Shebek schemes. Ancient Sheki

Xebek was one of the most typical sailing ships of the Mediterranean in the 17th and 18th centuries. At first, the xebec had from 30 to 40 oars, which, in calm weather, turned it into a galley. Later, the number of oars decreased sharply, because the main driving force of the xebec was three Latin sails, set on three masts. This ship was fast and very manoeuvrable, and due to its shallow draft, it was widely used in shallow water. On the sides there were 7 six-pound guns, on the bulwarks - 6 three-pound culverins. All these features became a prerequisite for the xebec to become the basis of the pirate fleet. Such ships were especially formidable among the pirates of Algeria and Morocco. In the XVIII century, this type of vessel appeared in the Spanish and French fleets.

The history of the ship Sciabecco (Shebeka)

Sciabecco (Shebeka) - an armed vessel of a sailing and rowing type, which was widely used at the turn of the Middle Ages and the New Age for military and transport purposes. In particular, it was used in the Mediterranean region, in particular, the xebec was a favorite ship of local pirates. Their difficult craft was facilitated by the narrow and long hull of the ship and the extended stems. This created a good move for the xebec, allowing both to overtake prey and escape from the chase. For comparison, xebec had an outward resemblance to galleys and caravels and significantly surpassed them in terms of speed. The sails here were used oblique, which is generally characteristic of the Mediterranean Sea, and the number of masts on which they were attached was three.

The length of the xebec was 25-30 m, while the rear deck protruded significantly beyond the stern, and the underwater part of the ship was distinguished by a sharp shape. As a rule, ships of this type were armed with from 16 to 24 guns, depending on the caliber, this was quite enough to fight off pirates, as well as for sea robbery. If necessary, when there was no tailwind, oars were used here. The total number of rowing pairs was 20 pieces, and the direct process was most often carried out by slaves from among the defeated. At that time, the fate of the sea was exceptionally changeable, and yesterday's pirate could well end his days chained to the rowing bench.

Description of the kit for building a model of the ship Sciabecco (Shebeka)

The prefabricated model of the famous vessel was created by the specialists of the Italian concern Amati, which manufactures museum-level products. In this case, the attention of modellers is presented to the product, which is distinguished by original forms, as well as impressive artillery, Latin sails and an unusual manufacturing technique. The hull cladding includes an inner layer made of lime and an outer layer made of walnut. In this case, the body is assembled from elements cut using a laser. For the main deck, thin plywood is used, which makes it possible to fix it in the desired position. The kit includes 20 lattice hatches, as well as a platform for officers with a skilful support, also created using a laser.

The stern of the model is decorated with a small symbol depicting the Livonian cross, there are also cannon ports here. The yards for Latin type sails are significantly larger than the size of the masts, which reflects the original look of the xebec. For rigging, the kit includes 4 threads that differ from each other in diameter, and the sails are made from fabric, which is also present in the kit. At the same time, oblique rigging is traditionally easy to manufacture, especially since the authors have the opportunity to use the detailed illustrated instructions in Russian and drawings that greatly facilitate assembly.

Upon arrival in Sheki, I felt sick ... Some kind of bad pattern came to light - I have been sick for the second time in a row while traveling. I arrive somewhere, I can’t get out of bed almost all day, and only in the evening I find the strength to go outside. And the next day I get up, as if nothing had happened. So it is this time. I think I ate something non-kosher... I suspect that this time it was a green persimmon. Too early to buy persimmons in October! But, be that as it may, by the evening, despite the rain that was gathering in addition, we still went to see Sheki. And I haven't regretted it for a minute!

As you can see in the photo, Sheki is surrounded by mountains, and to get to the main sights of the city, you need to gradually climb the mountainside. Sheki is one of the oldest cities in the Caucasus, and very beautiful, paved with stone. And I really love old cities, much more than modern ones. The first on the way was the Sheki caravanserai of the XVIII-XIX centuries. It is still used as a hotel, and the rooms, by the way, are not very expensive there (if you have time to book, because inexpensive rooms seem to be sorted out very quickly):

I really liked their phone:

Inside the guest is surrounded by the atmosphere of antiquity, as well as throughout Sheki:

Going inside, you find yourself in a cozy rectangular courtyard, which is surrounded by rooms on all sides. Previously, merchants left their goods on the first floors, while they themselves lived on the upper ones. Now it is customary to take all your things with you to your room. The courtyard itself is decorated with greenery, and inside there is an amazing silence:

Turning to the side, we found another attraction - a mosque:

And then they went up to the fortress:

The city has a heroic past. During its history, the city had periods when it retained its independence, and in the 40s of the 18th century, uprisings began to rise in Sheki, which was under the yoke of Iran. In 1743, Haji Chelebi, a Sheki resident, with the help of his entourage, killed Nadir Shah's henchman, the cruel ruler of Sheki, Melik Najaf, and declared himself the khan of the independent Sheki Khanate with the capital, of course, the city of Sheki. The enraged ruler of Iran, Nadir Shah, in order to bring the Sheki people into obedience, attacked Sheki with a large army in 1744 and kept the Gelarsan-Gyorarsan fortress under siege for four months (not this one in the photo, it is a little away from the city, so that fortress we did not see) where Gadzhi Celebi took refuge. By the way, in translation the name of the fortress means "Come and see". This is what Haji Celebi answered to the offer to surrender. By order of Nadir Shah, the city was destroyed, fields and gardens were destroyed. However, all this did not break the will of the people of Sheki, who decided to put an end to Iranian oppression once and for all. Nadir Shah was forced to lift the siege of the fortress and leave Sheki. The Chelebi dynasty ruled the independent Sheki Khanate until the annexation of Azerbaijan to the Russian Empire. The Sheki Khanate prospered and was famous all over the world for its luxurious silks.

These same khans built the fortress, which is in the photo, and the palace, which is described below. According to most evidence, the grandson of Gadzhi Celebi. Who cares about the Sheki khans a few letters.

Palace of Sheki Khans:

The palace is very modest in size, it does not even look like a modern mansion, but it is very elegant, with many carved details and patterns. It is so beautiful that it is deservedly a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List:

Inside, the beauty is amazing! It is so richly painted that it takes your breath away, and the most interesting thing is shebeke, stained glass windows made using a special technology developed by Azerbaijani craftsmen are made of small wooden parts without the use of glue or nails, the whole structure is held only by connecting these wooden details. About 10,000 parts are used per 1 square meter of shebeke. Imagine how delicate and painstaking work it is! The view from the outside does not convey the full picture, but from the inside it looks amazing when the light, penetrating the xebec, leaves color patterns on the floor! For wall paintings, not random plots were chosen, but collected on a specific topic, for example, wall paintings in some rooms were intended to symbolize the wealth and power of the khan, others - noble origin, others were dedicated to military power. In each of the rooms there was a carpet on the floor, exactly repeating the image on the ceiling.

Unfortunately, it was strictly forbidden to take pictures inside, and some kind of museum woodpecker followed us everywhere. But you can see this beauty in LJ annatalia . I can’t imagine how she managed to take so many photos, and how she and her husband did with the museum woodpecker at that moment! Here are a few photos for clarity, Natasha's comparison with the box is very true:

From myself, I can only add a view from the palace to the city:

And the nearby church:

Near the palace there is a museum, and not even one. But since it was in the evening, we only made it to one. Here are some exhibits.

Snakes living in Azerbaijan. Pay attention - gyurza:

Samovar. By the way, it is believed that his homeland is Sheki. Anyway :
