The names for the songs must be chosen very carefully in order to avoid later all sorts of misunderstandings. Members of the legendary band The Beatles are well aware of this. For more than forty years they have been forced to explain why the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (“Lucy in the sky with diamonds”), written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney in 1967, is called that.
Of course, The Beatles have songs with weirder titles, but this one has become one of the most talked about. The fact is that the first letters of the nouns in the phrase Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds add up to the abbreviation LSD, which in most rock music lovers immediately evokes associations with the well-known hallucinogenic drug.
A match (or not a match) was discovered immediately after the release of the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the authors of the song, had to make excuses, because a serious sensation arose, and the BBC even refused to let the song air.
The history of creation and the meaning of the song
Lennon himself claimed that he composed the words of the composition under the impression of a drawing by his son Julian, who depicted his classmate Lucy O'Donnell on it. The girl flies through the sky dotted with diamonds. Lennon also said that he took the images from the fairy tale "Alice in Wonderland".
Julian later said that he really liked the girl, but he could not explain why he portrayed her in this form. Lucy also confirmed this version, but it was much later, in 2004.
And yet, it was not possible to dispel doubts that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was associated with the use of LSD. It's not just the controversial name. The text of the song and the video clip shot for it involuntarily suggests the idea that the composition of the composition could not have done without "acid".
A few years ago, Paul McCartney added fuel to the fire by confirming that some of The Beatles' songs, including Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, do contain hints of drugs. But, according to him, it is not worth exaggerating their influence on the work of the group.
Perhaps, as is usually the case, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Be that as it may, the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band turned out to be very successful, and the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds became one of the Beatles' most striking compositions.
In 1974, Elton John performed a new version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, in which John Lennon accompanies him on guitar. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
There are some other funny rumors connected with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. In 2005, the Daily Mail ran an article that the song was about artist and actress Lucy Richardson. And in Russia, some are even sure that The Beatles dedicated the song to Lyudmila Zykina, with whom they once performed at an event in the United States.

- References to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds are found in the songs of many famous bands (Pink Floyd, Spleen, Civil Defense).
- The song was named after the Australopithecus, whose skeleton was found in 1974 by archaeologists Johanson and Gray, as well as the variable star BPM 37093, allegedly representing a huge diamond.

The night of February 28, 1967, The Beatles spent the song rehearsal. The next day they recorded seven takes of the rhythm track (piano, acoustic guitar, organ, drums and maracas). In the seventh take, Harrison played the tampura, an Indian stringed instrument with a monotonous sound. On March 2, John recorded lead vocals on two tracks, and Paul recorded harmony. Then they overdubbed McCartney's bass and Harrison's lead guitar, and that was it. It was the fastest entry for the "Sgt. Pepper" album.
A composition of the rhythm track from take six, tampura from take seven and vocals was released on the 1996 album Anthology 2.
John Lennon wrote this song with a little help from Paul McCartney.
Paul says: "I drove over to John's house and saw Julian's school drawing with the caption: 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds.' and 'newspaper taxis' and John 'kaleidoscopic eyes' and 'mirror ties'. We didn't even notice that the letters in the song's title made up 'LSD' until we were told about it - but people didn't believe it."
The release of the song caused a lot of controversy in the press due to the fact that the first letters in the title form the abbreviation "LSD", which was associated with the drug of the same name. In fact, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was born from a drawing by four-year-old Julian Lennon of his classmate.
John: "I swear to God, I swear to Mao and anyone, I had no idea that the first letters of the name spelled "LSD". Here it was: my son brought home a drawing of a strange woman flying through the sky and showed it to me. I asked: “What is it?” And he said: “It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds.” I thought: “How beautiful it sounds!” - and immediately wrote a song about it.
The heroine of the song was called Lucy O "Donnell (1963 - 2009). Together with Julian Lennon, she went to the Weybridge kindergarten "Heath House", and did not realize the fact that her image was immortalized in the Beatles song until she turned thirteen in 1976.
In May 2011, a piece of paper on which John Lennon wrote the lyrics of this song went under the hammer for 237 thousand dollars. On the same sheet you can find the first lines of the song She's Leaving Home.
