"Prisoner of the Caucasus"

Officer Zhilin served in the Caucasus. He received a letter from his mother, and he decided to go home on vacation. But on the way, he and another Russian officer Kostylin were captured by the Tatars. It happened through the fault of Kostylin. He was supposed to cover Zhilin, but he saw the Tatars, got scared and ran away from them. Kostylin turned out to be a traitor. The Tatar who took Russian officers prisoner sold them to another Tatar. The captives were shackled and kept in the same barn.

The Tatars forced the officers to write ransom letters to their relatives. Kostylin obeyed, and Zhilin specifically wrote a different address, because he knew that there was no one to buy him out, Zhilina's old mother lived very poorly. Zhilin and Kostylin sat in the barn for a whole month. The master's daughter Dina became attached to Zhilin. She secretly brought him cakes and milk, and he made dolls for her. Zhilin began to think about how he and Kostylin could escape from captivity. Soon he began to dig in the barn.

One night they ran away. When they entered the forest, Kostylin began to lag behind and whine - his feet were rubbed with boots. Because of Kostylin, they did not go far, they were noticed by a Tatar who was driving through the forest. He told the hostage owners that they took the dogs and quickly caught up with the captives. They were again put on shackles and did not take them off even at night. Instead of a barn, the hostages were put into a five-arshin-deep pit. Zhilin still did not despair. He kept thinking about how to escape. Dina saved him. At night, she brought a long stick, lowered it into the pit, and Zhilin climbed up on it. But Kostylin remained, did not want to run away: he was frightened, and there was no strength.

Zhilin moved away from the village and tried to remove the block, but he did not succeed. Dina gave him cakes for the journey, and cried, saying goodbye to Zhilin. He was kind to the girl, and she became very attached to him. Zhilin went farther and farther, although the block was very disturbing. When the forces ran out, he crawled, and crawled to the field, behind which there were already his own, Russians. Zhilin was afraid that the Tatars would notice him when he crossed the field. I just thought about it, looking: to the left, on a hillock, two acres from it, there are three Tatars. They saw Zhilin and rushed to him. So his heart broke. Zhilin waved his hands, shouted to his heart’s content: “Brothers! Help out! Brothers! The Cossacks heard Zhilin and rushed to cut across the Tatars. The Tatars were frightened, before reaching Zhilin they began to stop. So the Cossacks saved Zhilin. Zhilin told them about his adventures, and then he says: “So I went home, got married! No, it’s not my destiny.” Zhilin remained to serve in the Caucasus. And Kostylin was redeemed for five thousand only a month later. Barely brought alive.

After the news came from his mother, a Caucasian officer named Zhilin wanted to visit her, and he went home. However, due to the cowardice of another officer, Kostylin, with whom he went on this long journey, they were taken prisoner by the Tatars. After that, they were sold to other Tatars, who hid both in a barn, chained.

In order to get a ransom, the captives were forced to write letters to their loved ones. Zhilin remembered that his mother was very poor and she definitely wouldn’t have enough to ransom, so he entered someone else’s address, unlike the submissive Kostylin. It's been a month since they've been in captivity. Dina, the daughter of a Tatar who bought officers, began to secretly look after Zhilin. He reciprocated her. Zhilin began to plot their escape with Kostylin.

Having made a tunnel in the barn, they managed to escape from captivity. Kostylin fails again. Before he had gone very far, his legs ached due to tight shoes, and he began to hesitate, Zhilin had to wait for him. There they were noticed by a Tatar passing nearby, who informed the owners about their loss. Catching the fugitives was not difficult. But Zhilin's hope for salvation did not fade away, despite the fact that now they were thrown into a deep hole. This time, the brave and kind Dina came to the rescue: she found a stick of sufficient size and brought it to them. Kostylin did not want to get out, because he was very exhausted, although to a greater extent, he simply chickened out.

Dina had to say goodbye to Zhilin and, sobbing, she handed him a few cakes on the way. And the officer left. It was quite inconvenient to go, as it was not possible to get rid of the shackles. The fugitive could no longer walk, he was terribly tired, but he did not give up and began to crawl. When he crawled across the field, he was noticed by three Tatars standing on a hill and ran after him. Zhilin, who knew that the Cossacks were already behind the field, got up with the last of his strength, began waving his arms and shouting. And then ours appeared and ran to the Tatars, who rushed back out of fright, leaving the former prisoner alone. Later, he told his rescuers about his story.

Summary Prisoner of the Caucasus

An officer named Zhilin once served in the Caucasus. A letter came to him from an elderly mother, in which she asked him to come to see him, and to look at the bride. The colonel did not mind, but there was war everywhere in the Caucasus, so it was difficult to drive along the roads. As soon as the Russians were left alone, the Tatars took them prisoner. Zhilin at first rode alone, but then Kostylin joined him with a gun. Together it was somehow safer. On the way they were attacked by the Tatars. Zhilin shouted to Kostylin to shoot, and he, frightened, began to run away. So Zhilin was captured and ended up in the village. They put him in shackles and locked him in a barn.

He did not sleep the whole night, he was terribly thirsty. In the morning two Tatars dropped in on him, and Zhilin gestured to them that he was thirsty. One Tatar called his daughter Dina to bring water. Dina watched with curiosity as he drank the water greedily. Then all the visitors left, and after a while he was called to the house of a Tatar. They ordered me to write a letter home asking for a ransom. They claimed that for three thousand they would release Zhilin's coins home. But he knew that his mother did not have that kind of money, so he insisted on five hundred coins. At first they did not agree, then he said that if they killed him, they would not receive anything at all. One of the Tatars even called him a dzhigit, that is, a brave fellow.

Soon Kostylin was also brought in. It turns out that he was also caught, as the gun failed. The Tatars told Zhilin that his comrade had long ago written a letter home asking him to send as many as five thousand coins. To this Zhilin replied that since he is rich, let him write. Before writing his letter, he demanded that they be fed, given fresh clothes, removed the shackles and put in a barn. Then he wrote a letter, but the address was incorrect. For a whole month they lived with the Tatars. They fed them unimportantly, but did not offend. Kostylin was still waiting for a ransom, and Zhilin was thinking about escaping. Sometimes he sculpted dolls out of clay. Once Dina, the daughter of a Tatar, saw one of these dolls and took it for herself. She dressed her up in red patches and rocked her like a child.

When this doll broke, Zhilin made another one for Dina, and she brought him milk in gratitude. Soon she became attached to Zhilin, began to bring cheese cakes, milk, even pieces of meat. And when Zhilin repaired the watch for some Tatar, then in the village they began to talk about him as a master. So Zhilin lived in the village for another month. In the evenings, he secretly dug into the barn to escape. Somehow the Tatars returned angry, one of them was killed. They commemorated for three days, and then they left again. Zhilin decided it was time to run. He barely persuaded Kostylin to run away with him. As soon as everything calmed down in the village, they got out of the barn, headed towards the forest and found the right path.

Soon Kostylin began to lag behind, all whining that he had rubbed his leg with boots. Because of this, they were unable to run far. They were noticed by a Tatar passing through the forest, and they were brought back. This time they were put in a deep hole instead of a barn. Zhilin still did not despair. One day he asked Dina to bring a long stick. That's how he was able to get out of the hole, and Kostylin preferred to stay there. Dina gave him cakes for the journey and wept as she parted from him. Although he could not remove the shackles, he managed to move away from the village and move forward. When the strength ended, he crawled to the field, beyond which he knew there were Russians.

Most of all, he was afraid of being seen. Before he had time to think about it, he saw that the Tatars were standing two acres to his left. Seeing him, they rushed to catch up, but the Cossacks were already ahead. Zhilin waved with all his might and began to ask for help. Hearing him, the Cossacks immediately rushed to help, but the Tatars were frightened and did not go further. This is how the Cossacks saved Zhilin. When he came to, he told them about his adventures. In the end, Zhilin decided to stay to serve in the Caucasus, and decided to postpone his marriage. The ransom for Kostylin came only a month later. He was delivered barely alive.

retelling

In the Caucasus, a gentleman named Zhilin serves as an officer. He receives a letter from his mother, in which she writes that she wants to see her son before her death and, in addition, found him a good bride. He decides to go to his mother.

At that time there was a war in the Caucasus, so the Russians traveled only with escorted soldiers. It was summer. Zhilin, along with the convoy, drove very slowly, so he decided that he would go alone. Kostylin, a heavy and fat man, stuck up to him, and they drove off together. Kostylin had a loaded gun, so Zhilin decided to go with him. At this time, they are attacked by the Tatars. Zhilin does not have a gun, he shouts to Kostylin to shoot. But, seeing the Tatars, Kostylin began to run away. Zhilin was captured. They brought him to the village, put stocks on him and put him in a barn.

Almost all night Zhilin does not sleep. When dawn comes, he begins to look through the crack at the place where he has landed. He is terribly thirsty.

Two Tatars come to him, one is angry, swears in his own language, and the second begins to mutter something in his own way to Zhilin. Zhilin shows that he is thirsty. The Tatar called his daughter Dina. She brought Zhilin to drink, and she herself sat down and watched him drink, as if at a wild beast. Zhilin gives her the jug, and she jumps like a wild goat. The Tatars left, locking Zhilin alone again.

After some time, a Nogai comes to Zhilin and says that he must go. They brought Zhilin to the house of one of the Tatars. There were a lot of them there.

One Tatar tells Zhilin in Russian to write a letter home, asking for a ransom of three thousand coins, and when the ransom comes, he, Zhilin, will be released. But Zhilin says that he does not have so much money, he can only pay five hundred rubles.

Tatars began to swear among themselves. The translator tells Zhilin that only three thousand, no less, should be a ransom, and Zhilin stands his ground: five hundred rubles and that's it. And if you kill, you won't get anything at all.

The Tatars began to swear again, and one came up to Zhilin and said to him: "Urus, horseman." Dzhigit in Tatar means well done.

Here they bring Kostylin to the house, the Tatars also took him prisoner: the horse stopped under him and the gun stopped, so they took him.

The Tatars tell Zhilin that his friend wrote home a long time ago asking for a ransom in the amount of five thousand. That is why Kostylin will be fed and will not be offended. But Zhilin stands his ground, even kill.

The Tatar, who was the owner of Zhilin, got angry, gave him a paper, told him to write - he agreed to five hundred rubles. Zhilin, before writing, demands that they feed them well, give them clothes, put them together and remove the stocks. The Tatars agreed to everything, except for the stocks. Zhilin wrote a letter, but indicated the wrong address so that it would not come through.

They took Zhilin and Kostylin to a barn, gave them shabby clothes, water and bread, and for the night they took off the stocks and locked them up.

So Zhilin and Kostylin lived for a month. They are poorly fed. Kostylin is still waiting for money from the house, and Zhilin thinks how to get out himself, walks around the village, looks out, sculpts clay dolls. It was such a doll that Dina saw one day, grabbed it and ran away with it. The next morning, she put red shreds on her and shakes her like a child.

Yes, only the old Tatar woman broke this doll, and sent Dina to work somewhere.

Then Zhilin made another doll, gave it to Dina, and she brought milk for it. And so Dina began to bring him either milk, or cheese cakes, or once brought a piece of meat. Then Zhilin repaired a clock for some Tatar, and the glory of the master went about him. The Tatars fell in love with Zhilin, although some still looked askance, especially the red Tatar and one old man. That old man was once the best horseman, he had eight sons, seven of whom were killed by the Russians, for which he now hates the Russians.

So Zhilin lived for another month. He walks around the village during the day, and digs in the barn in the evening. He just doesn't know which way to go. Once he decided to go up the mountain to see where the Russians were, and the fellow was spying on him. Zhilin barely persuaded him to go to the mountain, he says that the grass must be collected in order to heal the people. The little one agreed. Zhilin looked where to run, he saw his side. Zhilin decides to run away that same night. But to his misfortune, the Tatars returned early that day, angry, brought with them the murdered Tatar. The Tatars buried the dead, commemorated him for three days. Only then did they pack up and leave. Zhilin thinks that today it is necessary to run. Offers Kostylin, but he is afraid, refuses. Finally, Zhilin persuaded Kostylin.

As soon as everything was quiet in the village, Zhilin and Kostylin got out of the barn. The dog Ulyashin began to bark, but Zhilin had tamed her long ago, fed her, stroked her, and she calmed down.

Zhilin ran quickly, and Kostylin barely followed him, only groaning. They took it a little more to the right than they should, they almost got into a strange village. Then they went into the forest, attacked the path, they go. We came to a clearing. Kostylin sat down in the clearing and said that he could no longer walk. Zhilin began to persuade him to go further, but he did not. Zhilin says that then he will go alone. Kostylin was frightened, jumped up and went on.

Suddenly, a Tartar rides past, they waited. Zhilin gets up to go on, but Kostylin cannot: his legs are skinned. Zhilin lifts him by force, and he screams, so after all, the Tatar can hear. Zhilin Kostylin took it upon himself and carried it. And the Tatar heard Kostylin shouting and went for help. Zhilin Kostylin could not carry them far, they were caught.

They brought them to the village, they beat them with stones and whips. The Tatars gathered in a circle, discussing what to do with the prisoners. The old man offers to kill, but the owner of Zhilin says that he will help out the money for him. Finally, they came to the conclusion that if money was not sent for the prisoners in a week, they would be killed. She forced the Tatars to write letters to Zhilin and Kostylin again, and then put them in a deep pit behind the mosque.

Now they are not let out into the world and they do not remove the blocks, they only give water. Kostylin howled like a dog, all swollen. And Zhilin became despondent: he couldn't get out of here.

Once a cake fell on top of him, then cherries. And it was Dina who brought the food. Zhilin thinks that maybe Dina will help him escape. I made her dolls, dogs, horses from clay.

The next day, Dina came and said that they wanted to kill Zhilin, but she felt sorry for him. And Zhilin tells her that if it's a pity, then bring a long pole. Dina shook her head and left. Zhilin was upset, he thinks that the girl will not do this, and then at night Dina brings a pole.

Zhilin called Kostylin to get out, but he says that now his fate is here, he will not go anywhere. Zhilin said goodbye to Kostylin, crawled upstairs.

Zhilin ran downhill to remove the blocks. The lock is strong and doesn't come off. Dina tries to help him, but she is still small, she has little strength. Then the moon began to rise. Zhilin said goodbye to Dina, she burst into tears, gave him cakes and ran away. Zhilin went like this, in stocks.

Zhilin goes quickly, the month has already illuminated everything around. He walked all night. He reached the end of the forest, he sees guns, Cossacks. And from the other end of the Tatars. They saw Zhilin, set off to him. His heart skipped a beat. He screamed with all his might. The Cossacks heard and set off to cut across the Tatars. They got scared and stopped. So Zhilin ran to the Cossacks. They recognized him and took him to the fortress. Zhilin told everything that happened to him.

And Zhilin remained after this incident to serve in the Caucasus. And Kostylin was redeemed only a month later for five thousand. They brought him barely alive.

War in the Caucasus. Officer Zhilin receives a letter from his elderly mother. He says that he already feels the approaching death, and asks his son to come to say goodbye to her and bury her. She says that she found him a bride - a good girl. Zhilin, thinking for a long time, decided that he really needed to go and visit the old woman and went to take a vacation. I said goodbye to my comrades, gave them four buckets of vodka and left.

Because of the war, there was impassability in that area, and therefore there was no passage there, and the enemies could kill at any moment. And it was established that twice a week escorted soldiers went from fortress to fortress. It was summer, it was a long way to go to the right place.

Not only is it hot, but everyone who was riding will stop, because the horse has become, then someone feels bad. In general, Zhilin thought about whether he should go himself unaccompanied. He thought and thought, and then another officer Kostylin jumped up to him on a horse and offered to go himself. Zhilin, having made sure that the officer's gun was loaded, agreed. After some interval of the road, they went to the mountains. Zhilin says to Kostylin, let's see if there are Tatars behind the mountain, i.e. their enemies. Kostylin did not want to. And Zhilin rode on horseback, but before that he told Kostylin to wait for him below. And it was not in vain that Zhilin decided to make sure, since there were about 30 Tatars there.

They saw Zhilin and ran after him. He was on a good horse. Having bought her as a colt, he rode her well. But the enemy had even better horses. He began to shout to Kostylin to get a gun, but it was too late, since this officer, as soon as he saw that the Tatars were chasing there, immediately ran away. In general, they chased him for a long time, as a result they shot a horse and it fell with him, and they began to tie him up. They took everything from him, took his money, tore his things. And the horse was in pain. Until one of the Tatars came up and cut her throat. They put him bound on a horse, and so that he would not fall, they tied him with a belt to the Tatar. And Zhilin's eyes were caked with blood, he could not remember the way.

They brought in an officer. The children began to throw stones at him, and the Tatar drove them away and called a worker who took him to the barn. Zhilin fell into the manure, then found a place and lay down there. Zhilin did not sleep at all. As soon as it began to lighten up, he found a crack in the barn, dug it out a bit and began to observe. I saw mountains there, local residents, a woman with a jug on her head, shaved boys who took a stick and began to stick it into a crack in the shed. Zhilin scared them and they ran away. And he saw the Tatar who had brought him here yesterday. He had a red beard, was all dressed according to the traditions of Dagestan, and a silver knife flaunted on his belt. After that, two Tatars came in, one with a red beard, and the other a little black one. They began to say something in their own language, baring their teeth. And Zhilin only said that he was thirsty - they did not understand, then he showed that he wanted to drink with gestures, and only after that the little black one called some girl Dina. A girl of about thirteen came, beautiful, black-haired. Looks like a small and black one. Daughter apparently. She brought a pitcher of water, gave the officer a drink, and then went down again and brought him some bread. And they all left.

A little later, a Nogai came to Zhilin. The second said, somewhere to go to the officer. In general, he took him to the street. And there are a lot of different houses. And near one of them are 3 horses. A little black man jumped out of this house and told this worker to bring Zhilin into the house. Their house was very clean and beautiful. There they sat, ate the little black one, the one with the red beard, and three guests. Zhilin was put in a corner, and the worker sat closer to the owners, but also not on the carpet. When the hosts finished speaking, one of the guests began to speak Russian. He said that the black one and the one with a red beard are called Abdul Murat and Kazi Mugamet. It turned out that Kazi Mugamet gave Zhilin to Abdul for debts. And Abdul is now the owner of Zhilin. Now Abdul demands that the officer write a letter home to be ransomed for 3,000 coins. But Zhilin could only give 500 rubles, to which Abdul began to swear at Kazi Mugamet and told Zhilin that this was not enough, since he himself, consider it, bought it for 200 rubles. Zhilin began to shout that if they want to kill him, then let them kill him, he will not give money more than 500 rubles. Abdul praised him and said something in his own language to the worker. He went out and after a while brought another prisoner. And it was Kostylin. Abdul took him too. And now they both belong to him. The owner began to say that 5,000 coins would be sent to Kostylin, and let Zhilin give at least a thousand coins, but he stood his ground. Only 500, and if they still bargain, he won't write any letter, and he won't give any money. Abdul could not stand it, jumped up, gave a pen and paper to Zhilin, said to write a letter, he agreed to 500 rubles, but Zhilin also begged for good food and clothes, and that Kostylin lived with him. He agreed to this, and even rejoiced. Zhilin wrote a letter so that it did not reach the house.

They lived together with Kostylin, fed them poorly, they were given clothes, apparently from dead soldiers, at night they untied their hands. They lived like this for a month. Kostylin kept counting the days when they would send money from home, he sent repeated letters. But Zhilin did not wait, because he knew that he would not come. And he hoped he would make it. Zhilin did not let himself get bored, either he would take a walk, or he would do needlework. Once he made a doll from clay with a nose, arms, legs, in a Tatar shirt. Blinded and put on the roof. And the girl Dina saw her and called the other girls. They started laughing and looking at her. Zhilin took it in his hands and wanted to give it to them, they laughed, but they could not take it. He put it back, and he went to the barn. And looks through the gap, what will happen next. Dina came up, took the doll and ran away. The next morning he sees that she went out with her, tied her with rags. Nurses like a baby. Her mother came out, scolded Dina, grabbed the doll and broke it, after which she sent the girl to work. Zhilin made another doll and presented it to Dina. Dina somehow brought a jug of water to Zhilin, sits and smiles, he did not understand what was the matter, otherwise it turned out not to be water, but milk. Zhilin said well, Dina jumped for joy. And since then, every day she brought him milk, secretly cheese cakes, or lamb. And then somehow Zhilin made a lot of dolls and made them spinning on a wheel. The wheel is spinning and the dolls are jumping. The girls brought him shreds, so he dressed these dolls, and one doll turned out to be a girl, and the other a boy. Everyone watched this with great delight. He later became famous throughout the region. Someone to fix something, then something else. So, since he repaired his master's watch, and then completely cured it, without knowing how to do it himself. Everyone praised him. Only the one with the red beard didn't like him. As soon as he sees Zhilina, he will turn away. Zhilin was released, and to walk and visit the mosque. There he saw an old man who did not live in the village in which he lived.

Once Zhilin went to see how the old man lives. He saw a house, near which there were many beehives, and an old man was kneeling next to him. He saw Zhilin, and shot at him, but he managed to hide behind a stone. This old man went to complain to the owner of the officer. He laughs, asks Zhilin why he went to the house, to which the officer said that he just wanted to look. The old man said to kill all the Russians and left. Zhilin asked Abdul what kind of man he was. It turned out that this is a very influential person, he used to be the main horseman, he killed many Russians. He had 3 wives and 8 sons. The sons were killed, and the Russians took one, he found him and killed himself, and went home. He stopped fighting and since then does not like Russians, and besides, he constantly prays to God. But Abdul reassured Zhilin. Having said that he would not kill, since he paid money for him, and he fell in love with the officer, not to kill, he does not want to let go, although he gave his word.

So another month passed. During the day, Zhilin either walked around the area or did needlework. And at night, when everything calmed down, he dug in his barn. It was difficult, because there are a lot of stones, so he rubbed them with a file. But it was necessary to find out in which direction to dig further, so he climbed the mountain by cunning, under the pretext that the grass had to be torn up in order to treat the locals. And they always put a boy behind him. For him to look after him. So Zhilin persuaded him, promising to make him a bow and arrows. He climbed the mountain, although it was difficult. But he saw everything he needed. Plus, enjoy the beautiful scenery. And he saw smoke from the chimney. He thought that this was the Russian house. He now knows where to go. The sun began to set, the mullah shouted. The cows are already being herded. And the boy calls Zhilin home, although the second does not want to.

Zhilin thought to run away that same night, but to his bad luck, the Tatars returned. Yes, they arrived, not cheerful as usual, but angry and brought the dead brother of the one with the red beard. They put him under a tree on the grass, called a mule, sat down, and began to sit silently, only occasionally turning to God. Then they buried him near his head and erected a monument. The red-haired handed out money to the old people, took a whip and hit himself three times on the forehead with it. Then he went home. The next morning, Ryzhiy led a horse outside the village and killed it. Women processed the insides. Then everyone gathered at his house and began to commemorate. For three days they ate the mare, on the fourth day everyone rode somewhere on horseback. Only Abdul remained.

The night has come. Zhilin decided to run. I suggested it to Kostylin, and he became a coward. I came up with different excuses, then they don’t know the road, or something else. But Zhilin still persuaded him. They began to climb, but Kostylin caught a stone, the dogs heard they began to bark, but Zhilin had fed her for a long time and therefore managed to calm her down. The fugitives sat around the corner, waited until everything calmed down. Everything is quiet. Zhilin ordered to go, but as soon as they got up, they heard that the mullah was calling everyone to the mosque, they had to sit still by the wall, wait. We waited and went. They went through the rivers, stones. Kostylin rubbed his feet with his boots, and when he went barefoot, he cut them. And so lagged behind because of the pain. They went a little wrong, but Zhilin understood this in time. They went on the right path, but Kostylin still lagged behind. They were alerted by the clatter of hooves. They crawled up and saw something strange. It was a deer that got scared of the fugitives and ran into the forest. Kostylin began to say that he would not go further, but when Zhilin scolded him and said that he would leave then himself, he jumped up and went. They heard the sound of horseshoes clinging to the rocks. We hid. It was a Tatar riding a horse and driving a cow. Zhilin began to lift Kostylin, and he screamed that he was in pain. Zhilin was stunned, because the Tatar was still nearby, and could hear. He did not want to leave his comrade, he had to carry him on his back. He dragged and dragged, suddenly they heard the clatter again, apparently the Tatar still heard and returned. Indeed, the Tatar began to shoot, but they managed to hide and dodge. Zhilin thought that he needed to run, as he could call his own. Kostylin said that Zhilin should go alone, but, according to Zhilin, one should not leave his own. Zhilin dragged him further. We turned onto the road. Zhilin decided to rest, eat and drink. As soon as he stopped, he heard the clatter again. We hid. They see that the Tatars have come running. In general, the Tatar dogs found them and hit Zhilin and Kostylin again. Tied them up. And they took it. Stopped. Abdul met them. They put him on his horses and back to the place where they were taken. When they brought them, their children began to beat with stones and whips. It took a long time to decide what to do with them. One old man said to kill, and Abdul insisted that he gave money for them, and wants to get a ransom. In general, they set conditions for the fugitives, let them write letters, otherwise they will be killed in 2 weeks. And they put them in a hole.

Life was very bad, they fed leftovers like dogs, they didn’t untie them, they didn’t let them go free. Kostylin fell ill. And Zhilin somehow lost hope. I wanted to do a digging, so the owner saw, threatened to kill.

Somehow Dina threw him cakes, water and cherries. And Zhilin thought if she would help him? I dug out a little, and began to make clay dolls. Yes, only Dina, the next day, was not. He heard that the Tatars were standing near the mosque and deciding something about the Russians. Then they fussed. Suddenly Dina came, but she did not take the dolls. She only said that they wanted to kill him, but Dina felt sorry for him. Zhilin asked her to bring a clay stick. But she said she couldn't. Evening came, and Zhilin began to grieve. Totally desperate. And then Dina still brought him a long clay pole. And she told him to be quiet. He climbed out of the hole. Kostylin refused to go, they said goodbye before that. Zhilin ran to the mountain. Dina caught up with him, gave him cakes and wanted to help take the chain off him, but it didn’t work out. They said goodbye and he ran away. He wanted to reach the forest before sunrise. He ran to the forest, had a bite, he had little strength, decided to run while he could, on the way he met two Tatars, but managed to hide in time, they did not notice him. He tried to get rid of the shackles, but only his hands were beaten with a stone.

And then, finally, he reached the fortress, from where smoke was then coming. He saw the Cossacks. And he only thinks that the Tatars should not see him in the field. Just thought, turns around and sees three of them. They saw him and started to run. And Zhilin, with all his strength, ran to the Cossacks and shouted "brothers help." The Cossacks realized it, there were 15 of them, the Tatars got scared and retreated. Zhilin ran to the Cossacks, they surrounded him and began to ask who he was, where he came from. He told everything, they recognized him, took him to the fortress, fed him, gave him drink, broke his chains. He didn't get to go home. So he remained to serve in the Caucasus. And Kostylin was bought out a month later for 5,000, barely alive.
