There are three types of checks: for an unstressed checked, unchecked or alternating root vowel.

For example, the letter combination MOUNTAIN is found in thousands of words, is the root in the words BURN, GORE, MOUNTAIN and related to them. But this is not the same root, but different ones, because according to the meaning of the word BURN, GREET, MOUNTAIN have nothing in common. This fact plays a huge role in writing roots with an unstressed vowel.
