Novosibirsk State University(full name - Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education "Novosibirsk National Research State University") - the only classical university in Novosibirsk, one of the national research universities in Russia. The University is among the participants of Project 5-100 - a program to increase the international competitiveness of Russian universities among the world's leading scientific and educational centers.

When founded, it was called "Novosibirsk State University". In 2009, it received the status of a national research university. In 2011, by order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation dated May 27, 2011 No. 1837, the State Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education "Novosibirsk State University" was renamed the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education "Novosibirsk National Research State University". By order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation dated April 17, 2014 No. 331, in connection with the creation of the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education "Novosibirsk National Research State University", the name of the university was changed accordingly.

Novosibirsk State University was established by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of January 9, 1958, six months after the decision to establish the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On September 29, 1959, Academician S. L. Sobolev gave the first lecture to the students of the new university.

The University was built and developed together with the Novosibirsk Scientific Center, focusing on the training of highly qualified personnel for science and education.

• January 9 . The Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted a resolution on the organization of the Novosibirsk State University, which was considered as an integral part of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

• April 9th. Academician I. N. Vekua was appointed Rector of Novosibirsk State University (-).
• May 19 . The opening date of the Novosibirsk University with daytime and evening forms of education has been determined - September 1, 1959. At the only faculty of natural sciences, specialists will be trained in the following areas: mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, geophysical methods of prospecting and exploration of minerals.
• September 28th. University classes have begun. The first lecture for students of all specialties, the topic of which was the problems of mathematical science of that time, was read by Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences S. L. Sobolev. • August 6th. Postgraduate studies at NSU have been opened.

• July. The first admission of students to the biological department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences was held.

• January 23 . The country's first specialized physics and mathematics school at NSU (FMS) was opened. Admission of students to PMS was carried out by selecting the winners of the All-Siberian Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry Olympiads for schoolchildren.

• NSU graduates, mathematician Yu. L. Ershov and physicist A. A. Galeev, already a year after defending their diploma, successfully defended their dissertations for the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences.

• April 30 . The Komsomol organization and the NSU Interclub organized and held the first Mayovka.
