They could not forgive the burnt houses, the destroyed monuments of national culture. And even more painful for them was for the dead relatives and friends. The soldiers were not afraid of either hunger or cold. Perhaps they were scared too. But the dream of victory, a peaceful life constantly supported them.
It was 1945. The Great Patriotic War against the fascist invaders was drawing to a victorious end. Our soldiers fought to the best of their ability. In the spring, our army approached the capital of Nazi Germany - the city of Berlin.
The battle for Berlin continued until May 2. Especially desperate was the assault on the Reichstag, where the leaders of Germany gathered. On May 8, 1945, representatives of the German High Command signed an act ending the war. The enemy has surrendered. May 9th became Victory Day, a great holiday for all mankind.

End of the Great Patriotic War
Long months of fighting were drawing to a close already in Germany. The Berlin operation is considered one of the largest and bloodiest in the history of the war. It involved 2.5 million Soviet soldiers, a huge amount of military equipment, aviation. The victims of the Soviet army in the Berlin operation amounted to more than three hundred thousand people.
So many of our tanks were brought into the capital of Nazi Germany that they could not really turn around for hostilities and became an easy target for the enemy.
However, Soviet troops destroyed about a hundred tank, motorized and infantry divisions of the Nazis. Almost half a million opponents were taken prisoner.
The banner hoisted on the Reichstag belonged to division No. 150. The leadership of the Soviet Union considered that it could not become a symbol of the Great Victory, which was obtained through the efforts of the entire Soviet people. Only in Brezhnev's time did the real banner, which visited the Reichstag, begin to participate in the annual parade in the capital.
Instrument of Surrender
The main document, marking the end of the bloodshed, was signed late in the evening on May 8, local time. In Moscow at that moment it was already midnight. Therefore, the whole world celebrates the Victory Day a day earlier than the Russian Federation, and before it the Soviet Union.
Since it took time to form a new German government that could maintain official relations with the victorious powers, the peace treaty was concluded only 10 years later - in 1955.

The morning of Victory on May 9 began with the fact that an act of surrender was delivered from Berlin to Moscow by plane. In 1945, on this great day, even strangers on the streets of cities hugged and congratulated each other. Today, there are slightly different traditions that take root throughout Russia:
- On the eve of the holiday in educational institutions - from kindergartens to universities - lessons of courage are held. Sometimes they are visited by veterans who talk about what they have experienced themselves.
- Laying flowers at the eternal fire. This symbol of inextinguishable courage and heroism of soldiers is in many cities of our country. Both representatives of the administration and ordinary people bring wreaths and scarlet carnations there.

The steadfast defense of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), the Arctic, Kyiv, Odessa, Sevastopol, the battle of Smolensk contributed to the disruption of Hitler's plan for a lightning war.
The country survived, the course of events turned around. Soviet soldiers defeated the fascist troops near Moscow, Stalingrad (now Volgograd) and Leningrad, in the Caucasus, inflicted crushing blows on the enemy on the Kursk Bulge, Right-Bank Ukraine and Belarus, in the Jassy-Kishinev, Vistula-Oder and Berlin operations.
During almost four years of the war, the Armed Forces of the USSR defeated 607 divisions of the fascist bloc. On the Eastern Front, German troops and their allies lost more than 8.6 million people. More than 75% of all weapons and military equipment of the enemy were captured and destroyed.
The war, a tragedy that entered almost every Soviet family, ended with the victory of the USSR. The act of unconditional surrender of fascist Germany was signed in the suburbs of Berlin on May 8, 1945 at 22.43 Central European time (Moscow time on May 9 at 0.43). The festive program on Pushkinskaya Square with musical and poetic numbers, a film concert and showings of famous films about the war will go on for two days.
May 8 holiday on Pushkin Square will begin at 9:30, and will open his film concert of songs loved by everyone, such as "In the forest near the front", "Smuglyanka", "Moments", as well as famous musical masterpieces from domestic films about the war. Host: theater and film actor Mikhail Dorozhkin. The concert will be broadcast in a cinema specially created for this purpose, where a stage for 300 seats is organized for the audience under a canopy that protects from the sun.
At 10:00 the film concert will be interrupted to show footage of the 1945 Victory Parade. It was filmed in black and white and freshly colored by graphic designers to convey the solemnity and grandeur of the event.
May 9 the screening of these historical film frames will precede the live broadcast from Red Square from the 2016 Victory Parade, which will begin at 10:00.
At the end of the film concert, films will be shown in the cinema, and a dance floor near the monument to Pushkin will also work. The brass band will perform famous works of the past years, and veterans and younger participants of the holiday will dance a victory dance. Animation and dance group dressed as soldiers and civilians of the 1940s will help them with this. There will also be a harmonist soldier with whom you can sing songs from the war.
At a music concert May 8 Artists of the Gradsky Hall Theater Alexandra Vorobieva and Valentina Biryukova will appear on the stage of Pushkinskaya Square together with the head of the group Alexander Gradsky. The program dedicated to the 71st anniversary of the Great Victory will be presented by the Moscow Musical Theater named after K. Stanislavsky and V. Nemirovich-Danchenko. 
Throughout the day, interactive installations related to the Victory Day will take place on Pushkinskaya Square. Both children and adults will be interested in seeing the military equipment located around the central fountain of Pushkin Square, or touching an armored vehicle that went from the beginning to the end of the war. It will be possible to take a memorable picture next to the gun that defended the cities of our country and participated in the offensives of the Soviet troops.
May 9 on the main stage of the square, several films of the war years will be shown. At 12:40 guests will be able to see the painting "Belarusian Station", at 14:30 the screening of the film "Heavenly slug" will begin, and at 16:30 there will be a screening of the film "Officers" with the participation of People's Artist of the USSR Vasily Lanovoy.
May 9 at 18:55-19:01 All-Russian campaign Minute of Silence will be held, which will be broadcast live on all federal channels of Russia, as well as on large screens in the center of Moscow, including Pushkinskaya Square.
