Ghost stories are scary because they relate to something we don't know. History is interesting because it tells about real events that actually took place. A fascinating middle ground between these two extremes are natural phenomena that we still fail to understand.

While we constantly continue to study the structure of this world, we often encounter natural "miracles" that go beyond our understanding and force us to enter the realm of fantasy and assumptions. From jelly falling from the sky to inexplicable explosions that destroy hundreds of miles of forest and blood red apocalyptic skies, here are 10 strange natural phenomena.

10 Star Jelly

Rain, snow, sleet, hail. No, these are not the proverbial four elements, but theoretically, these are all that can fall from heaven at any given time. Oddly enough, while we can measure and track precipitation fairly accurately, there is something else that can fall from the sky that we have no idea about: star jelly.

Star jelly is a translucent gelatinous material often found on grass or trees that is known for quickly disappearing once discovered. Many have reported seeing such a substance fall from the sky. This has led to myths that the falling material is nothing but parts of dead stars, alien excrement, or even government drones. References to the strange substance date back as far as the 14th century, when doctors used star jelly to treat abscesses.

Some believe that the strange substance is frog eggs swollen from exposure to water. The problem is that the study did not confirm the presence of animal or plant DNA in this substance, which makes it even more mysterious.

Like pillows, the clouds are not at all soft and fluffy. They are made of water vapor and will not be as soft as pillows if dropped on them. Since clouds contain water, we can understand their shapes and movements and use this data to predict the weather - at least in most cases.

Morning glory clouds are long, tube-shaped clouds that look rather ominous in the sky. Reaching over 965 km in length, these are most commonly seen in Australia during the dry to wet season transition. Local natives say that the clouds appear to warn of an increase in the bird population.

Apart from these Aboriginal myths, there is no serious explanation for why morning glory clouds have this shape. Some climatologists claim that they form as a result of a combination of sea breezes and changes in humidity, but so far, no computer models have been able to predict this strange natural phenomenon.

8. Cities in the sky

No, this is not some comic book fiction or something from an ancient religion. This is reality. On April 21, 2017 in Jieyang, China, many citizens were amazed at the sight of the city floating in the clouds. Many rushed to post photos on the Internet, which scared the rest, but there was no reason for this, since something like this had happened before.

The same floating cities were observed in five different places in China during the 6 years preceding this event. A large number of such phenomena has led to various hypotheses: aliens are trying to break through to us from another dimension, there will be a second coming of Christ soon, or the emerging images are a holographic test of the Chinese or even the American government.

But we need, first of all, the facts. There is a possible explanation: this is a rare natural phenomenon known as Fata Morgana, where light passing through heat waves causes a duplication effect. This explanation could well be accepted if the images in the sky did not differ from what is below them, below the horizon.

7. Star Tabby

Our universe is huge, and there are billions of galaxies in it, which may one day be discovered by our descendants. But in order to discover mystical wonders, we do not need to leave our Milky Way.

If you type: Tabby's Star, you get this information: KIC 8462852, named "Tubby's Star" after Tabet Boyajian, who discovered it, is one of more than 150,000 stars observed by the Kepler space telescope. Absolutely unique about this star is the way it changes its glow.

Ordinarily, stars are observed by the dips that appear in their glow when the planets pass in front of them. Tabby's star is surprising because dips in its brightness amount to up to 20% of the total volume at a time, which is much larger than other stars we have observed.

Explanations for such strange light activity vary widely, from large clusters of planets passing in front of a star (which is unlikely) to large accumulations of dust and debris (but not for Tabby-age stars) and alien activity (which is very interesting).
One of the main theories is that the aliens are using some kind of huge machines that revolve around the star to extract energy. Although it may sound strange, it is much more interesting than space dust.

Although this is not a frequent natural phenomenon, animals falling from the sky are a reality. Specifically, not cats and dogs, but many other animals fell from the sky along with raindrops. Some examples include frogs, tadpoles, fish, eels, snakes, and worms (any of these scenarios are unpleasant).

This phenomenon was observed in April 2016 by residents of Chalchuapa, El Salvador. The sky reportedly turned crimson within a minute and then returned to normal with a slight pinkish tinge. Many in the Christian population believe that the red flash is a sign of the coming apocalypse described in the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

Some of the possible explanations for this phenomenon are that the light coming from the meteor showers, which are not uncommon in this area in April, are to blame. However, this is unlikely as the blood-red sky is a phenomenon that has never been seen before.

4. Great attractor

The generally accepted model for the origin of the universe is the Big Bang Theory: a powerful explosion that happened 14 billion years ago caused matter to expand outward at high speed, which led to the constant expansion of the universe. Although it is generally accepted, but this theory is one of many regarding the origin of our universe. However, it does not explain some anomalies such as the Great Attractor.

In the 1970s, they first began to study a strange force located 150-200 million light-years away, which pulls the Milky Way and other neighboring galaxies to itself. Due to the location of the stars in the Milky Way, we cannot see what this object looks like, which is why it has been dubbed the "Great Attractor".

On June 30, 1908, in the region of the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Siberia, a massive fiery one crashed into the ground before exploding at a level of 6 km above the ground. The hot shock wave killed many animals, and trees were knocked down over a stretch of tens of kilometers. Visitors to the Vanavara market, 64 km from the center of the explosion, were knocked down by its force.

Most scientists believe that the fireball was a meteorite or asteroid that exploded due to the pressure of the atmosphere, its composition, and a number of other factors before it made contact with the earth. In fact, two strange events occurred that night: a triangular formation of luminous objects that moved across the sky, and several motionless lights hovering over the city of Phoenix. A puzzling riddle for science is ... an ordinary-looking hammer. The metal part of the hammer is 15 centimeters long and about 3 centimeters in diameter. It has literally grown into limestone about 140 million years old, and is stored along with a piece of rock. This miracle caught the eye of Mrs. Emma Hahn in June 1934 in the rocks near the American town of London, Texas. The experts who examined the find came to a unanimous conclusion: a hoax. However, further research conducted by various scientific institutions, including the famous Battele laboratory (USA), showed that everything is much more complicated. Firstly, the wooden handle on which the hammer is mounted has already petrified on the outside, and inside it has completely turned into coal . So, its age is also calculated in millions of years. Secondly, specialists from the Metallurgical Institute in Columbus (Ohio) were amazed by the chemical composition of the hammer itself: 96.6% iron, 2.6% chlorine and 0.74% sulfur. No other impurities could be identified. Such pure iron has not been obtained in the entire history of terrestrial metallurgy. Not a single bubble was found in the metal. The quality of iron, even by modern standards, is exceptionally high and raises many questions, since the content of metals used in the metallurgical industry in the production of different grades of steel (as, e.g. manganese, cobalt, nickel, tungsten, vanadium or molybdenum). There are also no foreign impurities, and the percentage of chlorine is unusually high. It is also surprising that no traces of carbon have been found in iron, while iron ore from terrestrial deposits always contains carbon and other impurities. Generally speaking, from a modern point of view, it is not of high quality. But here's the detail: the Texas hammer's iron doesn't rust! When in 1934 a piece of rock with an ingrown tool was chipped off the rock, the metal was badly scratched in one place. And over the past sixty-odd years, not the slightest sign of corrosion has appeared on the scratch ... According to Dr. K.E. Buff, director of the Museum of Fossil Antiquities, which houses this hammer, the find comes from the early Cretaceous period - from 140 to 65 million years ago. According to the current state of scientific knowledge, mankind learned to make such tools only 10 thousand years ago. Dr. Hans-Joachim Zilmer from Germany, who studied the mysterious find in detail, concludes: "This hammer was made using a technology unknown to us."

The highest technology of stone processing

The second group of finds that pose mysteries to scientists are artifacts created after the time of the appearance of man on Earth, accepted today. But the technologies that were used in their creation became known to us relatively recently or are still unknown. The most famous find of this group can be called a crystal skull, found in 1927 in Belize during excavations of the Mayan city of Lubaantuma. The skull is carved from a piece of pure quartz and measures 12x18x12 centimeters. In 1970, the skull was analyzed in the Hewlett-Packard laboratory. The results were stunning. The skull was created without respecting the natural crystal axis, which is impossible in modern crystallography. When working on the skull, no metal instruments were used. According to the restorers, quartz was first cut with a diamond chisel, after which silicon crystalline sand was used for more thorough processing. It took about three hundred years to work on the skull, which can be taken as an incredible example of patience or recognize the use of high technology unknown to us. One of the Hewlett-Packard experts said that the creation of a crystal skull is not a matter of skill, patience and time, but that it is simply impossible.

However, most often, objects are found in the rock that are similar in appearance to nails and bolts. In the 16th century, the Viceroy of Peru kept in his office a piece of rock, which firmly held an 18-centimeter steel nail found in a local mine working. In 1869, in Nevada, a metal screw 5 centimeters long was found in a piece of feldspar, raised from a great depth. Skeptics believe that the appearance of these and many other objects can be explained by natural causes: a special kind of crystallization of mineral solutions and melts, the formation of pyrite rods in voids between crystals. But pyrite is iron sulfide, and at the break it is yellow (which is why it is often confused with gold) and has a clearly defined cubic structure. Eyewitnesses of the finds clearly speak of iron nails, sometimes covered with rust, and pyrite formations can be called gold rather than iron. There is also an assumption that the rod-shaped NIOs are the fossilized skeletons of belemnites (invertebrate marine animals that lived at the same time as dinosaurs). But the remains of belemnites are found only in sedimentary rocks and never in bedrocks, such as feldspar. In addition, they have a pronounced skeletal shape, and it is impossible to confuse them with something else.
