Macmillan practical preparation for the exam. Macmillan Exam Skills

In my opinion, the most difficult thing in teaching English is preparing for the Unified State Examination and international exams. Over the years of practice, I used everything except the tambourine and potions - all the textbooks that more or less proved themselves on the positive side were tested by me and my students. And one of my favorite manuals is Exam Skills for Russia / A collection of tests for preparing for the exam in English

Almost a dozen students were preparing for it, and therefore I can say with confidence that it is an excellent manual. And for those who prepare on their own, and for those who are helped by a tutor. In addition to working with these tests, we usually also use the First Certificate Language Practice / Michael Vince, but more on that later. So, directly this collection:

  • From the very beginning, the exam is described - what, how, how long it lasts - nothing new.
  • The tests themselves - there are 20 of them in total, each of them consists of Language and Exam Skills Development and directly Test

Each section includes: Listening, Reading, Grammar and Vocabulary, Writing, Speaking.

Exercises are quite interesting, heterogeneous. Add some additional benefits - and you're done!

"Macmillan Exam Skills for Russia: Grammar and Vocabulary" is to help students prepare for the English language exams in the USE format and at the B2 (Vantage) level of the Common European Framework scale. The manual includes theoretical material and practical exercises on those sections of vocabulary and grammar that are included in all the main parts of the exam at level B2 of the common European assessment system and in the unified state exam in English. The manual consists of 28 lessons, each of which includes tasks for the development of lexical and grammatical skills.
.
The grammar section begins with a theoretical part (the first two pages of each section), in which grammatical phenomena are explained in a simple and accessible way. The most complex grammatical phenomena are highlighted under the heading "Watch Out!" The second part of the grammar section includes tasks of various form and complexity in the USE format, aimed at repeating and consolidating the material covered.
.
Thematically organized lexical sections of the manual include all types of tasks that meet the requirements of the USE and the B-level exam.
2. Each section begins with the introduction of lexical material, organized in the form of a table, which consists of five parts: lexical units on the subject under study with an explanation of the meaning of the word and the features of its use in speech; phrasal verbs; stable phrases; speech patterns and word formation. Lexical exercises of varying complexity in the format of the Unified State Examination and the B2 level exam provide a thorough development and consolidation of the material of the section. Each lexical section is built on the grammatical material of the previous section, which contributes to the repetition and automation of the skills of using previously studied grammatical structures.
Particular attention in the manual "Macmillan Exam Skills for Russia: Grammar and Vocabulary" is paid to the repetition and consolidation of the material covered. The allowance includes:
14 sections to review the material covered.
2 tests to check the degree of assimilation of the material covered (after sections 14 and 28).
7 review tests (after every fourth section) provided in the teacher's book.
tasks in the format of the unified state exam.
Additional materials.
Additional reference materials located at the end of the manual include:
list of the most commonly used irregular verbs.
a list of active vocabulary for each section, with explanations of the meanings of words and examples of their use, taken from the Macmillan Essential Dictionary.
a list of phrasal verbs with explanations of meanings and examples of their use in speech.
list of stable phrases.
reference materials on the compatibility of words.
reference materials on word formation.

I managed to finish school even before the USE was introduced. Of course, there are much more opponents of such an exam system than supporters, but this is already our reality, which is much easier to put up with than to resist.

The exam in English is a difficult exam. In 2017, it is unlikely that you will be able to enter a good university with a basic level of passing an exam in English. To get a high score, you need to start preparing for the exam as early as possible.

As we know, the written part consists of 40 tasks for which students are given 3 hours, and includes:

  • test audition;
  • test reading;
  • lexical and grammatical tasks, also in the form of a test;
  • letter in two stages.

It is worth saying that for the first part of the English exam, they give a maximum of 80 points, if the student needs to increase the score, then he must come on the second day to pass the oral part.

If the written part can be trained by studying independently using various manuals, then for the oral part you need a teacher.

This post will be devoted to the most successful teaching aids for preparing for the exam in English on your own.

1. Macmillan Exam Skills for Russia

This is the only book to date for preparing for the exam, which consists of 15 complete tests in the new format of the exam, including the oral part. When working on the tests, all changes in the exam format were taken into account. Tests created in collaboration with M.V. Verbitskaya, chairman of the subject commission on foreign languages of the Unified State Examination. The Macmillan.ru website provides additional USE materials for students and teachers: online tests, audio files, video tips, etc.

The new Macmillan Exam Skills for Russia "Tests for Preparing for the Unified State Examination in English" series are based on the typology of tasks proposed in the Unified State Examination. They present a unique methodology for the development and activation of oral speech skills, which ensures effective preparation for the exam and its successful completion.
This manual contains a large number of training exercises that allow you to teach the correct construction of questions (Task 2), the ability to choose linking words (Tasks 3 and 4). The manual contains exercises to prepare for Task 1, work with phonetically complex words and structures.
I would like to immediately note the excellent quality of the illustrative material. All pictures correspond to the subject of the oral part of the exam, they are bright and colored, allowing the student to develop his imagination.
Thanks for the great help! There was a new impetus to prepare students for the exam at a qualitatively new level.

Feedback on Tests for preparing for the exam in English

In this article I would like to describe my experience of using such a resource as "Tests for preparing for the exam in English" edited by Maria Verbitskaya, Malcolm Mann and Steve Taylor-Knowles. The printed edition also includes an access code to the online resource.

The teachers of our school have been using this manual for more than a year, so there is already a certain opinion about the benefits of this resource. If we talk about the printed version, it should be noted that the structure resembles manuals for preparing for international exams. (Before each test, Language and Exam Skills Development is given, which is important for understanding how one or another test should be performed) The tests themselves fully comply with the required USE format, both in complexity and in structure. As a wish, it can be noted that it would be very convenient if tips were given in the first 3-4 tests for the correct completion of tasks in reading, grammar and vocabulary. Since this manual does not only involve testing, it would be a good idea for students to first refer to such prompts.

The second component of this resource is the online version. In it, a big plus are the videos, which set out tips for the successful completion of tasks. In my opinion, this is very useful information. You can add essay and speaking samples with an analysis of typical mistakes, which undoubtedly helps teachers prepare their students more successfully. The online version is also a positive feature is the presence of timing when performing speaking tests. This teaches students to monitor their speaking skills. And most importantly, it gives students the opportunity to get used to working with a computer in the way they will experience it on a real exam.

Summing up the above, I would like to thank the creators of this manual. If the wishes are taken into account and an improved version appears, then the value of this resource will increase even more.
