Read the summary of Tolkien The Hobbit, or There and Back Again

Hobbits are small people with hairy legs who live in the Shire. Their homes are houses dug into the ground. In addition to hobbits, the world created by J. Tolkien is inhabited by elves, humans, gnomes, wizards and goblins. Elves are immortal and similar in appearance to humans. Dwarves live in the mountains.

The main character of the book is Bilbo Baggins. He is a wealthy hobbit. He has a good friend - Gandalf, he is a wizard. One day Gandalf and the dwarves visit Bilbo. Thorin leads the dwarves. The dwarves are planning to take the treasure from the dragon Smaug, because these jewels belonged to them, and the dragon appropriated them dishonestly. The gnomes want revenge.

The city where the dragon lives is far away. The road there is full of dangers. The dwarves take Bilbo with them on the road, as Gandalf advises them to do so, saying that Bilbo is a professional thief. Bilbo agrees to go with them, as they promise him some of the treasure.

So Bilbo, Gandalf and the thirteen dwarfs set off. On the way they meet trolls. The travelers were already ready to say goodbye to life, but the clever Gandalf was playing for time. Because he knows that when dawn comes, the trolls will turn to stone. And so it happens. In the dwelling of the trolls, travelers find swords and a dagger. They give him to Bilbo, he gives him a name, Sting.

Wanderers enter on the way to the elves. Those help them decipher the mysterious signs on the map. So the dwarves will know how they can get into the cave to Smaug.

Then the travelers find themselves in a cave where goblins live. They barely run away from the enemies, but in a hurry they leave the hobbit. Bilbo finds the ring. The hobbit meets Gollum, a strange, ugly creature. This being, it turned out, owned the ring. At first, Gollum wants to kill the hobbit, but they strike up a conversation. They ask each other riddles. Gollum promises to show Bilbo the way out if he wins. Bilbo wins. In his last riddle, the hobbit asks what is in his pocket. There is a ring there. Suddenly Gollum realizes that his charm (as he calls his ring) is gone. The ring is very valuable, as it is not simple, but magical. It makes the person who wears it invisible. As a result, Bilbo runs away from Gollum.

Bilbo catches up with the dwarves and the wizard, and they move on. They are attacked by goblins, but the eagles save the party. Travelers further get to Beorn, who helps them. Dwarfs with a hobbit are walking through a scary forest. First, they are caught by spiders who want to eat them. But Bilbo saves everyone. Then the Wood Elves take them prisoner. But even here Bilbo rescues everyone. No wonder the gnomes took him on the road with them.

Finally, thirteen dwarfs with a hobbit reach the Lake-town, next to which is Mount Smaug. Bilbo puts on his ring, and now no one can see him. He steals the golden cup from the dragon. And during the second meeting, Bilbo finds out where the weak point in his armor is. A resident of the city finds out about this and kills Smaug. Then he asks the dwarves to give him part of the treasure. After all, it was he who killed Smaug, who destroyed Lake-town. In addition, part of the jewelry was stolen by the dragon from there. The elves come to the mountain. Reinforcements are coming to the gnomes too. It looks like the battle is about to start. But then comes the army of goblins. Dwarves unite with elves and humans. The battle begins. Eagles come and help the dwarves. The goblins lose and run away. But they lost many warriors in the battle, including Thorin.

Bilbo returns to his home. He gives up most of his share of the jewels and only takes two chests. When Bilbo comes home, he sees that his things are being sold at an auction. The Hobbit writes a book about his adventures.

"The Hobbit, or There and Back Again"

Hobbits are a cheerful, but at the same time solid little people. They are just like people, only half the height of us, and their legs are overgrown with hair, and they do not live in houses, but in "burrows" - comfortable dwellings dug in the ground. Their country is called the Shire, and people and elves settle around it - very similar to people, but noble and immortal. And long-bearded gnomes, masters of stone and metal, live in the mountains. Well, our hobbit's name is Bilbo Baggins; he is a wealthy middle-aged hobbit, foodie and songwriter. One fine day, his friend, the kind and powerful wizard Gandalf, passing him off as a professional thief, sends thirteen dwarves to him to help the dwarves take away their treasures from the fire-breathing dragon. Many years ago, a dragon captured their cave city and lay there on a pile of jewels; it is not known how to get close to it, and the road to the distant mountains is difficult and dangerous, it is guarded by goblins and giant trolls. And even worse, these ferocious and infinitely cruel creatures obey the powerful ruler of the Dark Kingdom, the enemy of all that is good and bright.

Why did the wizard send gentle Bilbo on such a dangerous journey? It seems that the hobbits are chosen by providence to fight the Dark Kingdom - but this will open much later, but for now the expedition led by Gandalf sets off. The dwarves and the hobbit almost die when they meet the trolls; Gandalf saves them by turning the robbers to stone, but the next ambush in the goblin cave is much more dangerous. Twice, thrice the ferocious goblins attack the company, the dwarves flee the dungeon, leaving Bilbo unconscious in the dark.

Here begins the real story, which will be continued in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Poor Bilbo comes to his senses and crawls along the tunnel on all fours, not knowing where. His hand stumbles upon a cold object - a metal ring, and he automatically puts it in his pocket. It crawls further and gropes for water. Here, on an island in the middle of an underground lake, Gollum has been living for many years - a bipedal creature the size of a hobbit, with huge luminous eyes and flipper-like legs. Gollum eats fish; sometimes he manages to catch a goblin. Having examined Bilbo in the darkness, he swims up to the hobbit on a boat, they get to know each other. Alas, Bilbo says his name ... Gollum would like to eat Bilbo, but he is armed with a sword, and they start playing riddles: if the hobbit wins, Gollum leads him to the exit from the dungeon. It turns out they both love puzzles. Bilbo wins, but not entirely fair, by asking "What's in my pocket?"

The ring in his pocket was lost by Gollum. This is a magical Ring of Power, the creation of the lord of the Dark Kingdom, but neither Gollum nor Bilbo knows about it. Gollum knows only that he loves "his charm" more than anything else and that by putting it on his finger, he becomes invisible and can hunt goblins. Having discovered the loss, Gollum in a rage rushes at Bilbo, and he, running away, accidentally puts on the Ring. Becomes invisible, eludes Gollum and catches up with his company.

They move on towards the mountains. Giant eagles, friends of the wizard, save them from the goblin chase, soon after that Gandalf leaves the dwarves and Bilbo - he has his own affairs, and without him the company gets into trouble over and over again. Either they are almost eaten by giant spiders, or they are captured by forest elves, and every time Bilbo rescues everyone: he puts on a ring and becomes invisible. Truly, a homebody hobbit turned out to be a godsend for the dwarves... Finally, after many adventures, the company climbs into the mountains, to the lost possessions of the dwarves, and begins to look for a secret door leading to the dungeon. They search for a long time, unsuccessfully, until Bilbo, on a whim, discovers the entrance.

The time has come to go inside, for reconnaissance, and the cautious dwarves want Bilbo to do this, promise him a rich share of the booty - and he goes. Not because of money, I think, but because of the craving for adventure that has awakened in him.

... In the darkness of the dungeon, a crimson light glows. A huge, reddish-gold dragon lies in a cave on piles of treasure, snoring, emitting smoke from its nostrils. He sleeps, and a brave hobbit steals a huge golden cup. There is no limit to the delight of the gnomes, but the dragon, having discovered the loss, in a rage burns out the surroundings of their camp, kills their ponies ... What to do?

Bilbo climbs into the cave again, starts - from a safe hiding place - a conversation with the dragon and cunningly finds out that the monster's diamond shell has a hole in the chest. And when he tells the dwarves about it, the wise old thrush hears him.

Meanwhile, the dragon is furious at the hobbit's importunate harassment. He takes to the air again to burn the only human city left at the foot of the mountains. But there he is struck with a black arrow by Bard, the captain of the archers, a descendant of the kings of this country: the wise thrush managed to retell the words of Bilbo to the captain.

The events don't end there. The absurd leader of the dwarves quarrels with Bilbo, Bard and even Gandalf over trifles, it almost comes to a battle, but at this time the invasion of goblins and werewolves begins. Humans, elves and dwarves unite against them and win the battle. Bilbo finally goes home to the Shire, refusing the promised fourteenth share of the treasure of the dwarves - to transport such wealth, it would take a whole caravan and an army to guard it. He takes away on a pony two chests with gold and silver, and from now on he can live and live in perfect contentment.

And with him remains the Ring of Power.

Hobbits are an unusual people. Their differences from ordinary people are: short stature, legs, abundantly covered with hair, place of residence - a hole.

The country where they were born is called the Shire, around which humans and elves live. In the mountains there are bearded gnomes who can work with stone and metal.

Bilbo Baggins is the main hobbit of the work, a funny and cheerful character who composes songs. Once the wizard Gandalf asked Bilbo to help and pretend to be a thief in order to take away the treasures of the hobbits from the evil dragon.

The journey is planned to be dangerous and difficult. But our hero did not possess either courage or heroic strength. In the process of reading the book, it becomes clear that the hobbits are chosen to fight the representatives of the Dark Kingdom.

The dwarves and Bilbo Baggins are on their way. They encounter trolls, fall into a cave and are ambushed. As a result of the attack, the hobbit is left unconscious by his fellow travelers in the dungeon.

Waking up, the hobbit finds a metal ring, then meets a local inhabitant of Gollum - a strange two-legged creature. They play riddles and he is defeated by a hobbit. The ring found by Bilbo has magical powers. The heroes don't know about it yet. By accidentally putting the ring on his finger, the hobbit becomes invisible and disappears from the dungeon.

Having caught up with the company of gnomes, treasure rescuers set off for the mountains. And again before them there are dangers and adventures. And having met with a terrible dragon, Bilbo is forced to fight him by cunning. From hiding, the hobbit starts a conversation with him and learns that there is a hole in the villain's shell. He told the dwarves about this and by chance a wise thrush heard him.

When the dragon flew into the air to burn the city, the Bard's arrow hit him in the chest. The wise thrush told the captain what he had heard.

After all these events, there was a quarrel between the head dwarf and the hobbit, as well as Gandalf and the Bard. A grandiose battle is prevented by the attack of goblins and werewolves.

United by a common misfortune, people and gnomes win the battle. The hobbit goes home, taking with him a small chest of well-deserved gold and silver.

The author of the book is the English writer John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, also known for a number of other works that together make up one big universe: The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, and many others. Despite the fact that they were written at the beginning of the 20th century, they still have not lost their relevance. They are read by many to this day. "The Hobbit" ("Travel back and forth") is only a small part of the huge legendarium, which is striking in its scale. Sometimes it's hard to imagine that all this could be invented by one person.

"The Hobbit, or There and Back Again": a summary

The book tells about how a small creature - a hobbit by name - lives peacefully and calmly in his mink in Hobbitania, in a village called Shire. One day, a powerful magician named Gandalf the Gray (who is one of the key figures in Tolkien's universe) comes to visit him. He saw in the young hobbit a craving for adventure and travel. A friendship developed between them. And one day a detachment of dwarves comes to Bilbo's doorstep, led by the fugitive king Gandalf persuaded the dwarves to take him on their campaign without Bilbo's knowledge. The goal was to return the lost kingdom of the Dwarves of Erebor, which was captured by the evil dragon Smaug.

At first Bilbo was indignant and flatly refused to take part in this matter. However, he unexpectedly agreed and took on the role of a scout and scout. The heroes set off on a long and dangerous journey. First they went through the mountains, where they were almost eaten by goblins who had a kingdom there. They were attacked by evil creatures - orcs. After that, they are saved from giant wolves - wargs. They pass the forest, in which they are waiting. However, thanks to the abilities of the magician and the ingenuity of Bilbo, the detachment always gets out of any trouble. The heroes even escape from the wood elf prison, where they are imprisoned for crossing the elven border without asking.

Wandering through the caves in the mountains, the hobbit finds a small ring, which he puts in his pocket without hesitation. Bilbo meets a strange creature - Gollum, who leads a wild life and eats fish and carrion. It wants to kill and eat Bilbo, but instead the heroes play riddles, and if the hobbit wins, Gollum will show him the way out of the cave. Bilbo wins, and it turns out that the ring can make anyone invisible. Gollum previously owned it, so he thinks Bilbo stole the ring and tries to find it. But Bilbo is already invisible and has found a way out.

Here is the squad and the target. Bilbo enters Erebor, which is located in the Lonely Mountain, but the dragon wakes up without finding a scout (after all, Bilbo had a ring), leaves the mountain and attacks the nearest city - Ozerny. However, one of its inhabitants - Bard the Archer - kills Smaug by hitting him with a large arrow in an unprotected place on his stomach. At this time, the dwarves penetrate into Erebor and return it to themselves, appropriating all the treasures stored there.

But the inhabitants of the city want to receive compensation for their losses, so they go to the gates of Erebor, hoping to take part of the treasure for themselves. The squad of elves also fits there. Thorin, seeing this, calls to himself all the dwarves who once lived in Erebor and were saved during the dragon's attack on the kingdom. They build defenses and prepare for battle. But it begins differently - a large army of orcs approaches the mountain, who, having learned about the death of the dragon, also wanted to take the wealth for themselves. Humans, elves and dwarves unite against the new threat and repulse the orcs, but Thorin dies in the battle.

Bilbo after these events receives part of the treasure, returns home with Gandalf and continues to live the same life. He writes a book about his adventures, which will later be called Ala.

This is how you can convey the summary. "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again" is a dynamic book, full of many events that change each other, like in a kaleidoscope, but there is no discomfort when reading, since the author managed to harmoniously put them together.

The meaning of the work

At its core, the first part of Tolkien's series of works on the fictional world of Middle-earth is precisely The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. The book was successfully filmed by director Peter Jackson, who had previously filmed a trilogy based on another Tolkien work - The Lord of the Rings. The film, which was also made into a trilogy, was successful and grossed millions of dollars at the box office. What is the secret of such popularity of seemingly ordinary fantasy, which is now a dime a dozen?

What is a good book?

A brief summary ("The Hobbit, or There and Back Again"), of course, does not describe all the delights of the book. Tolkien attracts the reader's attention in many ways. First, it is inexhaustible optimism. The book is easy and pleasant to read, it is saturated with positive, and therefore, even despite the troubles of the characters, there is confidence that everything will be fine. Secondly, the characters' personalities turned out to be quite interesting, and each of them can be perceived almost as a native. Thirdly, Tolkien managed to create a unique and inimitable universe, in which there are so many mysterious and unknown things that sometimes goosebumps run down your skin.

In fact, Tolkien launched a whole generation of young writers, artists and other artists who were largely inspired by his works. Therefore, the writer's contribution to the development of modern literature and art in general is difficult to overestimate.

Universe of Tolkien

Of course, a summary cannot give a complete picture of the author's works. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is only part of the diverse and multifaceted world created by Tolkien, and one book will not be enough to fully understand the events. Therefore, it is worth reading other works, especially since they are all written at a very high level. There are so many places, regions, creatures and wonders in Tolkien's world that it will appeal to both beginners and people familiar with the fantasy genre more thoroughly.

Heroes of the book

The main characters are the hobbit Bilbo, the magician Gandalf and the dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield. The characters are quite different, in many ways they make the book "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again" so interesting. Briefly describe each character:

  • Bilbo is simple-hearted, but at the same time smart, resourceful and loyal. He never let the detachment down during the entire campaign, for which Thorin appreciated him, although at first there was a misunderstanding between them.
  • Gandalf is a classic image of a wise wizard. He is kind, but at the same time fair and stern, always comes to the rescue. In addition, he knows a lot about the world, which has saved the squad more than once.
  • Thorin, as befits a king, albeit a fugitive, is powerful, strict, fair. He is brave, for which he won the respect of his people, moreover, he is the only heir to the royal dynasty of Erebor.

There are many different genres in literature, and one of the most popular is fantasy. Children, like adults, enjoy immersing themselves in the world of elves, hobbits and orcs. Just Tolkien's famous story "The Hobbit or There and Back Again" will enable the reader to go on a journey with the heroes. The purpose of the campaign is to get to the Lonely Mountain and find the treasures of the dwarves that the dragon captured. To get acquainted with the plot, we offer a short version.

The Hobbit or Back and forth summary

Tolkien's The Hobbit There and Back Again introduces us to the hero Begins. This is a wealthy hobbit that lives in a comfortable hole on a large hill. The Begins family was a respectable couple with whom nothing ever happened. But as it turns out, in the family there is always one who will find adventure on his head. This is exactly what the book The Hobbit will tell in a summary of the chapters.

Before moving on to stories about one hobbit, the author introduces the reader to who hobbits are in general. They are less and less talked about and can be seen less often, as they are afraid of people and try not to get caught by them. These are small creatures, lower than the gnomes, good-natured little men with a big belly. They have warm fur and like to wear bright clothes.
Our hero's mother, Belladonna, was from the Took family. They say that one of the Tooks married an elf and now you can see non-hobbit features in them. From time to time one of them found adventures. For these reasons, this family was not respected. But one of the Bagginses married Belladonna, who would go on adventures anyway.

Bango, the husband of Belladonna and the father of our hero, built the best hole for his wife, which had no equal. There they lived until old age. Bilbo Begins was their only son, who took everything from his father. But the habits of Tooks were also in it, which were simply waiting for the moment to manifest themselves. But such a moment did not appear. Baggins had already grown up, reached the age of fifty, lived in a hole and did not know sadness.

Chapter: Unexpected Guests

Continuing the retelling of the work of the Hobbit in a summary, we learn how one day Gandalf comes to the hero - a character who cannot be imagined without adventures. Gandalf was already forgotten, since he was not in these parts, so Bilbo, unsuspecting, saw in Gandalf an ordinary old man.

Bilbo spoke to the old man, who in conversation said that he was looking for someone who would go on an adventure with him. However, in areas where friendly hobbits live, this is difficult to do. Begins wanted to say goodbye to the old man, but he was in no hurry to leave and gave his name. And then the hero recognized Gandalf, who raised the ears of the whole district, arranging various shows. Recognized the one that caused many hobbits to disappear, going in search of adventure. It was a wizard who was friends with old Took, Bilbo's grandfather.

Chapter: Roast lamb

The wizard invited him to become a participant in the adventure, but Mr. Baggins did not agree. To say goodbye to the old man, the hero bowed, but at the same time invited him to tomorrow's tea. Bilbo was glad that he had evaded the adventure so cleverly. On the second day, he no longer remembered the invitation, as his memory was bad. But the doorbell made the hero remember everything, Opening the door, he did not see Gandalf. Instead of him stood a dwarf with a blue beard. Bilbo had no choice but to invite the guest to the table. But after one dwarf, new ones began to come. A whole company of thirteen dwarfs, led by Gandalf, gathered. Each of them demanded food and drink. Going to the pantry, the hobbit thought about whether he had already got into some kind of adventure.

Chapter: Respite

Having finished the meal, the gnomes said that they were not going to leave, as there was a long conversation ahead. They cleaned up after themselves, began to sing and play their instruments. With them, the hobbit was mentally transported far beyond the Hill on the other side of the river. From their songs, Baggins began to wake up something Tukovskoe. It was already dark and then the dwarfs started talking. As it turned out, they set off on a journey to the dragon, from which the jewels must be taken away. Because of the sign that Gandalf left yesterday, the dwarves considered Bilbo a professional burglar. But since the hero refused the case, he was called a weakling. To prove the opposite, the main character agrees to go along.

Chapter: Over the mountain and under the mountain

They began to consider a secret passage on the map, and Baggins takes an active part in the discussion, which he did not expect from himself. Before setting off, Bilbo wanted to know all the details about the dragon and the gold, and how it got to the dragon, and much more. Bilbo learned from the chief dwarf Thorin the story of how they settled under the mountain, expanded, got rich, found a lot of jewelry. They lived happily until the dragon Smog attacked in their place. He burned everything, killed the gnomes, captured the gold and has been sleeping on it for years. Only thirteen dwarves survived. They had already accumulated new treasures, but they never forgot about revenge. They now want to take what is rightfully theirs, and the card that was in Gandalf's hands will only help in the matter. Many did not understand exactly how the card fell into the hands of the wizard, but so far they were satisfied with Gandalf's explanations. After talking, Bilbo placed everyone for the night, and in the morning the dwarves and the hobbit were going to go.

Continuing to study Tolkien's work The Hobbit or back and forth, reading the work in summary, the reader is transported to the next day. Waking up, the hobbit saw a lot of dishes, noticed that the gnomes had already had breakfast and left. On the one hand, the hero was delighted, and on the other, a little disappointed. But he immediately calmed down and already forgot about everything, as Gandalf appeared and handed over a note from the dwarves, who went ahead for preparations and would be waiting for him in the tavern.

Gathering together, sitting on a pony, the dwarves and Begins set off, Gandalf joined them. They walked for a long time, spent the night anywhere, walked even in bad weather, and here they are on the opposite bank of the river. We stopped to have a bite to eat and warm ourselves by the fire, but could not kindle it, and here also part of the provisions was lost, and Gandalf himself disappeared somewhere. In the distance, the participants of the journey saw a light and decided to go to it.

As he got closer, Bilbo Baggins saw that the giants were sitting around the fire and cooking a leg of mutton. They wailed and complained that they were tired of lamb, but they would not refuse a dish of a man. Bilbo thinks about returning to the dwarves or plundering the trolls and returning with booty. The hobbit decides to steal the wallet from the pocket of one of the trolls, but was immediately captured. An argument ensued between the trolls, which escalated into a fight. The rest of the gnomes and giants were also captured, and now they decide what to cook from them. Then Gandalf appeared. Hiding behind a tree, he inserted various questions, thereby forcing the trolls to bicker among themselves. They argued among themselves and did not notice how dawn came. With the sun's rays, the trolls turn to stone.

The participants of the journey were released and began to look for a passage where the trolls were hiding from the sun. Finding the door and opening them with a key that fell out of the troll's pocket, the heroes found a lot of gold and weapons. Having captured everything and hidden it in one place, so that they could pick it up on the way back, they went to their goal. At the same time, Thorin asked Gandalf where he had disappeared. The wizard explained that he went ahead to scout the road, but the habit of looking back made him return. As it turned out, for good reason. So he ended up near the trolls and gnomes with a hobbit who needed help.

The participants of the journey set out on their journey. Now no one sang, but only silently rode a pony and then mountains appeared in the distance. That's exactly where they were heading. But the mountains that seemed very close were still very far away. Need to stock up on food. On the way, the gnomes with the hobbit meet the elves, who showed the right way to the last home Hearth, where they all had to rest and eat well. There they were met by the master Elrond. The travelers stayed for fourteen days. Here, on Midsummer Day, strange letters were seen on the map. Elrond read the clue that showed the way. Taking the map, the dwarves, Gandalf and Bilbo set off.

Rivendale valley behind, dangerous path ahead. A thunderstorm caught everyone and they hid under an overhanging rock. From a distance they saw giants. It was necessary to look for another place and a couple of gnomes went to investigate. They found a cave, where they all moved. They fell asleep there. But the dream was not long. Goblins came and seized everyone, dragging them into their gorge. Only Gandalf was not captured. In their lair, the goblins staged an interrogation. Just during the conversation, Gandalf came to the aid of the travelers, who helped the captives to escape. But at the end of the journey, the goblins managed to grab the leg of one of the gnomes, who was carrying a hobbit on his back, the second fell and hit his head. Bilbo lost consciousness.

Chapters: Riddles in the Dark and From Fire to Fire

The hobbit woke up alone. There was no one and he decided to crawl in some direction. During his journey, he found the ring, which was a turning point in his life. He put the ring in his pocket, and he sat down and began to dream about food. Bilbo decides to move on. So the hobbit met Gollum, who liked to call himself my treasure. He decided to find out more about Baggins and offered to play riddles. At the same time, if the hobbit loses, then Gollum will eat him, and if he wins, he will show the way out. They made and solved riddles, no one gave up until Bilbo asked what was in his pocket. Here Gollum could not answer, but discovered the loss. His treasure, his ring, is gone. This ring was just found by the hobbit. Fleeing from Gollum, he put his hand in his pocket and put it on his finger. So Bilbo became invisible, because the ring was magical. The hobbit himself understood this, and besides, he heard about the magical action from Gollum himself, who lamented and wanted to find the ring and Bilbo. Following Gollum, the hobbit managed to get to the exit and even get away from this strange creature. However, goblins were waiting ahead of him. The hero runs away from them.

Chapter: Unprecedented Refuge

The hobbit advances and accidentally finds his friends. They met him and listened to the story of his salvation. They were proud of such a brave Bilbo. Then everything is on the road again. There are wolves - allies of the goblins, from which everyone manages to escape thanks to the eagles and their leader - the Lord of the Eagles. They simply hate both wargs and goblins. Thus ends their adventure in the Misty Mountains. The eagles help the travelers cross over to Carrock Rock, from where they change direction to Beorn. Gandalf and the hobbit went first, the dwarves were to come later. Having come to Beorn, the heroes told about their journey and adventure in detail. At first, the story seemed incredible and invented, but the captured goblins confirmed the story. Beorn becomes an ally of our heroes. By supplying everything necessary and showing the way, Beorn thereby helped the travelers. On the way, Gandalf leaves the heroes.

Further, the characters of the work follow without a wizard, without turning off the road. However, the forest was endless. Here the heroes go to the enchanted stream. Crossing it, Bilbo gets into the water and falls asleep. The heroes now have to drag their comrade as well. The black forest is behind, the beech forest and the edge are ahead, but the heroes do not know this. Seeing the lights, travelers turn off the path and lose it. Bilbo and Thorin are lost along the way.

Chapters: Spiders and flies and In barrels - at will

Thorin is captured by the elves, and Bilbo meets a huge spider that he had to fight. Later, he helps out his comrades, who also fell into the web and were surrounded by huge spiders. Putting on the ring, the hobbit frees the heroes. But the adventure doesn't end there. The dwarves are captured by the elves, who are interrogated. Bilbo, invisible, sneaks after the captives, wanders around the castle and tries to help out his comrades who have become prisoners. With the help of empty barrels and a secret passage, the gnomes are freed.

Chapter: Welcome

The heroes reach Esgaroth, the lake town, and there they are supplied on their way to the Lonely Mountain.

Chapter: Night Thief

And now the gnomes are at the mountain, the door is found, Bilbo goes to explore the cave to the dragon. While he sleeps wearing a ring, the hobbit steals the golden cup. Having descended into the cave a second time, the hobbit angers the dragon, but this time he also found out about the weak armor on his chest, which he told the dwarves about. People will also know about it. So, when in anger the dragon burned the settlement of people who helped the hobbit, the man Bard kills him. He learned from the thrush about the gap in the shell on the chest of the dragon. This is what he took advantage of.

Chapter: The storm broke

Dwarves get their home and get their treasures, but the elves and humans claim the treasures. A conflict also arose between Thorin and Bilbo, who could not share the big diamond. Thorin refuses to share his wealth with anyone, and help comes to the dwarves in the form of an army of dwarves of the Iron Hills. But then goblins appear - the common enemies of people, dwarves and elves. They unite in the battle of the five armies. Later, eagles came to the rescue. The goblins were defeated, only Thorin and his nephews died in the battle.

Chapter: Way Back

The battle was won, the treasure was divided, Bilbo also received his share and set off on his return journey.
On the way back, the hobbit with Gandalf stayed with the king of the elves, after which he set off, but not through the forest, but around it. We went to Beorn, passed the cave of the trolls, where they took the buried treasures, and then went to the house of Elron. After staying with him, Bilbo decides to go home, as he was drawn to his native land. There he found that all his property was being sold by auction, and he himself was declared dead.

Final chapter

Bilbo wrote notes about his adventures, which were later published in the West Crome book. After the journey, Bilbo brought only a couple of chests of gold, but the Ring of Power remained with him, which he subsequently passed on to Frodo's nephew. Thus ends the work of an English writer called The Hobbit and our summary of the story.

Chapter 1

In a cozy hole underground lived a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Once, “the unsuspecting Bilbo saw just an old man with a staff” - it was the famous wizard Gandalf, whom the hobbit did not immediately recognize.

Gandalf didn't know "whom to take on the adventure" he started. After talking with Bilbo, he chose that little hobbit.

The next day, gnomes began to gather at Baggins' hole. They behaved extremely unceremoniously, and swept away all his food supplies. When Gandalf appeared, Bilbo realized that he was involved in some kind of story. He learned that the dwarves had lost the Lonely Mountain, in which the terrible dragon Smough settled. Together with the dwarves and wizards, Bilbo decided to go on a dangerous journey as a burglar.

Chapter 2

The next morning the whole company set off. Despite the fact that it was July, it was continuously "pouring rain", and the mood of the travelers was not the most cheerful. It deteriorated even more when in the evening it became clear that Gandalf had disappeared somewhere, and soon the pony with luggage ran away - “so there were mere crumbs for dinner, and even less for breakfast.”

The frustrated gnomes tried to make a fire, but to no avail. Seeing a light in the distance, they sent Bilbo to scout, because only "hobbits can move silently in the forest, completely silently."

Near the fire, Bilbo saw three giants who were roasting lamb. He wanted to demonstrate his skill as a burglar, but a huge troll managed to catch him. Dwarfs appeared at the noise, which the trolls began to catch in bags.

The fate of the friends would have been very sad if Gandalf had not arrived in time. He turned the giants to stone before morning. Friends found many treasures in the troll cave. Bilbo "choosed for himself a dagger in a leather sheath", and buried some of the treasures.

Chapter 3

Gandalf told the travelers that he intended to make a short halt in Rivendell, where the elves lived. They greeted the wizard and his little friends with great cordiality. Having learned about the purpose of their journey, the leader of the elves - the wise Elrond - carefully examined the map and said that they could find the exact location of the keyhole on the day of the Last autumn moon.

Chapter 4

The hobbit and the dwarves, "guided by the advice of Elrond and the knowledge of Gandalf", chose the right path to the desired pass. The road, "lost in the mountains", was difficult and dangerous. It was cold here, a piercing wind was blowing, and it was necessary to talk in a whisper so as not to inadvertently cause a collapse of stones.

One day, the wanderers "caught up with a thunderstorm - and not just a thunderstorm, but a real thunderous slash." They decided to hide from the weather in a dry cave, which was found by one of the gnomes. Friends settled down comfortably and soon fell asleep. Their peace was broken with the appearance of the owners of the cave - they were "great goblins, huge ugly goblins".

Roughly seizing the gnomes and the hobbit, they brought them to their master - a gigantic goblin "with a huge head." When he saw the "sword from the trolls' lair", he roared with rage - it was the same sword that destroyed more than one hundred goblins.

The dwarves and Bilbo were on the verge of death, but at the last moment they were saved by Gandalf, who killed the Great Orc. Friends set off again, but on the way they had to fight several times with the orcs, and as a result, Bilbo fell behind his comrades.

Chapter 5

Once alone, Bilbo wandered into a tunnel that led him to the shore of an underground lake. Here "old Gollum lived, a slimy little creature." Noticing Bilbo, "Gollum wondered intensely who it was." He met a hobbit and began to play riddles with him. They began to guess riddles, not yielding to each other in ingenuity and ingenuity.

When Bilbo's imagination ran out, he asked Gollum what was in his pocket. He was confused and could not answer. Suddenly, he realized that the hobbit's pocket might contain his "charm" - a magic ring that can make its owner invisible.

In a rage, Gollum rushed at Bilbo, but he managed to put the ring on his finger and was unharmed.

Chapter 6

Bilbo was very lucky, and almost immediately he found the dwarves and Gandalf. His sudden appearance caused a great commotion. Having told about his meeting with Gollum, he withheld about the magic ring. But it seemed to Bilbo that "the magician guessed the unsaid."

Friends hastened to leave the Misty Mountains before nightfall. Suddenly, they heard a wolf howl - they were merciless enemies hurrying towards the orcs, who were about to attack the human settlements.

Gandalf ordered everyone to immediately climb the trees. He began to throw fireballs at the wolves, and soon everything around was blazing with flames. At that moment, “goblins ran out into the clearing screaming,” and the friends were trapped.

Salvation came in the form of the Eagles, who "became curious about what was going on below." Taking pity on the dwarves, they took them to a safe place and provided them with provisions.

Chapter 7

The eagles carried the wanderers further from the mountains. Gandalf informed the dwarves that he intended to leave them, as "other hasty business awaits him". They began to cry and lament - they did not want to be alone, they begged the wizard not to leave them alone.

Gandalf warned his friends that he would introduce them to the strong and fearsome werewolf Beorn. In order not to inadvertently anger him, the wizard decided to introduce the dwarves to him in turn, because in anger he is terrible, although in a good mood he is very kind.

Beorn was in a good mood, and gave shelter to little travelers. He listened with pleasure to the story of their wanderings, and he was particularly pleased with the news of the slain Great Orc.

Thanking Beorn for his hospitality, the friends set off. When "it was time to say goodbye to Gandalf", everyone's spirits dropped. The wizard told the dwarves and the hobbit to be careful not to leave the path in any case.

Chapter 8

The dwarves had to go through a dense dark forest, while "the road itself was narrow and wound between the trunks, as if in a tunnel." Several times Bilbo climbed the trees, but he could not see the end of this forest.

After a while, travelers began to notice the fires around which someone was feasting. Forgetting Gandalf's warning, they rushed towards the fires. However, the fires began to disappear one by one, and the dwarves realized that they were lost.

That's when they "became really scared." At that moment, the gnomes were attacked by monstrous creatures - huge hairy spiders. They quickly wrapped their sticky webs around the dwarves, turning them into cocoons. Only Bilbo managed to escape thanks to the magic ring. He distracted the spiders and freed his friends. To explain his amazing luck, he had to reveal his secret with the ring.

Chapter 9

As soon as the gnomes came to their senses after a collision with spiders, they became victims of an attack by armed elves. They did not treat them too kindly, linking them "in a long chain." Bilbo managed to go unnoticed this time too. He followed the elves, and soon found himself in their palace.

The dwarves were placed in a dungeon where there was a warehouse of empty barrels. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Bilbo stole the keys from the guard and freed his friends. The dwarves climbed into the barrels, and after a while the elves, suspecting nothing, pushed them into the water. Then the elves-rafters tied the barrels together and sent them down the river.

Chapter 10

Bilbo, sitting on one of the barrels, admired the surroundings. Soon before his eyes appeared the majestic Lonely Mountain, "crowned with ragged clouds." Behind the bend of the river one could also see the Long Lake, on the endless banks of which lay the majestic city of Esgaroth.

Having driven the barrels to the shore, the elves-rafters went to the city for a little rest. Bilbo took advantage of this, who in turn freed his friends from their imprisonment - "wet, bruised and bruised, they still did not really realize that they had broken free."

Thorin Oakenshield - the king of the Dwarves - majestically entered the city, and ordered him to be taken to the mayor. At first, the mayor did not believe Thorin's words, since the dwarves were dressed in rags and looked very miserable. When Thorin announced that he was the King under the mountain, the crowd rejoiced - everyone was happy about the return of the dwarves.

The travelers were treated for wounds, "after which everyone began to be fed and courted." Finally, after so many wanderings, friends were able to properly rest.

Then Thorin declared that he "intends to move with his companions to the Mountain" and recover his treasures. They boarded the boats and set off across the Far Lake to the dragon's home.

Chapter 11

Two days later, the dwarves were at the foot of the Lonely Mountain. Here "nothing indicated the proximity of the dragon", and the travelers went to the Main Gate. When examining the area, they concluded that the gate was probably guarded by a dragon - there were too many crows here, and black smoke swirled everywhere.

Then the dwarves went around the mountain and found a secret door on which "there were no hinges, no heck, no threshold, no keyhole." They tried to open it with picks and crowbars, but to no avail.

At last Bilbo remembered Elrond's words about the last day of autumn. After waiting for the sun to disappear below the horizon, the friends saw how its last ray pointed to the keyhole in the wall. Thorin inserted his key into it, and the door opened.

Chapter 12

The dwarves argued for a long time about who should be the first to enter the dark opening - it was too scary to do it. Bilbo had to do it, even though he was as afraid as the others. He made it safely to the dragon's lair, who was sleeping and "snoring loudly". Beneath him "piles of innumerable treasures lay", and Bilbo, unable to stand it, grabbed a heavy golden bowl and "ran away".

When the dragon woke up, he immediately noticed the loss. In a rage, he went in search of the thieves. The gnomes only miraculously escaped persecution by hiding in a secret passage.

When "the dwarves recovered a little from their fear", they persuaded Bilbo to once again sneak into their treasury. The hobbit put on the ring, but the dragon smelled it anyway. They began to talk, and Bilbo was extremely puzzled by the dragon's excellent knowledge.

Smough began to brag about his strongest scales, but upon closer inspection, Bilbo noticed that there was a bald area on his chest - several scales peeled off, and in this place the dragon was "naked, like a snail without a shell".

Having learned everything he needed, Bilbo returned to the dwarves and told them everything. Their conversation was attentively listened to by an old blackbird sitting on a branch nearby.

Chapter 13

When the dwarves decided to get out of the cave, they realized with horror that the entrance was littered with stones - "neither a key nor a spell could not open the door." Having calmed down a little, they went to their treasury. Among the piles of gold, Bilbo accidentally noticed the Arkenstone - a precious stone, the most important treasure of the Lonely Mountain. Without thinking twice, the hobbit hid the stone in his pocket.

In gratitude for his courage, Bilbo received a gift from Thorin - chain mail “of silver steel, which the dwarves call mithril”, as well as a richly decorated belt and helmet.

Smug was nowhere to be seen. The dwarves moved to a distant sentinel post and began to watch.

Chapter 14

The enraged dragon rushed to Esgaroth, and began to sweep away everything in its path. People in a panic rushed out of the city, fleeing from the raging flames and destruction. Only a few daredevils dared to shoot the dragon. Among them was a brave archer named Bard. He "shot with a huge yew bow and ran out of all his arrows but one."

Suddenly, an old blackbird sat on Bard's shoulder and "spoke in his very ear." He told the archer about the weak point of the dragon, and he, taking advantage of the advice, mortally wounded the dragon.

Upon learning of the death of Smoug, many elves and residents of Esgaroth decided to go to the Lonely Mountain - everyone was occupied with thoughts of the countless treasures of the dwarves.

Chapter 15

Meanwhile, the dwarves still did not know anything about what had happened, and anxiously awaited the appearance of Smough. The same old thrush brought them good news. He also said that people are angry with the dwarves due to the fact that the dragon completely destroyed Esgaroth. Drozd advised them to trust Bard, who was determined to rebuild his hometown of Dale, which once flourished at the foot of the Lonely Mountain. "After many years of ruin, men, elves and dwarves can live in peace again", however this one will cost Thorin money.

Greed seized the king of the gnomes - he did not want to share his treasures with anyone. People and elves were quite surprised when they saw a stone blockage at the entrance to the cave, which the dwarves hurried to make. The bard began to appeal to Thorin's conscience. Other warriors also joined in the conversation, believing that "at least a twelfth of the treasure should be given to Bard." But Thorin responded to all exhortations with an arrow shot from a bow.

Chapter 16

A series of dull days dragged on, "the gnomes whiled away the time, laying out and sorting out treasures." Bilbo realized that he had to do something so that civil strife between people, elves and dwarves did not start.

Sneaking out of the cave, he went to the King of the Elfs and Bard and gave them the Arkenstone - so they can quickly negotiate with the stubborn Thorin. Everyone began to praise Bilbo, including Gandalf, who unexpectedly appeared in the camp. He predicted difficult trials for the hobbit, with which he had to cope.

Chapter 17

The next morning, Bard and the Elven King came to negotiate with Thorin and showed him the main treasure - the Arkenstone stone. Learning that this was the work of Bilbo, the dwarf king in anger wanted to kill him. This was prevented only by the appearance of Gandalf.

“The passion for dragon treasures was so overwhelmed” by Thorin that he did not want to hear about any agreements. A great battle was brewing. Suddenly, "a black cloud covered the sky, the mountain shuddered from the thunder." They were hordes of orcs, goblins and wargs that were approaching the Lonely Mountain. “Above their army, like locusts,” the bats flew. The great battle nevertheless began, but the opponents were already completely different.

In the midst of the battle, eagles descended from the sky - "a great host from all the mountain nests of the north." Bilbo rejoiced most of them, but a stone thrown from above knocked him down.

Chapter 18

When the hobbit woke up, “he didn’t find anyone nearby” - the battle was over. Humans, elves and dwarves were able to win thanks to the eagles, who "cleared the slopes, pushing the goblins into the abyss or driving them down, right on the spears of the enemy."

Gandalf told Bilbo about the death of Thorin, who was mortally wounded in battle. He was buried under the Lonely Mountain, with the Arkenstone he loved so much on his chest. Another dwarf became king, who gave Bard the promised fourteenth part of all the treasures. The archer acted nobly, and distributed them among the elves and the inhabitants of the ruined Esgaroth.

Bilbo received as a gift two chests filled with gold and silver. Turning "his back on his adventures," he set off for home.

Chapter 19

On their way home, Bilbo and Gandalf visited Elrond in Rivendell and told of their extraordinary adventures. The hobbit also remembered the treasure of the trolls, safely hidden by him by the river. Having dug it out, he hurried home, where all his possessions were already being sold at auction.

Bilbo had to convince his relatives for a long time that he was alive and well. His return made a lot of noise, and "rumors and gossip did not stop for several months."

Bilbo spent most of his treasures on buying back his own furniture, gifts to his relatives and friends. He never told anyone about the magic ring, and "was very happy until the end of his days, and he lived surprisingly long."

Conclusion
