INFORMATION ABOUT PREPARATORY COURSES

MSLU has evening courses to prepare applicants for centralized testing in a foreign language, Russian and Belarusian languages, the history of Belarus (set in September and December).

MSLU them. Maurice Thorez is a world-famous university that has long become one of the symbols of Russia. The university implements education in many programs and areas, but the most fundamental and high-quality knowledge is acquired at the faculties of foreign languages ​​and translators.

Story

MSLU them. Maurice Thorez traces its history back to the formation of French language courses organized in 1906. By 1926, the courses were already a state institution with the name "Higher Courses of Foreign Languages", training was conducted at the Library of Foreign Literature. At that time, the flow of students was great - more than 1,000 translators for government organizations were educated annually.

The expansion of courses and their demand became objective reasons for the transformation of the educational structure into an institute, which happened in 1930. The new university included three language departments (German, French, English), where teaching was conducted in the translation and pedagogical areas of education.

In the 1930s, the faculty of distance learning and preparatory courses appeared at the institute. In 1935, the educational institution received the name of foreign languages ​​(MGPIYA). The full course of study of subjects was 4 years, teaching was carried out at the faculties of basic languages. Most of the groups were overloaded with students ranging in age from 20 to 40 years old.

In 1939, Moscow State Linguistic University (former Maurice Thorez Moscow State Pedagogical Institute) received its own building on Ostozhenka for permanent accommodation. In the same period, the first textbooks began to appear, research work began, the university received the right to defend candidate dissertations. The plans were big and full of fruitful work, but the war began.

War and post-war transformations

In the summer of 1941, with the outbreak of hostilities, more than 700 students and teachers went to the front as volunteers, the 5th Frunze division of the people's militia was created on the basis of the institute. Despite the hardships and significant restrictions, the educational process did not stop at the Maurice Thorez MSLU. The front needed qualified translators to work with prisoners of war, conduct reconnaissance and subversive work behind enemy lines, and organize propaganda activities. The answer to the request of the time was the foundation in 1948 of the faculty of referent translators.

Students and teachers of MSLU named after Maurice Thorez, with the victory in the Great Patriotic War, acted as interpreters at the processes of condemning Nazism in Nuremberg, and later in Tokyo. In 1946, on the basis of the Faculty of French, the Faculty of Romance Languages ​​was formed, where French, Spanish, and Italian were taught.

Since 1950, at the Moscow State Linguistic University. Maurice Thorez complete course of education is five years. At the end of the fifties, the Faculty of Translators introduces an innovation for students - the obligatory mastering of two foreign languages. A rich field for acquiring live communication skills and applying knowledge was the VI World Festival of Youth and Students, held in 1957 in Moscow. In 1964, the educational institution received the name of Maurice Thorez, and from that moment on, the name of the Institute of Foreign Languages ​​in Moscow became recognizable in the international arena. The university status was obtained in 1990, when global economic and political changes took place in the country. In the wake of changes, new areas of study were opened at the university - economics, political science, jurisprudence, cultural studies and many others. In 2000 MSLU them. Maurice Thorez acquires the status of a basic organization for the languages ​​and culture of the CIS countries.

Translation faculty

The faculty for the training of translators appeared during the war years and for more than 70 years of activity has produced more than 6 thousand specialists. The training program implements two directions:

The educational structure of the faculty includes 13 departments, where 23 languages ​​are studied. Admission

Any citizen of the Russian Federation can become a student of Moscow State Linguistic University. Maurice Thorez. The selection committee accepts documents of the appropriate sample, which indicate the results of the Unified State Examination, according to which the initial selection of candidates takes place. The next step is to pass exams, which are held in the form of tests.

Requirements for the knowledge of applicants are very high. According to the results of the past 2016, Maurice Torez MSLU has a passing score of 286 to 310 units. Those who purposefully prepare for admission by systematically attending classes at the pre-university training center are more likely to become a student.

According to the university data, about 80% of students at the department of pre-university education successfully passed the USE and entrance examinations to the university. The training program provides for attending classes several times a week, at least 6 academic hours are allocated for training in foreign languages.

Everyone can attend additional classes - express training courses that start immediately before the start of the admission campaign. Training is carried out on a commercial basis.

Language classes

In addition to training programs designed to prepare applicants, all interested persons are invited to study foreign languages, including English courses. MSLU Maurice Thorez attracts the best teachers of the university to work on the courses, many of them have author's programs designed for better mastering the subject.

In 2017, applications for foreign language courses will be accepted from August 21 to September 30. Teaching is conducted in the areas - English, Spanish, German, Italian and French. Before the start of classes, testing is carried out. The program includes several levels of mastering knowledge from zero to advanced. At the end, exams are held and a certificate is issued. The number of participants in one group does not exceed 12 people. Tuition for one semester (4.5 months) is 30 thousand rubles.

The university has the following faculties:

Choice of profession

I graduated from the most ordinary secondary school No. 2 in a small provincial town called Dobrush (Gomel region of Belarus). At school, I studied very well (although I never reached the gold medal), all subjects were given to me with ease. She attended all kinds of circles (optional classes in German and Russian, mathematics, history, an acting class), sections, participated in various subject Olympiads (took first places in school and regional Olympiads in German), competitions, visited a literary conference in St. Petersburg , wrote poems and stories, in general, was an activist. But the decisive factor in choosing my future profession was the love for the German language, which was one of the school subjects. Moreover, I was very lucky with the German teacher: she was young, smart, fair and knew the language perfectly. Naturally, I wanted to become as successful as she was. It was the ideal that I so wanted to achieve. But I did not even suspect that the road to the dream would be so thorny.

Failed attempt at university

My goal was one of the most prestigious universities in Belarus - Minsk State Linguistic University (MSLU).

The passing score for the specialty "teacher of the German language" was 170. Applicants had to pass a centralized testing (CT) in history and the Russian / Belarusian language, as well as an interview in the discipline "German". I prepared long and hard, spending days and nights reading the necessary literature. However, the test result did not entirely please me: in the Belarusian language the score was very high - 92 out of 100, but with history I was unlucky - only 49. not enough). Seeing my last name below the line of applicants, I realized that all my dreams were destroyed. That's when I really regretted that I did not attend paid preparatory courses. Now I understand that I was still a child, naive, looked at everything with rose-colored glasses. Then there were tears, panic, a sense of injustice, depression ...

Studying in college (RGPK)

At this difficult moment for me, my favorite German teacher came to the rescue. She offered to submit documents for admission to the "Rechitsa State Pedagogical College", where I can get not only a good knowledge base of a foreign language, but also become a qualified teacher. My condition after the failure at MSLU was so broken that I don’t even remember how I applied to college. And two weeks later I received a letter in which I was informed that I was now a student of the above college.


The next blow for me was that the education at the RSPK was very different from the school one: new subjects, high requirements, strict teachers, smarter classmates - all this lowered my self-esteem even more. School was very hard for me. I am an ambitious and purposeful person. Thanks to these traits, I soon not only caught up with my girlfriends, but also became one of the strongest students in the stream. So three years passed. I successfully passed the state exams and received a diploma of secondary special education.

I must say, I was very lucky: I was hired by my native school. And, most interestingly, in the place of the same teacher who was and remained my ideal (she also became the director and my immediate supervisor, which means that there is something to strive for!).

Through thorns to the university

But I didn't give up on my dream. In the same year (2008) I decided to try once again to conquer MSLU. And again, the CT, the interview ... I don’t remember exactly what the passing score was, because. entered on other conditions (after graduating from college) immediately to the second year. I coped with the testing successfully, scored the required number of points, the interview went well (although it could have been better), but the competition was, if I'm not mistaken, 4 people per place and I still failed to enter the budget. However, now I had a job, I could pay for my education on my own, so I entered on a paid basis. So I became a student of the German language faculty of distance learning at the Minsk State Linguistic University. The payment was relatively small - from $ 120 to $ 170 per semester (increased every subsequent year).


At the very first session, I met new classmates. Everyone was so different, but the thing that united us was that everyone had graduated from college and was already a German teacher. My goal was not only to get a diploma, but also to improve my knowledge, to be a worthy representative of my profession. Although in our group there were those who just wanted to get a diploma with a higher education. Others acted according to the principle "everyone runs, and I run." Nevertheless, I very quickly got used to the new team, they listened to my opinion, just as I respected the opinion of others.

Difficulties of studying at MSLU

The study was not easy. I already worked at school, was a class teacher, taught electives, i.e. was very busy. Therefore, there was practically no time left to prepare for the sessions. I confess, I performed tasks at the very last moment, and sometimes right at the railway station. After all, from my hometown to the capital about 600 km. There was a certain difficulty in this, because. I had no relatives, no acquaintances in Minsk, I had to rent an apartment for the duration of the sessions (and this pleasure is not cheap).

I really liked studying at the university, although the requirements were very high and, at times, seemed simply impossible. The university is prestigious and the teachers are solid. The teaching staff was, one might say, stellar, according to the books they wrote, in fact, they teach German in schools, colleges, and universities. I had the opportunity to communicate with these amazing people. But not everything was so smooth. Among the teachers there were also those who created conflict situations, could humiliate or call them offensive words. Sometimes I just wanted to get up and leave the audience, go home and never go back there. Anything happened, but there were much more positive moments and it helped not to give up.

my life today

This year (2012) I graduated from the university! My goal has been achieved and, to be honest, I'm proud of myself. I am proud that I did not break after the failure, that I withstood ... I could. When most recently I was awarded a diploma, I was overwhelmed with feelings, I cried with happiness. In fact, it is hard work, but the result is worth it.

By the way, while studying at MSLU, I got married and gave birth to two wonderful babies! She gave birth to her first child when she was in the 4th year, the second - in the 5th year. And when you have a family, studying becomes even more difficult. The first time I had to take exams a week before the birth, and the second one was even worse: I passed the first state exam two weeks before the birth, and the second one after (I had to leave a newborn 2-week-old baby at home and leave our small town for capital). That is why the last two courses were the most difficult for me. But now it's all over. I have a family, a job I love, which I will start again after maternity leave… and I was able to fulfill my dream!

For those who are just going to enter the university, I advise you to never give up. Do not set yourself impossible tasks, decide on the choice of your future profession, where you want to go and get ready. From my own experience, I was convinced that even the deepest knowledge of the school curriculum cannot guarantee you admission to the university. You need to engage in self-education, focus on those subjects that will be useful to you. And if you get bored and want to quit everything, remember that our future depends only on ourselves. Admission and entrance exams. When submitting documents, you should definitely ask what languages ​​this year will be given in the form of study you have chosen (bachelor's / specialist), because you will not choose it yourself, but you can only “indicate what you want”, and then the dean's office will decide your fate. The hairy-eyed women from the admission committee were very surprised at my request to announce the list for my year of admission and searched for it in the offices for about 15 minutes. You will learn about the decision only at the first meeting of the course after admission, and it should be borne in mind that it can be taken far from in your favor, so instead of the desired French, you will study Armenian with a light suggestion from the notorious dean’s office, or vice versa. In my memory, there were at least two cases when, after meeting the course, the girls did not get into the Spanish and French they were studying, but received completely different languages ​​​​as their first and second. I was a little more fortunate, as they gave me the “desired” language from the family of the one I wanted to study, but this opportunity was available only when entering the specialty. So the choice is still illusory, and the feeling of the impossibility of deciding the fate of your own academic career will still not let go if you are completely unlucky. The English entrance exam is not much more difficult than IELTS, TOEFL or another international exam, so if you have a certificate from any of them, then there will be no problems and the format will not come as a surprise.
The learning process, student life and teachers. My teachers in grammar, vocabulary and home reading of the first (English) language were girls who received diplomas of specialists in the year of my admission. There is no need to talk about the quality of their teaching skills. It was pointless to ask questions in pairs, everything was searched much faster in Google, or classmates came to each other's help, while the teachers hesitated and promised to give an answer by the next lesson. In principle, there was no home reading as such, because the teacher went on maternity leave after the first lesson, and only a few weeks later they found replacements in the form of a fourth-year student, who often could not attend due to her own schedule. Only the phonetics teacher turned out to be experienced, but after the first lesson, she ordered me to break the American accent acquired over the years of self-study, because only Queen’s English is quoted at the university, and it’s impossible to get to individual classes with the only “American” phonetician. Another nuisance was the Russian history course taught by Soghomonyan. Almost an activist of the NOD (and perhaps an activist, I won’t get into this jungle, but with his comrades-in-arms he definitely publishes a patriotic newspaper with a St. George ribbon in the entire front page), he poured leavened patriotic pus into the heads of my poor young classmates on streaming steam for a whole semester . It was impossible to listen to this: there Stalin, Putin, all the Tsars and Empresses merged into one superman, who had no inherent mistakes and defeats, only Great Russian Rightness, Victories and Orthodoxy. Enemies, intrigues, the decaying west. No logic, no emotion. Thank you, but I did not subscribe to the patriotism + program. Of the good, teachers of linguistics and Danish can be noted. And yes, physical education is a must to visit, and the volume of hours is quite large. A very unpleasant addition to an already poor learning experience. Student life as such does not exist, fans of KVN and other fan activism have to be content with the theater and the choir. You can participate in the international exchange program for no more than a semester, otherwise you will cause a paranoid tantrum in the dean's office about the recruitment of agents of foreign influence (seriously). Be prepared for the fact that civic passivity is encouraged in students, so your innovative proposals for improving the learning process and claims for the quality of education at any level will be met with threats and indignation. My good friend, who is now studying at the Faculty of Sociology, chose the problem of homophobia as the topic of her term paper, for which she fought until the official announcement of the change of the conservative scientific supervisor, who in every possible way prevented her from choosing. As a bonus, in one of the classes they were shown films about telegonia and the sinfulness of premarital sex. So if you want to keep your freedom of speech and self-expression, then be prepared to seriously fight for it, or choose a less conservative-patriotic educational institution. The encouragement of such behavior also affects the conservatism of the students themselves - most of them are rather negatively inclined towards everything new and different, and they take MSLU criticism to heart, although they themselves complain about its problems. By the way, there is no Slavic, except perhaps the Ukrainian language. Books are old and literally falling apart in hands, 70-80s. In some languages, teachers write textbooks themselves. And since MSLU often does not have international agreements with other countries that provide for the supply of up-to-date educational literature and dictionaries, you will use printed and bound library copies and dictionaries with outdated vocabulary. Such agreements also provide for the exchange of teachers, so if you are not lucky with the choice of language, then you will not wait for native teachers. This was the situation in 2014-15. with Danish, while Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University and even PetrSU signed similar agreements with Denmark.
infrastructure and administration. Getting a hostel is incredibly difficult, and in the first year it is completely impossible. The buildings are located as far as possible from each other and inconvenient. The main building is old, flawed and no one has been renovating it for a long time. Yes, indeed, holes in the floor instead of toilets. Elevators in the high Soviet annex, where the main array of classes takes place, have recently been allowed to be used exclusively by university employees. The auditoriums are tiny and stuffy, the Wi-Fi in the dining room was removed with the arrival of Kraeva (in my time it didn’t exist). I didn’t eat in that same canteen just once, because it was cheaper, tastier and more satisfying to buy a hot dog or a sub in the stalls nearby. I saw a cockroach, I was impressed and did not come back. Food in all three buildings is standard-municipal-school. The building on Babaevskaya is a nightmare that looks like an old, dirty clinic. It's dark and depressing, with crumbling Soviet furniture, long, gloomy corridors, and a smelly toilet. When it was last repaired - historical science is unknown. The Rostokinsky building stands out from the other two with more or less fresh renovations and a terrible location - a beautiful constructivist building stands in the center of a forest park, you can get from it only by tram from the Sokolniki or VDNH metro station (the trip will take 15-30 minutes, depending on traffic), and the only sign of life for a couple of kilometers around is a gas station. Yes, sometimes you had to rush out of it to the next couple straight to the Ostozhensk building, so be prepared to run and get nervous. Although teachers will not scold for being late, as they understand the situation perfectly. You will not be allowed into the university without a student card, there are no built-in or separate access cards, despite the presence of turnstiles in each building. None of the buildings are adapted for people with disabilities to the required extent. The loss of a student card, regardless of the circumstances of such a loss, will cost you three thousand rubles and international exchange / practice. Yes, you will not be allowed to go anywhere for losing a cardboard box with stamps. The administration has not changed even after my expulsion - even after the scandalous departure of Khaleeva, the same evil boors run the dean's office of the Faculty of Translation. At one time, they promised to expel me for piercing if they saw him again (no one else in the world cared about him), referring to the paragraph of the rules for students about “undesirability of wearable jewelry made by piercing”. They will intimidate and put pressure on you for any reason, even an illegitimate one, and in the event of exposure, they will deny everything and run with their tail between their legs. I STRONGLY recommend that you do not have a single conversation with the administrations and the dean's office without the voice recorder turned on. Later, this can save you in a difficult situation. Always rely on the help of your tutor or other friendly faculty/administrator in such matters and never give up. They are never allowed in shorts, so when I came with a huge backpack of literature to deduct in the hot month of May, I was given all 924587 guards at the entrance of the main building from the gate-turn. Calls to the rector's office and the dean's office did not give any result, the first ones already frankly sent me and simply did not pick up the phone. The woman from the dean's office went all the way downstairs to call my parents first and make sure they were aware of my decision (ha, I was far from 18 then), to which the surprised parents replied in surprise, “well, uh, yes?”, and then submitted to me through the railing at the turnstiles an application for deduction. She communicated with me exclusively through him and refused, on her own responsibility, to take me to the library, located right at the entrance, so that I handed over my incredible pile of books. However, I achieved my goal, and they nevertheless let me in, but I received my documents only a month later - and this was in an accelerated mode, according to the dean. To do this, I had to really FUCK them, and not stop running into everyone and running after everyone for several hours. According to friends and acquaintances from senior years, they deliberately delay the process of issuing documents so that the guys are taken into the army. Sometimes the delay in issuance reaches six months, regardless of gender.
Before entering MSLU, I would strongly advise you to think about all of the above. There are good translation faculties in other universities, not only in Moscow, so I would recommend taking a closer look at St. Petersburg and thinking about passing the Unified State Examination in Literature, since it is needed in St. Petersburg in almost all faculties related to philology. It was my old dream to enter MSLU as an interpreter, but in the end I was very disappointed, so don't overestimate your hopes either. It is generally not worth it to enter non-core specialties here, since the quality is appropriate. Information that is not related to my faculty and language is known to me thanks to friends who stayed there after my departure in 2015. The situation, they say, only stagnates or worsens. If you still intend to do it here, then be prepared for great hardships. And take into account recent incidents with the deprivation of several non-core specialties of accreditation, several shifts of acting. rector after the infamous Khaleeva and others.
