Gaijin Entertainment announces the release of update 1.71 "New Era" for the military online action game War Thunder. With it, the sixth rank of ground vehicles appeared in the game, almost three dozen new tanks and aircraft, new maps, a view from the aircraft gunner and other novelties.

Rank VI:

At the sixth rank of ground vehicles, combat vehicles of the 60-70s will be presented, using technologies characteristic of modern tank building. They will allow players to act in battle faster and more decisively. New types of armor - combined and dynamic - will enhance protection against cumulative projectiles and missiles; gun stabilizers will allow you to shoot on the move; smoke screens will give a second chance if the first attack fails; and hydraulic suspensions and ATGMs will provide more opportunities for an aimed shot in difficult terrain. Together, this will make battles on high-level vehicles even more dynamic and varied.

New technique:

Pioneers at rank six were the Soviet T-64A and BMP-1, the American M60A1 RISE (P) and MBT-70 tanks, the British Chieftain Mk.10 and FV102 Striker, and the German KPz-70. Two dozen new tanks and aircraft appeared at other ranks as well. Among the latest in aviation, it is worth highlighting the American XA-38 "Grizzly" - an attack aircraft armed with a 75-mm cannon, designed to destroy heavily armored ground vehicles. The Be-6 flying boat appeared in the ranks of Soviet aviation, equipped with five 23-mm cannons in three turrets and capable of carrying up to four tons of bomb load.

New cards:

Along with the technology of the new era, War Thunder also introduced the most modern map by the standards of the game - the Fulda Corridor. In a valley on the border between West and East Germany, there was a place for both an old castle and a wind farm. Between the hills there are many arenas for close combat, and tank snipers will be able to choose firing positions not only along the edges of the map, but also in its very center, constantly being in interaction with comrades. Also in the list of new locations appeared "Imperial Garden", where tank and air battles will unfold in a picturesque Japanese village at the foot of the mountains. Fans of realistic aircraft battles will be able to meet in the sky above the Hurtgen Forest.

View from the shooter:

Also with update 1.71, the view from the aircraft turret became available to players. It will be possible to look at the battlefield from the point of view of the airborne gunner on more than 50 aircraft with one shooting point.

Update 1.71 "New Era" is already available in the game, you can see the full list of new features on the War Thunder website.

  • For ATGM carriers, hitting a missile or launcher now makes it impossible to fire the missile in all game modes. The parameters of the materials of the ATGM and the guide have been changed in such a way that it is possible to destroy them and fail when hit by rifle-caliber bullets.
  • Fixed a bug with limiting the range of a tank rangefinder in RB/SB to 2000 m: now range measurement is possible at distances from 2500 to 5000 m, depending on the type of rangefinder. On rank 6 tanks - 5000 m using stereo and laser rangefinders.
  • For armor-piercing high-explosive (HESH) shells, the armor effect has been improved: now secondary fragments when the armor is hit are formed along the normal to the surface of the armor, and not in the direction of the shell hit.
  • A bug has been fixed due to which it was possible to generate secondary fragments from a cumulative jet when the module was not penetrated through, for example, when the breech of the gun was hit. As a result, the jet did not pierce this module right through, but secondary fragments from the hit formed and hit other modules and the crew.
  • The values of the armor slope effect (slope effect) of high-explosive armor-piercing (HESH) shells have been refined for the range of angles from 30 to 10 degrees. Penetration for the specified corners has been reduced.

War Thunder for us is a kind of joint training ground for military equipment of the 20th century. In our game, vehicles from different countries and design schools meet in one battle. The game allows you to simulate vehicles with a sufficient degree of realism to show our players the capabilities of these vehicles. And despite the deep elaboration of the implementation of all systems and components of a wide variety of vehicles, controlling tanks and aircraft in War Thunder remains quite accessible to players, which means that players can focus not on studying instruction manuals, but on the gameplay itself. Post-war main battle tanks (MBTs) fit perfectly into our game.

How good are these cars in terms of gameplay?

They have high mobility and strong armor in a narrow sector, making them more dynamic to play and encourage tactical thinking. The sides of even the most modern tanks at a right angle can be pierced by an armor-piercing projectile T-55 or M-47 from a distance of more than two kilometers. At the same time, in the frontal projection in the zones of maximum protection, MBTs of the latest generations can withstand the hit of weapons with armor penetration up to 1000-1200 mm. Therefore, if you correctly position yourself in relation to the enemy, you can be a little vulnerable, and if you let the enemy into the flank, you will be pierced. In addition, almost all post-war MBTs were equipped with a weapon stabilizer, which made it possible to fire on the move, which also had a positive effect on the dynamics of the game. Also, on the post-war tanks of all countries, systems for setting smoke screens were installed, which can give a second chance to a player who made a mistake.

There are already tanks of the post-war era in the game, up to individual vehicles of the 80s (Japanese ZSU Type-87), while at the fifth rank there are vehicles whose production year differs by 30-40 years. The use of post-war vehicles with their division by rank will make the higher levels of research branches more logical and balanced. Therefore, from the point of view of the development of the player's progress, it is logical not to be limited to individual tanks, but to use all the vehicles that meet the conditions for an interesting gameplay.

Our plans

  • We plan to add a new, sixth rank in the development of ground vehicles, and we will start filling it with those vehicles that were representatives of the second post-war generation of tanks - such as the Soviet T-64, the American experimental MBT-70, etc.
  • We will consistently, from patch to patch, fill the new rank with interesting and well-known vehicles (not limited to MBTs) of all nations available in our game.
  • The economy of the game was not originally designed for six ranks, so the technique of the new rank in this regard will not directly follow the rules established earlier. In other words, when moving from rank 5 to rank 6, there will be no sharp increase in the cost of vehicles in the OP and Lions, unlike when moving from, say, rank 4 to rank 5. The cost of researching and purchasing vehicles and modules, as well as the cost of consumables and repairs at rank 6 will not differ much from similar characteristics of rank 5 vehicles. Moreover, later, when a sufficient number of vehicles of rank 6 appear, we plan to reduce the cost of researching and purchasing vehicles at rank 5 (and possibly at lower ranks) so that the time for players to reach the top vehicle remains approximately the same as before entering the 6th rank.

Questions and answers

- Will there be Abrams / T-90 / Leopard 2 and other modern cars?

Over time, we do not rule out the appearance in our game of any modern tanks from among those that we can model with the degree of detailing of appearance and combat capabilities that suits us.

- Will there be thermal imagers / night vision devices?

We will decide after creating prototypes and gameplay tests of night battles with similar devices.

Attack aircraft of rank VI can also be represented by helicopters, which have quite interesting gameplay in joint battles. So far, a specific answer to this question and the actual list of attack aircraft have not been finalized, and not all internal tests have been carried out.

— Is it planned to introduce modern aircraft?

Unlike tanks, as aviation develops, air combat becomes more hardcore, less spectacular, and reveals less and less aerobatic skills. This can be seen even in the example of the Korean War jet aircraft, presented in our game from the very beginning. But the tactics of air combat are especially changed by missiles with seeker, which do not require escort after launch. While out of visual range missile combat can be gameplay interesting, it's entirely instrument-focused and very hardcore (because it requires specialized knowledge and a lot of "head-playing" with no decision feedback). Therefore, to make the battle of modern aviation interesting, accessible, non-hardcore (i.e., understandable enough for a player without special training), while at the same time maintaining the level of realism set in the game, is an extremely difficult task (if at all possible). Therefore, most likely, the tank and aircraft components of the game will differ greatly in terms of the time period of the vehicles presented.

However, we plan to first internally test the gameplay of jets from the Vietnam War, which used the first guided missiles. These missiles had a lot of restrictions on launch conditions (angle and, most importantly, maximum and minimum distances to the target), and their maneuverability characteristics were not as high as those of modern missiles. Therefore, speaking with great caution, we can assume that over time this stage of aviation development will find its embodiment in War Thunder.

- Are there any plans to change the BR of vehicles at rank five with the introduction of the sixth?

Yes, most likely some of the rank V tanks (for example, ATGM carriers) will receive a new BR, and some of the tanks already in the game will probably move to rank VI. Only this will not happen immediately with the release of the patch, but after a while, sufficient to collect statistics.

- Should we expect the introduction of chips, such as remote sensing, on vehicles already in the game?

You need to understand that the presence of such protection, both passive (T-62M) and mounted DZ, will increase the effectiveness of the tank, so the introduction of such modifications will be carried out for balance reasons, with a concomitant increase in the Battle Rating.

— Should we expect the appearance of premium rank V vehicles, since it is no longer the top one? What will happen to the bonuses of rank IV premium vehicles for upgrading a new top rank?

We do not rule out the appearance of premium rank V vehicles. The bonus to the reward for premium vehicles of rank IV when upgrading vehicles to VI will work in the same way as it works now when upgrading vehicles by 2 or more ranks higher, i.e. with a fine.

— Tanks of rank VI will appear immediately with the release of patch 1.71, or will there be CBT first?

The vehicles will be available for research immediately after the release of update 1.71.

— Will rank VI tanks be added for other countries?

All nations that have their own ground vehicle research tree will receive rank VI vehicles. We will add tanks from other countries to the game as soon as they are ready.
