Innopolis University is the intellectual core of Russia's first high-tech city. Institute of Software Development and Software Engineering

Physically, Innopolis University is a huge building of the academic building, residential buildings of the campus and a sports complex, having seen the internal design of which, hands themselves reach out to take a photo and post it on Instagram. Students from Kazan and Vladivostok, Moscow and St. Petersburg, yesterday's graduates of regional universities and Yandex employees study here. We decided that no one will tell about life and study here better than the students themselves.

I came here, probably because I was already attached to this university community. In the early years of the birth of Innopolis University, my friends, who are also now studying with me, and I came here to work in STEM centers (centers for additional training of schoolchildren at Innopolis University, editor's note). We were sent to study with teachers from Carnegie Mellon, and this gave impetus to further development.

For me it was a tough decision. I "lost" a year, and now my former classmates are writing a diploma. But I thought that, working in the IT field, in any case, I would have to study all the time. And even though I will not receive a diploma this year, I will have it next. I came here for knowledge.

Anton Trantin, Master's student in Software engineering, Moscow

I am from Moscow. Graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 2009, worked as the head of the IT department of a company that deals with intelligent transport systems. My wife was looking for a master's degree, found this program and showed me - suddenly it will be interesting. I decided to try. I went to the site, filled out an application, they called me, the next day I came here for the preselection. Ok I'm here.

Dilyara Galeeva, Master student, Kazan

I completed my fourth year at Kazan Federal University, Institute of Computational Mathematics and Information Technologies. I wanted to go somewhere abroad. While I was in my last year of bachelor's degree, I worked and at the same time I was looking for a master's degree. I heard a lot about Innopolis, and then I saw a presentation of the Master's program "Management of Software Development" or Master of Science in Information Technology - Software Engineering, which is implemented on the basis of materials from Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA) and thought: "Why not ?

But I was not accepted to this program due to lack of proper work experience. And they took a 90% grant. I got here from the Wait list, I was only informed at the last moment that I passed.

I am studying in a program called Master of Science in Information Technology - Software Engineering, which is the organization of software development processes. The program is based on licensed materials from Carnegie Mellon University. Learning is difficult.

If someone had told me earlier that it was possible to study like this, I would not have believed it. It's a very long marathon under constant pressure. You work at the highest pace, overwhelmed with tasks, and the week does not end.

The main motto of our program is "Learning by doing", so there is a lot of emphasis on practice. This is where the approach to problem analysis is reversed. Critical thinking develops strongly, and then, even while reading books, you begin to cling to the words of the author: “What does good mean? What does bad mean? There should be no blurry abstractions, everything should be measurable and doable.

The output from us should be either a project manager or a system architect.

Dilyara Galeeva

The whole first semester here, I tried to understand all the subjects myself, not to ask for help, not to be a cheater. If earlier I could afford this, then here the main goal of everyone is to gain knowledge, and there is no point in writing off or solving something according to a template or example. It was difficult. And then, I think, it will not be easier.

In this session, out of three exams, students “hacked” two. The first of them was supposed to be on Monday morning, but it was postponed because the students got their exam papers in advance and they had to be compiled again. And when we came to another exam on Thursday, before our eyes the teacher tore up all the prepared tickets, because they were also “hacked”. But you immediately feel - yes, I really study at an IT university.

Semyon Zorin

If you study well, no difficulties should arise. Last semester, I handed everything in at the last moment, but you don’t have to do that.

In our master's program, the main direction is Software Engineering. In addition, there is a master's degree in robotics, data analysis and security of systems and networks.

Here people with very different levels of knowledge. Someone came here because they felt that economics or the humanities were not for him. He himself studied IT and realized that here was his second chance. Thanks to perseverance and motivation, he got into Innopolis University, but he has almost zero knowledge. And, in my opinion, such people are now the most successful, because they work very hard on themselves. And there are those who quit their jobs at Yandex to come to study here. Innopolis attracted a lot of people, probably because of this atmosphere of IT people - people who understand you and speak the same language with you.

Anton Trantin

The average age of the guys who gathered at our master's program is 26-27 years old, and people already have a lot of experience, they managed to work in the industry, and this program suits us very well. You understand what mistakes you made before and how you could have avoided them. For those who came only after university, with six months of work experience, it is a little harder.

student life

Yulduz Fattakhova

There is a free sports complex and in winter free access to the ski base. Sports are widely promoted here, and now a programmer is not a big shapeless person in a stretched T-shirt, he is handsome, pumped up and generally perfect.

Sometimes in the evenings we get together, play board games, talk about our projects or go to Kazan for additional entertainment. Recently there was a Student's Day and everyone was presented with a free trip to the entertainment center.

In terms of study, I saw everything that I expected here. Very cool professors, interesting program. When we came to the selection, the director of the university told us: “There are transparent doors everywhere so that you can, without fear, come in, for example, to me, and ask any question as your friend.” And I love it.

Mikhail Boronin

Here circles are organized in languages - Chinese, German, French, English. There are robotics, drawing, dancing. There is also a library, everyone reads a lot. Sometimes the guys get together and watch movies. For example, on October 21, 2015, the day of "arrival" Doc and Marty with Jennifer from the movie "Back to the Future", arranged such a movie screening.

There is a student association. It is divided into committees. I try to help the sports direction. Now we are negotiating with the sports complex so that the guys can hold their sections there.

There is a student online magazine, a Telegram channel "Innovach". There is some talk about KVN. There are clubs for music and dancing. Maybe there will be something like a Student Spring concert. If there are those who want to do it, it's not bad.

Dilyara Galeeva

Innopolis University has now opened a free rental of equipment for the ski complex, which is very close here. You just need to sign up in advance, everything is sorted out very quickly. The ski pass is also free here. Shuttles run from Innopolis to the ski area. And it's all free for students.

Anton Trantin

It all depends on how you study. If you do tasks for the sake of simply passing them, then, probably, you can have time to do something else. But if you learn by immersing yourself in tasks, doing them efficiently and at a high level, then the load is very high. On average, 60 hours of net working time per week.

Dormitories

website / Lesya Polyakova

Mikhail Boronin

I think the hostels here are among the best in Russia. Before that, I had been in Moscow dormitories of friends. The conditions there are generally not very good: cockroaches, dirt, a strict commandant. And here are the positives. We are not limited in time, we are cleaned, there is the Internet, the commandant is ready to help in everything. There are two types of rooms - doubles and five-beds. But the five-seater is like a small apartment with two rooms and a shared kitchen. You can choose with whom to live, move freely. My friend and I first lived in a double room, but it seemed cramped to us, and we moved to a five-seater. Our neighbors are from St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Moscow. Only 30% of students here are from the Republic of Tatarstan. There are guys from Ukraine, Africa, Mexico.

For food, we deduct from 2.4 to 9 thousand rubles a month from the scholarship, depending on the choice. You can take breakfast, lunch and dinner, or just lunch, or completely refuse food.

Yulduz Fattakhova

Dorms are super cool! Very convenient and comfortable. They are not what we used to imagine hostels in Russia: a lot of rooms and a bathroom-toilet per floor. There is no such thing here, everyone has their own place, space, all amenities, there are water coolers on each floor. Everything is done so that the student learns and is not distracted by any extraneous problems.
