In the anime series, as well as in all animated films, OVAs and other offshoots of the series, Luffy voices the voice of Mayumi Tanaka. In OVA Defeat the Pirate Ganzack!, prior to the series, Luffy was voiced by Urara Takano. Feedback and perception
Luffy has been number one three times on the Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump. Mike McFarland and Christopher Sabat, who voiced the Funimation Entertainment dub, noted that Luffy is more charismatic than Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball. Luffy was nominated for Best Male Character at the 2008 Japanese Animation Awards, but lost out to Alucard from the Hellsing manga.
T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews described Luffy as a "cute idiot", deeming him to be very optimistic and idealistic. In the review of the fourth feature film Dead End Adventure The Star Online notes that Luffy is "a great fighter" but also "absolutely empty-headed". Rika Takahashi, in an article on EX.org, noted that Luffy's stretching abilities set him apart from the main characters in the shounen manga, and considered that they brought "something fresh and interesting" to the series. Anime News Network compared Luffy to the main character of anime and manga Rurouni Kenshin Himura Kenshin, since both have similar personalities. Mania Entertainment called Luffy a "great shounen hero".

He is the son of the commander of the Dragon Revolutionary Army, the grandson of the famous Marine Vice Admiral Garp, and the half-brother of the late "Firefist" Ace and Sabo. His dream is to become the Pirate King by finding the legendary treasure left behind by Pirate King Gol D. Roger. He believes that becoming the Pirate King will make him the freest man in the world. As the founder and captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, he is the team's first member and one of its three strongest fighters.
