Introduction

People often ask me: why did I go to work for the CIA? The answer must be sought in childhood. While others ran after the girls, I rushed through the forest with a blowgun at the ready (or built a grenade launcher from a polyethylene pipe - potatoes served as projectiles). I was an exemplary Boy Scout and even reached the highest Boy Scout rank - Eagle. I was ready, always ready for adventure and struggle. As an adult, I realized that a “normal” job was not for me, and after college I joined the police. Soon both the Secret Service and the CIA took notice of me. The CIA offer seemed more exciting to me, and I accepted it.

After leaving the CIA, I became a freelancer, started a family, and see my destiny in sharing vital knowledge. This desire led to the fact that in 2010 I opened my own school called Spy Tricks and Tricks. Over the years, I have successfully taught these techniques to thousands of people around the world. Among them were corporate executives, celebrities, security professionals, successful businessmen, housewives and students. And then I realized that this was not enough and that I should bring my knowledge to as many people as possible who care about their own safety and the safety of their families. I hope this book will prove that you don't have to be a professional spy to be safe in this complex and rather dangerous world. You just have to do what I do - trying not to lose a sense of humor! - I advise you to train. My tricks have already helped the most ordinary people to avoid kidnapping, gangster attacks, car theft, they scared the robbers away from the house. Here are just a few examples.

Amy O. from Virginia knew exactly what to do when she realized someone was following her while jogging.

Jared L. knew how to behave when he was attacked in the elevator in which he was rising from the underground parking.

Dan P. from Los Angeles said that after classes at my school, he managed to scare off a clearly dangerous stranger who approached his car in the parking lot near the airport.

Gary S., a company vice president who travels eleven months a year on business, avoided two robbery attempts in China.

Heather M. from Sarasota managed to use a tactical pen when two men tried to kidnap her at a gas station.

Dennis R. from Texas was able, using the tactics he learned at my school, to repel an attack on his house.

These people survived dangerous and even deadly situations because they knew exactly what to do. They did not become victims because they responded to the threat with the techniques they learned in my courses. And my goal is that after reading this book, you will become strong and confident and know how to deal with emergencies that may be faced by yourself and those you love.

Chapter 1
The Logic of Survival

You are on the threshold of amazing discoveries. When you read this book, you will know how to get out of the ropes (if you were tied up) or get rid of the duct tape, how to determine that you are being deceived or trying to drag you into something dubious by talking. But the skills you learn are nothing without what I call "survival logic." Simply put, the logic of survival is the belief that you know how to respond to any emergency. Confidence that you are able to quickly and intelligently respond to a crisis with the help of available means. Confidence that you are ready to ensure the safety of the family. I believe that the logic of survival is as important as the skills that I am willing to teach you, and therefore I have formulated seven simple rules that will help you acquire them. Following these rules, you will become a real protector of your loved ones and will be able to stand up for yourself.

Throughout the book, I will constantly remind you of them, because I firmly believe that these rules help to avoid tragedies. You will also see that to illustrate how different tactics and techniques can be used, I give examples, talk about what happened in different parts of the world. As you read these stories, you will find yourself thinking, “What were they thinking? How did they not notice this? I hope that thanks to these basic rules you will never ask yourself the question: “How did I not notice this?” That you will be able to act quickly and adequately in any dangerous situation.

Rule 1. Practical application

Life is rarely simple and clear. My training as a spy has taught me that no matter how well you know what to do in an emergency, the only thing that will save you is the ability to adapt this knowledge to the circumstances. As you learn different tricks, remember: your ability to put them into practice- that's what matters. In life, not everything always goes as planned, and the most important thing is to be ready to solve the problems it throws up with the help of what is at hand. This rule is good because it is easy to follow. You can be a brave, strong, influential person, but all these wonderful qualities are unlikely to help if you are unable to adapt to new and potentially dangerous situations. Try to cultivate in yourself the ability to change, adapt, put into practice your skills.

Rule 2: Believe in yourself

I am one of those who believe that faith in yourself is the most important thing. I simply do not want my family or myself to rely on someone, to depend on someone. Personal responsibility and self-confidence is the highest value. This is what should be your philosophy. In this book, you will find many examples of how situations ended tragically precisely because of the lack of faith in oneself, but the tragedy could have been avoided! I hope readers will understand the importance of believing in oneself and the ability to act independently in difficult situations. Having the means at hand and being able to stand up for yourself are equally important to survival.

Believing in yourself = Helping others

There is no error in this formula. Yes, I believe that believing in yourself is a key quality when it comes to survival, but it has value for other reasons as well. As soon as we gain faith in ourselves, we automatically become the person who is able to help others. I hope that the skills you learn in this book, coupled with the confidence, will turn you into someone who is always there to help you in an emergency.

Rule 3: Don't be a hero

Let me be clear. This rule does not call for giving up in difficult situations or not trying to be a valuable, useful member of society. This rule speaks of common sense, that it is better to leave confrontations - even if you oppose such a decision in your soul. Believe me, I know how difficult it can be. Once - it was in Baltimore - I was doing a morning jog. I was running towards the harbor and suddenly I saw that two people were walking ahead of me on the sidewalk. I was in a tracksuit and sneakers, they were also dressed very formally, which, you see, is a bit strange for six in the morning. When I overtook the strangers, I saw that they looked at each other and parted, as if inviting me to run between them. If I accept their invitation, it is not known what could have come of this. I made a decision in favor of safety: I ran to the other side of the street, while maintaining eye contact and making it clear that I was on the alert. Perhaps they didn't mean anything bad. Or perhaps they were waiting around the corner for six strong homies ready to rob me. I mean, I didn't let my ego get the better of me. I did not need to rush into the passage between them, to prove to myself that I was a desperate daredevil (soon you will find out why I was looking at them - this is important).

Here's another example: some drunken idiot hit me at a gas station. Later, he began to apologize in a slurred tongue: he decided that I was his friend, because a friend had exactly the same car. My answer? "No problem. Everything is good". I could have said something harsh to him, but I was smart enough to understand that there really was no problem and that this whole story was not worth a damn.

Believe me, the toughest and most trained guys I met in the CIA were also the most quiet and calm. They were confident in themselves, and they did not need to demonstrate what they were capable of. I'm smart enough to understand that you don't need to escalate the situation. I'm smart enough to know that I might run into a guy who's far better prepared than me, or someone who's lucky today. Feel the power in yourself, understand that you can do something, master new skills, but remember: the acquired power and skills must be used wisely.

Rule 4. Movement is life

I'm not the first person you hear the phrase "Movement is life" from. Next, I will talk about situations where it was those who moved who survived. That is, they literally ran away from death, from the line of fire. This is an important but ambiguous concept, and I will talk about it in detail in later chapters. Here I will give the most primitive example. Suppose someone approaches you with a knife. You need to immediately make one of two decisions - either run away or run into a knife. I am deliberately simplifying the situation because I want you to understand that the right decision is to run away. There are other aspects to this concept as well - for example, you will be amazed to learn that people often die in plane crashes not because the plane ended up on the ground, but because they inhaled poisonous smoke. Some are so paralyzed by fear that, after surviving a plane crash, they continue to sit with their seat belts fastened, because they remember: this is the first means of safety. And those who, having unfastened the belt, survive, are moving. They do not freeze in horror, they tend to run away as soon as possible, to get out of the burning plane. You must remember this in any dangerous situation, be it a hurricane, a plane crash or a terrorist attack: movement is life.

Rule 5. The main thing is the overall impression

Some of my secrets are so simple and unpretentious that you can put the book down right now and in a few seconds completely change your life, making it much safer. And all because of the overall impression. I'm going to teach you some tricks that will help you create a certain impression, like that you're not the type to mess with, or that your house is the most secure on the block and that it's best for criminals to stay away from it. But in order to perform the physical and psychological tricks that I intend to teach you, you must be clear about the impression you and others are making right now. Ask yourself the following questions: Do I look like a victim? And my house - does it look like no one lives in it? How do I move - confidently or not? What impression do those around you make? That guy in the restaurant - does he look suspicious? And that person who passed me in the supermarket is following me? Understanding the impression others make, and the ability to make a certain impression yourself, play a key role in the art of security.

Rule 6. Understanding the norm

This is the key concept of all intelligence activities. You are simply not able to assess the extent to which a situation is dangerous if you do not know what is normal, habitual for a given place. Is this street always so crowded? Is this noise level normal? Or is something strange going on? If you do not understand what is normal for your home, your neighborhood, where you work, you will not understand that you are in danger and it is time to take immediate action. The ability to define benchmarks, to understand what is the norm, is a key component of any intelligence activity. And I'm going to show you clearly and in detail how it's done.

Rule 7: Always stay situationally aware

This last rule is the cornerstone of my philosophy. If you don't practice situational awareness (that is, you don't have knowledge of the situation), no amount of training will help you. I insist on this to such an extent that I devoted the first chapter of the book specifically to situational awareness, and I am sure that the main thing that I learned during my time at the CIA is to always keep the focus of attention on what is happening around me. Remember once and for all: nothing that I will teach you will save you if you do not clearly see what is happening around. If you have buried your nose in a smartphone or, walking down the street, are carried away by a conversation, then even after studying all my recommendations, you will not notice that you are being watched. Next, you will read about senseless tragedies that could have been avoided if their participants had maintained situational awareness. Understand, I am not imposing paranoia on you - I am just calling for a healthy attention to the surrounding reality. Situational awareness is what helps you avoid an attack by simply crossing the street. It takes some practice and determination, but it is quite possible to achieve such an understanding of reality, and it can save your life.

Life is safe and happy

I am writing this book and teaching the Spy Tricks and Tricks course to help people live safer and happier lives. The seven rules we talked about above, combined with the self-defense techniques discussed below, will help you subdue your own fears and worries. We live in frightening and unpredictable times, but I believe that you will get rid of your fears. Knowledge, skills and confidence - that's what allows you to cope with any situation.

Chapter 2
situational awareness
The main thing they taught me at the CIA

Masked men armed with machetes rob an expensive Mexican restaurant in Manhattan. Frightened waiters huddle against the walls, visitors froze at the tables, and only one person at the bar remains completely calm, not noticing what is happening around. The robbers run behind the bar in search of cash, and he not only continues to look for something there on the screen of his cell phone, but also raises an empty glass, making it clear that he would like to drink more. And then he moves to another stool to give way to the robber ... Later, this man told the police that he "did not see anything" because he "was looking at the phone all the time." Managing to miss a robbery a meter away from you is the clearest example of the striking absence of what is called situational awareness.

People are often surprised when I say that situational awareness is the most important thing I learned at the CIA. CIA agents receive the best training in the world: they are able to repel any attack, break free in a few seconds, they masterly drive cars and can avoid any chase, but situational awareness is the agent’s main tool for survival. We also know that the best way to win a duel is to not fight at all. It is the understanding of the situation, its vision, awareness of it that allows us to take the necessary actions. even before how the crisis unfolds. And if it comes to weapons, then we missed something, then our situational awareness was not up to par.

This skill is also necessary in civilian life, as I had a chance to see from my own experience. I met my future wife when she was in law school in Baltimore. This school was located in an area that was not exactly dangerous, but not entirely prosperous - recently, for example, someone was stabbed to death on a nearby bridge. Therefore, I did not want her to go there alone after evening classes, and I always met her. But we got into trouble just in broad daylight. That autumn day was just amazing, so I decided to pick up my wife and walk to a restaurant in the inner harbor - one of the most wonderful places in the city. On the way, I noticed a man who was behaving strangely. He crossed several times from one side of the street to the other and kept looking at me, so it was not surprising that I felt something was wrong. My wife and I stopped at the crossing - we waited for the green light to turn on. That person stopped a meter away from me. I followed him out of the corner of my eye, especially the hands, because it is the hands that kill. A knife or a pistol may appear in the hands, and fists are also weapons. When the green light came on, I deliberately went slowly. The man was also in no hurry, walking step by step with me. By this point, I had already taken out my tactical pen. After taking three steps, I turned to him and said: “Excuse me, can you tell me what time it is?” He looked at me in surprise, and I repeated: “Excuse me, do you know what time it is?” He replied: "Four thirty ..." We looked into each other's eyes for a second, but this second seemed like an eternity to me. Suddenly he turned around and quickly walked away. Since then I have not seen him again.

By asking him what time it is, I accomplished two things. First, completely eliminated the moment of surprise. My hands were free, so that if necessary I could strike or disarm him. Secondly, I know that the typical human reaction time is about one and a half seconds. That is at least as much as you need to respond to the situation. If he had attacked me, it would have taken me a second and a half to defend myself and my wife. The stranger answered my question - said what time it was, then instantly turned around and walked away (this is what proves that he was up to something evil). If he had not planned anything bad, he would have continued on his way in the same direction - to the inner harbor.

The criminals don't want those they target to know about their plans. But I knew. And when he realized that I knew, he preferred to hide. By being attentive to my surroundings, I was able to determine that my wife and I were in danger and was able to take action in response. In principle, this situation could be resolved in other ways, and there are many of these methods, but the main thing is that I did at least something. I trusted my instincts and reacted. But if I was staring at a cell phone, everything could end in a skirmish with a robber.

The concept of "situational awareness" (Situational Awareness) was formed in the United States at the turn of the 1990s. The Pentagon’s definition of “situational awareness” states: “Situational Awareness is knowledge and understanding of the current situation, facilitating regular, adequate and accurate assessment of operations conducted in the theater of war by oneself, by the enemy or by a third party in order to ensure the development and adoption of decisions. Point of view and skills that stimulate the ability to quickly determine the context and significance of identified events. Note. transl.

This book immediately attracted me, because I love and respect the special services, and I also want to be sure that I can always protect myself. And if you think that you do not need it, then no, you are mistaken, you SHOULD. The knowledge that is presented in this book is indispensable for everyone who wants to live. And it is important to understand that no one is immune from some emergency situations. This book teaches you to avoid them, and if it doesn't work out, then quickly and effectively extricate yourself from them.

This is the rare case when the abstract does not lie. The author will teach you to recognize danger and evaluate it objectively, to repel an attack while traveling, in everyday life, on the street, in a car, at home, to prevent an attack or robbery, to get out of ropes, cables, adhesive tape, handcuffs, car trunk, what is the minimum set of inexpensive items you need you should have with you (and where exactly) in order to survive or be able to repel a blow if something happens, what actions should be taken if you are grabbed by the hair or behind your back, and what to do if your car was stolen.

What I listed above is really in the book. And much more detailed than you might expect, and in insanely simple and concise language. This man served in the CIA, and as you read it, you can immediately see that this is true, because he is ready for anything. Even if you didn't know where he came from and what he did, it's not hard to trace, because this person is prepared differently from ordinary people. And in vain, because the things he teaches are not at all complicated, but insanely useful.

He doesn't tell you to buy some superfood gadgets or something like that. Everything he describes is cheap, easy and available. If anything, he offers options for replacing these items with others, and if you don’t have the same paracord to untangle the ropes, he will definitely write an option on how you can get out of them absolutely without anything.

Let some of the means seem too expensive or strange to you, for example, Jason himself wears bulletproof fabric inside a laptop bag, but it is important to understand that this is his forced measure, and he repeatedly mentions that he does not encourage you to run and buy everything that he listed for everyday storage in the car. You must read, analyze and choose things for yourself. You are not a former CIA agent and hardly need daily protection from an unscheduled execution, so even if you do not have this bulletproof matter, Jason shows you another way to escape.
Yes, and the "body armor" for the bag is a single example, you already keep everything else at home, so what prevents you from throwing a pair of invisible hairpins into your pocket?

Along the way, the author gives examples from his life or some well-known court cases that people in America have heard a lot about, but our people hardly know. And I, since I am distinguished by the strongest curiosity, every time I sat and wool these cases on the Internet, because it was not enough for me to know what method the criminal used and how to act so as not to fall under his action, I was interested and how everything ended up ended. So if you're that curious, don't close the Wikipedia tab, it'll come in handy for a concise study of the US criminal past.
And do not forget about the numerous statistics and less well-known, but no less interesting stories of ordinary people.

This book has literally EVERYTHING. Therefore, this information must either be written out or bought a book and used as a desktop. You need to refresh this data constantly, because sometimes your life can depend on it.
For example, I don't need to be taught to always be situational aware and keep an eye on the events around me, so I would re-read chapters on escaping from ropes/handcuffs, information on parrying certain blows, and tricks of deception.

Surprisingly, here you can get instructions not only on how to protect your car from theft, but also the process of theft itself, because the author does not exclude the possibility that someday it will be vital for you, and takes on such a responsibility to teach you this and for example, how to hide without a trace so that even the state does not find you (I think you can definitely trust him in such matters). At the same time, of course, he will warn you that you will lose and gain, so in my opinion you should think twice here - whether you run away from your husband or not, because in another life you will have to become a completely different person and give up everything that you loved and taken for granted.

There is no unnecessary information here. I can't get a license now because of my age, but even I need to know how to escape from the chase on the road or what to do if something happens to the driver of the car. Because you never know what might happen to you. Or maybe anything. It is for this purpose that you need to read the book - in order to protect yourself from such cases as much as possible and be able to protect yourself.

I really liked the book - it goes easily, interestingly and talks about things that everyone should know and remember. I advise everyone without exception - even if by some chance you don’t like the syllable, God forbid, then shove this book into yourself by force, as compulsory educational school literature, because this is not taught at school and in foreign courses. This is a school of life, and God forbid someone learn all this by their own example. You have a chance to learn other people's mistakes and take note of them. Do not miss it, the book is worthwhile and really must read.

Danger awaits a person at every step. You cannot be sure that you, your family, home and car are 100% protected. And even in the most peaceful time, it is necessary to remain vigilant, because there are more and more intruders every year. How to protect yourself from them in a world where there is practically nowhere to hide? Jason Hanson will share his professional experience with the reader, and his book “Protect Yourself Using Secret Service Methods. Former Special Agent Reveals Techniques That Can Save Your and Your Family's Life" will be a real practical guide to self-defense for everyone.
