Why do you need a data reset?

Resetting device data (settings reset, hard reset, factory reset) is the deletion of all data from a smartphone or tablet: contacts, messages, downloaded applications, photos, music, mail settings, alarm clocks. After the reset, the smartphone or tablet returns to the factory state.

Usually data reset is done in the following cases:

  • Before selling or transferring the device to another person;
  • If there is a problem on the device that cannot be fixed in other ways;
  • After updating the device software (firmware).

What to do before data reset

1. Copy important information from the device.

During the reset, the device memory will be cleared and all data will be deleted. If there is any important data, make a copy of it.

2. Remove your Google account from your device.

If this is not done, then when the device is turned on after the reset, the account that was on the device before the reset will be requested. Without entering this account, you will not be able to turn on the device.

The first way to do a data reset is through the menu

The second way to do a data reset is using the buttons

This method is used when the smartphone or tablet does not turn on, or the screen is locked.

If the device does not turn on after the reset, a Google account is required

If the device does not turn on after the reset (freezes)

Contact the Samsung service center, you need to reinstall the firmware by an engineering method.

Samsung Galaxy A5 has a very easy method needed to access the recovery partition (Recovery Mode) similar to other Samsung devices. If you haven't installed a custom recovery this process will lead you to the in-built recovery. The stock recovery comes in handy when you need to wipe your device, wipe the cache, wipe Dalvik cache or flash a OTA package from Samsung. On the other hand, if you have a custom recovery installed then you can utilize all the extra features such as formatting key partitions, flashing custom ROMs and much more. You can get into the recovery mode on Galaxy A5 using the simple steps we have given below.

Like we mentioned earlier, we have the Galaxy A5 with us for a while and we will be doing several basic tutorials based on this Android device. Many of you might even have a custom recovery installed, like TWRP or ClockworkMod - the famous two. This can come really handy because a custom recovery can let you load a custom ROM, create a system wide backup or even format specific partitions - pretty advance stuff can be done to your phone. Let’s move down further and see how can you enter this Recovery Mode on the Samsung Galaxy A5.

Some Android phones, like the Sony Xperia series do not come with a stock Android recovery at all, and in that case, we would have to load a custom recovery first to that phone and then enter it. However, Samsung Android phones do come with a stock recovery and some Android specific functions i.e. installing a software update, doing a full hard reset etc. are only performed through a Recovery Mode. Whenever you do them, the phone first takes you to the stock Android recovery and then performs that specific function.

What is Recovery Mode?

Recovery Mode is a feature native to Android. You can find this mode on all Android devices – the way to access it on each phone, however, is different. There is no need of unlocking the bootloader in order to get to this mode. Hence, the functions provided by recovery are totally legal and would not void any sort of warranty.

Looking at what those functions are, firstly you get the option of applying an update. You can use this feature to install official OTA (Over-the-air) packages. This feature is very handy when you experience a delay in the update arriving to your device. Recovery is also used by Samsung itself. You’ll notice your phone rebooting into a dead android logo and showing a progress bar while applying an OTA update, this is the recovery.

Then there are options of wiping data or wiping the cache partition. If you choose the wipe data option, the recovery will reset your device and erase all data to factory settings. This comes in handy when you experience a bootloop or your phone starts slowing down. On the other hand, wiping the cache partition only deletes temporary data accumulated by apps not your personal data. Usually this is recommended when you are experiencing app crashes or severe battery drainage.

Misuse of the recovery is very dangerous, until unless you know what you are doing don't play around with this. However, security and verification procedures are in place to prevent this. If you do try flashing wrong files, the recovery will verify first and give you an error rather than going on with the process and potentially ruining your phone.

Custom recoveries are fundamentally the same, just that a few extra functions are added. Custom recoveries like ClockworkMod (CWM) and TweamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) allow you to create system backups, give you the ability to format every partition and allow custom ZIP files to be flashed. These features are not present in the stock recovery due to security restrictions. When you do install a custom recovery, the way to access it will remain the same.

You can enter Recovery Mode on the Samsung Galaxy S4 using the following three methods:

  • by hardware buttons
  • by ADB on Windows
  • by ADB on Mac OS X

Let's have a look at each method below. You can use whichever way you find the easiest.

NOTE: The following steps can be used to enter Recovery Mode on the Samsung Galaxy A5 (all variants).

Method 1 – Enter Recovery Mode using Hardware Buttons on Samsung Galaxy A5

Step 1- Turn OFF your phone.

Step 2- Now press and hold the following buttons for a few seconds, all at the same time: Power + Volume Up + Home.

Step 3 - After a few seconds, you should see the Recovery Mode screen on your Samsung Galaxy A5.

You can now navigate around the recovery mode using your volume and power buttons!

Method 2 – Enter Recovery Mode using ADB on Windows

Method 3 – Enter Recovery Mode using ADB on Mac OS X

This is a great tool that can be used to wipe data, factory reset, format the system partition, install a custom kernel, new firmware and a lot of other things that should allow you to improve your smartphone and its system.

Recovery mode can be stock or custom. Stock Recovery Mode is the first and original version that is installed initially on a smartphone and you can work with it immediately after purchase. This mode works on a stock smartphone or already rooted, but not on a Galaxy smartphone that is flashed with custom firmware.

Custom Recovery Mode can only be installed after rooting your smartphone. There are two most popular custom recovery for ClockworkMod Galaxy smartphones - CWM and TWRP - Team Win Recovery Project. Both of them are very similar in their features and you can get the same features in either of them. Below you will learn how to boot Samsung Galaxy smartphone in recovery mode.

How to boot Samsung Galaxy smartphone into stock/CWM/TWRP recovery mode:

  • Turn off the device completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up buttons, the Home button, and the Power button at the same time.
  • Release the buttons when the smartphone screen turns on and you see the stock / CWM / TWRP recovery logo.
After you release the buttons, you will already see the main menu of the recovery mode. Here you can set the desired settings or perform important actions with the system, including installing custom or other stock firmware.

To boot in normal mode, you need to return to the main screen of the recovery mode and select the "Reboot system" item.
