What are the consequences of getting a deuce in one or more subjects? What rights do students with academic debt and their parents have? How to correct the situation, what can be demanded from the administration?
If a student received one or more twos in a year based on the results, then he has an academic debt, which he must eliminate.
Until the debt is cleared, the school administration must transfer the student to the next grade conditionally. Also, the school is obliged to provide conditions for correcting the assessment. The student must be given the opportunity to correct a grade twice.
To do this, the school administration sets a deadline for recertification. The first time the subject is handed over to the teacher, the second time a commission is created. Most often, the retake takes place at the beginning of the next academic year, but at the discretion of the teacher and the school, it can be scheduled for the summer. Retake dates can be determined in the relevant provision on the school website.
If the student could not correct the grade after two attempts, parents have the right to choose one of several options:
- Remain for a second year;
- Switch to training according to adapted programs, for example, to a correctional school in accordance with the recommendations of the psychological, medical and pedagogical commission, or go to an evening school;
- Switch to an individual form of education (i.e. remain on an individual form of education at your school, if such an opportunity is provided in it, or transfer to another school that has the appropriate provision).
A student with academic debt has the right to:
- pass the intermediate assessment twice (try to correct the grade) within the deadlines set by the school within one year;
- in case of illness, ask to reschedule the deadline for the delivery of academic debt;
- if there are doubts about the objectivity of grading, demand that teachers from another school be included in the commission that conducts intermediate certification.
If necessary, the student's parents can themselves initiate a retake by sending an appropriate application with a request to ensure the possibility of passing an interim assessment addressed to the director.
The school administration has no right to insist on the expulsion of a student from school due to poor academic performance. The school also does not have the right to raise the question of retention for the second year until the student has been given two attempts to correct the mark in each subject.

Getting a deuce in a year has especially serious consequences for students in the final grades - grades 4, 9 and 11.
Students in grades 9 and 11 in the presence of academic debt cannot be allowed to pass the OGE and the Unified State Examination.
There is a special clause in the Education Act stating that
“Students who have not mastered the basic educational program of primary general and (or) basic general education are not allowed to study at the next levels of general education.”
Accordingly, students in grades 4 and 9 cannot be conditionally promoted to the next grade. And in the case of getting a deuce in a year, they usually have only one option - to stay for the second year even before they can exercise the right to correct their grades.
