Meanwhile, from the point of view of the chemistry of the future, their possibilities are limitless, and the scope of their possible application is very large. We are talking about humic substances.

What are humic substances?

This is the main organic component of soil, water, and solid fossil fuels. Humic substances are formed during the decomposition of plant and animal residues under the influence of microorganisms and abiotic environmental factors. V.I. Vernadsky at one time called humus a product of coevolution of living and nonliving planetary matter. A more detailed definition was given already in the 90s of the 20th century by D.S. Orlov, professor of the Department of Soil Chemistry of Moscow State University: “Humic substances are more or less dark-colored nitrogen-containing high-molecular compounds, predominantly of an acidic nature.” Only one conclusion follows from this: until today, the definition of humic substances had a philosophical rather than a chemical meaning. The reasons lie in the specifics of the formation and structure of these compounds. Where do they come from and what are they?

The formation of humic substances, or humification, is the second largest process of transformation of organic matter after photosynthesis. As a result of photosynthesis, about 50 × 10 9 tons of atmospheric carbon are bound annually, and when living organisms die, about 40 × 10 9 tons of carbon end up on the earth’s surface. Some of the dead residues are mineralized to CO 2 and H 2 O, the rest is converted into humic substances. According to various sources, 0.6-2.5·10 9 tons of carbon are involved annually in the humification process.

Unlike synthesis in a living organism, the formation of humic substances is not directed by the genetic code, but follows the principle of natural selection - the most resistant to biodegradation structures remain. The result is a stochastic, probabilistic mixture of molecules in which none of the compounds is identical to the other. Thus, humic substances are a very complex mixture of natural compounds that do not exist in living organisms.

The history of the study of humic substances goes back more than two hundred years. They were first isolated from peat and described by the German chemist F. Achard in 1786. German researchers developed the first isolation and classification schemes, and also introduced the term itself - “humic substances” (derived from the Latin humus- “earth” or “soil”). The Swedish chemist J. Berzelius and his students made a great contribution to the study of the chemical properties of these compounds in the middle of the 19th century, and then, in the 20th century, our soil scientists and coal chemists: M. A. Kononova, L. A. Khristeva, L. N. Alexandrova, D. S. Orlov, T. A. Kukharenko and others.

It must be said that by the beginning of the 20th century, the interest of chemists in humic substances fell sharply. It is clear why - it was reliably established that this is not an individual compound, but a complex mixture of macromolecules of variable composition and irregular structure (Fig. 1), to which the laws of classical thermodynamics and the theory of the structure of matter are not applicable.

The fundamental properties of humic substances are non-stoichiometric composition, irregular structure, heterogeneity of structural elements and polydispersity. When we deal with humic substances, the concept of a molecule disappears - we can only talk about a molecular ensemble, each parameter of which is described by a distribution. Accordingly, it is impossible to apply the traditional method of numerical description of the structure of organic compounds to humic substances - to determine the number of atoms in a molecule, the number and types of bonds between them. At some moments, it probably seemed to scientists that it was completely impossible to work with these substances - they were like a “black box” in which everything happens unpredictably and differently every time.

To somehow simplify the system, researchers proposed a method for classifying humic substances based on their solubility in acids and alkalis. According to this classification, humic substances are divided into three components: humin is an inextricable residue, insoluble in either alkalis or acids; humic acids are a fraction soluble in alkalis and insoluble in acids (at pH

As they plunged into the “molecular chaos” of humic substances, chemists discovered what had long been known to soil scientists—only apparent chaos. For example, the range of variations in the atomic ratios of the main constituent elements (C, H, O and N) is not very wide. Moreover, it clearly depends on the source of origin of humic substances. The maximum content of oxygen and oxygen-containing functional groups is observed in substances obtained from water, and then their content decreases in the series: “water—soil—peat—coal.” In the reverse order, the aromatic carbon content increases.

Another pattern has emerged. All humic substances (no matter what their origin) have the same structural principle. They have a framework part - an aromatic carbon skeleton, replaced by functional groups. Among the substituents, carboxyl, hydroxyl, methoxy and alkyl groups predominate. In addition to the frame part, humic substances also have a peripheral part, enriched with polysaccharide and polypeptide fragments. Humic substances, we repeat once again, are one of the most complex natural organic compounds in structure, in this they are superior even to oils, lignins and coals.

To be able to quantitatively describe the structure and properties of humic substances, at the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University we proposed the use of molecular descriptors (the structure is written as a set of numerical parameters associated with certain properties) of various levels of structural organization: elemental, structural group and molecular. Using this approach, the structure of humic substances can be described by a set of parameters that reflect the atomic relationships of the constituent elements, their distribution between the main structural fragments and the characteristics of the molecular weight composition.

An important characteristic of a substance is its chemical properties, that is, the ability to react with other compounds. But what to do with such a complex structure? The range of reactions into which humic substances can enter is very wide, especially with regard to their most reactive part - humic acids. Thanks to carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl groups and aromatic fragments (Fig. 2), humic acids enter into ionic, donor-acceptor and hydrophobic interactions. Translated into the language of environmental chemistry, humic substances are capable of binding various classes of ecotoxicants, forming complexes with metals and compounds with various classes of organic substances. Thus, they perform the function of a kind of intermediaries that soften the effect of pollution on living organisms.

Where are humic substances found?

Humic substances are found almost everywhere in nature. Their content in sea waters is 0.1-3 mg/l, in river waters - 20 mg/l, and in swamps - up to 200 mg/l. In soils there are 1-12% humic substances, with the most of them in chernozems. The leaders in the content of these compounds are organic rocks, which include coal, peat, sapropel, and oil shale. Typically, humates are obtained from oxidized brown coal (also called leonardite), because it contains up to 85% of humic substances. This coal is also convenient because it has a low calorific value, so it is usually shoveled into dumps. It turns out that the main source of humic substances is brown coal mining waste, and this is fully consistent with the basic principles of “green chemistry”. Brown coal reserves in the world exceed 1 trillion tons.

The second source of humic substances is peat (its global reserves are more than 500 billion tons). Due to the fact that peat mining disrupts natural swamp landscapes, that is, ecosystems necessary to maintain ecological balance, peat extraction in the world has been declared inappropriate. However, peat is actively mined in Russia, and in some economically backward regions this is the only way to obtain a livelihood for the population. Peat is mainly used for fuel and local fertilizers, therefore, if humic substances were extracted from it, this unique natural resource could be used more rationally. Of course, from the point of view of “green chemistry” peat is not an ideal source of humic substances, but in the short term it is quite acceptable.

Finally, the third large-scale source of humic substances is sapropel (bottom sediments of freshwater bodies, formed from the remains of plants and animals). In Russia alone, its reserves amount to 225 billion m3. However, sapropel contains much more mineral impurities than peat and coal, and it is significantly more diverse in chemical composition, so more complex technologies for its processing are needed. On the other hand, for the production of raw materials on site, this option may also be useful. Moreover, sapropel often already contains various microelements that are needed as fertilizers and feed additives. At the same time, when extracting sapropel, it is possible to clean up silting lakes.

The main method by which humic substances are isolated is alkaline extraction with ammonia solutions or potassium or sodium hydroxides. This treatment transforms them into water-soluble salts - potassium or sodium humates, which have high biological activity. The method is practically waste-free, so it is widely used both in Russia and abroad. An alternative method involves mechanically grinding brown coal with a solid alkali, resulting in a solid, water-soluble potassium and sodium humate.

Where to use them

First we need to talk about the important role that humic substances play in the biosphere. They participate in the formation of soil structure, the accumulation of nutrients and microelements in a form accessible to plants, and the regulation of geochemical flows of metals in water and soil ecosystems.

By the end of the 20th century, one of the main problems of which was chemical pollution of the environment, humic substances, as already mentioned, began to serve as natural detoxifiers. Humic acids bind metal ions and organic ecotoxicants in water and soil into stable complexes (Fig. 3). It is known that the free toxicant is the most active; the bound substance is not so dangerous because it loses its bioavailability.

In all models of biogeochemical cycles of pollutants, which are created in order to assess the danger, rate of accumulation and lifetime of poisons in the environment, their interaction with humic acids must be taken into account. It radically changes both the chemical and toxicological behavior of harmful substances. At one time, this gave a new impetus to research - it was necessary to obtain quantitative characteristics of the interaction of humic acids with ecotoxicants.

Chemists, armed with sophisticated instrumental methods, enthusiastically began working on humic substances. Today at " Chemical Abstracts» every year you can find reviews of more than 2,000 articles on this issue. As a result, colossal experimental material has been accumulated. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that, along with theoretical research, the number of applied research is growing.

In what areas are humic substances used today? Most often - in crop production as growth stimulants or microfertilizers. Unlike similar synthetic growth regulators, humic preparations not only affect plant metabolism.

With their systematic use, the soil structure, its buffer and ion exchange properties improve, and soil microorganisms become more active. Adaptogenic properties deserve special attention - humic preparations increase the ability of plants to resist diseases, drought, waterlogging, and tolerate increased doses of nitrogen salts in the soil. The advantages of humic preparations also lie in the fact that they increase the absorption of nutrients, which means that less mineral fertilizers are needed without damaging the crop.

Recently, organo-mineral microfertilizers containing potassium and/or sodium humates with the addition of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mo, Co and B in chelate form have been considered promising. They are especially good on carbonate soils, where, despite high concentrations of microelements, their content in a form accessible to plants is low. It must be said that microfertilizers based on synthetic ligands (EDTA, DTPA, EDDHA) are usually used for the same purposes. They are effective, but their industrial production uses both monochloroacetic acid and ethylenediamine, obtained from chlorinated hydrocarbons. Of course, such production is unsafe for humans and the environment. In addition, if you regularly apply fertilizers with synthetic ligands, they accumulate in the soil, and this worsens its properties. Therefore, the creation and use of fertilizers based on humic preparations is a much safer alternative.

Another interesting application of humic substances is the remediation of contaminated soils and waters. They are also being used for cleaning and reclamation of areas contaminated with organic substances and petroleum products, as well as heavy metals. Solid sorbents based on humic substances have already been developed and are being used.

Along with binding properties, humic substances have pronounced surface-active properties. Therefore, they are added for better solubility of hydrophobic organic substances (for example, petroleum products). Humic substances are included in drilling fluids and also serve as the basis for solutions intended for washing aquifers contaminated with aromatic substances. Synthetic surfactants are also used for these purposes, but, unlike them, humic substances are completely safe for nature.

Other ways of using them still remain exotic. The main reason is the very heterogeneity of the structure, which, on the one hand, gives an extremely wide range of properties, and on the other, the nonspecificity of the action.

How can we get away from this nonspecificity and create humic substances with more targeted action? For example, for the remediation of environments contaminated with hydrophobic organic compounds, humic preparations are needed that have an increased affinity for pollutants, that is, also hydrophobic. But when creating humic-based microfertilizers, they, on the contrary, must be hydrophilic and dissolve well in water. Therefore, in order to increase the effectiveness of the use of humic preparations in a specific area and expand the range of their application, it is necessary to learn how to purposefully change their properties. Moreover, the resulting product must be stable and its properties reproducible.

Design of Humic Materials

So, the goal is to obtain humic derivatives with the desired properties (Fig. 4, 5). That is, we need to find a way to modify them, after which the existing positive properties are enhanced and new ones appear. It is also desirable that this method can be used on an industrial scale. When solving this complex chemical problem, it is necessary, on the one hand, to preserve the humic framework as much as possible after a series of reactions - this is the key to non-toxicity and resistance to biodegradation, and on the other hand, to modify the active groups as much as possible in the desired direction. Let's say a few words about the proposed methods and approaches. To increase the solubility of complexes with metals in water, we carried out sulfonation of humic substances at the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University. The fact is that when it comes to microfertilizers with humic acids, the solubility of complexes of humic substances with metals is lower than that of synthetic analogues. To solve this problem, we introduced additional sulfo groups, after which, as experiments showed, the solubility of iron humates actually increased.

To solve another problem—increasing the hydrophobicity of humic substances—we carried out acid hydrolysis of humic substances. Let us recall that humic molecules consist of two building blocks that differ in chemical nature: an aromatic framework and a carbohydrate-peptide periphery. It is known that depending on which fragment predominates—the hydrophobic aromatic or hydrophilic periphery—the surface activity and the ability of humic substances to hydrophobic interactions will greatly change. Our experiments confirmed that if humic substances are broken down into their components, then, for example, frame fragments bind pyrene 20% better than the original preparations.

We used a completely different type of modification to make humic substances more active reducing agents. The fact is that it is the reducing properties that determine the ability of humic preparations to neutralize oxidized actinides (for example, plutonium). We took humic substances obtained from oxidized coal - as we have already said, the main raw material for the industrial production of humic preparations. These humic substances have the highest aromatic carbon content (over 60%) and no carbohydrate moieties. We added various quinoid fragments to them using phenol-formaldehyde condensation and obtained highly active humic redox polymers (Fig. 6). They actually recovered radionuclides better. Moreover, to make the reaction “green” for industrial production, we developed a reaction that does not require toxic formaldehyde. It turned out that this method makes it possible to introduce a quinoid fragment into humic substances “by choice”—one unsubstituted position in the phenolic fragment of the humic framework is sufficient. The result is a whole set of quinoid-enriched humic derivatives with different electrochemical properties.

Our next step is to obtain humic derivatives with increased sorption capacity on mineral matrices (Fig. 7). Why is this necessary? The main thing that stops the use of humic substances in environmental technologies: after the detoxifier is added to the soil and it adsorbs the metal, it is not clear how to prevent its further movement. The ideal solution to the problem would be to cause humic substances to adhere irreversibly to mineral surfaces (such as sand or clays). Considering that the main component of natural minerals is silica, the most convenient way is to create a Si-O-Si bond between the humic substance and the mineral matrix. Then you can get a powder with surface-active groups, which, after dissolving in a body of water, will stick to the mineral surface. The only question is how to do this? It would seem that everything is simple: you need to introduce a silanol fragment into the humic framework - and that’s the end of it. But such humic substances will polymerize in water, and nothing good will come of it.

We turned to colleagues at the Laboratory of Organoelement Compounds of the Institute of Synthetic Polymer Materials (ISPM) of the Russian Academy of Sciences for help. And a solution was found: it is necessary to introduce not a silanol group, but an alkoxysilyl group. Such a substance will hydrolyze in water and release humic substances with silanol groups. No sooner said than done: humic derivatives were obtained (Fig. 7), which successfully adhered to silica gel (a model of a mineral surface) from an aqueous solution. It turned out that by changing the degree of modification of humic substances, it is possible to control the properties that the humic film will have. According to experimental data, the new drug absorbs plutonium by almost 95%.

Of course, it is impossible to cover in one article or even in a book all the accumulated data on existing methods and prospects for the use of humic substances. Publications in recent years contain a large number of original proposals for new areas of application of humic preparations. Along with crop production, they are increasingly used in medicine, animal husbandry and other areas.

The next conference of the International Humic Society is called “From molecular understanding to innovative applications of humic substances.” It will be held in Russia (September 14-19, 2008) under the auspices of IUPAC, and its organizer is the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University. This quite naturally confirms the leadership of our scientists in this area of ​​chemistry. By the way, they are absolutely sure that this is the raw material of the future. Why? Because humic substances exhibit unique biological properties without causing any harm to nature.

Humic acid, or, as it is also called, “the black nectar of nature from the Gods,” has a rich dark brown color, closer to black. This one is organically charged biostimulant, as it turned out, has the properties to have a strong impact on the health of people, animals, and affect the environment.

Since the human body includes many substances contained in the earth, it is believed that substances obtained from the earth are in some way “helpers” of health.

Humic acid used by ancient cultures as a folk remedy for various diseases. It is known to scavenge free radicals and also has natural antioxidant properties. Humates, taken orally, are believed to enhance the body's defenses by attacking negative, damaged or dead cells, thereby reducing or eliminating infection. For example, humic acid helps prevent the development of infection on skin affected by burns.

Humates destroy infectious cells that invade the body, allowing healthy cells to take their place. Russian scientists observed a similar process when studying the influence humic acid on the development of radiation sickness in rats.

Admission humic acid into the body along with food intake, for example, through natural products or clean water, significantly reduces the penetration of pesticides and heavy metals. This approach can reduce the creation of toxins in the body, as well as reduce the risk of cancer. There is an opinion that humic acid- anti-carcinogenic. Humic acids are also often used in veterinary medicine, that is, substances obtained from peat help prevent the transmission of foot and mouth disease in pigs.

Before large-scale agricultural production methods exhausted the rich resources of our soil, the land was rich humic acid. Plants and animals that lived close to the earth ate a balanced diet that included humates. Unfortunately, now the soil is not able to provide such an amount of nutrients to the surrounding world. Animals and plants were left without elements that provide enormous benefits to the body.

Humic acid can be obtained from compost, organic fertilizer or peat, however, the effectiveness of such a product in terms of the amount of useful substances is inferior to that obtained from Leonardite. Humic acid, referred to as "black" in formulations, is a rich material obtained from naturally oxidized and carefully selected Leonardite sources.

Leonardite is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon shale formed in the earth over millions of years by the chemical and biological decomposition of prehistoric plants and animals. It contains a high concentration humic acid due to high microbial activity. The organic concentration in different layers is different. The highest quality strata in the world are found in South America.

The alkaline environment introduced into the soil through agriculture has practically destroyed humic acid. Therefore, the natural oxidative protection that plants could obtain directly from the soil is no longer available.

Humic acids help improve soil moisture holding capacity and structure and help maintain soil stability. Humic acids form salts from inorganic minerals in a form that can be easily absorbed by plants.

Humic acids give the plant the energy to resist disease, as well as increase root strength and the quality of growth of grain crops. Due to acids, soil permeability increases, the ability to retain moisture increases and evaporation decreases, and beneficial colonies of microbes develop near the root. Creating active microbes near the root allows the plant to absorb nutrients from the soil faster.

For use humic acids allows you to achieve the same effect as in the case of soil. In addition, since hydroponics uses the “micro” environment for its purposes, it is a more economical option compared to soil. Adding black acid to the nutrient reservoir in hydroponic farms will increase nutrient efficiency by making beneficial ingredients of all categories more available to the roots. In addition, there is the possibility of accumulating and preserving useful substances in the environment so that the roots can use them as needed.

Environmental impacts can cause irreparable harm to plants: stopping or slowing growth, flowering, or even death. Free radical molecules are generated due to harmful conditions such as high temperature or humidity, temperature fluctuations, high levels of pesticides or nutrient deficiencies, toxicity. Biostimulating activity humic acids resists harmful factors, and, remaining in the plant cells, creates long-lasting protection.

One of the organic compounds in humic acid- carbon that creates sugar in plants. Sugar is especially important during flowering, since the productivity of fruit harvest, for example, directly depends on the amount of sugar in the plant. Humic acid is a long molecular chain that is found in the form of humate in oxidized coal, soil layer, peat and in plants. In very small doses it can also be found in food products: coffee, black tea, fried meat or bread crust. The composition also includes fulvic acid. Humic acids and fulvic acids have a healing effect on the body due to the presence of over 70 useful components in this complex: about 20 amino acids, peptides, minerals, hormones, polyphenols, quinones, etc. Such a wide range of composition provides a variety of positive effects of these acids on a living organism and environment.

Even in ancient times, peat baths containing humic acids were taken for medicinal purposes. They began to be studied at a scientific level only in 1967.

Humic acid: benefits for humans

Due to their naturalness, humic preparations are absolutely harmless to humans; their use does not cause allergies, anaphylactic shock or other side effects. They also have other advantages over other medications. When treating diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and metabolic disorders, humic acid acts on pathogenic viruses or bacteria, binds them and removes them naturally. In this case, the drug is not absorbed into the blood and lowers cholesterol levels.

The enveloping effect of humic acid relieves inflammation and prevents further absorption of toxic substances by the intestines during infections or food poisoning. The drug returns the organs of the digestive system to normal functioning.

To destroy pathogenic microorganisms in the intestines, it allows you to abandon antibiotics, which negatively affect the microflora of the organ and the immune system.
