Vladimir Petrovich Kozlov is a specialist in the field of studying the patterns of interaction between society and a historical source, problems of archiving. Of great importance are his studies related to the remarkable monument of Russian literature - "The Tale of Igor's Campaign", around which fierce disputes have been going on for centuries. He is credited with the discovery of the first, currently the earliest news about this monument and other important archival finds that provided new opportunities for studying the Lay.

V.P. Kozlov was attracted by the study of both monumental historical sources and the brightest personalities of Russian historians. His works speak best of all about the historian. In 1988, a facsimile reproduction of the most famous pre-revolutionary edition of N.M. Karamzin 1842-1843, prepared jointly with Academician D.S. Likhachev and S.O. Schmidt. As a result of the preparation of the first reprint edition, the following monograph by V.P. Kozlov "History of the Russian State" N.M. Karamzin in the assessments of contemporaries" (1989). Independent scientific assessment of V.P. Kozlov of Karamzin's historical concept, his contribution to domestic historiography and source studies, contributed to overcoming schematic, vulgar ideas about the views and work of the great historian.

In 1994, his next monograph “Secrets of falsification. Analysis of forgeries of historical sources of the 18th-19th centuries”, republished in 1996, and “Deceived but triumphant Clio. Forgery of Written Sources on Russian History of the 20th Century" (2001), which for the first time proposed a typology and classification of forgeries of historical documents, developed on the basis of studying their huge complex for the period from the 10th to the 20th century, starting with the famous "Veles Book" and ending with the minutes of the meetings Politburo of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks.

Introduction

This book is a continuation of the author's published work on the history of falsification of Russian written historical sources in the 18th - first half of the 19th centuries. With its release, the first consolidated attempt is completed to trace the history of this peculiar international phenomenon in public life on Russian material, to identify the patterns and features of its development, circumstances, motives, the technique of making forgeries, their impact on the minds and feelings of Russians, to determine the main typological features of forgeries that have always distinct parameters of socio-political, historiographical, cultural significance.

The author strove to preserve and make full use of all the methods of storytelling and analysis of falsifications that he had applied in his previous work. However, to some extent, unexpectedly for himself, he encountered a number of such moments that forced him to make a number of adjustments to this methodology. Firstly, an insignificant amount of serious literature devoted to individual falsifications of historical sources of the 20th century was revealed. or to some groups of them, as well as to the authors of falsifications, there is no clear idea of their general corpus. Secondly, the idea of distinguishing forgery of documents and forgery of historical sources, postulated in the introduction to the first book, which was quite easily implemented in relation to falsifications in the 18th-19th centuries, met with certain difficulties in relation to the material of the 20th century, especially as the story approached the present. Thirdly, the very procedure for exposing forgeries and establishing the history of their existence becomes more complicated due to the frequent cases of the international composition of their "groups of authors." Fourth, in the 20th century, we are less and less likely to encounter falsification of historical sources in the name of proving certain historical ideas and concepts - more and more often forgeries pursued openly political goals, some state interests, often coming out of the bowels of the secret services. Traces of many falsifications lead exactly here, but access to their archival materials is not always possible.

Partly for this reason, the book does not cover all forgeries of historical sources relating to Russia, made in Russia and abroad during the 20th century. Who knows, perhaps the researchers of the future will discover many new forgeries among those documents that today are recognized as authentic and reliable. The sophistication of the technology of forgeries, often made by specialized government agencies, is a good reason for such a suspicious assumption.

In this book, as in the previous one, the reader will get acquainted with sensational and little-known falsifications, executed with a high degree of technical and substantive sophistication and hastily and primitively, counting on a momentary deafening effect, with forgeries exposed almost immediately after being introduced into public circulation and living on this day, exciting the imagination of the layman. But as before, in every plan of falsification, a certain "interest" is quite clearly traced - from the primitive and vile to the fanatically noble. Exposing forgeries is remarkable precisely by revealing this "interest", it makes it possible to immediately put them in the general context of the social movements of their time, to get a more voluminous idea of their obvious and hidden motives. Falsifications always sharpen our understanding of known historical phenomena, events, actions and thoughts of people, allowing us to reveal additional features of their characteristics. Forgeries, like in a drop of water, reflect not only historical processes, the modern time of their manufacture, but in the case of resuscitation of falsifications even after exposure - modern and periods of their existence, an unexpected "return" from non-existence.

In historiographical terms, the history of falsifications of Russian written historical sources in the XX century. poorly developed. Even an analysis of outright anti-communist and anti-Soviet forgeries we rarely find in Soviet historical literature, as well as in foreign literature, by the way. It is amazing that a number of such forgeries were not only simply ignored, but the knowledge about them was hidden in special stores. The fact is that many of the forgeries dealt with the most acute problems of Russian history, often interpreting them not at all in the spirit of official Soviet historiography. The fear of the aggravation of historical knowledge, the emergence of some alternative historical conclusions and concepts, forced us to keep silent about falsifications.

Nevertheless, a number of forgeries had a significant historiographical tradition. For example, a special (and the only one in Soviet historiography of forgery) book published in 1926 was devoted to the falsification of documents related to the activities of the Comintern. the fact that it was published by the publishing house of the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs) leaves an ambiguous impression. Undoubtedly, this is the first most complete set of falsifications, with a fairly detailed analysis of them, falsifications that appeared in the West in the first half of the twenties as a result of the ideological and political confrontation that flared up. The author, obviously an employee of the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs, managed to do a great job of identifying forgeries, systematizing them and attributing them to one or another, as he writes, "factory" of anti-Soviet fakes that existed in the West. The author of the book managed to establish several such, with the techniques and techniques for making forgeries inherent in each of them.

On the other hand, the book turned out to be sharply polemical. It fully reflected and conveys the atmosphere of the ideological and political battles of the mid-twenties. The just spirit of exposing forgeries and righteous anger against the use of such unworthy methods for political purposes clearly prevented the author from presenting the full range of motives that led to the manufacture of certain forgeries.

Falsifications were subjected to serious scientific analysis, in which B. Shergin and K. Badigin, Vlesov's book, Vyrubova's "Diary", "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" were involved. For a number of other forgeries, there is, as a rule, literature that promptly reacted to them in the form of newspaper and magazine notes, almost always demonstratively showing their falsified nature.

The general sophistication of the 20th century can hardly cause anyone to doubt. The history of falsifications in this sense is no exception. The scale of the forgery, as well as the events and persons to whom they were dedicated, often corresponded to the scale of the events and activities of the persons who turned out to be a rich century. Suffice it to recall the falsification of Hitler's diary that struck the world. However, opposite phenomena also differed on the same scale. In this regard, one cannot fail to recall the denial by the Soviet leadership of the authenticity of the Molotov-Ribbentrop protocols on the division of spheres of influence on the eve of World War II and the many years of efforts by Soviet historians to prove their falsity. One can also recall the primitive, but full of delightful persistence, aspirations to prove the forged nature of the documents related to the destruction of Polish prisoners of war in 1940 by decision of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks.

The author does not dare to claim that this book contains the most characteristic falsifications. Rather, on the contrary, although the author tried to identify the typology of forgeries, he still had in mind to tell only about those falsifications that, due to circumstances, fell into the field of his search.
