They are isolated, distinguished by intonation during pronunciation and commas in writing:
1) any definitions and applications, if they do not refer to a personal pronoun, for example: 1) Tired, she could not go further. 2) She, completely exhausted by the road, could not go further. 3) She, in a heavy fur coat, could not go further. 4) I, your old matchmaker and godfather, have come to put up with you. (Cr.) 5) A geologist, he traveled all over Siberia. (S. Ant.) 6) We, the gunners, fussed about the guns. (L. T.);
2) agreed common definitions and applications after the noun being defined, for example: 1) I tore with a desperate hand a blackthorn tangled with ivy. (L.) 2) The sky, full of a thunderstorm, everything trembled in lightning. (Tyutch.) 3) A fighter, a blond boy, quietly touches the accordion. (Tward.);
3) agreed non-common homogeneous definitions after the noun being defined, for example: March night, cloudy and foggy, enveloped the earth. (Ch.)

Note. Agreed definitions and applications before the noun being defined are separated if: a) they have an additional adverbial meaning, for example, reasons:
1) Stunned by a heavy rumble, Terkin bows his head. (Tward.)
2) Intelligent animals, beavers hibernate intelligently. (D. 3.); concessions: Wounded by shrapnel in the shoulder, Captain Saburov did not leave the ranks. (Sim.); b) separated from the noun defined by other members of the sentence, for example: Further, forever alien to the shadow, the yellow Nile washes the red-hot steps of the royal graves. (L.)

The above punctuation rules apply equally to the separation of agreed definitions and agreed applications. However, there are some peculiarities in the isolation of applications.
Coordinated applications are separated, including single ones, standing after the word being defined - a proper noun,
for example: There was a captain, and a lieutenant, and Onisim Mikhailovich, a sergeant major. (L.T.)
The exceptions are those single applications that merge with the proper name in meaning and pronunciation, for example: Vladimir recognized Arkhip the blacksmith. (P.)

Notes. 1. An application with a union is isolated if it has a tinge of causality, for example: Valery, as a native of the south, it was difficult to get used to the harsh climate of the Arctic (cf .: Valery, since he was a native of the south, it was difficult to get used to the harsh climate Arctic).
If the union as has the meaning “as”, then the application is not highlighted with commas, for example: Everyone knows Semyonov as a good locksmith. 2. Separate applications can be highlighted with a dash if they are given more importance and when pronounced they are separated from the word being defined by a longer pause, for example: November has come - the month of hard frosts. (Kaz.)
