Steps

Part 1

Assess your needs

Define your problem. You decide to change, but why? Understand what problem forced you to make changes in your life. What will your changes lead to?

    • Start positive. Write a list of what you like about yourself, or remember what other people say good about you. It is important to know your strengths in order to direct them in the right direction.
    • Try to formulate your goal in one sentence. Make sure it's what YOU want and not what others want from you. Change will come when and only when you sincerely desire it.
    • Then make a list of reasons why you want to change. All these reasons will motivate you in the process of your changes.
  1. Learn to praise yourself. Talk positively about yourself - this will help you create the image of the person you want to become and stay focused on it. Of course, statements such as “I’m well done with my mother and completely like myself” will not work, because they will only cause internal disputes with oneself. But realistic statements such as "I work hard, so I'm great" will help you stay positive. To develop a positive ego, try the following:

    • Start sentences with "I".
      • For example, “I am great”, “I work hard”, “I am original”.
    • Use sentences that begin with "I can".
      • For example, “I can reach my potential”, “I can become who I want to be”, “I can achieve my goals”.
    • Use sentences that begin with "I will" (or a future tense).
      • For example, “I will be who I want to be”, “I will overcome all obstacles”, “I will prove to myself that I can change my life for the better”.
  2. Imagine what your future will be like. Visualization is a kind of mental rehearsal of what might happen. You can imagine something abstract or more concrete, it's like collecting pictures that show you are moving in the right direction. Visualization will help you assess if you are working in the right direction, it will help you realize your goals. In addition, visualization helps develop a sense of control over your life. To visualize your future

    • Close your eyes.
    • Imagine your ideal self in the future. Where are you? What are you doing? How has your life changed? How do you look? What brings you pleasure and happiness now?
    • Imagine in detail your ideal life. What does she look like? Try to catch some special sights, smells and tastes. Detailing will make the picture more realistic.
    • Now this visualization will help you define your goals.
  3. Be prepared to break old habits. Things happen in life that we never expected. On your way there will be many obstacles and many people who will annoy you. Be prepared for the small setbacks and hurdles needed to succeed.

    • Be realistic - this is the best way to handle any situation. Don't blame yourself or others. Failures happen, there is no way to avoid it.
  4. Learn a lesson for yourself. Sometimes it will seem to you that everything is bad. That you won't reach your goal because it's too high, and eventually you'll change your goals and take a different path. But remember that failure happens to everyone. If you learn to learn from failures and failures, you can avoid them in the future.

Be patient. If changes happened overnight, they would cost nothing. You will not be able to notice the results immediately after the first attempt to change. And even if the changes are already visible externally, they can be difficult to feel internally. Changes will happen gradually, every day, and even if they are almost imperceptible, know that they are happening!

    • Break your goal into several sub-points. This will help you assess whether you are moving in the right direction. Motivate yourself and keep trying!

    Part 2

Set the right goals for yourself
    1. Set only the right goals. Goal setting is a kind of art. Your path of change and results largely depend on how you manage to set goals for yourself. Here are a few points by which you can evaluate the effectiveness of your goals. Check if your goals are really useful:

      • Significance
      • Meaning
      • Achievable (or action-oriented)
      • Relevance (or results orientation)
      • Controllability
    2. Set meaningful goals for yourself. This means that goals should be specific and detailed. It will be quite difficult to develop an action plan for achieving a goal that is too vague and unspecific. The goal must be clearly defined, only then will you succeed.

      • For example, the goal "to be successful" is too vague. Success is not a definite sign, it can be interpreted by different people in different ways.
      • But the goal of "graduating from university with a master's degree in social sciences" is already more specific.
    3. Make sure your goals are meaningful. You must be sure that the goal is "measurable" and makes sense. If you cannot understand whether you have already achieved a goal or not, then this goal cannot be measured.

      • For example, the goal of “being successful” cannot be measured. You cannot know when you will officially become successful, and besides, the very meaning of this goal will change for you from day to day.
      • On the other hand, the goal of “graduating from university with a master's degree in social sciences” is quite measurable and meaningful. You will know that you have achieved this goal when you receive your diploma.
    4. Make sure your goals are basically achievable. Achievement of the goal may vary depending on the person. Even if your goal is considered achievable based on many factors, some of them may be beyond your control. Ask yourself if you have enough knowledge, skills and abilities to achieve your goal. Assess how it is possible for you to achieve this goal.

      • For example, the goal of “becoming the smartest/richest/powerful person in the world” is unattainable in most cases.
      • A more achievable goal is to "get a higher education." Although for some, a more achievable goal may be to "finish school."
    5. Assess the relevance of your goals. This is especially important for short-term goals that are sub-points of the main goal. Goals should be relevant, they should fit into the overall rhythm of your life. It is unlikely that you will succeed if your goal does not coincide with the rhythm of your life.

      • For example, the goal of "graduating from university with a master's degree in social sciences" refers only to the goal of "working in the relevant field in the future". If your goal in life is to become a pilot, then achieving the sub-goal of "getting a master's degree in social sciences" will not bring you one iota closer to the main goal.
    6. Set a time frame for yourself to achieve these goals. Effective goals must always be supported by some kind of time constraint, otherwise you can relax and never reach your goal.

      • For example, the goal of "graduate from university with a master's degree in social sciences" must be achieved in 5 years. If necessary, you can reconsider the deadline for achieving the goal, but a short deadline will motivate you more, you will no longer consider your goal as something vague that will happen someday later.

    Part 3

    Get Started
    1. Start right now! Once you say "tomorrow", and you will never start work at all! "Tomorrow" is a day that will never come. To change your life, you can not hesitate a second, otherwise you will not achieve your goal!

Break your big goal down into several subgoals. If you set yourself a fairly high goal, come up with several sub-goals that will lead you to achieve the main goal.

    2. Reward yourself. Be sure to praise yourself for small successes - this will serve as additional motivation for you. Dance, watch TV for an extra half hour, or treat yourself to a delicious, expensive lunch.

      • Try not to reward yourself with actions that will slow you down towards your goal. If you're trying to lose weight, reward yourself with a new blouse or a trip to the movies, not a third serving of ice cream.
    3. Use your emotions. As you work toward your goal, you likely go through a ton of emotions. If you find that emotions somehow help you achieve your goal, try using them to your advantage:

      • When you reach a sub-goal and feel happy, you automatically motivate yourself to reach the next sub-goal.
      • If you fail, let disappointment motivate you to achieve this goal no matter what.
      • If you are about to achieve your goal, but something always distracts you at the last minute, let the feeling of anger and anger revive your hope to reach the goal despite all the obstacles.
    4. Get out of your comfort zone. Most people are used to doing what they usually do. If you want to make changes to your life and your habits, get out of your comfort zone. Feeling uncomfortable at first may upset you, but in the future you will gain new experiences and be able to change your life.

      • This is another situation where subgoals will help you. A big goal may seem too big and intimidating, but if you step out of your comfort zone slowly, from one sub-goal to the next, you will eventually reach the main goal.
      • For example, imagine that you have an office job that annoys you a lot. Set a goal for yourself: "to become a nurse in the emergency department in the next 3 years." Achieving this goal will seem intimidating right away, but if you set yourself sub-goals, such as “go to nursing school,” you will gradually move out of your comfort zone.
      • Allow yourself to feel a little uncomfortable as you get closer to your goal. You are probably surprised and feel positive emotions as you approach the main goal.

    Part 4

    Watch your progress
    1. Stay motivated. During the process of change, there are bound to be obstacles in your path. Learn to overcome them.

      • Be responsible for your choice. Let your friends and relatives follow your progress.
      • Don't work hard. You can run 16 km on the first day, but the next day you will be exhausted and unable to even move normally. Everything is good in moderation.
      • Control your internal dialogue with yourself. If you are talking to yourself in negative tones, stop! Throw negative thoughts out of your head, interrupt in mid-sentence, if necessary.
      • Find like-minded people. A support group will provide you with additional motivation.
      • If you succumb to old habits, write down the time and reason. Analyze possible causes. Maybe you're hungry, frustrated, or just tired.
      • Celebrate any success! If you had a good day, write it down! Success and progress motivate us to move on.
    2. Watch your health. It is much easier to conquer peaks when a person feels good. Keeping track of your health is beneficial not only because it will help you get your life back on track, but also because it helps you stay positive.

      • Eat right, sleep well, move. Set yourself goals that are not so easy to achieve - and you will give yourself a chance to change. Take care of your body and mind, and only then proceed to solve the problem.
      • It must be a long term change. While you will need to make an effort to cut out extra carbs/be the first to start talking/save money (depending on your goal), you'll get used to it soon enough.
    • Don't care what other people think of you. You are changing for yourself, not for them.
    • Change begins with the realization that it is necessary. If you don't know why you're making these changes, you're unlikely to achieve your goal.
    • You can change your life over and over again.
    • Smile! This is an automatic charge of positive for the whole day.
    • Do not give up! Pick up speed gradually and do not slow it down!
    • Don't change for someone - it won't bring you pleasure, especially if that person ever leaves your life. If you decide to change, do it only for yourself.
    • Travel. Go somewhere to unwind. You can discover new experiences, new people, and new perspectives that will help you change the way you think.
    • Remember that you must try and do everything to feel happy.
    • Changing your appearance can motivate you to change your inner world. (for example, strict clothes motivate to be more intelligent and quick-witted). But never confuse the two!
    • Be persistent. An action must be repeated at least 21 times before it becomes a habit. The first day will be hard, but every day it will get easier and easier.
    • Be yourself and don't think anyone else is better because everyone has their faults.

Today I want to talk to you about personal growth, or rather about how to change your life.

People begin to think about this issue, as a rule, when the level / lifestyle ceases to suit them.

In the first case, there comes an “X” moment, when everything in life seems to be not bad, and sometimes everything is even good, but something is clearly missing. A person begins to think about the meaning of existence. He asks himself questions like - “And what am I doing?”, “What do I live for?” and others…

In this case, the person is simply ripe for a new stage in his life. He is ready to grow and develop. In this situation, help in the form of simple advice is usually not needed. He himself is able to evolve. When a person grows to this level of awareness, then the maximum that he may need is a personal mentor ...

There is another case when a person is looking for an answer to the question of how to change life. There comes a moment of “F” (or full “F”) when a person comes to the conclusion that it is time to change something, that it is impossible to live like this any longer. Everything is bad, you don’t like the job or it is low-paid, the quality of life is not up to par, neglected health ... There can be a lot of reasons.

And at such moments, people are characterized by an emotional impulse to start living differently, to change life for the better. For most, this impulse passes as soon as the situation stabilizes. For example, I'm tired of being overweight and a person makes a clear decision from Monday or immediately from today whether to go in for sports or go on a diet. But when after a couple of days the emotions subside, then everything returns to normal.

Or problems with finances, a lot of debts, and so on... When this whole situation worsens once again, then a person decides to change his life for the better and actively acts for some time. For example, looking for a new job or decides to learn how to manage their expenses. And as soon as the financial situation stabilizes a little, then all the zeal comes to naught, the person calms down, and life again begins to flow according to the old scenario.

There are situations when some serious event turns life completely upside down. And once an emotional decision is made, it gives strength and incentive to action and to cardinal changes in life.

And if you are not satisfied with the current quality of life, you are ready really take care of yourself, your life, then I have for you a few tips. All this is tested on myself and my life experience.

Let me give you a personal example: That was about nine years ago... My life was going downhill. At that time, my daughter was 2 years old, I had not yet worked, and we lived on the meager salary of my husband (now ex). The marriage began to fall apart, constant scandals, reproaches, distrust and stuff like that. Becoming a housewife, I lost most of my friends (more precisely, not friends, but rather friends, acquaintances and colleagues). A couple of real friends still remained.

And that's when one unpleasant incident happened, which was the last straw (let me not write about it). Then I made an emotional, but absolutely balanced decision - a divorce. I just asked him to leave, and the next day he took his things.

I will not pour out all the details, I just want you to understand what life situation I was in at that time. A small child in her arms, a decent amount of debt, lack of work and a complete lack of money in the wallet. But at the same time, maternal instinct, faith in yourself and in a better life, and it is not clear from where, the strength that has come from.

With this "baggage" I began to establish and change my life.

In less than three days, I was back at work. I found a way to combine caring for my daughter, home and work. Then, she paid off her debts. Restored some old connections and found a bunch of new, interesting and useful acquaintances. All in all, I got back on my feet in less than a year.

It was the first turning point in my life. But he gave me an impetus in my personal development.

Then a new shock happened, searches, depression and much more. Then a new, even more interesting life stage. At the moment, I have not been employed for more than 5 years, I am financially independent, I travel ... But about all this, maybe some other time ...

I will not strain you with the story of my life and let's go directly to the advice that I can give you. Where to start?

"Change your thinking and you will change your life!"

I consider this phrase your life motto. Because at one time, a deep understanding of this phrase greatly changed my attitude towards negative situations.

Our thoughts and our perception of the world around us directly affect events, situations and life in general.

Start Reading

Yes, yes, read. And read not newspapers and magazines, and not fiction, but books that provide food for the mind. Personal growth, motivation, psychology, time management, business literature. Finally read Richard Branson's book "To hell with everything! Take it and do it!

I read at least one book a week. There are about a hundred books on my iPad and the collection is periodically updated with new copies, and the books read are sent to the appropriate “read” folder.

Change your habits

Start loving yourself, take care of yourself and your body. If possible, give up bad habits.

Start building a new healthy habit into your life every month. I hope you know that any habit is built in 21 days. That is, in order to accustom yourself, for example, to daily exercises at home, you just need to devote at least a few minutes to this every day for 21 days. This is how you develop a habit. Well, increasing the training time is no longer difficult.

Invest (invest in yourself)

Want to improve your life financially? Learn to handle money the right way. I am not going to tell you about assets and liabilities in this article. You can read about it in Robert Kiyosaki's books.

But when it comes to investing, the best investment is in yourself! Do not spare money for education, books, trainings, image, training. Money invested in self-education is the best asset that will pay off in the future.

Improve yourself. Strengthen your strengths and develop the skills you need. Communication problems? Invest in public speaking courses. Does your salary depend on the number of sales? Forward to business trainings, where you will be taught how to sell!

If you are wondering what additional skills I have pumped over all this time, then

Change the environment

Our success is highly dependent on the environment. If you surround yourself with whiners and losers who are content with little, then you have practically no chance of becoming successful.

Start communicating with people who have already achieved the results that you are only striving for. Make friends, chat, ask them questions...

Start recording

Write down on paper or in a text document your ideas, plans, goals, tasks.

As long as the goal is in the head, it is not so much a goal as an ephemeral dream. As soon as you write it down on paper and set deadlines, the dream becomes a real plan (task).

Don't put ideas aside

As soon as some great idea comes to you, do not run to discuss it with a friend. Just start implementing.

Here are some simple rules that can change your life for the better.

And for today I have everything.

Sincerely, Yana Khodkina

It often happens that a person seeking to change his life focuses only on certain areas of life and neglects others.
For example, if he is interested in finding himself and self-realization, he may not think about physical development. If he is interested in his figure or personal life, he may not think about a career or finances, etc.

But, as practice shows, this approach is a mistake.
In order to achieve results in any of the areas of life, one must not forget both the entire personal strategy and those specific areas that seem unimportant to you, but actually play a significant role. This is the only way to solve a specific issue and change life in general.

If you don't know where to start, start by improving your appearance.

Here is what a famous plastic surgeon and psychiatrist says:

When you change a person's face, you almost always change their future as well. By changing his perception of his appearance, in almost all cases you change the person himself - his individual qualities, behavior - and sometimes even talents and abilities❞

This statement applies not only to the cardinal alteration of oneself through plastic surgery, but also to all positive changes in appearance. Having lost five kilograms or made a new hairstyle, you begin to perceive yourself differently, you feel more confident and attractive.

Analyze your habits

The next step is habits. Our habits are at the core of our character. Remember the famous aphorism of Aristotle, which is familiar to many from childhood:

❝If you sow a thought, you will reap an action; you sow an act, you reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; you sow a character, you reap a destiny.

Habits are patterns of our behavior that govern our lives. Are we really going to let them decide everything for us, following their lead?

Method: Carefully analyze each of your habits and its impact on your life. Eliminate those that hinder your success, replace them with new, healthy habits.

For those who really decided to work on themselves, I offer the Success Diary - a classic diary with applications for achieving success and working on yourself

4. Conditioned reflexes
No wonder the scientist Pavlov tormented dogs: conditioned reflexes are the basis of the foundations. With this key, you can form any habit you need.

Method: Repetitive actions with reinforcement develop new skills and habits. When a new skill is fixed, it will go into the subconscious and you will do everything automatically, unloading your brain for new achievements.
Reward yourself for success or take something away if you backtrack on your plan to change yourself. Let your new quality be necessary and desirable for you.

5. Eradication
What cannot be converted into a plus, just eradicate.

How to identify your negative qualities and how to see yourself from the outside, read the article. You can also download a table of negative human properties.

6. Double life
The technique is suitable for developing new character traits and more significant changes in oneself.

Method: Imagine yourself the way you want to be. Rehearse the new role mentally over and over again. To be more convincing, buy things that will help you get into character and emphasize your new qualities. Wear them only for your second life.
Your environment is unlikely to immediately accept you new, so communicate with those who do not know you! Rehearse your new qualities on them. How much will they believe in your image? And if something does not work out, you can always change the place and environment, and try again.

7. Use your imagination

In the course of the experiment, it was proved that if a person daily spends a certain period of time in front of a target, imagining himself throwing darts at it, then his results will improve to the same extent as if he really threw darts at the target every day.

Mental images allow us to "practice" new relationships and character traits that would otherwise be unattainable. Our nervous system is not able to distinguish reality from what our imagination vividly painted. When we imagine ourselves doing something in some particular way, it is almost the same as actually doing it. Mental practice helps to achieve perfection.

Method: Every day in the morning and before going to bed, mentally imagine yourself the way you aspire to be. How you speak, how you move, what you wear, how you react to situations. Do it over and over. This imaginary picture will have a strong influence on your behavior. And remember, how you see yourself from the inside largely determines how others see you and others.

8. Shock
If you want to change yourself but still don't find enough motivation to start, let failure be your motivation.

Method: Associate with people who will openly despise you. Use other people's ridicule to your advantage. Prove to them that you can be better, prettier, smarter. This method has never failed.

9. Alien
Often with our loved ones, we behave like a pig. Hamim, we neglect them and do not respect them at all. Whereas with strangers we are completely different, especially with superiors. If you want to change your behavior, try this method.

Method: Imagine in the place of the father or mother a complete stranger to you, whom you want to impress. Treat them like a boss on whom your salary depends. Try to look at them from a distance, as if seeing them for the first time.

10. Tune in

Method: change the environment and communicate with the people you want to be like. Adopt their habits, their way of thinking. In every book on achieving success, communication with successful people is an obligatory item, how does this work?

In the course of communication with another person, we tune in to his wave - to the mentality of the interlocutor and his worldview. Without this, communication is impossible. As a result of this adjustment, we temporarily change our ideas, stereotypes of thinking and behavior, to someone else's. And the more often this happens, that is, the more often we communicate, the more we adopt until someone else's picture of the world becomes ours.

11. Cold shower of the "future"
When you really grow up and think about the future, you suddenly realize that it would be time to get rid of many habits and character traits. The thought that you will soon have to build a new life with your family is sobering. I no longer want to overspend, be optional, drink all night with friends.

Method: Think about the future and the life you want to have, and figure out for yourself how you need to change and what habits to eradicate.

But I want to warn you don't take on too much. Weakly amenable to change innate temperament.

An introvert (a person deep in himself), of course, can change and become his opposite - an extrovert. But he will soon get tired of this “role” and will be unhappy, being in plain sight, secretly wanting to be alone with himself and his thoughts. There will be a feeling of emptiness. It arises from the loss of energy, because introverts draw it from within themselves, and only spend it in communication with others. It becomes clear that to lead such a long life is difficult and exhausting.

Be sure to record your wins and losses in a Success Diary, which is definitely worth starting if you are aiming for serious results.

Or maybe you don't need to change?

Find your circle where you will be accepted as you are and there you will be happy. Everyone has their own value system and it is quite possible that your dream is to change and become more popular, successful, etc. will not bring the desired joy.

Or sublimate your energy into creativity. How can this incomprehensible Freudian term help us? The fact that we can redirect dissatisfaction with ourselves, life, others into creativity, using the defense mechanisms of our psyche.

Leonardo da Vinci, the great painter, scientist and engineer did just that. Whatever he took on, he brought it to perfection. However, it is reliably known that he had no interest in sex. Such sublimation can be traced in many creative people. They simply cannot create when they are happy.

Sublimate (redirect) your energy and desires into creativity, to new hobbies. Are you a bespectacled man with a bad figure and therefore experience difficulties with the opposite sex? There are two ways out here - to change by working on yourself: exhausting workouts plus pickup courses. Or - find the passion of your life and create. We miss your talent so much!

As you change yourself, don't forget to change the space around you. Tidy up a cluttered apartment and change your wardrobe, how to do it easily and quickly - in Erin Doland's motivating book "Simplify Your Life" ().
