What do you need to get into acting school? How to enter the theater institute (university, college)? A case from one's life

The question of how to enter a theater university is more often of concern to girls, therefore, during the entrance auditions, it turns out that up to 200 people apply for one place. There are much fewer young men who want to become actors, most likely due to less emotionality and a penchant for acting. The leading teacher of the future course almost always recruits girls and boys equally, so it is easier for young people to enter.

To begin with, let us explain how the word "school" in relation to a theatrical institution does not always mean specialized secondary education. Much more often a school in this environment is called an institute, therefore, when doing, always pay attention to the full name of the institution. If you decide to devote yourself to the acting profession after the 9th grade, then look for an institution that really is a school. And the famous "Shchukinskoye" or "Schepkinskoye" are institutions.

How to prepare for admission

How to prepare for the delivery of general education subjects, teachers at school will tell you. Your personal task is to prepare and successfully pass the creative competition. It includes the reading of a fable, a poem, a prose passage, the performance of a song, a dance. Some theatrical universities are asked to show plastic compositions, elements of acrobatics. You need to be ready for any task.

Start by choosing books to read. All literary passages are selected not in terms of brightness and popularity, you need to choose what is right for you. If you are a flamboyant and impulsive person, then it is better to read an excerpt from Pippi Longstocking, and not pretend to be Katerina from The Thunderstorm. And it is best to prepare a few fables, poems and prose passages, as something specific may not please the commission, and you will be asked to read another work, which happens very often. Also prepare a few dances and songs.

To enter the theater school, it is also important to learn how to show sketches. An etude is a small sketch on a given topic, which, as a rule, is determined by the examiners. For example, you will be asked to show how you missed the train, how you received a letter with the news of admission to the theater institute, how you tore your favorite dress. Try to identify a few of these topics for yourself at home and rehearse the etudes. The main thing is to develop the ability to quickly and accurately respond to the proposed circumstances, to include sincere emotions, not to play.

  • Start preparing not a month before the exams, not even six months. A year is the most optimal period for searching, disassembling material, for rehearsals.
  • Find a person who is a professional and has already helped more than one beginner to enter a theater university. An experienced actor or director will charge you a certain amount for their lessons, but you need them to greatly increase the chances of successfully passing creative tests.
  • If there is a theater university in your city, then preparatory courses will work with it. Be sure to sign up for them and prove yourself in the classroom as a bright and energetic applicant.
  • To enter a theater institute, you need to read a lot of literature on the history of the theater - this knowledge will be useful to you at the colloquium, which is arranged before creative tours in many universities. In addition, you will need to provide the results of the Unified State Examination in Russian Language and Literature.

How to enter a theater university or a higher school is a question that torments thousands of talented people who seek to realize their creative potential on the stages of great theaters and cinema. However, this is a very difficult task that requires complete dedication and the realization that even the most famous artists did not pass the competition the first time. Admission to the theater institute is completely different from admission to any other university. USE scores play the last role here, since the main attention is paid to the results of creative exams. What should the applicant impress his examiners with?

Criteria for the selection of candidates for a theater university

What do you need to enter the theater and what qualities should an applicant have? During the creative competition, teachers evaluate applicants according to a number of basic parameters, including:

  1. Education. Only applicants who have completed 11 classes or graduates of technical schools and colleges can enter the theater university.
  2. Age. As a rule, age does not matter, but still, most often, examiners prefer the younger generation.
  3. External Data. This is one of the most important criteria, which does not imply a beautiful face. The future actor must have a bright, memorable appearance, have his own zest, capable of striking the hearts of the audience. It can be a kind of facial expressions, or a deep penetrating look, or the funny features inherent in a comedian.
  4. stage charm. Also, it should not be confused with appearance and beauty. This concept means that charisma and talent, thanks to which people are interested in watching the artist, admiring him. It is due to these qualities that an applicant can establish himself as a promising actor.
  5. Sense of rhythm. It is known that an actor must be talented in absolutely any direction. On stage, he has to sing and participate in dance numbers, so the future artist is unthinkable without a sense of rhythm, which is also very important for setting the right diction.
  6. Inner emotionality. Here, teachers assess the ability of the applicant to touch the viewer with his game, to cause an emotional outburst and mixed feelings in him, to make him believe in the reality of what is happening.

If you meet these criteria, then your chances of entering an acting school at a theater university increase significantly. However, it is important to remember that many talented individuals are eliminated in creative competitions, so be prepared for the fact that you will have to prove your skills more than once.

Qualifying rounds for admission

To understand how to enter a theater higher school, it is necessary to analyze the examination procedure, which consists of three stages.

First stage

You need to pass the Unified State Examination and submit its results to the admission committee of the university. For admission to the theatrical compulsory subjects are the Russian language and literature.

Second phase

At this stage, you will have to pass an internal test colloquium, which is an interview in which you will be asked various questions, for example, such as:

  1. Why do you want to go to theater school?
  2. Do you understand the essence of the profession?
  3. Why did you decide to become an artist?
  4. What kind of actor do you see yourself as?

It is necessary to briefly tell about yourself, about your childhood and adolescence, about how you realized your need for creativity. The main purpose of such a procedure is to reveal not so much cultural and art history knowledge as the moral and ethical aspects of the applicant.

Third stage

You will be asked to pass three creative tests, which are the most important stage in admission to the theater. When making their verdict, the examiners are primarily guided by the results of this particular test, which includes three tasks:

  • speech,
  • acting,
  • dancing and vocals.

Consider each of the creative exams in more detail:

  1. Speech. For this test, the applicant must prepare and memorize several passages from prose, fable, play or poem. During the exam, you will be asked to recite a passage of your choice, but teachers may not like the passage you are reading. It is for this that it is worth preparing several works at once, in order to read out another piece if necessary. Here your diction, voice, ability to present material to the viewer is tested.
  2. Acting. This test involves staging an etude: usually 2-3 people take part in it. The commission allows any themes for sketches, that is, you can use both a plot from a famous work and a situation from everyday life.
  3. Dances and vocals. Applicants must prepare vocal and dance numbers in advance. For the song exam, it is best to choose a classic romance or a famous work from Soviet cinema. The experience of former applicants shows that the commission is skeptical about the modern repertoire. You also need to come up with a dance number in advance.

So, the exam, an interview and three creative exams, this is what you need to enter the theater for acting.

How to become a director

The process of admission to the directing department is somewhat different from the acting department. Future directors are invited to go through five stages:

Exams in such disciplines as literature and the Russian language (USE format).

  1. Acting(practical test). At this stage, the applicant must read several works of various orientations. It also tests improvisational skills for playing stage etudes, a sense of rhythm and musicality.
  2. Practical directing. Applicants must put a sketch on the proposed topic. The theme can be a classical piece or a musical sketch. Applicants-actors take part in an impromptu production. On this test, the commission tests the ingenuity, initiative, taste and imagination of future directors.
  3. Paperwork. The topic of this assignment may be a plan for staging a particular scene or play. They may be required to write instructions for the cast, composer and artist.
  4. Colloquium. It involves an assessment of the applicant's knowledge in the field of directing, culture, theater criticism and world drama. Here, the intellectual abilities of applicants and their skills in figurative thinking are tested.

If you have already firmly decided to enter the theater, then start preparing a year or two before the intended attempt. You can prepare for admission both with a tutor and on your own. Be sure to read a lot of one school literature program is not enough.

Remember that it is impossible to engage in theatrical activities on a schedule. They always do theater or don't do it at all.

The main selection criteria for admission to a theater university.

“There are only two criteria for admission to a theater school: this can be corrected for a future student, this can never be corrected ... This is what we must proceed from!” Leonid Volkov, the great theater teacher.

When entering a theater university, college or VGIK, there are selection criteria for applicants. Until recently, in front of acting teachers who listened to applicants at the final creative competition, in front of each actor's skill teacher, there was a lined sheet of paper in which the teacher put his assessment opposite one or another creative criterion of the applicant. Primitively, point by point.

Now there are no such "leaflets", but for every acting teacher, a professional in his field, such "fads" exist in their heads. These points are parameters, creative criteria, selection criteria against which the teacher speculatively assigns points to the applicant. Let's try to figure it out. What are these points?

The first point is: "External data of the theater university entrant".

For an actor - his external data - his business card. This is something that he cannot develop, this is from God and parents. Eyes, face, smile, height, figure, whiteness of teeth, shape of lips, color and naturalness of hair, absence of obvious physical defects - this is a reality and, of course, teachers of the skill of an actor (acting) pay paramount attention to this.

But don't be confused "external data" theater university entrant with his/her "stage charm" . So far, in the first paragraph, it is not considered. As is sexuality. As is beauty.

The concept of beauty, by the way, is conditional and subjective. The concept of beauty, especially female, is changing in humanity, like fashion. For the Renaissance - Leonardo da Vinci's Gioconda - was the standard of beauty.

But… if today we put a photo of some Miss Universe and a reproduction of Mona Lisa next to each other – I assure you – the choice of the modern average man will not fall on the “standard of da Vinci”.

Putting a mental assessment in the line "external data" - the teacher for the skill of the actor (acting) looks not at your beauty, but at the degree of expressiveness of your external data.

You can be far from beautiful, but have such expressive and penetrating eyes, which seem to reflect the slightest “rustle of your soul”, as the great K.S. Stanislavsky said.

Or, again, not to be handsome, but to have such a lively expression(“live face”), which “mirrors” any nuance of your experiences. You can have rare "external data". For example, very funny, comedian appearance. Have you met people on the path of life, the first glance at which causes a smile? Not often, but certainly met.

Or, on the contrary, if you look at a person, you will be taken aback!

So he seems somehow unusual, bright, his face, eyes, movements - excite, cause emotional response. It happens even less frequently, but it does happen.

This is the kind of natural rarity that we, teachers of acting, call unique external data. But this is rare! The presence of these expressive means does not depend on you and me. I repeat, this is an objective reality - it is on it that teachers first of all turn. Because they know that most of the bottom lines of the “evaluation sheet” (voice, diction, plasticity, even ear for music) can be developed by the student in the learning process, but external data and their natural expressiveness are not subject to development.

They either exist or they don't...

(From the article by Eldar Tagiev “Who is admitted to drama schools?” - the newspaper "Culture" September 1993.)

Yes, there is a concept "stage charm"- is also a very important criterion in the selection for admission to theatrical universities. But what is "stage charm"? This is a "sub-point" of what I was talking about above. Stage charm - again, do not confuse with beauty - stems from "external data".

“Stage charm” is, simply speaking, what explains why it is interesting, pleasant, exciting to watch a person who is on stage space. This, again, is an objective factor: either it exists or it doesn't.

"Stage Charm" can be both positive and negative.

For example, let's take a well-known example - the film "Brother": Danila Bagrov (actor Sergei Bodrov - Jr.) - positive charm, his brother (actor Viktor Sukhorukov) - negative charm.

But it is fascinating, interesting, pleasant for us viewers to observe the existence of these diverse actors. Our eyes do not get tired of either one or the other.

Both have the magic of "stage (in this case, cinematic) charm."

The stage and screen have a truly magical effect.

Sometimes handsome people in life - they turn into gray mediocrity, and - vice versa! I do not argue that there are internationally recognized standards of male and female beauty on stage and screen. For example, Marilyn Monroe is the standard of female beauty and sexuality for many Americans. She was charming both in life and on stage. But, you see, Marilyn Monroe has never been recognized as a Great Actress.

The world "prayed" for her as an icon of charm. To objective factors (criteria that cannot be corrected), I include, no matter how strange it may seem to anyone, a sense of rhythm.

Asked him: - "Yuri Andreevich, is it possible to become an actor without an ear for music?

Yuri Andreevich replied:

“Hearing is needed, although sometimes we accept applicants with a slow musical ear to a theater university. But if there is a problem of rhythm, then that's it. And you want to take a person, and sometimes you even take it, but by the third year you understand: this is insurmountable. Children without hearing begin to sing through rhythms, and hearing improves. But if the rhythm is lame, a person will not even be able to hear and perceive where to reproduce it. The teachers let him out of the university, realizing that they are letting him die. God gave him much more: charm, mobility, good susceptibility - everything is in him, but he is not able to perform an elementary action. He can accidentally pierce someone with a sword, inflict an accidental blow on someone, he falls out of dance numbers, and most importantly, he is motionless in speech, and all speech is on rhythms. He does not perceive the special style of the author, he is the same everywhere: thumps, thumps, thumps .... "

And the third "whale" of those criteria that are given to the applicant by God (after external data and sense of rhythm), I think this is an inner emotionality and contagiousness.

I think it is not necessary to explain in detail what is meant by this.

For me "contagiousness" - this is when an actor starts on my back from an emotional experience « goosebumps." But unlike the first two criteria, your emotionality, fortunately, can be developed and it is not developed in a good theater university.

And after graduating from a theater university, a good actor has been doing this all his life - with every role he "grows" your emotionality, increases the degree of impact on the viewer.

It is difficult to enter a theater university, there is always a big competition, even in the provincial ones, in my memory, there were 10-20 people per maesto, and even in Moscow time ... It makes no sense to choose which one is better: this only reduces your chances of success. Apply to all that you manage to capture in one introductory campaign, you will choose at the end if you enter several at once. First, everyone tries out for Moscow universities. In some provincial universities, additional recruitment is specially made in August, so that those who have flown from the last tours in Moscow have time to enroll. The closest to Msk is Yaroslavsky.

As for the reading program, etc. Of course, if there is an opportunity to learn from sub-courses, this somewhat increases your chances of success. On the other hand, stories about people who came to the audition on the way to the store and were taken straight to the competition (this is the name of the last round of selection) are also not uncommon. First of all, such people take it by the fact that they treat the result lightly, do not bother, do not hold back, behave impudently and thus stand out against the background of candidates shaking and stuttering with excitement, who have dreamed of devoting themselves to art since childhood. However, my advice is not to go "on the fool". Firstly, the situations described above occur mainly with young men: there are many times fewer of them, for girls the competition is merciless. Secondly, even if you are generously gifted and created for the theater, in an audition situation you need to demonstrate this in a very short time, like in a commercial, so that the selector’s blurry eye of the day instantly lights up and sets you apart from the crowd. If you still have not come into contact with the theater in any way, then find yourself an experienced tutor (actor) who will tell you how best to present yourself, which repertoire to choose (excerpt, poems, fables, or whatever they are listening to now). Somewhere you may be asked to sing (be prepared for this), if you have any additional skills - musical, dancing, sports - prepare a short number that will demonstrate them favorably on occasion. But don't mess around with your splits and somersaults until you're asked about them. It's annoying.

What else is in your power? Inform yourself about the masters taking courses in the year of your admission. Go (go) to the graduation performances, there you will see who they recruited last time))) Estimate if you look like one of the students (this will tell you in which "role" it is more profitable for you to perform at the show). Often, masters consciously or unconsciously choose the same types and, for sentimental reasons, will at least pay attention to you if you remind them of someone from the last course. But this is poetry. By the way, many theater applicants do not enter the first, but the second and third time, which indicates the important role of experience in this matter. But do not forget that with age your chances decrease: at 20 - 21 years old you may be told that you are already "old".

And lastly, don't dwell on it. Entering the theater institute also means becoming a stage star. The competition in the acting environment is colossal, every year five Moscow universities graduate 20-30-40-50 people each, of which only a few get into good theaters. Plus, an endless stream of unemployed is also pouring from the provinces ... the provincial theater is a place for unmercenaries with strong nerves. Our cinema, sorry, is in a deplorable state, you are unlikely to get to Hollywood ... in short, think a few times whether it is worth it, but if the trumpet is calling, then go and try it. Studying at the theater institute is incredibly exciting. Such a fun and eventful student life will not be anywhere else (this is not for you to sit at a desk for five years). But keep in mind that you don’t have to relax much either. From the first courses, idlers are mercilessly expelled. Classes start in the morning and end in the evening. The course will become your family, skill and stage performance - your personal life. The theater university is a sect, an environment of fanatics. If you are ready for this - then good luck. And yes, it's worth it.

How to enter the theater - this question, perhaps, was asked at least once by everyone who lives in love with cinema and theater, who sees himself exclusively on stage or on the big screen and dreams of national glory. If you are ready for the hard life of a theater student, do not mind studying from morning to night and working on yourself every day, then hurry up to get acquainted with the details of the admission process and start preparing now.

The process of admission to theater schools comes down to several stages, which are fundamentally no different from each other.

Selection consultation

First, the applicant goes through a selection consultation and pre-examination auditions, which are called rounds.

Upon arrival at the university, you must personally present your passport. In some educational institutions, in order to get to the selection consultation, you must sign up in advance by sending an email to the e-mail address that can be found on the website of the university, and in some you just get into a live queue.

In order not to miss the period of these auditions, you need to find out the number of the selection committee on the website of the educational institution and find out the dates. Consultations usually begin as early as April.

Pre-exam auditions

A program is being prepared for the tours - they select certain material with which a potential student will perform at auditions. It is imperative to prepare a poem, an excerpt from prose, a fable, which are learned by heart.

At all auditions, the same program is read - having performed one material at the selection consultation, no more changes should be made.

Members of the commission listen to applicants - as a rule, these are several university teachers and a master - one of them who is gaining a course. The master may not listen to you on the first round, but he will certainly appear on the next ones.

Auditions from the first to the third round are considered entrance exams. At them, applicants again perform with their program and perform additional creative tasks.

Always checking vocals - this does not mean that you will become a singer, but vocal preparation is an important skill for working in theater and cinema. But different teachers can ask you to show anything - you will have to dance, and show your ability to improvise, demonstrate your other talents - playing a musical instrument, gymnastic skills, etc.

Exams

The apotheosis is the so-called competition - the final creative competition for admission to a theater university. It differs from previous auditions in that the number of applicants is significantly reduced, claims to the selection are toughened, and the maximum number of teachers led by the master will listen to the participants.

If the applicant has not previously demonstrated his vocal skills and plasticity, they may be asked to show them at the competition. Perhaps they will ask you to make an etude - play a mini-sketch on a given topic, tell tongue twisters.

After the creative competition, general education competitions remain.

Graduates of Russian schools submit their results for the Unified State Examination (USE) in Russian language and literature, and applicants with higher education who graduated from school before 2009 and foreigners take an exam in these two subjects at the university itself.

Applicants to Ukrainian universities submit the results of the External Independent Assessment (EEA) in the history of Ukraine and the Ukrainian language and literature; foreigners, people with higher education and those who received secondary education before 2008 take exams in these subjects at the university.

All applicants write an essay and participate in a colloquium. This stage is a test of the general erudition and cultural background of the applicant, therefore, if there are gaps in this part, it is worth preparing better: there will be questions about literature, history, theater, and the theory of performing arts.

Only after passing the selection consultation at the educational institution, the applicant can submit documents. This is done in order to weed out unnecessary people at the initial stages and not to waste resources on processing unnecessary documentation - those who want to enter a theater university in Russia basically have two hundred people per place or more. In Ukrainian universities, the competition is ten times less, but it is still very difficult to enter.

The following documents should be prepared:

  • application addressed to the rector;
  • a copy of the passport (show the original at the university);
  • a copy of the certificate of assignment of an identification number;
  • certificate of secondary education or diploma;
  • results of the Unified State Examination or UPE;
  • medical certificate form No. 086-U;
  • photo 3 x 4 in the amount of 6 pieces;
  • guys - a military ID or a written certificate.

Universities require submission of original documents. Therefore, if you are applying to several universities at once, you will have to make notarized copies of the originals.

You need to prepare for admission to the theater at least a year in advance.

Enter all theatrical universities of your chosen city at once in order to increase your chances. Do not forget to find out detailed information about each university, what kind of “school” is there, what kind of teachers, who is the master who is gaining a course.

Do not forget about self-education - read a lot of fiction, read the works of Stanislavsky and Mikhail Chekhov (at the same time, do not confuse him with Anton Pavlovich at the colloquium), be sure to read about the history of the theater.

You must come to the audition well-rested, healthy and in a fighting mood - it will be a shame when, because of this condition, you cannot enter.

When you introduce yourself to the commission, try to sound even and confident, despite your inner feelings.

Remember, in fact, your main task is to impress the master. Before starting the auditions, find out what kind of person he is, how he teaches, where he played, what performances he staged - form an opinion about what is close to him and what he can be interested in.

Applicants come in to audition by the dozen; in the first or second, you can not particularly strive, but then be more active. Do not waste time: teachers are people too, they get tired, irritated, attention dissipates by the end of the day, and you may simply not be appreciated.

How to make a program

The question of preparing the program should bother you immediately after the question of how to enter the theater. You have to think carefully about your repertoire, study it, let it through yourself and then not look fake at auditions. For the same reason, it is not advised to change the program during the tours - it takes a lot of time for high-quality retraining.

Prepare several versions of each piece, preferably three poems, fables, and prose passages.

The recommended list of literature is often posted on the websites of universities, do not be lazy and study, but you can try to learn something on your own. For prose and poetry, it is better to choose something from classical literature. You absolutely do not need to read your author's work - it's not important whether you know how to write poetry, but how you can convey someone else's message to the audience. Looking for fables - take Krylov and you will not be mistaken.

The main principle of the selection of works is to cook what is close to you, what you can understand and convey to the viewer.

Try to choose diverse works, but in accordance with your type. Evaluate yourself from the outside and decide how to present yourself: maybe the image of a romantic hero suits you, or maybe you are a natural comedian? The discrepancy between the external type and material can be fatal for your theatrical future.

Those who want to enter the theater often turn to professional teachers for help, go to courses, but remember: this approach deprives your performance of individuality, because all the works and the way they are presented will not be chosen by you. In any case, it’s better not to talk about such an experience of preparing a commission - everyone wants the student to not be initially seasoned with someone else’s experience and vision of acting.

Speaking with the program, start reciting from the part of the work on which you put the main emphasis. Do not think that now you will tell the introduction, and then brilliantly lead to a bright moment - the commission will not listen to you for a long time, and you should immediately interest the audience.

your appearance

Girls need to emphasize their femininity. Put on a skirt or dress of medium length, a short skirt will obviously not please the commission, just like a skirt to the floor. And in general, don't wear anything provocative. Very flat shoes or high heels are not an option, choose a medium heel.

Bright makeup is not approved, but you should not come without it at all - stop at natural light makeup with an emphasis on the eyes. Hair should be tied in a ponytail, in any case, take an elastic band with you.

Young men should dress simply and decently: dress pants, a shirt or a T-shirt will come in handy, but do not wear a jacket - it should not hinder your movements. No extravagant outfits and sports shoes, your choice is shoes. Facial hair is also not welcome, so it is better to shave smoothly.

Remember, acting credits are pretty subjective in and of themselves, so don't get discouraged if you fail. Most famous actors tried to enter the theater for the second time, and for the third time, before something came out of them. In any case, you gain valuable experience and knowledge that will play into your hands in the future.
