizon; some researchers attribute it to the very top of the Jurassic, others to the very bottom of the Triassic). According to I. Campbell (Campbell et al., 1992), P. Canagham (Canagham et al., 1994) and other researchers, the outpouring of the Siberian traps coincided in time with the refined dating of the Permian–Triassic boundary (251.2 ± 3.4 million years).
Accumulation of boundary clays
One of the main arguments in favor of global catastrophes is the presence in the thin boundary layers of clays of the so-called "iridium anomaly", first discovered by the American geologist L. Alvarez in 1977 in the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene clays near the city of Gubbio, 150 km from Rome . Most researchers attribute to it a cosmic origin, considering the fall of a large celestial body as the main source of iridium (the content of iridium in meteorites ranges from 500 to 5000 ng/g; in the earth's crust it is only about 0.03 ng/g).
The Iridium anomaly is most well developed in the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits. At the turn of the Permian and Triassic, it has a more local distribution (best studied in southern China and Texas) and is much less pronounced. Nevertheless, the similarity of the layers containing iridium in both cases is beyond doubt.
Near the Permian-Triassic boundary, there are characteristic layers of boundary clays with microspherical nodules enriched in siderophile (Fe, Ni, Co, Au), chalcophile (Cu, Zn, S), deep-seated lithophile (Ti, Cr, V, Sc) elements, platinoids, and , primarily iridium. According to Yang and other Chinese geologists (Yang et al., 1995), in China this layer is bentonite - hydrolyzed tuffite. It can be traced over a large area within several Chinese provinces. At present, its stratigraphic counterparts have been found in the reference sections of Elburz, the Caucasus, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and other places.
In the marginal marine sediments of the Permian and Triassic, a sharp decline in the values \u200b\u200bof d 13C (the degree of enrichment in the heavy carbon isotope), which, according to Yu.D. Zakharova, N.G. Boriskina and A.M. Popova (2001) is associated with a reduction in the accumulation of organic carbon (mainly phytoplankton). At the same time, high values d 13C in Permian organogenic carbonates testify to the abundance of organic carbon in the ocean during the accumulation of underlying strata.
It has been established that the maxima of carbon isotope anomalies fall on the epochs of maximum solar activity and photosynthesis, and, conversely, the minimum and negative values of these anomalies are associated with minimum solar activity (or its absence) and a sharp slowdown (or cessation) of photosynthesis.
At the border of the Permian and the Triassic, coal accumulation, which was usual for the Permian, ceased almost everywhere. Above the boundary clays, there are black shale strata widespread in the Lower Jurassic, formed under conditions of oxygen deficiency, and red beds.
Climate change
Palynological (study of pollen and spores of plants) studies in the Asian region showed that at the border of the Permian and Triassic there was a significant cooling and aridization (increase in dryness) of the climate. Borderline floras are characterized by monotony, depleted species composition and reduction of fern forms. According to V.A. Krasilov (2001) and Li (Li, 1997), the Catasian (Sino-Indochinese) flora is preserved only in South China. However, already in the Olenekian of the Early Triassic (about 245 million years ago), there was a warming and a significant leveling of climatic conditions.
Decreased oxygen content in the atmosphere
The existence of oxygen-free conditions at the boundary of the Permian and Triassic, according to a number of Russian and foreign researchers, is proved by the existence of a negative anomaly of cerium, the presence of platinoids, syngenetic (formed simultaneously with sediments) pyrite, the absence of reef formations, and the almost complete cessation of carbonate and silicic accumulation. According to Yu.D. Zakharova (2001) and others, oxygen deficiency could arise due to a global reduction (or cessation) of photosynthesis as a result of a sharp decrease in the productivity of photosynthetic organisms in the ocean (fixed by a negative value of d 13C), which apparently coincided with a reduction in photosynthesis on land due to the aridization (desertification) of the climate.
Extinction of fauna and flora
Organic remains in boundary clays are extremely rare and are represented, according to V.A. Krasilova (2001), conodonts (microscopic, 0.1 - 1 mm, remnants of the jaw apparatus of an extinct group of planktonic marine animals) of Permian appearance. Black shale strata usually occur above the boundary clays. The invertebrate assemblages here are mixed, consisting of Permian and Triassic components. Although the question of the position of the Permian–Triassic boundary within the interval with mixed fauna is still debatable.
The dominant forms of Permian plants disappear from the geological record below the Permian–Triassic boundary. In marine sections, the mass extinction of Permian invertebrates was noted a few meters below the boundary clays, in which only Permian conodonts remain (V.A. Krasilov, 2001). At the same time, relict Permian forms of both fauna and flora are still found at the base of the Triassic.
Somewhat different data are provided by American and Chinese researchers led by S. Bowring from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), who studied the "classic" boundary deposits of the Permian and Triassic in southern China and Texas (Bowring S.A., et al., 1998). In their opinion, the episode of extinction of life lasted in the interval from 251.4 ± 0.3 million years to 252.3 ± 0.3 million years, that is, no more than 1 million years. Moreover, modern methods of dating the absolute age do not allow obtaining greater accuracy for rocks aged 251 million years. That is, the duration of the ecological catastrophe could be much less and, according to some estimates, ranged from 10 to 150 thousand years.
One of the incomprehensible events that took place at the border of the Permian and Triassic was the mass distribution and outbreak of morphogenesis in saprophytic fungi (the so-called "mushroom episode", according to Vischer (Vischer et al., 1996)
Other important events that occurred at the Permian-Triassic boundary are a massive release of volcanic ash and aerosols, acid rain (which, in particular, is evidenced by an increased sulfur content in the boundary Permian-Triassic deposits of South China), significant breaks in sedimentation (some researchers explain their retreat of the sea, and others by the rise of the continents), as well as the extensive rise in sea level noted in different parts of the globe.
In 2001, a group of American researchers led by L.E. Beker, who studied the boundary Permian-Triassic deposits of South China and Japan, identified molecules of inert gases that are part of the complex hydrocarbon polymers, fullerons, present in these deposits. According to L.E. Becker, they may be the remains of a comet.

And what happened at the turn of the Cretaceous and Paleogene?
Outbreak of volcanism
At the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, the largest (with an area of about 1.5 million km2 and a volume of about 2.5 million km3) Deccan trap formation on the Indian platform was formed, which has a similar composition with the Siberian traps and is also confined to meridional rift zones. Deccan traps are usually dated to the beginning of the Paleocene, although the main outbreak of volcanism, apparently, was short-lived and occurred at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.
In South India, traps lie on marine layers with Danish fauna. Most of the radiometric dates of the lower traps fit within 60-65 million years.
Active volcanism at the same time also occurred in East Asia, as evidenced by the abundance of lava covers, tuffs, and impurities of pyroclastic (tuffaceous) material in the sedimentary rocks of the East Asian volcanic belt, although its nature was already different (the feat of the oceanic lithosphere under the continental one).
Accumulation of boundary clays
As mentioned above, in the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits, the iridium anomaly is much better manifested than at the boundary of the Permian and Triassic. Usually, boundary deposits are thin (from several mm to several cm thick, rarely more than 10 cm) layers of clays or pelites (sometimes with an admixture of tuffaceous material) with microspherical nodules enriched in siderophile (Fe, Ni, Co, Au), chalcophile (Cu , Zn, S), deep-seated lithophile (Ti, Cr, V, Sc) elements, platinoids, primarily iridium (iridium concentration in boundary clays varies from 2 to 80 ng/g), and stand out sharply against the background of underlying and overlying their strata of a different, most often carbonate, composition.
The boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits with a high content of iridium were first identified by L. Alvarez in a section near the Italian city of Gubbio (Alwarez et al., 1980), where they are represented by a centimeter layer of calcareous montmorillonite pelite, probably with an admixture of pyroclastic material, separating two various limestone formations. Subsequently, they were tracked in more than 150 sections around the world (Denmark, Spain, Tunisia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Turkmenistan). So, for example, in Tunisia, the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits are a 1-3 mm layer of rusty ferruginous clays underlain by grayish-white marls and overlain by dark clays, on the Mangyshlak peninsula - a 1-2 cm layer of brown clays among limestones of various composition, in Kopet-Dag there is an uneven thickness (from 6 to 15 cm) layer of brown and red-gray ferruginous clays enriched in gypsum, lying with erosion on marls and overlapping with gray clays, etc. In the west of North America, they are represented by hydrolyzed tuff with microspheres.
Soot accumulation
According to A.B. Weimarn (1998), Wolbach (Wolbach et al., 1990) and other Russian and foreign researchers, in the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits, elevated carbon contents, including soot (spherical carbon particles with a diameter of less than 0.1 μm), are noted. Moreover, if the maximum contents of iridium and shock-metamorphosed quartz are confined to the base of the boundary clay, then soot and total elemental carbon in the Sumbar section of Kopet-Dag reach a peak of 7 cm above. According to scientists, this indicates that the fires began after the deposition of the basal layer of clay, i.e. after the collision of an asteroid with the Earth.
Change in the mode of sedimentation
In the boundary marine deposits of the Cretaceous and Paleogene, a sharp decline in the values of d 13С (against the background of high values d 13C in the Upper Cretaceous organogenic carbonates), which is evidence of a decrease in the accumulation of organic carbon at this time due to a noticeable weakening or cessation of photosynthesis.
Climate change
The selective extinction of heat-loving forms of invertebrates and terrestrial plants at the turn of the Cretaceous and Paleogene indicates a significant cooling that began as early as the Late Maastrichtian, which was replaced by a sharp change in climatic trends towards global warming already in the Late Paleocene.
Conducted by scientists of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University under the guidance of A.B. Veinmara (1998), the study of the oxygen isotope ratios d18O in the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits of the Koshak and Kyzylsay sections on the Mangyshlak Peninsula made it possible to tentatively calculate that the surface water temperature of the Mangyshlak Sea during the accumulation of "boundary clays" was approximately 4°C lower than the temperatures of the end chalk. However, already in a short time (in the Paleocene), the sea temperature increased by 7°C and even exceeded the Upper Cretaceous values by 3°C. A. Sarkar and other researchers (Sarcar et al., 1992) reconstructed the onset of a very rapid (within 1000 years) cooling for the "marginal clays" of the Koshak section.
Decreased oxygen content
The existence of anoxic conditions at the turn of the Cretaceous and Paleogene is proved by the data on sulfur isotopes, the development of platinoids, the absence of reef formations, and the almost complete cessation of carbonate and silicic accumulation. Oxygen deficiency is also associated with a global reduction (or cessation) of photosynthesis.
Extinction of fauna and flora
In the section near the city of Gubbio in Italy, the mass extinction of Cretaceous foraminifers and coccoliths (small unicellular algae), according to V.A. Krasilova (2001), occurred 0.5 m below the iridium anomaly, and the extinction of the dominant forms of macrofauna even further down the section. However, in other sections (Karavaka, Spain; Mangyshlak, Turkmenistan), many Cretaceous forms are found up to the boundary between eras, and some even above the boundary clays with an iridium peak.
G. Keller from Princeton University (USA), who studied the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits in the El Kef section in Tunisia and the river. Brazos (Texas, USA), came to the conclusion that the extinction of planktonic foraminifera began 300 thousand years before accumulation and ended 200-300 thousand years after the accumulation of the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits, i.e., lasted about 500 thousand years (Keller, 1989). However, the main number of foraminifers died immediately before the deposition of boundary deposits and within 50 thousand years after that. This means that the period of mass extinction of microfauna hardly exceeded 50-100 thousand years. In addition, large heat-loving species were the first to die out, and the last were small, primitive and cold-loving ones.
In non-marine sections directly above the iridium layer, according to V.A. Krasilov, the content of fern spores sharply increases, sometimes the leaves of these plants are also preserved. At this level, the Paleogene forms of the flora replace the Cretaceous ones.
Other important events related to the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary are the massive release of volcanic ash and aerosols, acid rain (as evidenced by the increased sulfur content in the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary deposits of the Kopet-Dag), significant breaks in sedimentation, as well as extensive transgression of the sea, dated to the very beginning of the Paleogene.
Scientists of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University under the direction of A.B. Weinmar noted such important features of the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits as cosmic ratios of siderophile elements in them, the presence of impact-metamorphosed quartz and feldspar, stishovite, and shock melting glasses (tektites). All this serves as additional evidence that they were formed as a result of a collision with the Earth of a large asteroid.
According to J. Burgeis and other researchers (Bourgeois et al., 1988), the boundary Cretaceous-Paleogene deposits of the river. The Brazos in Texas are represented by a layer of chaotically mixed sandstones, siltstones, and clays, uneven in thickness and strike, which overlie eroded gray Maastrichtian marls (Upper Cretaceous). They interpret them as deposits of a tsunami formed as a result of the collision of the Earth with an asteroid.
Other disasters
Catastrophes similar to those that occurred at the border of the Permian-Triassic and Cretaceous-Paleogene took place at many other moments in the history of the Earth. Despite the fact that their description is beyond the scope of this article, I still want to note some of the most important features of these catastrophes, which bring them closer to the Permian-Triassic and Cretaceous-Paleogene catastrophes. This is the formation of the largest basalt (trap) provinces:
- at the boundary of the Triassic and Jurassic (about 200 million years ago; 200 ± 4 million years according to K-Ar and U-Pb dates) on both coasts and the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean from France and West Africa to the east of North America and South Brazil ( the total area is about 7 million km2);
- at the boundary of the Lower and Middle Jurassic (183.6 ± 1 million years according to K-Ar dates) on the Karoo plateau in South Africa (an area of about 50 thousand km2) and in Antarctica;
- on the border of the Jurassic and Cretaceous on the Paraná Plateau in Brazil (an area of about 750 thousand km2) and within the Asian basalt province, covering, according to V.A. Krasilov, Transbaikalia, Mongolia and Northern China;
- at the very end of the late Eocene (Chukotka, Western Kamchatka, Sakhalin).
These are also iridium anomalies found by Montanari and others (Montanari et.al., 1993) at several sites on the Eocene-Oligocene boundary.
Finally, this is the existence of oxygen-free conditions (anoxia) about 183 million years ago, established by the oceanographer from Oxford University H. Jenkins (Great Britain) on two-meter, rich in organic matter layers in Antarctica and other regions, a sharp cooling at the turn of the Eocene and Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene.
Refined disaster scenario
As can be seen from the above, the catastrophes at the turn of the Permian and Triassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene, and also, in all likelihood, at the boundaries of other epochs, are evidenced in the geological record of the Earth by almost the same formations and occurred approximately according to the same scenario. This scenario with amazing accuracy corresponds to the description of the catastrophe in oral traditions and developed by the American scientists K. Sagan and P. Krutzen and the Soviet academician N.N. Moiseev to the scenario of nuclear war.
Gloom, frost, oxygen depletion
The study of boundary deposits of the Permian and Triassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene and other geological epochs, as well as formations associated with catastrophic events at the boundaries of epochs (faults of the earth's crust, traps, distribution of volcanic ash and soot in sediments, etc.) ), allows us to give a more detailed description of the sequence of events during the global catastrophes that occurred on Earth. They were like this:
As a result of a collision with the Earth of a large asteroid, a comet, or several asteroids or comets (further one could say "or as a result of a large-scale nuclear war", but the last statement is so contrary to our current understanding of the history of the Earth that I omit it) there was a grandiose ejection into atmosphere of debris and dust of rocks. Large debris fell in the immediate vicinity of the collision site, and the smallest debris and dust rose to great heights, mixed with clouds (or formed clouds as a result of condensation of water vapor around them) and were involved in various air currents by the prevailing winds.
The colossal energy released during the collision of an asteroid (asteroids) or a comet (comets) led to the ignition of vegetation in the area (areas) of disasters, and in addition to debris and dust, a huge amount of smoke, ash and soot from fires entered the air. The energy from the collision led to the formation of numerous fractures of the earth's crust and upper mantle (rift zones and shifts) stretching for thousands of kilometers, the formation of which was accompanied by earthquakes that swept across the globe and grandiose volcanic activity (the formation of trap formations). Hot lava poured out over vast areas set fire to forests over hundreds of thousands of square kilometers, and pyroclastic material thrown into the air in gigantic quantities mixed with dust from the explosion and combustion products.
As a result, after some time, clouds consisting of dust, volcanic ash, ash, soot and other combustion products enveloped the entire surface of the Earth and tightly covered it from the sun's rays. Depending on the scale of the catastrophe, either a significantly weakened part of the sun's rays reached the Earth's surface (in this case, apparently, only part of the vegetation and animals died out), or the sun's rays did not reach it at all. Then the Earth was covered with thick darkness, which, according to indirect estimates (the time of the death of plankton), could last from 10 to 100-150 thousand years.Although such estimates of the time when the Earth was not subject to photosynthesis may be grossly overestimated due to the fact that modern science is simply not able to determine the age of the Permian-Triassic and Cretaceous-Paleogene rocks with greater accuracy; it is possible that the noted period lasted only one thousand years or even less.In the event of a complete cessation of photosynthesis, the vast majority of vegetation and animals died out, which happened, for example, at the boundaries of the Permian and Triassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene.
Further events, or rather their sequence, are reconstructed something like this. Dense clouds that greatly weakened or completely blocked the access of sunlight to the Earth's surface led to a sharp cooling(according to the calculations of N.N. Moiseev, the decrease in temperature in different places on the Earth could vary from-
20°C to -100°C). This event is recorded quite clearly in many boundary deposits of the Permian and Triassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene.As a result of such a cooling, the extinction of organisms that could survive in the absence of light occurred.
In all likelihood, the cooling coincided in time with the period of "darkness that covered the Earth" and was quite long (according to available estimates, from 10 to 100-150 thousand years). This is evidenced, in particular, by the anoxic conditions at the boundary of the Permian and Triassic, the Lower and Middle Jurassic, and the Cretaceous and Paleogene, which were possible only in the complete absence of photosynthesis. The very absence of oxygen served as an additional accelerating factor in the extinction of surviving terrestrial (and possibly marine) animals.
So, darkness, severe frosts on land, a significant decrease in the temperature of the water in the ocean, a very small amount of oxygen in the air or its complete absence, which probably lasted for tens or even hundreds of thousands of years (or maybe much less), led to the fact that at different moments of the geological history of the Earth (by geological standards, almost overnight) up to 75-90% of all animals and plants living on it, which had previously flourished for many millions of years, disappeared from the surface of the Earth.
Some animals and plants were somehow preserved and after the consequences of the catastrophes ceased, they began their second life. The number of surviving species, most likely, depended on the scale of the catastrophe, which determined the level of transparency of the atmosphere and the duration of the period of "cold and darkness." First of all, apparently, the deep-sea inhabitants of the ocean survived, as well as animals and plants underground, falling into a long "lethargic" hibernation (such as some representatives of today's animal world) or using burrows and caves as shelters. (In the case of the existence of people or other intelligent beings in those distant times, some of their representatives could also survive the time of the catastrophe in artificial underground shelters and even take some representatives of the fauna and flora with them).

The listed troubles (darkness, frosts, decrease in oxygen content, etc.) do not yet exhaust the whole variety of events associated with global catastrophes. As noted above,Permo-Triassic and Cretaceous-Paleogene catastrophes were accompanied by significant rise in sea level, which occurred immediately after the catastrophe (most likely, in 10-100 thousand years, and possibly even earlier; according to the available data, we cannot say this for sure).This sea level rise was very similar to the Great Flood.(and ) information about which the Bible and numerous oral traditions brought to us.
What caused the rise in sea level noted by many researchers in different parts of the globe at the boundaries of different eras? I think there are two possible explanations for this event.
First of all,sea level rise could be associated with prolonged (figuratively speaking, “for 40 days and 40 nights”; in fact, for a much longer period of time) precipitation that poured from the sky in the form of incessant rains (and probably also hail or snow) after the cloud layer warms up as a result of intense volcanic activity, fires and the release into the air of a huge amount of greenhouse gases (primarily water vapor and carbon dioxide), which retain the heat given off by the Earth.Recall that such events were predicted by K. Sagan, P. Krutzen and N.N. Moiseev.
Secondly,a rise in sea level (moreover, more catastrophic than in the first case) could occur if some asteroid or comet fell into the ocean. In this case, a huge (probably more than 1 km high) tsunami wave should have formed, which would have circled the globe more than once.Just such an event was reconstructed on the border of the Cretaceous and Paleogene in Texas by J. Burjays and other American geologists.
It is likely that both of these events took place. In this case, they should have been separated in time by a period of several thousand - tens of thousands, perhaps the first hundreds of thousands of years. The catastrophic tsunami was most likely associated with the erosion of previously accumulated sediments and the accumulation of specific, unsustainable in thickness, boundary deposits in a number of regions of the Earth, and with the subsequent rise in sea level, black shale and other strata formed under transgression conditions.

Large-scale volcanic eruptions that occurred at the border of the Permian and Triassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene and other eras led to the release of a huge amount of volcanic gases: water vapor, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and sulfuric gas, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia. These compounds entered the air, saturated it with poisonous vapors and accumulated in large quantities in the dense layer of clouds that enveloped the Earth. As the cloud layer warmed, they fell as rain (or snow?), determining their acid reaction.
Thus, it can be confidently reconstructed that "streams of water falling from the sky" or rains (more precisely, downpours) were acidic. And the expected long duration of such rains throughout the Earth gives us reason to argue that they acidified rivers, lakes and even surface ocean waters, which became uninhabitable.

All this (flooding on a "worldwide scale", acid rain, poisonous fogs and waters with a high acid content) led to the further extinction of animals and plants.
The disaster scenario presented above does not take into account the destruction associated with a change in the inclination of the earth's axis, which occurred repeatedly - almost during all catastrophes. Conclusions that raise new questions
The reconstructed scenario of all or at least the main great catastrophes in the history of the Earth leads to three main conclusions.
Firstly (this has already been mentioned, but I want to once again draw your attention to this circumstance due to its particular importance for understanding the evolution of mankind), it surprisingly accurately (except for the time of the flood) corresponds to the description of the catastrophe in oral traditions, which occurred, according to various estimates, 12-10 thousand years ago. This suggests that the one mentioned in the epic of most peoples of the world catastrophe, as a result of which "one world perished"
(many legends associate it with the "golden age" when people lived for 1000 years) and "another was created" (the world of ordinary people),really took place.
It remains only to find out what this "first world" was and why and how it was destroyed.

And together with them all the material remnants of "our distant ancestors" could disappear without a trace, the time of existence of which, by analogy with the development of our civilization, could be infinitely small compared to the previous rounds of the evolution of life on our (and other) planet (planets).

This assumption easily explains the strange circumstance (and perhaps a delusion) that for almost 5 billion years, intelligent life on Earth has developed only once. Perhaps, in the hands of geologists, due to the above circumstances, evidence of the existence of this reasonable life. That's all. It is only necessary to define new criteria for its search and study. Apocalypses of the distant past
Let's start with the fact that our planet has experienced global cataclysms more than once, which led to fundamental changes in the development of civilizations. But were they fatal?
About 74 thousand years ago, the Toba volcano, located on the territory of modern Indonesia, erupted. Experts say that this is the most powerful eruption that has happened on Earth in the last two million years. Three thousand cubic kilometers of magma were ejected, volcanic ash rising into the air covered the entire territory of modern India with a fifteen-centimeter layer. Huge spaces up to Greenland were flooded with sulfuric acid rains ... The dust that got into the atmosphere did not let in sunlight, and a cooling began on the planet that lasted several centuries.
However, people who lived near the volcano managed to survive! Archaeologists from Cambridge came to this conclusion after excavations in the Indian valley of Jwalapuram. They found stone tools under a layer of volcanic dust deposits. The local inhabitants had to go through hard times, but they were able to adapt to the situation and even continue their development.
Or one more example. For 10,000 years BC, studies show that huge layers of the earth's crust shifted about 3,000 km to the south. It happened, perhaps, as a result of the collision of the Earth with a giant asteroid. At the same time, Antarctica was covered with ice. But humanity was not destroyed. Our ancestors successfully survived both the Ice Age and the Great Flood, traces of which are also found by scientists.

Over the past 30 years, the level of air humidity in the surface layers and above the surface of the World Ocean has increased by 2.2 percent, British and American scientists note. According to their forecasts, if the climate warms by one degree Celsius, humidity will increase by another 6 percent, and by 2100 it will increase by 24 percent. This will lead to a deterioration in the heat transfer of the human body. Mike Pilling, professor of physical chemistry at the University of Leeds, speaking at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, said that the coming global warming threatens to kill millions of people.
However, the anomalously cold beginning of 2006 made some researchers start talking about… global cooling! Moreover, according to Khabibulla Abdusamatov, an employee of the Main (Pulkovo) Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), this will happen already in the middle of our century! Due to the decrease in the flow of solar radiation, the temperature in most of the planet will fall well below zero Celsius.
British scientists believe that changes in temperature regimes on Earth can cause mass extinction of biological species. At the same time, a group of researchers from California came to the conclusion that global warming is accelerating the evolution of some plants. So, scientists grew two sets of mustard seeds in the greenhouse: one of them was collected in 1997, on the eve of a five-year drought, the second - in 2004, after the drought. And what? The generation that survived the drought bloomed and bore fruit earlier than the plants of the first group. Apparently, it was able to adapt to climate changes and learned to produce seeds before the soil became dry.
Why shouldn't we as humans also adapt to climate change? Perhaps constant exposure to high temperatures will change the human life cycle. We will become more resistant to heat, our body will “ripen” and “fade” faster, the childbearing age will significantly decrease (by the way, in hot Africa, 9-year-old girls giving birth are by no means a rarity!). Or, in the event of a cold snap, a race will appear on Earth, whose body, on the contrary, will be adapted to low temperatures, in particular, will have a slow biological cycle ... The same will inevitably happen to flora and fauna.
In addition, climate control installations have long been created that can maintain a certain temperature environment, regulate humidity and pressure in the atmosphere. So far, they have only a local range, but technology, as you know, is moving forward by leaps and bounds.
Scary but not deadly
And what about the threat of ecological catastrophe? And this problem is not new. The Bible contains a description of the “ten plagues of Egypt”, which claimed many human lives. According to biblical tradition, God, wanting to punish Pharaoh for not letting the Jews out of Egypt, ordered Moses to strike the water of the Nile with a rod. From this, the water in the river turned red, like blood, and began to emit a stench. Fish and other living creatures that lived in the Nile died, and locusts, mosquitoes and other insects bred on land. “And the river boiled up with frogs, and all the dust of the earth was filled with midges,” says the book of Exodus.
This was followed by an epidemic of pestilence and loss of livestock. Then a large hail came down from the sky, and for three days the whole earth was plunged into pitch darkness. And in the families of the Egyptians, children began to die ...
American researchers believe that this is an ecological catastrophe that occurred in the 12th century BC during the reign of Ramses II and his son Merenfatah. The cause of all disasters, in their opinion, was the microorganism Piesteria Pisicida, which at certain periods of its development emits a toxic substance into the environment that turns the water red and poisons it.
From the point of view of scientists, the harmful microbe unbalanced the ecosystem of the Nile. The frogs living in the water, escaping the poison, began to get out on land, where they died from the drought. The death of frogs that fed on midges led to an increase in populations of mosquitoes and other insects, including the causative agents of African encephalitis in horses and sheep. This caused a pestilence.
Let's go back to our days. In January 2007, yellow-orange snow fell in the Omsk region. This caused fear among local residents, some were even seriously afraid to leave the house. An examination, carried out at the direction of the authorities, showed that the colored sediments contained metal. There were rumors that this was the result of launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. However, a much more popular version was the presence of emissions from metallurgical plants.
And the mass exodus of cockroaches? Recently, from different cities of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, news has come about the mysterious migration of these representatives of one of the most tenacious populations on Earth. They simply leave. Insect control companies suffered huge losses. According to Krasnoyarsk scientists, the disappearance of cockroaches is associated with chemical poisoning of the atmosphere. And some people think that they are affected by high-frequency mobile communications. By the way, she is also blamed for the mass migration of bees.
Our planet is a closed ecological system, all elements of which are interconnected with each other. If at least one of the links in the ecological chain is broken due to some factors, then the rest will also collapse.
The way out is the development of various cleaning technologies, as well as the restoration of missing links with the help of genetic engineering. Of course, for this it is necessary to preserve DNA samples of endangered organisms, create special banks, and monitor the state of the ecological situation. That is, environmental problems are completely solvable - there would be a desire.
Life-giving radiation?
What do we know about radioactive impact? In many ancient sources there is evidence that once in ancient times our planet has already experienced a nuclear war. The myths of the African pygmies speak of “a great fire that descended from the sky”, and the ancient Indian epic “Mahabharata” tells how people went underground, fleeing the destructive flames ... And yet, as you know, humanity survived.
Gennady Polikarpov and Victoria Tsitsugina from the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas in Sevastopol compared the behavior of three species of worms living in water bodies near Chernobyl, as well as 20 km from it. In both cases, the water had the same temperature and similar chemical composition. However, in the first heavily irradiated pond, two species of worms switched from asexual to sexual reproduction. The third species, not adapted to sexual contact, doubled the rate of asexual reproduction. According to scientists, in this way the inhabitants of the reservoir tried to “grow” genes that give protection from radiation.
People living in the Chernobyl exclusion zone (where the radiation background exceeds 40 curies!), Quietly drink the local water and eat vegetables and fruits grown on "irradiated" soil (by the way, very juicy and tasty).
The effects of radiation on humans are still poorly understood. Yes, in many cases people get sick, babies are born deformed. But not in all. According to Vladimir Mikhalev, doctor of medical sciences, professor at Bryansk State University, in his works, children from radiation-contaminated areas of the Bryansk region are ahead of their peers from "clean" areas in growth, they have a stronger immune system. The professor believes that under the influence of radiation, the hormonal background, the composition of enzymes change. The body gradually adapts to the radiation.
It seems that any biological organism contains genes "responsible" for adaptation to changes in the external environment. Another thing is that they are not always able to "wake up". But as a result of the development of scientific and technological progress, the chances of this will increase dramatically.
Of course, the above does not mean that you can relax and, as before, uncontrollably consume the resources of the planet. But you should not give in to panic - humanity will definitely survive in any cataclysm. If, of course, he wants to.
