About the university

Mari State University is one of the young classical universities in the country, a major educational and scientific center of the Republic of Mari El and the Volga Federal District.
On May 4, 1971, the Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the RSFSR V.N. Stoletov signed an order to organize a university in Yoshkar-Ola, designed to fill the acute shortage of personnel for the intensively developing leading sectors of the national economy of the republic: industry, construction and agriculture.
Mari State University celebrated its 35th anniversary as a recognized center of education, science and culture. It has eight faculties, three institutes, more than 8,000 students, a highly professional team of professors, associate professors and researchers, numbering more than 700 teachers, including 75 doctors of science and almost 360 candidates of science.
Currently, the university trains personnel in nine areas: physical and mathematical sciences; natural Sciences; humanitarian sciences; education and pedagogy; Culture and art; economics and Management; agriculture and fisheries; energy, power engineering and electrical engineering; technology of food products and consumer goods. The university has established a multi-stage system of personnel training based on the implementation of programs:
secondary general and vocational education - through multidisciplinary and polytechnical lyceums, a boarding school for gifted children, a linguistic school, specialized classes in schools of the republic and a college of MarSU;
higher professional education, carried out in two areas of bachelor's degree and 35 specialties;
postgraduate education - through postgraduate and doctoral studies;
additional education - through the Institute of Open Education and Information Systems, the Regional Center for Advanced Studies and Training, the Center for Economic Research, the Russian-American Center, etc.
The university trains teachers in the field of innovative pedagogical, information and communication technologies, the Presidential program of professional training of managerial personnel is being implemented in a consortium with MESI.
A solid scientific potential has been created at the university. Scientific research is carried out in 14 areas of humanitarian, natural-mathematical and technical profiles. Total research funding has doubled in recent years; more than half of the funds go to fundamental R&D; research is being carried out on grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Humanitarian Foundation, local grants and economic agreements. Research work is carried out on more than 60 topics on the basis of departments, 13 laboratories and 9 research centers. In recent years, an average of 22 monographs, 17 collections of scientific papers, 64 textbooks and teaching aids have been published annually. University scientists became laureates of international, all-Russian and republican competitions for the best scientific and educational book. Among the scientific community, the yearbooks "Mari Archaeographic Bulletin" and "Mari Legal Bulletin", published by the Historical-Philological and Law Faculties, enjoy authority.
The training of scientific personnel is carried out in 38 specialties in graduate school and in 7 - in doctoral studies; there are two doctoral dissertation councils. MarSU is a co-founder of three joint specialized councils. About 15 scientific conferences are held annually, including international and all-Russian ones.
Every year, the role of the university in shaping a policy aimed at the accelerated development of higher education in the republic, the Volga Federal District, and the country is increasing. MarSU is one of the main organizers of the work of the Council of Rectors of the Mari El Republic, a member of the Volga and Eurasian associations of universities. In the fall of 2005, MarSU was included in the Association of Classical Universities of Russia, the criteria for admission to which significantly exceed those established during the certification of the university. This is a great success of the university staff, high recognition of its merits.
The university is a recognized center of Finno-Ugric studies, which forms a tolerant relationship between peoples, countries and states. Occupying a leading position in the world Finno-Ugric studies, the university has established particularly close contacts with foreign Finno-Ugric scientific and educational centers in Finland, Estonia, Hungary, with the society of M. Kastren (Finland).
