There are 315 dormitories in Moscow that belong to state universities. 470 thousand students live in them, who came to Moscow from all over Russia and from foreign countries. Despite such large numbers, more than 65,000 non-resident students cannot get a place in a hostel - there are simply not enough of them. Students complained to President Medvedev about this situation last fall during a meeting in Skolkovo. After that, the president held a meeting on the social status of students, at which he promised that new dormitories of various types would be built, all illegal residents who were not related to students would be evicted, and that the Internet in all dormitories would be free.

In the meantime, almost all out-of-town students are forced to pay quite a lot of money (500-700 rubles) for slow Internet, since many hostels have a monopoly on Internet access. As for illegal immigrants, the Moscow State Pedagogical University (Pedagogical University) is most famous for them.

“Students rarely get rooms in a hostel and only if you pay the commandant for them. In the hostel at VDNKh, the first three floors are rented out to migrant families. MEPhI dormitories, built about five years ago, are considered among the best in Moscow. Students actually live in their own apartments with a spacious kitchen, balcony, shower and toilet. Many students redecorate their own rooms because some of them are a deplorable sight - pieces of wallpaper hanging from the wall, leaking ceilings and windows that won't close.

MGIMO has four dormitory buildings, all of them are located in different places: on Profsoyuznaya, in Teply Stan, in Tsaritsyno and on Vernadsky Avenue, near the university itself. Smartly dressed students come out of the rooms, obviously not dressed for a scholarship. Students of the hostel for foreigners on Vernadsky Avenue do not receive a scholarship - almost all foreigners study at MGIMO on a contract basis and pay 4,500 rubles a month for a hostel.

Mostly foreign youth from China, Korea, Central Asia, and the CIS countries study at MGIMO. Citizens of Central and Western Europe also live in the MGIMO hostel, but mostly they are exchange students who came to Russia for one or two semesters.

Usually residents of different countries are accommodated in one room. So, the Azerbaijani Aziza, who gave me a tour of the hostel, used to live with an Albanian, then with a French woman, and now her neighbor is an Italian. Studying at MGIMO is not a cheap pleasure, and mostly well-to-do boys and girls live in the hostel at the university.

Boys are less likely to be moved to blocks because they tend to be less clean and don't clean up after themselves. The common showers and toilets are regularly cleaned by a technician. Kitchens for all residents are located on the floor, two on each.

Therefore, in our dormitory, three people live in almost all rooms that are designed for two. Probably, frequent fires can be associated with this fact, which most often occur in RUDN dormitories precisely through the fault of the residents themselves - many make a mess that does not contribute to the creation of safe conditions. Every few hours, the commandant or attendant passes through all the floors with a plunger - many students throw food directly into the sink, which constantly clogs it.

Hostel location- 10-15 minutes by bus from Yugo-Zapadnaya or Belyaevo metro stations.

Cons of a hostel- dirt, smells unusual for Europeans, conflicts between students from different countries who do not always get along with each other. It is also hard for those who study at complex faculties - physical, mathematical, medical. Humanities students have much easier studies, so they interfere with their hectic lifestyle for those who really need to study.

For many foreigners, admission to RUDN University is a ticket to life. And no matter how they scold the conditions of the hostel, Russians and life in Moscow, most dream of staying here, and not returning to their country. Almost all cafes, shops, beauty salons and other commercial establishments on campus are open and run by former students.

Here, at very low prices, you can taste dishes of Caucasian, Central Asian, Chinese, African cuisine, smoke a real oriental hookah, buy Indian spices, sew an individual pair of shoes to order from an Uzbek. In Moscow, students live in three buildings - on Aviamotornaya, Shosse Entuziastov and Studencheskaya. I visited a dormitory that used to belong to MPEI (Energy Institute), which HSE recently acquired into ownership. Conditions in the hostel on Aviamotornaya are many times worse than in distant Odintsovo. After passing the diploma, graduates bathe in the fountain in front of the university, and then ride on basins - first along the common stairs, then in the dormitory courtyard, tied to a car with a rope.

Cons of a hostel- facilities on the floor, the toilets are very dirty, there are not even full-fledged cabins in the showers. Not every hostel building has a canteen and a shop. However, many are waiting in line at the hostel, which is running out of places due to ever-increasing enrollment.

But the workers did their job so poorly that the meaning of all these costs was lost. For example, they did not even remove the old window sills, but installed new ones on top of them. But the entrance to the territory of the hostel for all residents is open around the clock (for guests - until 23:00, during the sessions, guests are not allowed). It is difficult to get a place, RUDN University guarantees the provision of a hostel to beneficiaries and foreigners, of whom, as you know, there are a lot of students at this university and those who study on a contract basis. State employees here are by no means in the forefront of candidates for a hostel.

Students joke that the main thing is not to enter, but to hold out until the fifth year. It is for this reason that the leadership of the Russian State University for the Humanities often gives hope to students who did not get a place in the hostel.
