Meiendorf Castle. Moscow region

In 1886, the young lady got married, and her husband, Colonel of the General Staff Evgeny Alexandrovich Verigin, began remodeling the building together with the architect Peter Boitsov, who played an important role in the architectural history of Barvikha. However, a fatal accident interrupted Verigin's life. Nadezhda Alexandrovna is getting married again - to Meyendorff, a descendant of the most ancient baronial family. So she became a baroness, and the castle got the name - "Castle of Baroness Meiendorf", which he still bears. On his instructions, the castle is being rebuilt, acquiring new towers and a brick wall around.

The castle has been visited by many famous people. A memorial sign installed on the walls of the castle says that Emperor Nicholas II came to the castle.

In 1914, the baron and the baroness left the castle - they went abroad for treatment and never returned to Russia.

After the October Revolution, V.I. lived and worked in the castle for some time. Lenin, and in 1935, the Barvikha sanatorium of the USSR Council of Ministers was organized on the territory of the former noble estate, where Mikhail Bulgakov, Sergei Korolev and Yuri Gagarin were treated and rested at different times.

Later, the castle became the house of culture of the trade union of the state farm "Barvikha".

In 2003-2004, the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation carried out a large-scale reconstruction of the castle.

Restoration work restored the former luxury: spiers, windows, white stone, gilding - everything is preserved very carefully and without the slightest sign of a "remake".

The unique tapestry "The Flood" placed on the ceiling of the large fireplace room has been restored.

A certain difficulty arose when choosing a brick, since the same texture as it was before is simply not found now. which are depicted on ancient documents. Despite double-glazed windows, a second frame was added to them, preserving the castle look. Inside, there were serious changes related to the new functionality of the lock and modern technological requirements. In addition, a basement floor appeared in the castle, which housed technical rooms and a kitchen.

Meiendorf Castle consists of a main house and an outbuilding connected by a passage. Both buildings are 3-storey with an attic and a basement.

The main house on the ground floor has three fireplace rooms, as well as rooms for banquets and meetings. Initially, the castle had six fireplaces, but the restorers did not have the task of restoring all of them. Only three were left, each of which is in its own hall with an individual interior.

For example, the third small fireplace room contains a gilded coat of arms of the Meiendorf family. The Great Hall is decorated with the same historical tapestry restored. Two more tapestries from the castle are stored in the Armory. Previously, the castle previously had 16 ancient carpets, but the location of the rest could not be found.

This interior now periodically appears in various news during reports of meetings of the president with other statesmen in Meiendorf.

The castle has modern ventilation and air conditioning systems. It is not easy to create such an engineering infrastructure in an old building. Technical elements are completely hidden in the wall, and for example, ventilation hatches are stylized and fit into ancient interiors.

Screen painting was used to decorate the walls: in each room - with its own special pattern. The restorers had to remove more than 18 layers of paint to reveal a delicate and elegant painting pattern. The walls of the corridors are covered with English silk.

I did not know that the new President Medvedev chose such a beautiful castle for his residence. This speaks of his very good taste. Nothing like this has ever been observed by our representatives of the authorities. Then I read how he received Sarkozy in this castle and decided to find out what kind of castle it was. Well, I'll tell you, it's just nonsense. There has never been such a stylish residence. There are many of his photos here: http://www.meiendorf.ru/o_zamke.htm
Against the backdrop of the classical style of noble estates of the 19th century, the castle of the barons Meiendorf, built near Barvikha near Moscow, became bright and unexpected. The basis of the unusual image is neo-gothic, romantic and luxurious. Nowadays, elements restored from old engravings and photographs are combined with careful stylization of interiors. It does not have a museum atmosphere, it is active, since it was reconstructed for state purposes - meetings, receptions and other official events are regularly held here. Despite its official status as a government residence, Meiendorf Castle is not a territory closed to visitors. Its beauty is accessible not only to the head of state and his guests - the castle regularly hosts private corporate and festive events, the organizers of which invariably note the high level of hospitality and goodwill from staff and administration of the castle. The history of the castle begins in 1874, when the romantic daughter of General Kazakov, Nadezhda Aleksandrovna, convinced her father to build a castle in the spirit of medieval chivalric novels. It was then, away from the small village of Podushkino (the future Barvikha), that a miniature wooden castle was erected, located on the shore of a pond. Outlandish trees were planted in the nearby park, which could only be obtained then. In 1886, the young lady got married, and her husband, Colonel of the General Staff Yevgeny Alexandrovich Verigin, began remodeling the building together with the architect Peter Boitsov, who played an important role in the architectural history of Barvikha. However, a fatal accident interrupts Verigin's life. Nadezhda Alexandrovna is getting married again - to Meyendorff, a descendant of the most ancient baronial family. At his direction, the castle is being rebuilt, acquiring new towers and a brick wall around. On the ground floor, in the fireplace hall, a tapestry on the theme of the Great Flood is being strengthened, presumably by Benois. The tapestry is surrounded by monograms, on one of which is written in Latin Diluvium (“flood”), and on the other - H and X - “House of Ixcules” (Meiendorf traced its history from this ancient family).

Until 1904, there was a thorough work on the castle. In 1914, having left Russia, the Meiendorf couple never returned to their family nest.

A few kilometers north of Odintsovo is the village of Barvikha, where the “Castle of Baroness Meiendorf”, built in the style of knightly buildings of the Middle Ages, is sure to attract attention. Remarkable for its beauty is the magnificent regular park that stretches around it. Behind the castle is a large lake with a dam and a beautiful stone bridge.

The “Castle of Baroness Meiendorf” has a rich history, built in 1885-1887 under the leadership of Pyotr Samoilovich Boytsov for the daughter of General A. B. Kazakov, Nadezhda Aleksandrovna.

Soon, a baron appears in the life of Nadezhda Alexandrovna - a retired officer Bogdan Yegorovich Meiendorf. He was not rich, but he had a title. The wedding took place in 1904. Nadezhda Alexandrovna became a baroness, and her husband got the magnificent Barvikha castle. The Meiendorfs deduced their origin from the old Baltic baronial family of Ikskul, who received their surname from the castle of the same name, 25 km from Riga, on the banks of the Western Dvina. "Ikskul" is a Finnish word meaning village. During the conquest by the German knights, this "village" was the first to enter into relations with the Germans, who in 1187 founded a fortress here.

It is quite likely that the Barvikha castle in some way satisfied the baronial pride of its new owner. At the direction of Meiendorf, the castle is rebuilt and acquires a slightly different silhouette, a brick wall is built around it. The castle has a large collection of weapons, paintings, a wonderful library. In the lower large hall appears a magnificent large tapestry "The Great Flood". It was mounted on a coffered ceiling, the size of which is about 40 square meters. meters. There are several medallions around the tapestry, on one of which there is an inscription in Latin “Diluvium”, and on the other, in a beautiful ornament, two intersecting letters “H” and “X”, which means: “House of Ixcules”. A forest park with an area of up to 5 hectares was laid out around the castle. The owners lived in the castle only in the summer, and left it for the winter. In 1914, the Meiendorffs went abroad for treatment.

Soon the First World War broke out, and they remained abroad. After the October Revolution, they never returned to Barvikha. Valuable property remains in the castle. His protection was entrusted to the Komsomol members of the village of Odintsovo, headed by Stanislav Makovsky. A special armed team was created to carry out security.

In 1918 V. I. Lenin often visited Barvikha. According to the memoirs of his sister M. I. Ulyanova: “In order to get some fresh air on a free day, we ... made it a rule to leave the city for at least a few hours, taking sandwiches with us instead of lunch. They traveled in different directions, but soon the forest on the banks of the Moskva River, near Barvikha, became Vladimir Ilyich's favorite place. We chose a secluded place on a hill with a wide view of the river and the surrounding fields, and spent time there until the evening.

In the first years of Soviet power, a colony was created in the Barvikha castle for the children of the dead Red Army soldiers. Sleeping quarters, a dining room and workshops were equipped here. About 150 children were brought up in the children's colony. In March 1935, the sanatorium of the Council of Ministers of the USSR "Barvikha" was organized in the castle building, where M. A. Bulgakov, I. L. Andronnikov, D. D. Shostakovich, S. P. Korolev, I. V. Kurchatov, Luis Corvalan, Yuri Gagarin and others.

Since that time, Barvikha has become a vacation spot for the Soviet elite. The dacha of M.A. Bonch-Bruevich was located near the village, from 1938 to 1945 the writer A.N. Tolstoy lived in one of the state dachas.

The castle was extensively restored in 2003-2004. According to ancient engravings, the interiors were restored, portals and stairs were made, a unique tapestry on the theme of the Flood was assembled literally bit by bit. The castle consists of a main building and an outbuilding connected by an underground passage. The facades have completely retained their original appearance. Restoration work restored the former luxury: spiers, windows, white stone, gilding - everything is carefully preserved without alteration. Even the windows and drainpipes are recreated in the form in which they are depicted on old documents. Inside, there were serious changes related to the new functionality of the castle and modern technological requirements. Screen painting was used to decorate the walls: in each room - with its own special pattern. The walls of the corridors are covered with English silk, and the wooden elements of the walls and stairs are made of tinted pine.

Currently, the castle belongs to the Office of the President and is used not only for high-level political meetings, but also for private events.

There are a lot of interesting places in the suburbs. Some of them are known to everyone, others are in the shadows. Some are easy to get to, and some are inaccessible to mere mortals. A few years ago, few people heard of the Meiendorf castle, but many saw it while driving along the Podushkinskoye highway past the Barvikha state farm. Now the castle is surrounded by a high fence - because after a large-scale restoration it became the official residence of the President of Russia. Now the whole country periodically hears about it, but not everyone manages to see all its beauty.

This photo series was made by me in 2006, when the castle had already been restored, but did not yet have such a huge national significance as it does now. Surely something in the atmosphere of the castle has changed, but the general impression of the castle and its interior can be made from these photos.
