Making vocabulary cards with Quizlet

To create cards, we will use the Quizlet service. Its main function is to learn words from cards, but with its help you can make not only electronic, but also paper cards with words and pictures.

Step 1: Create a set of words

After registration, click on "Create".

Words can be added in two ways:

  • For one card: in the fields "Term" and "Definition" enter the English and Russian word (or vice versa), specify the language.
  • List: click on the button “Import from Word, Excel, Google Docs, etc.” - a window will appear in which you need to copy the words in the “word-definition” format. This function is very handy when there is already a list of words in the file.

Step 2: Add Pictures

If you want the cards to be not only with words, but also with pictures, add them during the creation of the set. Pictures can be added only from among those offered - the program itself looks for suitable images. The paid version allows you to add your own pictures, but this is unlikely to be necessary - the image database is quite large.

You may not find a suitable illustration for special terms, but they are unlikely to be needed if you are making flashcards for, say, second grade. Note that the picture will appear in the "Definition" field, not "Term". In other words, the definition can be not only the translation of a word, but also a picture or a translation + a picture.

Step 3: Print and cut out the cards

After saving the set, click on "Print" (where this button is hidden, see the picture below) and select the desired print format. Large cards on A4 sheet are best suited (you need to choose the “large” format). Click "Save PDF" and print the file.

After printing the cards, cut them out and glue them together. It is advisable to stick cards on cardboard. That's all, the training materials are ready!

Ready-made cards with English words and pictures for children

Conveniently, in Quizlet, you can not only create sets of cards, but also use other people's. For example, if you need cards on popular topics such as “Food”, “Animals”, “House”, etc., you can easily find ready-made sets through the search.

How to add transcription to word cards

There is a fly in the ointment in this barrel of honey: unfortunately, it is quite difficult to add transcription when creating cards on Quizlet. Transcription is generally difficult to type on a computer, because these characters are not on the keyboard. I suggest this way.

Cards with English words help in a short time to gain the necessary vocabulary or phrase stock. You can take ordinary pieces of paper or stickers, but they quickly wrinkle and wear out, so it’s better to buy special thin cardboard or thick paper from stationery. On one side of the card, write down the word or phrase in English, on the other side, the transcription and Russian translation. learn to greet in english

Another source is books. Here important words occur even more often. Listen carefully to the radio or read a book. When you hear an incomprehensible word or expression, write it out, translate it and add it to a new transcription card for even faster learning of English.

If it’s a completely dark forest with video, audio or books, then take the most commonly used topics in the dictionary or stupid words from the textbook. During the study, I found out for myself that the key to the language is verbs, and only then articles and prepositions (of course, after studying popular nouns). Therefore, I put special emphasis on cards with all persons, tenses and verb conjugations.

English flashcards are the best option for beginners. Due to their extreme compactness, you can learn new words wherever you like in small breaks of 10-15 minutes. And thanks to the special technique of breaks, the result will be very effective. See also How to learn English with pictures.

Hello again!

Do you know that the most effective way to learn words is to use English flashcards for kids? Where to get them for free - or buy, if necessary - how to work with them and why they are so useful - about this in today's article.

Word cards are one of the most effective ways to learn. In general, the essence is simple: these are small paper or cardboard squares, where on one side a word is written in English, and on the back - a translation of the word into Russian. This method, as I said, is suitable for any age: from a 2nd grade student to a university student or a translator who decided to replenish his vocabulary.

Attracting children with just a piece of paper is a sad task. And kids need something more fun. Therefore, I have several options on how to make this process interesting for both the baby and even for you.

  • Break into topics.

To make it easier for the baby to remember, break the words into topics. Fruits and berries, clothes and colors, animals and seasons - divide the words into groups and it will be easier for you. Firstly, you will already distribute the study of English into stages. And secondly, it will be more convenient for the child to memorize a group of related words than to make unnecessary associations.

  • Cut, draw and color.

You can download for free already prepared. And then the fun begins. They also need to be cut out, laid out, painted, or just something useful to draw on them. Do it together. Say them as you cut. Speak them as you draw the meaning of the word on them.

  • Play Bingo.

The game is very simple. You give your "child" some cards. For small children, it is better to give 3-4 pieces, and for older children - at least 9. So, the conditions of the game are as follows: you name the word, and your child crosses it out in his picture. So, when he crosses out the last word, he should stand up and shout "Bingo". This game option is great if there are several children. If you have one child, then you can play with the whole family. Or the kid himself at the end of the game can get up and start performing some kind of dance as a sign of victory.

  • Play True or False.

Another fun word memorization option is the True or False game. Raise the card up and ask the baby: “Is it a cat? - It's a cat?". If yes, he should answer in English “Yes, it’s a cat”, and then stand up and clap his hands. If the answer is no, then he should say “No, it’s not a cat. It’s a dog”, and then stand up and stomp your feet.

How to do?

Okay, but the question still arises: where can I get such cards or how to make them? First, you can easily make them yourself. I have a site where you can see the words you need to start. There is also given both translation and voice acting with transcription. You can download them for free. The next step is to print and cut. And op… your words are ready. Then just play and remember.

Where to buy and what to choose?

If you are a little lazy to do all this - download, print, draw, etc. - you can buy them. Cards from the Ozone online store have taken their place in my heart.

These are ready-made squares printed in the printing house. Very good quality and everything else. You can choose your own set.

These may be the first necessary words to, so to speak, start the engine of English. These cards are the favorites of buyers (you can click on pictures to see their detailed description and price):

My first English words (333 cards)

Educational cards + poster (50 cards)

Educational cards "English for kids" (36 cards)

Educational flashcards are also a good option. according to the method of Doman. They are good because the pictures on them are realistic, and the child can more easily associate words and objects around. This is how they look like:

For those who are older, these may be the most common adjectives, nouns or verbs:

500 adjectives

500 nouns

500 verbs

This option is convenient because you do not need to spend a lot of time, and you immediately get a large amount of vocabulary, which remains only to learn and learn. And the bright and beautiful cards themselves will not leave the child indifferent. Yes, and they will last a long time, because they are printed not on plain paper, but on special cardboard.

Well, my good ones, that's all for me. I am sure that you and your little ones will have fun and interesting time doing this method. Write in the comments how your classes are going and whether the cards help you. And in order not to miss anything important - subscribe to my blog newsletter. I promise you will love it.

See you again, my dears.

If you are a supporter of the early teaching of English to your children, then you are probably wondering how to do it right so as not to harm your tender, so vulnerable and dearly loved creature. Somewhere intuitively you feel that visual material, in order for your child not to fall asleep at the very first lesson, should not look like an ordinary textbook. Probably, you have already heard about some English cards, with the help of which your neighbors, acquaintances, colleagues at work taught the language to their children?

How is the memorization of words on the cards

Flashcards with words in English for children

Once Glenn Doman, the famous American doctor and writer, discovered that if the word is written on a piece of cardboard and shown to the baby for one second, then he will remember it. Thus, using the unique capabilities of the child's brain, he quickly taught young children to read, and after a while they could already read not only words, but whole sentences and even books. And as the first visual material for very little kids, he made picture cards, where there were images of the most recognizable objects by children, along with inscriptions.

Learning English with the help of cards is built in the same way. You show your child with a picture and say clearly what is shown on it: a cat, a bird, a ball, an apple, a car. The pictures should be what surrounds the baby and is clear to him. Ask him to repeat these words after you and during the day you return to the passed cards twice more. The next day, add a few more new ones and also practice them three times, and do not forget to repeat the already learned words three times.

What do English cards look like?

Now about how modern cards for children look like. There are two types:

  • and the picture and title are on the same side (the word is usually on the bottom)
  • picture on one, title on the other.

Words are usually written in two languages so that the child can make a two-way translation.
Today there are a lot of sets of cards on different topics: the alphabet, numbers, animals, plants, toys, cars, people and much more.

When buying a card, make sure that it is made exactly like a “bit of intelligence” card: it should contain only one bit of information and nothing more. It means -

  • the image should be clear and understandable: children should not think that in front of them is a turkey or a pig;
  • no external backgrounds: for example, a chicken posing against the backdrop of a picturesque courtyard filled with bird lads;
  • singularity of the object: if the word “chicken” is written, then it should be only a chicken, and not a touching family photo, such as “chicken and chicken”

Why is it easier to memorize words on cards

It seems to be so simple: we show one or two seconds, pronounce the word clearly and clearly, be sure to give the baby a hand to hold, smell and even chew. (No, perhaps we won’t give a chew, as our cards will quickly become unusable). And it’s easier to just memorize using cards, because memorization goes with the help of almost all of our senses. Well, of course, the main thing here is sight and hearing. But even the fact that these cards are so pleasant to the touch, brand new, they even smell of novelty, they can be taken, sorted out and examined, and, most importantly, they are yours! - all this is very, very important for children.

Try to use not only the external vision of the baby, but also the internal one. When memorizing an object, be sure to ask the child to imagine it first in the imagination. Of course, he still doesn’t understand what imagination is, so ask the baby before he looks for a card, for example: “Come on, do you remember that dog, we met her yesterday? Let's find her." Memorization occurs due to the associations that are stored in the child's imagination.

Prerequisites for learning

It is probably unnecessary to say that without memorization and repetition it is difficult to learn English even for children with a phenomenal memory. Therefore, do not try to learn as many cards as possible in a day. The kid, of course, is able to remember them, but without repetition, he will just as quickly forget them.

Why is it necessary to show one card for a short time and several times? Children cannot focus on one thing for a long time. Watch your baby: his eyes, like small lenses, try to fix absolutely everything around at once, and his head, like a periscope, rotates in all directions. And there is no need to shout and pull: your child knows that he must do everything while he is small, and the computer in his brain is still brand new, uncluttered with tons of information, like we adults have.

In what environment should learning take place? In the warmest and most comfortable for the baby:

    • use the time of his increased activity;
    • finish classes before he gets tired;
    • don't be the evil dragon in your child's imagination, but be too kind too.

What is the result of appeasing children with sweets for each correctly guessed word? To the fact that after some time your child will refuse to study without sweets, and also to diabetes, because children remember very quickly, and you will also run out of money for sweets very quickly.

Where can I get these wonderful language learning cards?
