Letter from High Overlord Saurfang. Varok Saurfang: Veteran of the Three Wars with brains and brawn

Although we know nothing about Varok's youth, we do know that he comes from the Black Stone Clan. His strength and bravery, which Varok Saurfang displayed as soon as he became a man, led Orgrim Doomhammer to make him his lieutenant during the First War.

The purpose of this period of Saurfang's life was battle, he killed left and right, not afraid of either the number of enemies or their skill. Mannoroth's blood coursed through his veins, giving him, like other orcs, a raging thirst for blood. His wife died during countless battles after the opening of the Dark Portal, and his son Dranosh was too young to follow his father and remain in Outland.

During the Second and Third Wars, Saurfang fought just as fiercely, joining other orcs in renewing their blood oath by drinking Hellscream from a foul well after Grom. And when the minds of the hate-maddened orcs brightened after the death of Mannoroth, he was among the first to realize the need to change the established order of things. He joined Thrall, becoming the great man's assistant for the third time.

By helping Thrall build and manage Orgrimmar, Saurfang was responsible for carrying out the Warchief's will. Few dared defy the will of this stern veteran of the Three Wars, who had earned eternal glory among the orcs. He rewarded heroes who were brave enough to defeat the black dragons and bring their heads to the Horde Capital.

Lyrical digression: The theme of Saurfang's assistant under Thrall is very well revealed in the cult machinima Tales of the Past. Compared to Thrall, this veteran looks like a sage, but he does not try to put pressure on Thrall with his authority, largely supporting his undertakings, solving issues that require brute force and giving good advice.

The experience and prestige that the warrior enjoyed among the members of the Horde and Alliance led to the fact that the already elderly orc joined the Combined Army of the Alliance and Horde during the War of the Shifting Sands. Although it is difficult to assess his personal contribution, it is clear that he contributed to the victory over the Qiraji.

After that, Saurfang's fate is once again shrouded in mist. What is known is that he was tasked with organizing Korkron, an elite organization of fighters that could form the backbone of an orc army. And to confront a similar organization of the Alliance - the Seventh Legion. The reasons for this are obvious: having seen enough of each other during the War of the Shifting Sands, the Alliance and the Horde understood each other's strengths and weaknesses and decided to use this knowledge.

A small portion of this squad was sent to Outland when the Dark Portal was reopened. However, the warrior and the bulk of Korkron were busy training and acting as Thrall's bodyguards.

When the undead of the Lich King attacked Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, it became clear that Saurfang's work was priceless. Only thanks to the well-trained soldiers of Korkron, Orgrimmar was able to defend. And when the first attack was repulsed, Varok Saurfang was sent to Northrend. It is not known exactly when Varok brought his son Dranosh from Outland and taught him the art of war. This likely happened between the opening of the Dark Portal and the Undead invasion.

In Northrend, Saurfang was engaged in organizational work, he monitored the order, the quality of the training of soldiers. And during the attack on the Wrathgate, it was the son of Saurfang, along with Bolvar Fordragon, who led the battle from the Horde. Despite the loss of Dranosh, Varok managed to maintain his courage.

Together with Thrall, he participated in the battle for the Undercity, not only did not lose heart, but also supported the Warchief, reminding him that duty to the people is above all. Even if your son dies before your eyes. Or the union of the Alliance and the Horde, which was cherished with such difficulty for many years, crumbles.

A strong will and unsurpassed talent as a warlord allowed Saurfang to lead a squad in an attack on Icecrown Citadel. He commanded the Horde Airship... And he carried away the lifeless body of his son, who had become a death knight.

Lyrical digression: Saurfang's peculiar rock-hard character and his equanimity created a local meme on English-language servers that draws an analogy with . If interested, you can read the facts about Saurfang on Wowpedia.

Now, at the behest of Garrosh Hellscream, Varok Saurfang is busy reinforcing the Horde's position in Northrend, maintaining tense neutrality with the Alliance.

Will he return? Who knows... With the shift towards PvP in Pandaria, given the heaps of leftover blanks for future content in WotLK in the form of Bolvar, the Scourge, living on its own and not obeying the Lich King, Saurfang's Stronghold may become the new base of the Horde, . And if the Alliance by this time restores its fortresses, seizes the buildings belonging to the Scarlet Order and begins to push the Horde, it may turn out to be a very curious meat porridge.

One way or another, Saurfang is one of those legendary heroes who has come a long way from an ordinary grunt to a commander. He learned to convince with sword and word, he stopped relying only on brute force, and his wise advice allowed Thrall to hold the Horde at the beginning of its inception. Perhaps it was Saurfang's advice that kept Garrosh Hellscream at bay during Thrall's warchief.

He is no longer just muscle. He has learned to use his mind.

I think the worst thing for most was the screams of the draenei children...
Never forget this...

Good time!
Today we will talk about a living legend, about a hero with a little-known biography, but not insignificant deeds, about a warrior who went a long way from an ordinary soldier to the supreme commander in chief, about an orc who went through all three wars, and left his deep imprint in each, about a father who managed to overcome the pain of losing his only beloved son. Varok Saurfang.

In ancient times, when Azeroth did not know what an orc was, when the draenei peacefully settled in their beautiful city of Shattrath, when the lands of Draenor bloomed and were filled with various living creatures, when the orcs were divided into many clans in one of these clans, called the Clan of the Black Stone, baby orc was born. His parents named him Varok. Varok grew up as a strong and strong orc, like his peers, from the age of 7 he learned to hold an ax in his hands, and by the age of 12 he already owned it to perfection. Hunting parties often took one or two young orcs on the hunt, who were given the chance to make their first kill. Each clan had a shaman who would bless the party for successful hunting, allowing them to kill a certain amount of prey. But nothing was wasted, the skin was used for clothes, meat for food, bones for tools. Such was the charter of life - if nature gives you a blessing, you must use it to the maximum benefit. On the very first hunt, Varok managed to show his skills, sneaking up quietly, he literally cut off the head of a roe deer with one blow, delivering her instant death without torment, which was very much appreciated among superstitious orcs. Stronger and grown up, Varok joined the clan's defensive detachments by the age of twenty. Sometimes there were skirmishes with neighboring clans, and good military training was very helpful. In the process of training, Varok learned to wield all known weapons, however, the ax remained the same comrade-in-arms for any orc. Everything went on as usual, Varok acquired a wonderful wife, by the standards of the orcs, who bore him a successor-son, named Dranosh, which in translation meant the Heart of Draenor. And everything would have been fine, but unrest among the clans began.

The Black Stone clan was one of the strongest orc clans, its leader, Blackhand the Destroyer, was famous for the ruthlessness and ferocity inherent in a real warrior, so he was one of the first to receive a message from Ner'zhul from the Shadowmoon Clan. The fact is that Ner'zhul called on clans to unite to create an unprecedented force, an army capable of conquering the whole world. Large clans joined voluntarily, but smaller and wilder ones refused, for which they were destroyed or called to join by force. Along with the Black Rock Clan, the Warsong Clan, under the leadership of the notorious Grom Hellscream, was in the forefront. Varok had heard much about this warrior, but had never met him. In the back of his mind, he always hoped that their clans' paths would not cross on the battlefield. Gul "dan, a student of Ner" Zul, offered the orcs to drink a decoction that gives incredible strength, which they could not even dream of, as you already understood, we are talking about the Blood of Mannoroth. Grom and Blackhand drank the potion first, then their clans. Varok was among them. Only the Clan of the Ice Wolf, led by Darotan, refused to drink the potion, for which he was expelled from the new united Horde, and another well-known personality of the Clan of the Black Stone - Orgrimm Doomhammer. The drink poured into the body in a burning stream, filling the body with unprecedented strength, the muscles turned to stone, it seemed that the body was torn from energy that urgently needed to be thrown out somewhere. An excess of energy made the orcs extremely aggressive, they grappled in constant fights, killed each other, Varok fought masterfully and proved to be an excellent warrior, Orgrimm Doomhammer, who occupied the second position in the clan after Blackhand, personally took up the training of Varok, seeing great potential in him. But the day came when the orcs discovered a common enemy.

Gul "dan at the next general meeting of the Horde assured the orcs that the draenei, with whom they had existed in peace and harmony for many years, were plotting against their community. That the blue-skinned two-hoofed creatures were going to break the orc settlements, take their women and children into slavery. The Horde flared up hatred and rage. Orgrimm Doomhammer knew where the magic-hidden draenei city of Shattrath was, as a boy, he and Darothan had been there, saved by a troop of draenei from an angry ogre. Under pressure from Blackhand, he led the way. An avalanche of the Horde broke into the peaceful city of the draenei, destroying everything on their way, the more they fought with the guards, the stronger the blood throbbed in their veins, the more fury exuded the body. old men, and he liked it.The blood oozing from the bodies of defeated opponents only provoked more murders, his eyes were covered with a red veil of gn Eva, the innocent draenei now seemed to be blood enemies, whom it was necessary to exterminate completely, destroy as a species, wipe out from the face of the earth. But the order was given to retreat, Orgrimm gathered troops and led them out of the city, announcing that the mission was completed. With great reluctance, finishing off the surviving draenei, the orcs left the ruined and plundered city, very pleased with themselves.
As the years passed, the orcs underwent many changes. The color of their skin turned from earthy brown to dirty green, their eyes became red, they lost their old traditions and rituals. Shamans faded into the background, giving way to sorcerers capable of summoning terrible creatures. Sorcerers made children grow faster, thereby replenishing the ranks of soldiers. But, despite the accelerated magical growth, the horchata remained small children, enclosed in huge muscular bodies. Varok, under the care of Doomhammer, has always lived among the top of the Horde. The draenei by that time were practically exterminated, animals were exterminated without any need. A period of stagnation and self-destruction began, when, bursting with bloodlust, the orcs began to attack each other again. But a solution to this problem was found.

Gul "dan announced the opening of a portal to a new world, according to him, cruel enemies are waiting on the other side of the energy funnel, who want to enslave and destroy the Horde. What's what, and managing the ferocious herd Gul" Dan managed just fine. Varok, fearing for the life and fate of his son Dranosh, was one of the first to volunteer to conquer unknown enemies. Along with Blackhand and Orgrim, he led his troops through the portal. The thirst for blood, replenished by the instinct of preservation and worries for loved ones, did their job. The horde swept through the lands of Azeroth in a deadly wave, sweeping away everything in its path. The first fortress that stood in the way of the Horde was destroyed. People, frightened by the appearance of unknown creatures, could not react quickly, for which they paid with their lives. And again bloodshed, and again there is no mercy for children, women, or the elderly. By this time, Orgrimm Doomhammer had seized control of the Horde by slaying the dim-witted Blackhand. People were serious opponents, they knew tactics and military affairs well, and a clear calculation was needed here. Blackhand's wild, primal methods are out of place here. Doomhammer appointed Saurfang as second in command of the army and his personal strategist. The issues of the new attack were discussed, first of all, with Varok and not in vain. A series of successful attacks allowed the Horde to further gain a foothold in Azeroth. But the successful actions of the First War did not give the orcs the desired victory. At the Battle of Blackrock Mountain, Doomhammer killed the commander-in-chief of the Alliance Anduin Lothar, but was defeated by the paladin Turalyon, the Horde was at a loss. Loss of a leader. Environment. Defeat. Captivity.

Varok ended up in an interpretive camp. Here the orcs were kept like cattle, in the mud, in a paddock, fed on waste. The thirst for blood receded, leaving behind a depressive state of weakness. Resentment and remorse for the committed deeds tore the soul of Varok. His wife and son, who remained in Draenor, would he ever see them? Hours turned into days and days into months. There was no desire to resist, no plans for the future. Varok resigned himself to his fate. But... the news spread that a certain orc Thrall had carried out a series of raids on the camps and freed the captive orcs. A spark of hope flared in Saurfang's chest again, could freedom be near, could he be home again, could he see Dranosh again. Freedom was not long in coming, on one of the summer nights an attack was made on the camp of people, a large detachment of orcs broke into the fortified settlement, tearing people apart. Varok saw the orcs fighting, and the morale returned to him again. And when he heard the painfully familiar battle cry of Thunder Hellscream, he finally realized that a second chance at life must be used. To the general delight of Varok, Orgrimm Doomhammer was also in the new army. Varok joined the rebel army and contributed significantly to developing strategies to attack the remaining camps. Everything went according to plan, the new birth of the Horde was approaching. However, I had to endure a heavy loss. Orgrimm was killed in one of the raids on the camps, he was speared, a treacherous stab in the back. With his last breath in the face of the now free orcs, Orgrimm proclaimed Thrall the leader of the New Horde.
Thrall resurrected the ancient ideals and customs of the orcs of Draenor, he returned them to the path of shamanism, honor and military duty. Together with Grom, at the cost of his life, they destroyed Mannoroth, removing the curse of demonic blood from the green-skinned orcs. Saurfang was ready to serve the New Horde until the last minute of his life. But the mistakes of the past haunted him, the cries and cries of the draenei children increasingly came to him in a dream. The burden of guilt hung like a huge shadow, and nothing could drive it away. Saurfang couldn't even eat pork, only because the squealing of the pigs reminded him of the desperate, ringing cries of draenei children. But be that as it may, Varok did not become limp and tried to control himself, hoping to atone for his guilt with new deeds for the glory of his people, for the salvation of his children.
Side by side with Thrall, Varok built the city of Orgrimmar, named after their mutual friend Orgrimm Doomhammer. Varok would be loyal to the new leader and unquestioningly carry out his orders, thus earning Thrall's unconditional trust. The wisdom and excellent art of war of an aging warrior became a decisive factor in choosing the commander-in-chief for a new military campaign.

The ancient evil imprisoned behind the Gates of the Kingdom of Ahn'Qiraj was rushing out. The threat was both for the Horde and for the Alliance. Varok Saurfang was chosen as commander-in-chief of the Army of Kalimdor. In addition, not only orcs were in the army, the combined forces of the Alliance and dwarves were also subordinate to Varok. Saurfang's fiery speech is forever engraved in the hearts of his charge troops. He did not side with the horde, he did not condescend to the orcs, he led his troops: people, elves, dwarves and tauren on a par with blood brothers. The goal was to defeat the Qiraji. A successful war campaign made Varok a veteran of the Three Wars, imprinting him forever in Horde history. He received the rank of Supreme Rulers and became the commander-in-chief of all the forces of the Horde. Joint work with the Alliance also did not go unnoticed, people and orcs learned to work together, despite their fierce hatred for each other. They followed the tactics of warfare, they learned to cover the backs of former enemies, stepping over enmity for the sake of salvation. Saurfang, observing the forces of the Alliance, noticed one feature, each of the warriors who came was perfectly trained in their craft, whether they were archers or swordsmen, defenders or spearmen. In the Horde, from an early age, every orc was trained in military affairs, regardless of who he would become in the future, a warrior or a simple blacksmith, a cook or a scout. But it was worth thinking about a separate military caste, specialized only in martial arts and enhanced training.

After defeating the Qiraji, Saurfang persuaded Thrall to let him go to his son. Varok's wife died during the Second War from an illness and was buried in Nagrand, while Dranosh lived in the care of his mother Gaia. By that time, the guy was much stronger, Dranosh was already about 20 years old when his father agreed to take him to Azeroth. The younger Saurfang did not have a chance to participate in the wars, however, he was well prepared. In Draenor, he organized a defense squad of his village to defend himself against the raids of predators and bandits.
Similar to the famous Seventh Legion of the Alliance, Saurfang assembled a detachment of the best warriors, called Kor "Kron. A small part of the elite detachment went to Draenor to support the orc settlements living there, including women and children who did not move to Draenor. The rest remained in Orgrimmar as Thrall's personal guard Kor "Krons trained daily, improving their combat skills under the guidance of the Supreme Ruler Saurfang, the old warrior personally selected recruits and conducted training demonstration battles for them. When the Black Dragonflight emerged, led by Onyxia and Nefarian, who made an alliance with the brothers Mame and Rend Blackhand, Saurfang personally saw the heroes out of the city and rewarded the brave who managed to defeat the dragons.

Armies of the undead spread throughout Kalimdor, destroying small villages and settlements near Orgrimmar. Cor "Crowns of Saurfang stood up for the defense of the city that became their home and managed to repel the attack of the Scourge. Wave after wave they sent already dead creatures to the next world. Finally, making sure that the city was safe, Varok, along with his son and Garrosh Hellscream, went to Northrend Varok busied himself with training and organizing the army at Warsong Hold under Garrosh, while Dranosh went to join forces with the Alliance at the Wrathgate. they can conclude that the old warrior tolerates the impudence and recklessness of Hellscream only out of respect for Thrall and Garrosh's father:

Saurfang: We are surrounded... Enemies come from all sides, young Hellscream. The scourge is coming from the north like locusts. The Alliance holds the only safe sea route in this area, and even that could be lost in this cursed haze. Our only viable supply port is in the hands of the Forsaken and is on the other side of the cursed mainland! Anything that the zeppelins cannot lift must be brought in by ship and hauled across Northrend to us.

Garrosh growls.

Garrosh: Sea routes... supply... I'm sick of you! We want nothing more than the warrior spirit of the Horde, Saurfang! Now that we are firmly entrenched in this frozen wilderness, nothing will stop us!
Saurfang: Siege engines, ammo, heavy armor... How do you propose breaking the walls of Icecrown without them?
Garrosh: Offer? I'll show you what I offer!

Garrosh demolishes the figures and the flag that represent Valiant Hold on the map.
Garrosh: Here... Here we have the sea route. So, just in case...

Garrosh takes down the figures and the flag that represent Valgarde and Westgarde Strongholds on the map.
Saurfang: Look, the prodigal son has spoken! Your father's blood is strong in your veins, Hellscream. As always, impatient... Impatient and reckless. You thoughtlessly rush into a real war, and without thinking about the consequences.
Garrosh: Don't talk to me about the consequences, old man.
Saurfang: I drank the same blood as your father, Garrosh. And my heart, too, raced through my veins with the cursed poison of Mannoroth. I plunged my weapons into the bodies and souls of my enemies. And while Grom died a glorious death - freeing us all from the curse of blood - he could not erase the terrible memory of our past. His deed did not erase the horrors we had committed.
Saurfang: In the winter that came after the curse was lifted, hundreds of veteran orcs like me plunged into despair. Yes, our souls were free... Free to relive all the unthinkable that we had created under the influence of the Legion.

Saurfang nods.

Saurfang: I think the worst thing for most was the screaming of the draenei children... It's never forgotten... Have you ever been to a pig farm? When the pigs are at the age to be slaughtered... That's the sound. The squeal of pigs being slaughtered... It resonates most strongly in my memory. This is a hard time for us old veterans to endure.
Garrosh: But you don't think those kids would still be innocent, do you? They would grow up and turn their weapons against us!

Saurfang shakes his head.

Saurfang: I'm not just talking about the children of our enemies...
Saurfang: I will not let you lead us down that dark path again, young Hellscream. I'll kill you myself before that day comes...
Garrosh: How did you manage to live so long, Saurfang? Without falling victim to your own memory?
Saurfang: I don't eat pork...

Saurfang spits.

Having devoted himself to his beloved work, the training of Kor "Kronov, Varok did not forget about his son. Dranosh sent messages daily from the other side of the front, but one day he disappeared. For several days there was no news from his son, Varok was terribly worried, sleepless nights made him absent-minded and tired and finally the news came.

The combined forces of the Alliance and Horde clashed with the army of the Lich King at the Wrathgate, when the Fallen Prince personally approached the troops, Dranosh rushed into battle, but was defeated. The Lich King killed Saurfang's only son. Gathering all his will into a fist, Varok did not let his emotions take over the mind. To gather his courage, Varok went to see Thrall, who at this time was extremely worried about the actions of the Forsaken. As it turned out, the remaining troops of the Horde fell from the Plague, sent by a certain Gnilles. It was necessary to sort out their ranks before engaging in battle with an external enemy. Varok accompanied Thrall on the Assault on the Undercity, which had been taken over by the Dread Lord, after successfully retaking the underground city for the Forsaken, Varok volunteered to return to the operation to storm Icecrown Citadel.

Returning to Northrend, Saurfang took command of all the forces of Kor "Kronov and occupied the Flying Ship Hammer of Orgrimm. He personally led the assault on Icecrown Citadel. But as he approached the Frozen Throne, a terrible surprise awaited him. Dranosh was alive. Well, or rather resurrected. Arthas returned to the life of a young orc in the form of his puppet - a death knight. Iron will and full awareness of what happened allowed Varok to fight with his own son and gain the upper hand. Varok decided to take Dranosh's body in order to bury him in his native land in Nagrand.

High Overlord Saurfang yells: Forward, Cor'Kron! Run, heroes! The Scourge may soon...!
Saurfang Deathbringer yells: Join me, father. Become one of us and we will destroy the world in the name of the Scourge... and for the glory of the Lich King!
High Overlord Saurfang says: My boy died at the Wrathgate. I only came to collect his body.
Saurfang Deathbringer says: Old fool! What are you hoping for? I am stronger and more powerful than you ever were.
High Overlord Saurfang says: We named him Drenosh. What does "Heart of Draenor" mean in Orcish. I didn't let the warlocks take it from me. Soon my boy will be safe, far away, next to Garadar's ancestors. I promised something to his mother before she died. I said that I would go through the Dark Portal alone, and whatever happened to me, my son would be safe. Undefiled... And now I will fulfill my vow...

Saurfang fought his son in duel, and after the death of the Drenosh, Saurfang was free. And as soon as his heart stopped beating, Varok, sobbing, lifted the mortal body of his son in his arms and carried it to the "Hammer of Orgrimm".

High Overlord Saurfang says: You will be buried in Nagrand, next to your mother and ancestors.
Hold on with honor, young heroes! No matter how monstrous the battle is... fight to the last!
Eventually, Arthas fell, the tyranny of the Scourge came to an end, and the newly rallied forces of the Horde and Alliance dispersed to their sides, continuing fleeting skirmishes and skirmishes.

When the elemental realm was driven mad by Neltharion, Thrall left the Horde in the hands of Garrosh Hellscream, while he himself went in search of the causes of what was happening. Varok was directed by Garrosh back to Northrend at Warsong Hold, named after Garrosh's father's clan. Saurfang was supposed to be engaged in strengthening the positions of the Horde in the northern lands. With the Alliance, in a series of events, it was necessary to keep the peace.
In fact, I really do not understand why Thrall left Garrosh in place of the leader. Young, frivolous and intoxicated with rage. Perhaps Garrosh's experience in Northrend and successful campaigns had proven him to be a good general, but he was backed by Varok. The old orc has come a long way from a young warrior, seized with a thirst for blood, to a wise and truly great commander. He deserved more than anyone to take the place of the leader, although it seems to me that Varok himself would not have agreed to take this post. First of all, he is a soldier, he is used to leading his ward sons of the horde - Kor "Krons, who have become his family, and the burden of responsibility to the whole people was not for him. Although, I'm sure he could handle it.
One way or another, Saurfang is a legendary hero worthy of a lifetime monument. He learned to wield not only with an ax, but also with his mind. His advice and guidance came in handy during the formation of the New Horde, after the loss of Doomhammer, Thrall needed a spiritual mentor, and he received it. The name of Varok is not as famous and popular as the names of other heroes, perhaps his merits have not yet received the proper calling while he is alive. However, he used to cause a lot of problems for Alliance players. Being at the very gates of the old Orgrimmar, he cordially met the Alliance raids, brandishing his huge ax, and not every of the arriving detachments reached the leader’s chamber, many, tired of running from the cemetery, preferred to accept “death” at the gates of the orc city.

Honestly, I confess to you that I wildly hate jokes about Chuck Norris, which were very popular not so long ago, but since we are talking about Varok Saurfang, we will have to raise this topic. In the days of vanilla, in the famous "Burrens Chat" you could often read ridiculous jokes that compared Varok to Chuck. Here are some examples of such statements:

Varok Saurfang:

Floor: male
Race: orc
Class: warrior
Affiliation: Horde
Position: Supreme ruler of the Kor "Kron Guards, commander, adviser to the War Leader
Status: alive
Family: Drenosh Saurfang (son), Broxigar (brother)
Varok Saurfang deservedly claims to be the Horde's greatest warlord ever. Although his fame is far from that of Thrall, his wisdom and caution, combined with the fearlessness inherent in every orc, as well as invaluable experience, make him indispensable in the life of Orgrimmar.

Appearance:

A gray-haired warrior, strong and powerful, despite his age. In combination with green skin, this easily betrays him as a veteran of the First and Second World Wars. His eyes have seen a lot of grief, and now they show confidence and wisdom - and not a drop of bloodlust. His whole appearance inspires respect and confidence, and there is so much spirit hidden in gestures and words that warriors are ready to follow him through any horrors for honor for the glory of the Horde.

Character:

Saurfang's calm judgment and confidence contrast sharply with the raw impetuosity and recklessness of young orcs, but commands respect. These qualities have developed in Varok's soul over the years, come with wisdom and experience. In his youth, he was one of thousands of bloodthirsty warriors who, under the influence of the blood curse, committed terrible crimes: they killed innocents, women and children, reveled in their screams and enjoyed the passion of carnage. But, unlike many other orcs, Saurfang realized the horror of his deeds and, when the curse receded, he lost all hope of redemption for a long time. Morale returned to him only after Thrall's rebellion and the restoration of the Horde. But now his conscience is tormenting him. Memories of the screams of draenei children torment his soul.
Saurfang is simple in expression, in his words the constructiveness and logic inherent in warriors. He is ready to say a wise word, in one phrase to reason with the impatient and reckless. He can always take the initiative in his own hands. Saurfang is the best example of an honor orc.

The battle:

In the battles for Icecrown Citadel, Varok Saurfang proved to be an excellent fighter. He not only led the Horde warriors, but he himself threw himself into the thick of the battle, demonstrating furious fury and all the skills acquired over many years of continuous fighting, past and present. Realizing his importance, as a commander of the Horde, for the further course of the war and the fighting spirit of the soldiers, he never exposed himself to unnecessary danger, but he never hid behind the backs of his soldiers. Although Saurfang's fighting style can be described as veritable orcish, Saurfang never loses his head in a duel and always knows when to retreat or delay his attack.

Story:

Varok Saurfang became a Horde warrior at the dawn of its existence, and went through all its troubles: the worst war crimes against peaceful draenei and people, a blood pact, lethargy and apathy, imprisonment in one of the Lordaeron camps. The war pulled him out of peaceful life for many years, took him away from his family, and threw him into massacre. He was one of the few orcs who resisted cruelty.
Even before the First War, Varok Saurfang had a son, who was named "Draenosh" - "the heart of Draenor". When Gul "dan led the orcs to Azeroth, he promised his wife that Drenosh would never become a bloodthirsty warrior in the service of the warlocks, but would remain pure. He would never wish his child the fate that he lived
myself.
After the Second War, the blood curse receded, and Saurfang ended up in the Interpreted camp. He was tormented by his conscience for his deeds committed during the war, and he lost all hope for a better life, and this was until Thrall freed the orcs and revived the Horde in the ideals of honor and shamanism. Saurfang was ready to serve such a Horde to the last drop of blood.
Saurfang gained fame as a great warlord during the Second Shifting Sands War. He was the commander-in-chief of the Army of Kalimdor, which united the best units of the Alliance and Horde to stop the silithid invasion.
Years later, Saurfang became one of the Horde's warlords in Northrend, chief advisor to the warsong leader Garrosh Hellscream. There he commanded the Kor "Kron guard, the Horde's elite army. His vision of military affairs was sharply different from Garrosh's rough but effective methods, but the army fully supported the young and charismatic commander. And yet, Saurfang acted in secret. He often insured Garrosh, turned attention to the nuances that he did not see, and worked with cunning where brute force did not work.
In the battle at the Wrathgate, Varok's only son, Drenosh, died, but the unfortunate father did not dwell on his loss. The Horde was at a turning point, and Saurfang did everything he could to support the young Warchief Thrall. He also participated in the battle for the Undercity in the non-replaceable role of commander Kor "Kron.
And soon Varok Saurfang was at the forefront of events. He led the Horde into the heart of Icecrown Citadel, led them to the very heart of the Scourge, the Frozen Throne. But at the last gate of the citadel, he came face to face with his son, Drenosh, who had been turned by the Lich King into the mightiest of death knights. Remembering the oath he made to his wife back in Draenor that their son would always be undefiled and that he would be buried not in a foreign land, but on the fields of Nagrand, Saurfang struck down his son, and freed him from the power of the lord of the Scourge. And then he left the camp of the Horde and went to Draenor to fulfill his last duty to his family.
Varok Saurfang's speech to the Army of Kalimdor during the Second Shifting Sands War:
"I am Saurfang. Broxigar's brother. You know me, I am the supreme commander of the Army of Kalimdor. An orc - if he is a true warrior - dreams of dying in glorious combat with a sworn enemy. Some have been in combat here before. We have lived in peace for many years "Many years we sit idle, but many years we fight. In those years - the years of strife, when both the Legion and the Scourge destroyed our homes, killed our loved ones - these insects lived under our feet. Under our homes - and waited. Waiting for the day when they can kill our children. Kill everything in their path. All this for their god. And what about our gods? We came here. We will protect them. All as one. United. We will break them. Their god will die "Our death today will mean the death of all orcs. Our death is the death of our children. Our old people. Our... loved ones and relatives. Who needs such a death? Such an honor?"

Saurfang and Garrosh in Warsong Hold:

Saurfang and Garrosh confer over a map of Northrend, showing the location of the main Alliance, Horde, and Scourge troops.
High Overlord Saurfang: Fear has always been our best weapon. Entire wars have been won and lost on the shaky shoulders of awe and doubt. So how then to fight the enemy who knows no fear?
<Саурфанг качает головой>
We're not just fighting the Scourge in Northrend, we're seeking control of our senses before they tear us apart...
Garrosh Hellscream: The destruction of Orgrimmar was not only directed against the orcs, it was a challenge to the entire Horde. An attack against our very existence!
The Lich King intended to sow panic and fear.
This is...
<Гаррош указывает пальцем на укрепленные стены, окружающие его.>
This is the result of Arthas' campaign.
The Horde fears nothing and no one...
We are surrounded... Our enemies press from all sides, young Hellscream.
The scourge comes from the north like locusts.
The Alliance holds the only safe sea route in the region, and even there there is a risk of getting bogged down in this terrifying mist.
Our only chance to resupply is in the port that the Forsaken hold on the other side of this cursed continent!
Anything that our airships cannot lift into the air must be brought in by ships and transported across Northrend to reach us.
<Гаррош Адский Крик ворчит.>
Garrosh Hellscream: Sea routes... goods... You bore me to death. All we need is the warrior spirit of the Horde, Saurfang! Now that we are firmly entrenched in these frozen wastelands, nothing will stop us!
High Overlord Saurfang: Siege weapons, ammo, armor... How do you propose to crush the walls of Icecrown without all that?
Garrosh Hellscream: Suggest? I'll show you what I offer!
<Гаррош сносит фигурки и флаги, обозначающие на карте крепость Отваги>
There... Now we have a sea route. And for good measure...
<Гаррош сносит фигурки и флаги, обозначающие на карте порт Валгард и крепость Западной Стражи>
High Overlord Saurfang: So the prodigal son has spoken!
Your father's blood runs in your veins, Hellscream. Impatient as always... Impatient and reckless.
You rushed headlong into total war without thinking about the consequences.
Garrosh Hellscream: Don't talk to me about the consequences, old man.
High Overlord Saurfang: I drank the same blood as your father, Garrosh. The cursed poison of Mannoroth runs through my veins too.
I plunged my weapons into the bodies and minds of my enemies.
And although Grom died a glorious death - freeing us all from the blood curse - he could not erase the terrible memories of our past.
His actions will not erase the memory of the horrors we have experienced.
<Верховный правитель Саурфанг делает паузу>
High Overlord Saurfang: In the winter, after the curse was broken, hundreds of battle-hardened orcs like me lost all hope.
Our minds were finally free, yes... Free to relive all the unthinkable things we'd done under the influence of the Legion.
<Верховынй правитель Саурфанг кивает.>
I think it was like a draenei baby, that sound unnerved most of them... You'll never forget that...
Have you ever been to the Pig Farm? When the pigs grow up and it's time to slaughter them... that's the sound. The sound of screeching when they are being cut... it just hangs in my ears now. This is a tough time for us old veterans.
Garrosh Hellscream: But you can't think that these children were born in innocence, can you? They would grow up and go to war with us!
<Верховный правитель качает головой.>
High Overlord Saurfang: I'm not just talking about the children of our enemies...
<Верховный правитель Саурфанг делает паузу.>
I will not let you lead us down this dark path again, young Hellscream. I'll kill you myself...
Garrosh Hellscream: How do you manage to stay alive so far, Saurfang? Not fall prey to deceit in your own memories?
High Overlord Saurfang: I don't eat pork...
<Верховный правитель Саурфанг плюет.>

Dialogue between Varok and Drenosh Saurfang in Icecrown Citadel:

The Kor'Kron Guard disembarked from the Orgrimm's Hammer airship in front of the Citadel gates.
High Overlord Saurfang yells: Forward, Kor "crowns! Run, heroes! The Scourge may soon ...!
Saurfang Deathbringer yells: Join me, father. Become one of us and we will destroy the world in the name of the Scourge... and for the glory of the Lich King!
My boy died at the Wrathgate.

Popularity of Saurfang among players:

Even before the release of The Burning Crusade, Saurfang had become extremely popular with Horde players. The thing is that the Supreme Ruler Saurfang, being right in the center of Orgrimmar, could only be compared in his strength with the most severe raid bosses, so he easily broke off the Alliance raids on the Horde city. In addition, the speech he gave in Silithus to the Army of Kalimdor made the old warrior respectful and was discussed more than once in the Barrens chat.
Inheriting the humorous "Chuck Norris Facts" popular at the time on the Internet, the Horde compiled a list of "Saurfang Facts" - a set of jokes on the subject of "World of Warcraft", understandable, basically, only to players. Here are a few examples (there are thousands of these facts):
"The whirlpool appeared when Saurfang attacked the ship and used the pinwheel."
"Saurfang fights dishonorably because whoever he kills doesn't score honor points."
"Raids and instances are places where Saurfang dump their annoying items."
"Mankrik's wife made a fool of herself by telling Saurfang that axes are better than swords."
"When Orgrimmar was first being built, Thrall asked Saurfang to test the strength of the gate. As a result of his charge, the Fire Chasm was formed."
"Moscow wasn't built right away, but Saurfang can destroy it in a minute."
"K'tun is hiding from Saurfang, really."
"Once Saurfang led a raid on Ironforge. After the raiders wanted to go to Stormwind, but Saurfang did not want to climb mountains and fields all day, and went straight. The direct path laid by Saurfang was then equipped by the dwarves and made an Underground train there" .
"Saurfang only needs 6 hours of sleep per week. Those 6 hours is the weekly server check on Wednesdays."

Thanks for watching!

After winning the battle on the ships, players move on to the fourth encounter, which invites the raid members to meet with Saurfang Deathbringer. First of all, the battle is interesting from the tactical side. It allows you to get a lot of pleasure with its originality and dynamism.

Throughout the fight, Saurfang will gain Blood Energy. The task of the players includes opposite actions, namely its minimization. In theory, everything is quite simple, but in practice, not everyone succeeds and, most importantly, not immediately. If Saurfang gains Blood Energy too quickly, he will soon cover the entire raid with Marks of the Fallen Champion, which will naturally lead to a wipe. To prevent this from happening, Saurfang's EC gain from various sources should be reduced. It is important to remember that the Doom Stamp is placed by the boss at 100 EC. We draw conclusions and play meaningfully!

First of all, all raid members must clearly understand where Saurfang will draw blood energy from:

  • add attacks- bring the boss 3 energy points for each mile the add hits the target;
  • Blood Nova- Cast by the boss and has a 12 yard radius, gives Saurfang 2 EC for each affected;
  • Rune of Blood- in addition to healing the boss, it also gives him 1 unit of energy for each hit on the tank on which it hangs;
  • Boiling Blood- gives the boss 1 EC per tick;
  • Mark of the Fallen Champion- infernal thing, also gives the boss 1 EC per tick.

Now let's figure out how to deal with all this splendor! The easiest way is to minimize the supply of EC from Nova's Blood. It is necessary to arrange the raid in such a way that no more than two players get into the nova at a time. Simply put, we do not build a “powerful bunch” of ourselves, but stand apart.

Also very interesting is the case with the adds. The main thing is not to let them attack in melee. For this, all kinds of traps, totems, etc. are placed by the raid. The kite technique is used, when one player kites an add and shoots a ranged DD at the same time.

Boiling blood nothing to kill, this debuff will periodically hang on several raid players, so there is not much point in dwelling on it. Concerning Fallen Champion Stamps, then you can reduce the damage from it in several ways. Firstly, this debuff has a tick when the boss hits the tank. It is quite obvious that if the tank has a high dodge rating, then it will get fewer hits. Another way is to be less likely to get hit by the hot hand of the add and within the range of the blood nova. In this case, Marks will be cast less often by the boss.

In short, you can go through the tasks of the raid players.

Tanks.

As mentioned above, it is very important for tanks to have a high evasion rate. Saurfang is very fond of playing out the next scenario, which inevitably leads to a wipe. Puts the Mark of the Fallen Champion on the participants, often hits the tank, which means that it often receives EC. The more often he gets EC, the more often he casts Mark. The strategy is clear as day, so there is no way to yawn.

In the first phases of the battle, everything should go smoothly, the main thing is to keep track of who is on brand and Boiling Blood. In the later stages, it may be necessary to assign a separate group of players to each heal.

Mili DD.

They must carefully move away from the attacks of adds and at the same time do not forget their direct duties - to maximize DPS on Saurfang. In general, it is enough for melee players to adhere to the recommendations given above in the text.

Range DD.

DPS on anything that moves, especially spawning adds are given a warm welcome. It is important to place pets within a mile radius of Saurfang, as they can be targeted by Blood Nova.

In conclusion, we can say that in this battle, not only the overall coherence of the raid's actions, but also the preparation of each raider individually plays a very important role. This includes a thorough knowledge of tactics, and complete "combat" readiness.

Varok Saurfang is a legendary warrior, said to be able to kill multiple opponents with a single blow. In the introductory quests of the Battle for Azeroth, Saurfang played a significant role ... and then suddenly disappeared. However, this does not mean at all that we will not see him again. Most likely, Varok is preparing for a new high-profile appearance in the future.

Can Saurfang be a Warchief? Certainly it can. He led an army before the orcs passed through the Dark Portal, and was Warchief Blackhand's close associate in the war against the draenei on Draenor. Saurfang fought valiantly in the First War, so Orgrim, who took Blackhand's place, chose Varok as his first lieutenant and assigned him to command the army in the Second War.

No one knows what happened to Saurfang after the Horde lost the Second War. Most likely, he ended up in a prisoner of war camp, or maybe he managed to escape ... which, however, is unlikely, because there were very few who escaped from captivity. The next time Saurfang came into view was during the Third War, he fought at Mount Hyjal and witnessed the fall of Archimonde.
In that battle, he was able to impress Thrall, who was in command of the Horde at the time, and received a position in Orgrimmar, where he oversaw the execution of the warchief's orders for several years. These were peaceful years, but it was then that Saurfang began to command respect among the orcs. When the War of the Shifting Sands began, Saurfang, on Thrall's orders, led the Might of Kalimdor, a combined army of Horde and Alliance warriors rallied against the imminent threat from the Qiraji.

Saurfang enjoyed Thrall's complete trust, and so some time later he traveled to Northrend to become Garrosh Hellscream's advisor. Thrall knew there was no better example for the young Garrosh. Unfortunately, as we all know, Varok's journey to Northrend ended tragically.
The tragedy in Northrend was far from Saurfang's first. He was one of those who deliberately drank Mannoroth's blood and was well aware of the consequences. Having fallen under the curse of blood, Saurfang participated in attacks on the draenei, and after that war for many years he imagined the death cries of draenei children. It is unlikely that he was proud of what he did then. During the Third War, Grom Hellscream finally freed his people from the curse, and Varok, among other orcs, regretted what he had done.

But at the same time he did not fall into despondency. On the contrary, Varok helped his brothers come to terms with the past, consoled many brave warriors and saved many lives. In general, Saurfang is not too humane - he knows that it is supposed to fight in a war. If he needed to protect his people, he would do so, while maintaining honor and dignity and trying not to think about the years spent in slavery to the Burning Legion.

If you think Varok is strong in hindsight, it's not. When the Dark Portal first opened, Saurfang sent his son Dranosh to Garadar, a small village in Nagrand. He hoped that there the child would be able to hide from the ubiquitous Horde warlocks. Varok promised his wife that their son would never pass through the Dark Portal and experience the effects of corruption.

If Saurfang truly believed in the rightness of the Horde's actions, he would never have hidden Dranosh in Garadar. Even then, he suspected that the plans of the leaders were erroneous.

The realization of the mistake he had made came with the weight of guilt that Saurfang had quietly carried with him all his life. He never spoke of this burden openly, but he always pointed it out in his actions. He felt guilty about what happened to the draenei on Draenor, so he helped other orcs come to terms with the past.
Most likely, he felt guilty for leaving his son in Garadar - alone, without a father and without a mother, who died shortly before the opening of the Dark Portal, so when Thrall came to Nagrand with the new Horde, Varok took Dranosh to Azeroth. This time he did not go to fight, he wanted a bright future for his son - a future without warlocks, Filth and demonic blood, a future in a new world where there was a place for everyone.

When Dranosh died, Saurfang's guilt was undeniable, for he had broken his word to his wife by allowing his son to pass through the portal, even if decades later. And in the end, their son not only died, but was turned into a terrible undead, which turned against the former allies. And when the heroes nevertheless managed to defeat Dranosh, Saurfang again found himself with his son at home, in Nagrand, where he was able to provide him with eternal rest, but the feeling of guilt did not disappear.

Saurfang has witnessed many bloody atrocities in his life, and Sylvanas' antics are far from the worst that he has seen or done. Still, the Banshee Queen apparently managed to bring Saurfang to the boiling point. Before the battle for Lordaeron, Saurfang prepared to take on the Alliance, presumably in hopes of a dignified death. Maybe that's how he wanted to atone for the Horde's guilt over Teldrassil.

Saurfang could not forget the cries of the draenei children - not to mention the cries of the elves who lived on the branches of the world tree and burned alive with him. Yes, Saurfang did not personally set fire to Teldrassil and did not give such an order, but he was certainly guilty, because without his leadership the Horde would never have reached Darkshore.
However, as the battle begins, the young troll shaman Zekhan convinces Saurfang not to sacrifice himself. The Horde is all Zekhan has, and so is Saurfang. Inspired by Zekhan's words, Saurfang joins the Army... but Sylvanas's actions plunge him back into despair.

Saurfang did not approve of the use of the plague, and was outraged when Sylvanas refused to remove the bodies of the fallen from the battlefield, as honor demanded. Sylvanas turned those fallen warriors into undead, and they effectively repeated the fate of Dranosh in Northrend. Sylvanas left Saurfang no choice, and he was left alone on the battlefield, hoping for a dignified death.

But Varok was not destined to die. Anduin withdrew his troops, remembering that his father, King Varian Wrynn, considered Saurfang one of the most noble warriors of the Horde and even somewhat admired him. Anduin himself treated Saurfang in exactly the same way, and therefore did not allow his warriors to kill him. Instead, Saurfang was captured by the Alliance and imprisoned in Stormwind.

It is there that Horde players see Varok Saurfang for the last time. He is no longer a leader, he is a mere prisoner. The players offer Saurfang to run, but Saurfang refuses. He doesn't want to go back to Sylvanas' Horde after what she did. Saurfang sees a clear difference between loyalty and honor, and knows that sometimes you have to choose between the two.

Varok Saurfang makes his choice and remains in the cell, while the Horde players continue on their way without him.

Can Saurfang lead the Horde army again? Yes, if he gets the chance. And if Sylvanas takes off the mantle of the leader ... or even leaves the Horde. Sylvanas is waging war in ways too brutal and bloodthirsty for Saurfang to accept. He has tried everything to forget the years spent under the curse of blood, and does not want to return to the past. And Saurfang doesn't want to follow the one who, by her actions, is becoming more and more like the monster that raised Dranosh from the dead.
Saurfang exemplifies the qualities that Anduin hoped to see in Sylvanas in Before the Storm, namely a desire to compromise and bring the factions closer together. Varok doesn't want war. He understands that in some cases war is necessary, and is ready to fight to the last breath to protect the Horde. But he cannot understand the desire for a senseless slaughter. Saurfang agreed to participate in the War of Thorns because he hoped to gain an advantage over the Alliance in the fight for Azerite. He did not consent to the killing of innocents and was horrified when Sylvanas destroyed Teldrassil.

Saurfang has long been respected by the warriors of the Horde. He was respected even by his opponents from the Alliance - those who served under him in the Might of Kalimdor, and those who fought the Scourge in Icecrown Citadel and saw King Varian Wrynn withdraw his troops and find words of comfort for his heartbroken father. If Saurfang had expressed a desire to become Warchief, hardly anyone would have objected.
But does he have such a desire? If Saurfang were to become Warchief by the will of circumstances, he would certainly do his duty, but not for power or world domination. Saurfang doesn't need power. He needs the Horde to return to its former glory, and if he had the opportunity... I think he would take it.
