Energy of words: it is better not to say these phrases.

Everyone wants to decorate their speech with beautiful turns. But very often, because of the fashion for certain words and expressions, many people forget to look into the explanatory dictionary. And they look a little awkward. Especially when they say that someone has closed the gestalt for the seventh time in a week, or the boss dominates someone.

For those who are preparing for the main school exam

Correctly: impartial - impartial, fair

In an attempt to diversify the vocabulary, many begin to use book words. Admittedly, it's not always the case. This is what happened with the adjective "unpleasant", which is often (constantly) confused with the word "unpleasant". When someone speaks “unpleasantly” about someone, you should not immediately frown and rush to sort things out. In fact, this someone speaks objectively and without prejudice, even if this truth is not very pleasant.

Previously, there was even such a word "personality", which means interest or prejudice towards someone or something. We will not argue: the adjective "unpleasant" and "unpleasant" are similar, and it is quite possible that in a few years linguists will gather a meeting and unanimously decide that it is possible to change the meaning. But so far, in any case, it is correct to say impartial criticism (in the sense of “unbiased opinion”), but an event cannot be impartial.

Correctly: odious - unpleasant, nasty

“What an odious and charismatic actor / politician / businessman” - what a compliment. Especially if you are sure that “odious” comes from the word “odes”. No matter how! An actor, a politician and a businessman would certainly tense up if they knew that the word “odic” came from “ode”, but “odious” comes from the Latin word odiosus, which means “nasty”, “very unpleasant”. For a compliment, it seems not very good.

Correctly: ambitious - proud, arrogant

With "ambitious" about the same story as with "odious". Out of the best of intentions, they want to say something good about someone, but it doesn’t work out very well. If a person is "ambitious" - this does not mean that he is purposeful and decisive. Rather, he is arrogant, full of ambition, and ambition in the dictionary is heightened pride, vanity and pretensions. Therefore, if suddenly someone says “ambitious project”, “ambitious tasks”, he is unlikely to mean what he said. Although, of course, the goals and objectives are different.

Correctly: congenial - congenial

And let's deal with another confusing adjective. The great strategist Ostap Bender led everyone astray with his exclamation “Congenially”. Just like . Therefore, many are sure that congeniality is the highest degree of genius. But, alas, the prefix "kon-" does not even closely resemble the meaning of "super-" or the like. From Latin, the prefix con- (cum) is translated as “together”, and genius is “spirit”. It turns out that a congenial is a person close in spirit and way of thinking. And no outstanding abilities.

Correctly: nonsense - nonsense, absurdity

When something unusual happens, for example, a child graduated from Harvard at the age of six (why not) - one is drawn to shouting “nonsense!”. And not with a negative meaning, but with a very positive one. After all, this is something incredible, a real sensation. Yes, sensational, yes, incredible. But it has nothing to do with “nonsense”, since the word means “nonsense”, “absurdity”, “absurdity”. You can say the same about the child prodigy, of course, but hardly.

Correctly: to dominate - to be sufficient, to satisfy (obsolete)

“The boss dominates me, I have no strength!” I immediately want to sympathize, but only if you do not know the interpretation of this word. In all dictionaries, the word "sufficient" means "to be sufficient for someone / something" (satisfy yourself - do not depend on anything). But the verb has long been modernized and received a completely different interpretation - to crush, suppress, oppress, and so on. And so long ago (approximately at the end of the 19th century) that only linguists and those who are especially indifferent to the Russian language know what the catch is, and why “self-sufficient” is not “putting pressure on itself”.

Why did it happen? As the writer and linguist Lev Uspensky writes in the book “A Word about Words”: “For us, especially those who do not know the Old Slavic language, “prevail” sounds like “crush”, “pressure”, words of a completely different root. As a result of this purely superficial similarity, confusion has arisen. Now even very good connoisseurs of the Russian language now and then use (moreover, in print) the verb to dominate instead of the combination of words to exert pressure: Hitler's Germany dominated its allies. In this case, “suppresses” means already “presses”, “hangs”, “oppresses”, - anything, but not “is sufficient”.

Time is merciless, the Russian is subduing, and now the word "dominate" is marked as colloquial, for example, in Kuznetsov's explanatory dictionary.

Correctly: close the gestalt - analyze the situation and never return to it

It seems that the gestalt began to close about every day, and more than once. For example, when they simply talk about the end of some business, even an insignificant one. The main thing is to sum it all up with the fashionable phrase “close the gestalt”. “I have read all the volumes of Game of Thrones. And closed the gestalt. An incomplete gestalt is a concept from psychology. Therefore, when we talk about an unfinished gestalt, it means that we once did not fully understand something, for example, in relationships, and for a long time we mentally return to this. It interferes with life, worries. That is, it is still more serious than finishing some simple task like watching a series or reading a book.

Impartial

Sometimes this word is used in the meaning of unpleasant or bad. And the word has a completely different meaning - impartial, fair.

Odious

2

This word is simpler, it is used more often than the rest in the correct meaning. Some people think that it means famous or outrageous, but it is correct to say that it characterizes an unpleasant, nasty person.

Ambitious

3

But with this word in practice, curiosities most often happen. It is used, wanting to say about someone that he is purposeful, making big plans. And we are talking about a man proud and arrogant.

Congenial

4

Surely many consider this word a continuation of genius, or even more than brilliant. No matter how! The word congenial means closeness in spirit or ideological closeness, at worst, but not super-genius.

Dominate

5

Probably, it is assumed that we are talking about pressure: the boss, circumstances. No. The point is that to dominate means to satisfy, to be sufficient for something. But, alas, in modern language this verb has already taken root as a dominant, overwhelming. For example, the word "dominate" is mentioned in Kuznetsov's dictionary as colloquial.

close gestalt

6

In everyday life, it is often used in the sense of completing some work that has been started. In fact, we are talking about the fact that the phrase "close the gestalt" means that you need to "analyze the situation and not return to it again." It can be a relationship with a person, a problem that interferes with life, a disturbing situation.

Epaulette tattoos

Such tattoos perform the functions of an army epaulette and shoulder straps. They reflect what position a person occupies in a criminal environment, what merits he has and how he relates to his work.

As a rule, the most respected and skillful thieves who stand high on the hierarchical ladder adorn themselves with epaulette tattoos.

1. Several options for shoulder tattoos, made in the form of shoulder straps. They are worn by "negative" thieves who enjoy considerable prestige.

The abbreviation SS present on shoulder straps indicates that the thief is not a ruthless robber, but a criminal who "retained his conscience."

2. These are shoulder straps of the "Colonel". They prick in order to show a kind of bohemian owner who can afford to work only in those cases when he has such a desire.

3. Shoulder straps "White Guard". They should be interpreted as follows: "I don't want to work and I won't."

4. "Passed missiles." A ZUR is a zone of enhanced regime.

5. "I am a thief."

6. "Crush the communists, delashes, informers and bitches."

8. Thief in law.

9. "Fighter". Such a tattoo is pricked by “punishers” - prisoners who, by order of the “authority”, take punitive measures against the objectionable, that is, punish them through violent physical impact.

10. "Passed the disciplinary isolation ward at VTK."

Knee tattoos "deniers"

"Negatives" in the criminal world are usually called hardened criminals who have several convictions behind their backs. In their circle, they are unconditionally recognized by authorities and are very dangerous to others.

During the Soviet era, the "denials" were an unofficial opposition that was unfairly persecuted for its political beliefs. Many negative tattoos are politically motivated. For example, caricature images of famous political leaders of the past, such as Stalin and Lenin, are not uncommon. Many tattoos of this type include images of barbed wire, skulls, crosses, stars, etc.

Knee tattoos of "negatives" are applied to the kneecaps. All of them, in one way or another, protest against the existing government and refuse to follow the demands of society.

1. “God alone is my judge.”

2. "I am the chosen one of God on Earth."

3. The tattoo means that its owner is an anarchist.

4. The tattoo says that its owner is a thief in law.

5. Muslim tattoo. "I will submit only to Allah."

Ring tattoos

Ring tattoos in the criminal environment are considered classics. They are worn with pride and often serve as business cards.

Ring tattoos are usually applied without coercion, but there are exceptions. Tattoos, symbolizing the lowest, and therefore humiliating ranks, are forcibly pricked so that when moving from one place of deprivation of liberty to another, the convict cannot take a higher hierarchical position than he has already been assigned.

Tattoos inflicted by force are usually removed by the prisoners after their return to freedom, or they are supplemented with elements and turned into other, more innocent ones.

Ring tattoos are worn not only by men, but also by women, although much less often. Usually they are made by prisoners with great experience, while they are largely copied from the male versions.

Ring tattoos are applied to the phalanges of the fingers in the form of rings.

Ring tattoos

Their main varieties are listed below and their meanings are indicated:

1. "I was in places of deprivation of liberty." This tattoo is purely informative. Any person who has ever been in places of deprivation of liberty can inflict it on himself.

2. "Destroyed youth." Such a tattoo is applied to criminals who served time in prison in their youth.

3. "I served my term with a call." This suggests that the prisoner wearing this tattoo served in the correctional facility the entire term of imprisonment assigned to him, was not amnestied or released ahead of schedule. When communicating with such a person, one should behave carefully, talk using the minimum number of slang words, especially if there is no complete certainty in their meaning.

4. "We are on trial for murder or grievous bodily harm." People who wear such a tattoo are of two types. Some can be really brutal killers with whom you need to communicate with caution. Others could commit a crime in a state of passion, and in real life they can be distinguished by a quiet and peaceful character. In this case, the correct course of action is to demonstrate moderate friendliness and polite, but not too frilly manners.

5. "We are on trial for robbery." With people wearing this tattoo, you should be more careful, do not try to present yourself as a cool authority, but also do not let yourself be offended. It is best to communicate with convicts wearing such a pattern from a position of moderate strength. If you are attacked, fight back, but do not get into a fight yourself unless necessary.

6. "We are on trial for robbery." Usually people involved in robbery are somewhat cowardly. They readily attack a defenseless victim, but several people alone do not dare to attack a cut. You should communicate with them from a position of confident strength, but not defiantly. If your cellmate wears this tattoo, try not to gamble, tease or make fun of him. Remember, robbery criminals may be afraid of direct conflict, but they will always be ready to stab in the back.

7. "We are on trial for theft." This tattoo is worn by thieves and people who feel the need to create asocial groups, that is, gangs and other criminal groups. The best course of action when dealing with them is to politely decline the offers that come to you. Also, you should not be too frank, since all your words and actions in the future can be used against you.

8. "We are on trial for hooliganism." This tattoo can be applied not only on the fingers, but also on the earlobes. It can also be interpreted as "Prone to negative manifestations" or "Poorly amenable to re-education." Bullies mostly respect only one language - the language of power. When communicating with them, you should immediately dot all the i’s: you will do this, no, you don’t need this, but you will think about it.

9. "Denied", or "Denied". The owner of this picture has an extremely negative attitude towards the judicial-executive apparatus, and in particular towards the police officers. He also does not accept the idea of criminals who have decided to cooperate with the authorities or have taken the path of reform. It is known that in most cases the owner of such a tattoo occupies a high rank in the thieves' world. When communicating with "negatives", you should minimize conversations about law enforcement agencies, avoid conflicts and conversations on personal topics.

On December 11, 1879, the State Council of Russia adopted the Law "On the Main Provisions for the Transformation of the Prison System", which stated that each prisoner should be kept in a separate cell. A similar recommendation appeared in the 1955 United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.

10. "Man". This tattoo is applied to those convicts who want to show that they have nothing to do with thieves' affairs, prefer to stay away from all sorts of "showdowns", are deprived of a specific status among their own kind and do not want to acquire it. This is the most favorable mindset and character. You can communicate with such people more or less frankly, of course, with some caution.

11. "Rooster", or "blue". This pattern is worn by people of the lowest rank of all available in the underworld. Not only thieves, but also other criminals disdain to communicate with such prisoners. The status of "blue" is assigned to people who are weak-willed, convicted of attempting or committing rape, as well as convicts who were unable to pay off gambling debts. The tattoo "rooster" in the vast majority of cases is applied by force.

Communicating with such a happy prisoner will negatively affect your reputation. Even the slightest suspicion that you maintain friendly relations with the “blue” can instantly lower you to a similar status, and there will be no turning back. Therefore, knowing that your neighbor is a "rooster", try to communicate with him without contempt, but with a certain distance.

12. "Six". Such a tattoo in the underworld marks the "sixes" serving the "authorities". Thieves in law use them as errand boys. The "sixes" in prison should be treated with caution, as they often spy on the neighbors for their "master".

13. "Passage through the Crosses." This tattoo marks people who, while under investigation, spent time in a pre-trial detention center. Crown in this case means that the owner of the tattoo was a frequent violator of the regime of the pre-trial detention center, often conflicted with the prison administration and, possibly, is an "authority" in the criminal world.

14. "Four towers and ZK." The drawing testifies to his time in correctional facilities. This tattoo is common, mostly in people who have ever served a sentence in prison.

15. "Point". Instead of a dot, a rounded cross may be present in the tattoo. The drawing symbolizes the escapes that the prisoner made from correctional institutions. Each shoot corresponds to one dot or cross.

16. "Alone in the circle of friends." The owner of such a tattoo was convicted and served a sentence in prison.

17. "Memory of parents" or "I am a killer." The drawing symbolizes a long memory and longing for parents who died while the person was in prison. Another interpretation is also possible. Such a tattoo is applied to themselves by people who seek revenge on enemies from among the servants of the law. The cross-hatched hill below the cross indicates that this man did what he intended.

18. "In the footsteps of a beloved father." This tattoo is applied to themselves by convicts whose parents were also engaged in illegal activities.

19. "Tried for rape."

20. "House Thief". He says that the owner of this ring tattoo is a great specialist in breaking into apartments and thefts.

21. "Killer".

22. "Registered in the zone." Worn by criminals who have been repeatedly convicted and served time in prison several times.

23. "Gave promotion in the zone." This drawing suggests that the prisoner, already in prison, committed an unlawful act.

24. "I was in the covered." The tattoo is usually applied to the upper phalanx of the thumb. It testifies that the convict was serving a term of imprisonment in a special regime correctional labor colony.

25. "Passed through a special prison."

26. "Do not renounce the bag and the prison." This is an ordinary, very common tattoo, which has no special meaning.

Biographical tattoos

The nature of biographical tattoos can be threatening, aggressive, simply informative, sexual, etc. It happens that their main element is various images of crosses, churches and other religious symbols, but this does not mean that the meaning of the tattoo is really religious. On the contrary, these drawings may call for rebellion or revenge.

Biographical tattoos

Previously, fragments of churches in tattoos, such as domes, symbolically displayed the term of imprisonment to which a person was sentenced. Angels were revered as amulets, and cupids said that a person is looking for his love. Today, both domes and angels are drawn arbitrarily.

In many tattoos, there are elements such as skulls, and not only human ones, and bones. They seem to be saying that their owners should be bypassed.

Abbreviations

Often there are tattoos in the form of abbreviations or individual letters, they have an unusual semantic load, typical for correctional institutions.

When interpreting many of these tattoos, you may encounter obscene or slang words.

In some cases, abbreviation tattoos are applied to two or more people. Usually it is a symbol of fraternization. Each person is given one or more letters from the abbreviation, but in such a way that, when added, the original word can be read. For example, the letters “br” are applied to one convict on the back of the hand, and “at” to the other. If these people shake hands, the letters form the word "brother".

The meaning of many abbreviations is known only to a limited number of people. Moreover, the same abbreviation in different prisons or regions of the country can be interpreted differently. But still, most tattoo abbreviations are generally accepted abbreviations, which in the underworld have been assigned a completely unexpected meaning.

Abbreviation tattoos can be applied to any part of the body and contain phrases of any nature, such as threats, oaths, declarations of love, or some specific information. Lettering tattoos

Lettering tattoos come in two types: digital and text. The former can either be independent or be part of a more complex tattoo. The latter can also be either separate elements of the painting, or be part of complex tattoos, complementing and explaining them.

Tattoo texts are usually simple phrases, the meaning of which comes down to declarations of love, friendship and fidelity. A tattoo-inscription can be applied to the skin with spells or aphorisms. Often there are sentimental complaints and requests or prayers.

Most often, inscription tattoos are represented by phrases of the following content:

"Born for torment, I do not need happiness."

"If you do not know grief - love me!".

“Let them hate, as long as they are afraid.”

"Virginity is a luxury."

"Killing is not killing."

"Farewell and love me".

"The main in the zone is a thief in law."

"They are tired of walking under escort."

Often, criminals stick aphorism tattoos on their bodies, translating them into a foreign language to heighten the effect, often with errors. This fashion appeared during the Soviet era, when the prisoners protested against the Soviet ideology.

6 Extreme circumstances. Women's prisons

Once in prison, you need to be prepared for anything, even if you intend not to break the rules and laws in the hope that you will be released early for good behavior. Therefore, this chapter will consider some situations in which, perhaps even unwittingly, everyone is involved. These include protests and punitive measures against prisoners.

Protest actions (hunger strikes, more rarely - acts of mass suicide) are aimed at improving the conditions of imprisonment, defending their rights in prison. They can be both massive and single.

How to assert your rights

As mentioned earlier, prison guards believe that a satisfied prisoner is a mistake of nature, and therefore, it is necessary to do everything possible so that the convicted person is not happy in any case, otherwise the prison will turn for him not into a place of serving a sentence, but into a sanatorium , which strongly contradicts its main purpose.

Since the prison administration adheres to this rather tough position, there is nothing left for the prisoners but to try to force them to make some concessions by cunning or even with the help of a lawyer.

So, how can you improve your conditions in prison? The first advice that comes to mind is borrowed from the rich experience of trainers - behave like, be more persistent, and you will be treated to a tidbit. In this case, anything can be a tasty morsel: a walk, cigarettes, or just a small piece of white bread - a huge rarity in prison dungeons.

A. A. Amalrik, in his Notes of a Dissident, talks about the methods by which the jailers can get an extremely necessary item: “They fed better than in other prisons, but so that the prisoner was slightly hungry; in a stall, without the permission of the investigator, it was impossible to take more than half a kilogram of butter for a month, more than a kilogram of sugar, the same restrictions were for transfers. Because of the exacerbation of gastritis, I was tormented by black bread, and without bread I was hungry, but they refused to give me white bread, “half of humanity has gastritis”, fortunately half of humanity is not yet in prison. I decided to starve out the medical unit: at first I made an appointment once a week, then twice, and then every day - squeamish-faced doctors, old and young, looked at me with hatred, made an analysis of gastric juice - normal.

- How normal when I have stomach pains.

- Well, we changed your juice, or what?

- Of course, they changed it, - I was not at a loss and nevertheless crushed them, one fine morning they put a piece of white bread into the feeder. I put it on the shelf to eat with tea, and before tea to admire as a visible evidence of victory - but before breakfast, an excited foreman ran in and shouted: “Where is the bread ?!” - grabbed a piece: the medical unit gave me bread, but the operational unit looked through the list and realized - I led the “wrong line” during the investigation in order to receive white bread.

There are situations when even victory turns into disappointment. Therefore, one of the basic rules of the prisoner: if there is food, do not put it away in reserve, but eat it right away to avoid incidents.

Protest actions

In Russian prisons, as well as around the world, prisoners often hold protests. About 52% of the population have heard or know about them, the remaining 48% heard about them for the first time during the survey, which made it possible to derive these figures.

Most of the people who learned about the riots among the prisoners, to one degree or another, sympathized with the protesters, resented the prison system, which forces prisoners to take such measures. And only a few were outraged by their behavior. The following question was also heard: “What rights can they demand if they themselves are criminals?”

When people were asked what, in their opinion, provoked prisoners to protest, most of the respondents answered that the riot is nothing more than a protest against the current conditions of detention of convicts in prison and an attempt to force the administration to improve them. There is also an opinion that prisoners usually protest against the arbitrariness of the prison administration and seek justice and respect for their rights.

The hunger strike is the simplest, most economical and demonstrative method of bloodless protest, which has been adopted by prisoners in many prisons. Refusal of food is a forced measure, with the help of which prisoners seek the attention of the media and the administration, demanding certain concessions.

Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that, if in many countries of Europe and America, where convicts are kept in very good conditions, the hunger strike fully justifies its intended purpose, then in Russia, and even more so in less developed countries, this does not always happen.

Andrey Kudin colorfully speaks about this in his work “How to Survive in Prison”: “Not a day passed without someone trying to go on a hunger strike in protest against the arbitrariness of the authorities, naively believing that in Ukraine you can surprise someone with a hunger strike . Innocent, gullible beings! In this country, no one pays attention to the explosions of nuclear reactors near the capital, and then a hunger strike of some prisoner ... So what? Let yourself starve, if you want. Moreover, to be interested in a starving person, what he, in fact, lacks for complete happiness, is at least futile. Usually what is missing is what no one is going to give. For example, release from custody or give a box of TNT for a birthday, so that there is something to blow up the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

From time to time, radical elements appeared on the prison horizon, which were not exchanged for long-term hunger strikes, but persistently cut veins with improvised means.

It is quite obvious that many prisoners who have staged a protest action do not really believe in its success, but simply go for it out of desperation, without losing hope to the last. Unfortunately, very often their expectations are in vain. When it comes to the needs of prisoners or some kind of gratuitous financial injections, the government of any country becomes deaf and blind, unless, of course, it is under the close supervision of the media. Only if the prisoners' hunger strike has attracted public attention can it be successful. Otherwise, the records of the hunger strike, which does not appear anywhere, will forever remain buried in the safe of the head of the correctional facility, where the unfortunate incident took place.

In order to attract the attention of the media, mass suicide actions are organized, because such an incident is much more difficult to silence. However, organizing it is much more difficult.

But not only in Russia, riots of prisoners are organized. Most recently, a large-scale action was held in Turkey to evacuate convicts who went on an indefinite hunger strike. During the violent termination of the protest, according to Minister of Justice Hikmet Sami Türk, 57 soldiers and prisoners were injured, 2 soldiers and 15 prisoners were killed.

The hunger strike lasted 60 days. It was carried out by especially dangerous criminal and political prisoners who did not want to be transferred to new high-security prisons with solitary isolated cells. The fact is that it was supposed to transfer the leaders of criminal gangs, who often organized riots among prisoners, accompanied by bloodshed. Naturally, they were dissatisfied with this turn of events, despite the fact that the new prisons, according to the organizers of the "moving", fully comply with European standards.

To end the hunger strike, the Turkish authorities had to use force. In some situations where prisoners actively resisted police forces, tear gas was also used.

A lot of noise was also raised by the prisoners of Tbilisi prisons, who, in an attempt to make a mass escape, raised a riot. The escape was thwarted. The entire operation, carried out by the police, lasted several hours. As a result, several firearms were confiscated from the prisoners. Many prisoners and special forces officers were wounded, some died.

According to the head of the Ministry of Justice, "Tilisi escaped the real threat of a mass escape of prisoners." Minister Gia Kavtaradze stressed that "everything that happened is a well-organized provocation, but this will not stop us from carrying out the reform of the penitentiary system - we will bring it to the end."

Punitive measures

Prison inmates must strictly follow the rules set for them by the administration. If this does not happen, the guards have the right to apply various punitive measures to them, ranging from a punishment cell to forced labor. Of course, there is room for abuse here too, especially when it comes to persistent offenders.

So, Ahmed Othmani described his experience, which, of course, he received not in a Russian prison, but abroad. Nevertheless, the text written by him is very valuable precisely from the point of view of reliability. It cannot be fully associated with the prison order prevailing in Russia, but it can be taken into account, because it most reliably reflects the attitude of guards towards prisoners, as well as many Russian inhabitants.

In her article, Othmani highlights the groundless brutality of law enforcement officers: “I was taken to the Ministry of the Interior, and there they drove through the police line, who spat at me, beat me and pulled my mustache. They poured out their anger on me because they had to spend too much time searching. They brought wine, began to dance around me and mock me in every possible way. I fell into the hands of a real master of torture, there were legends about him among the arrested - he liked to tear out pieces of skin with tongs and generally used the most sophisticated torture techniques. In 1973, I was tortured much longer than in 1968, though intermittently. I was very weak after several hunger strikes, so they left me alone for a while, giving me the opportunity to recuperate. I was locked in a cell, with my hands and feet shackled. And then they were accepted again. Among other things, they burned my skin with ether and left the wound open so that it festered.

“Any statement found to have been made under torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment shall not be admitted as evidence against a person to whom any prosecution is concerned, or against any other person having attitude to prosecution” (Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Article 12).

Of course, in Russia, such mockery of convicts in prisons is unlikely to take place, although it is impossible to say this with a 100% guarantee. However, compared to prisons in third world countries, especially African and Muslim ones, in Russian institutions where they serve their sentences, prisoners are considered more than humane.

Torture left a horrific mark on both the body and mind of Otmani, but later he himself admitted that he had learned from this sad experience "awareness of the complexity of human nature." He wrote: “The police guarded me around the clock. Once one of them, when his shift was over and he was about to leave, wept because he saw one of the executioners urinate on me - in impotent rage, furious that I was silent all the time. Some behaved like SS men, while others felt shame and indignation, seeing how they tortured me.

However, such an outcome is rare, because not everyone can withstand punitive measures, even much milder ones. The result of ill-treatment may be thoughts of suicide that have appeared in the head of the prisoner.

suicide

Suicide in prison is not uncommon; no matter how the guards try to fight them, the prisoners still find a way to commit suicide. A noose and sharpening are the most typical tools of a convict who intends to elude justice in such an original way.

In Russia at the end of the 19th century, production workshops were attached to prisons and extensive libraries were created. Prisoners were also taught to read and write. Penitentiary science has developed at a tremendous speed. Printed publications devoted to the problems of correctional institutions, such as the Prison Bulletin, published at that time, were very popular.

It is noteworthy that not all prisoners find such a way out of the situation the best. According to Andrei Kudin, the author of How to Survive in Prison, all convicts are divided into two groups. “A characteristic feature of colleagues in misfortune was a dull indifference both to their future fate and to their own health. Some of the prisoners long ago ceased to take care of themselves (and why?), living, while they live, the life of primitive animals (to eat what they give, to rectify natural needs, and the rest of the time to lie on the bunk, sticking a motionless look at the ceiling). Other prisoners, on the contrary, showed remarkable activity, rushing like crazy from corner to corner, spreading their fingers like a fan, and snot bubbles. Apparently, they had not yet run into freedom, the flames of pioneer fires continued to burn in their asses. They liked to pose as prison authorities and from time to time utter thoughtful phrases like: “Our house is a prison” or “There is nothing to do in freedom”. Those around him agreed like parrots, nodding their heads to the beat. At the same time, most of the prisoners understood perfectly well that there was nothing to do just in prison. They fussed, nervously bit their nails and were always in a hurry somewhere. We tried to do the best, but it turned out as usual - getting worse and worse ... ".

Idleness in the prison smoothly flows into boredom, then into melancholy and despair, which can lead to the fact that the prisoner will begin to think, and then try to commit suicide.

Most often, prisoners cut their veins, and after that, as a rule, they do not die, but continue to eke out an existence in prison. Many, having decided to take the last step, subconsciously continue to hope that they will be saved, which, as a rule, happens. Successful suicide attempts are not as common as it might seem at first glance.

“Many, having gone free, take their prison with them into the fresh air, hide it in their hearts like a secret shame, and in the end, like an unfortunate poisoned creature, crawl into some hole and die. What a pity that they are forced to do this, and what an injustice - a monstrous injustice - on the part of the Society that forces them to this! (Oscar Wilde).

Women's prisons

As a rule, when it comes to prison, most often refers to the men's prison. It is about them, basically, was written in this book. However, we should not forget about another scourge of Russian penal policy - prisons where women are held.

The atmosphere prevailing in women's correctional institutions is even more oppressive than in men's. An excerpt from Ilma's work “My fandango” can be cited as an illustration of this: “In the women's prison they live in “families”. Within the family, everyone shares transmissions and supports each other. The family is determined not by the article, but by the social status at will.

You can't survive here without a family. All the stupid films and novels about women's prison and how "one man in the field" are just bullshit.

There are no laws and authorities in the women's pre-trial detention center. There are no concepts. There is chaos going on here. Here they cut, beat and put on ruffs - with or without reason, 90% of those sitting in a pre-trial detention center are murderers - domestic workers (affect, intoxication, serious bodily deaths, etc.). The remaining ten percent are imprisoned for robbery and a hooligan.”

It is not true that women are more peaceful than men.

More precisely, this is not always true. Given the contingent of those serving time in women's prisons, it is not surprising that violence, including sexual violence, flourishes there.

If you're unfortunate enough to be placed in a women's prison, be extremely careful. When you first get into the cell, do not fuss, calmly look around, choose a free bed for yourself and take it. Then wait - someone will definitely come to get acquainted. As a rule, this is done by the eldest. When talking to her, be concise and polite, but avoid using too intelligent phrases or words - they will not understand it. In her book, Ilma describes such a situation in the most preferable way: “A beautiful thick woman of about thirty comes up to me “What is your name?”.

I answer her. I take out cigarettes and hold them out. Her name is Alfie. She is a beautiful Tatar and speaks in such a way that I calm down. Then she leaves."

Newcomers in the cell in any circumstances arouse interest among prisoners. And here the main thing is that it does not turn into a specific one: “Another time passes before another woman comes up to me - she has a flat face, a wide bone. She is short and very strong. The cellmates call her Motka.

“What a beautiful girl we have appeared ...” - That's it. Began. I know that she will be until ... until she makes a mess. I must avoid it.

“Well, cho, girl, how are we so sweet?” - Behind her back is a thin girl with a sharp nose and the face of a mouse.

Motka comes closer. I clutch the kettle in my pocket. I do not know what to do. Too little time has passed - no one will be cut for me. I don't have a "family."

Her friends will really not stand up for the new prisoner, because she simply does not have them, so there are only two options for the further development of events: to give up and turn into a servant or sex slave for the rest of the term, or to show worthy resistance, but after that spend some time in infirmary. However, you can try to get out of the predicament with the help of a simple diplomatic policy:

“I take out cigarettes. Lot. I hand it to her (go away!). She is taking. Turns around, ready to leave. I sigh. I clenched the boiler so tightly that I can hardly open my hand in my pocket.

She suddenly stops and walks back.

“Why so little? Are you sorry? Are we sorry? You greedy bitch.” She yanks me off the bunk and jerks me up by my sweater to my feet. Damn strong."

If the attempt at reconciliation fails, the fists again become the main arguments. “I look into her eyes – I don’t wait. I throw my head back and slam my forehead into her nose. Blood. Immediately and a lot. Get it, creature!

“That bitch broke my nose!!!” - and then, as if on cue, her "families" rush at me. Man fifteen. I lose my balance and fall. Alfiya shouts something, and right there I don’t see, but rather feel that someone is pulling the “mouse” away from me, which has grabbed my hair. The door opens. Convoys are running. But right now, there is silence. I rise from the floor. I was lucky, someone “harnessed” for me. I don't know who."

“Behind bars, a person has no friends. You should only mind your own business. And never, never look straight in the eye.” (Stephen Oberfest, martial arts coach who teaches people how to survive in prison)

What is it that makes men's and women's prisons related? There are many answers, but the most important, of course, is one - no one likes informers. Complaining about being beaten means either signing your own death warrant or becoming a despised "rat". The main character of the work “My fandango” did not make such a mistake: “The doctor of the detention center asks me how it happened. I answer - fell. She nods. She hears it almost every day. As long as I haven't invested anyone, I have a chance to survive. The snitch doesn't have a chance."

This story is about words. About the power of words to choose. And sometimes it's hard to choose. But there are some words that a person does not need to say.

There lived a family. Husband, wife and child.

And the husband was silent. Here is such a hard-working silent man. There are such closed people who almost never complain about anything in their lives and talk about themselves too little.

And when you ask them:

How are you?

How are you?

Are you fine?

So often they answer that they say everything is in order, and life goes on as usual, and they seem to be coping.

A story about the power of words

But his wife thought otherwise. It was bad for the wife that her husband was so uncommunicative. That's what brought home money and supported the family - that's good. That he let go to the resorts well, that he took the child to the section, walked with him sometimes - also good

But that he didn’t talk to her about her feelings, didn’t discuss various philosophical, cultural currents - this is bad. And she considered it inattentive to herself. I even tried to fix it - I took him to exhibitions, to theaters, put books on his bedside table.

And he: he goes to the exhibition - and is silent, he goes to the theater - he shrug his shoulders. And he simply pushes the book away - he was very tired. He worked as a builder. He managed to build many different complex buildings and structures during his life.

And she wanted romance - flowers, words of love, adventure. But with regard to her husband, everything somehow turned out differently than she imagined. Here she will tell about flowers - he will buy. And to reproaches about dislike - he will answer that this is not so, he loves with all his heart. She loves both her and the child.

But it was somehow boring and usual for her. She even felt that he was doing it and saying it from under the stick. That's not of their own free will, but whatever it is from under her stick. And I felt at the same time, maybe not even very well. Felt miserable. Even angry.

But she didn't want to get divorced. Yes, and what to get divorced when there is such prosperity in the family. When you can go to the resort, again, to the theater, to the museum, to which salon to go, and send your son to different sections, hire tutors, dress up ... Well, you can do a lot. But it's boring.

And the wife was carried away by one journalist. It was a young man. He was so emotional, so sociable, so versatile. And in the magazine - it worked just like that. In fact, he wrote a novel. About love.

And they began to meet secretly. And there were so many words in her life! Words about love and words about feelings. Well, in addition to words, there were warm hugs, and again words - hopes, promises. True, the young writer often disappeared from the life of this woman for three or four days, or even for a week. Not immediately, of course, Well, and probably busy with business trips.

Although the woman was jealous, she did not leave anyone, neither her husband nor the writer. And how you leave your husband when she meets on his money. And how can you leave the writer, because her life has just now been filled with so many experiences that it has become simply no time to think about something.

And maybe, from an excess of these experiences, one day the lady could not restrain herself. In the heat of a quarrel with her husband, started as usual because of some everyday trifle, she accused her husband of not being in the absence of attention and love for her. She shouted to him about something else: that he was interfering with her life. It's hard for her to breathe next to him. That he is a stone around his neck and so on ....

And the husband, as always, remained silent. Only two days later, when I was with an inspection at one of my construction sites, I accidentally put my foot somewhere there, and fell down. Didn't save. Here is a set of circumstances.

After the death of her husband, the lady left her journalist. She was not up to novels. Got a job. She began to support her family, solve household issues, questions of her son's education, his rest.

For everyone, this story, as always, will be about their own. After all, any reader is a kind of co-author, or even just an author. Yes, and every person is a work of art. In childhood, parents begin to write this work, then a person writes himself. This is how you learn to be responsible for what you read, write, do, say. But that is another story.

This story is about words. About the power of words to choose. And sometimes it's hard to choose. But there are some words that a person does not need to say. You can also get away from a person next to whom it is difficult for you to breathe, next to whom you do not feel life. Break up with him eventually. It's not serfdom!

You have to say "disappointed". Offended is “lowered”, and there is no one worse than “lowered” in the zone

HEAR!

“Hear” is consonant with “from skis”. And “on skis” in the zone are those who - Only “hear”. “Hear” is consonant with “from skis”. And “on skis” in the zone are those who turn to the administration for help in finding a safe place.

got lost

It's better to say "lost". Fornication - it is clear who.

- Where is my seat

- Entering the cell, you can’t say that, otherwise they will immediately indicate “a place at the bucket”. In addition, when there is a conflict, they say “Know your place!”, which is practically an insult. Therefore, one should ask "Where shall I fall?"

- Witness.

- Witnesses come to court, go through the investigation. And there are no witnesses in the zone, all the convicts are here. Therefore, it should be said "eyewitness".

- Let's go and ask - it's not worth saying that either.

It’s better to say: “Let’s go, we’ll take an interest.” “Ask” means to make claims for a “jamb”, that is, for a misconduct.

- Thanks.– is also not customary to say. There is even a saying "For "thank you" they beat beautifully." You need to say “thank you” or “thank you”, or just nod and say “from the bottom of your heart!”.

- I'll prove it.

- it should be said “justified”, since they prove it exclusively in court.

- How is your health

- more correctly: "As myself." In response to the question “how is your health”, they can very severely object “What do you care about my health”.

- Goodbye.

These words are also taboo. No dates. Ignorance of these rules can lead to provocation. For example, a newcomer flippantly promises to "ask" someone. The answer immediately follows: "Ask me. Come on, show me!". Or worse, the newbie says "I'm offended!". And then the answer follows: "So you are offended." "No no!" - the newcomer says frightened, and hears: “Prove it!”. So two provocative situations are ready, which began quite harmlessly. After all, "for the market", as you know, should be answered.
