Probably the most popular architectural landmark in the world is the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. However, few people still know that there are two such extravagant buildings in Madrid. These are two skyscrapers inclined towards each other. The Spaniards call this miracle the “Gate of Europe”.

The main difference between the grandiose architectural complex and its competitor in Pisa is that the Italian tower “falls” due to the architect’s thoughtlessness, while the Spanish skyscrapers are a deeply calculated brainchild of talented American engineers John Burge and Philip Johnson.

Let's take a look at their history...

Photo 2.

This whole story began in 1996, when John and Philip decided to surprise the whole world with something unusual. The daring creative plans of the architects were to destroy the stereotypes of rectangular construction. Sophisticated minds have found a way to bypass the earth's gravity. So in the capital of Spain, the most unique twin towers appeared, tilted to each other at fifteen degrees. The works of inquisitive architects today delight millions of tourists visiting Spain. Gates of Europe can rightfully be called one of the main centers of attraction for visitors to Madrid.

The towers are 114 m high and have 26 floors. After the Torres de Santa Cruz towers, they are the second tallest twin towers in Spain.

The Gates of Europe - the world's first "falling" skyscrapers - were designed by American architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee. They are also known as KIO towers because they were originally commissioned by the Kuwaiti company of the same name.

Photo 3.

tower building company Urbanor became a defendant in a noisy fraud case - one of the largest economic scandals in Spain. However, a little later, the Spanish investment corporation bought the towers, where the originals were found, which called this building among themselves “the gates to Europe”. People liked this name very much and now the towers are called only one way and no other. I must say that today this is quite the official name of the towers. Aquamarine glass buildings are hard to miss.

The grand opening of the towers took place in 1996. Shortly after the end of the project, another high-profile lawsuit attracted public attention: financier Javier de la Rosa, who led the investment operations of the KIO group, was charged with misappropriation of 375 million euros and sentenced to prison.

Photo 4.

Multi-colored helipads are provided on the roofs of ultra-modern skyscrapers. The platform of the left tower is blue, and the one on the right is red. One of the towers was recently owned by financial conglomerate Caja Madrid, as can be seen from the prominent logo on the glass façade. The other tower is owned by the Spanish construction firm Realia, which also placed its logo on the 100 meter high.

I must say that, despite the fact that the towers are not the tallest buildings in Madrid, they still captivate the eyes of newcomers. Falling skyscrapers give the city a special charm, make it more modern and at the same time contrast against the backdrop of numerous medieval palaces. The towers were made even more aesthetically attractive when a white stone obelisk was installed between them in honor of the famous politician José Calvo Sotelo.

Photo 5.

In 2009, the appearance of the square where the towers are located has changed markedly in connection with the construction of an obelisk designed by Santiago Calatrava. The square also houses a monument to José Calvo Sotelo (1960).
