English by Red Murphy fourth edition. About Raymond Murphy and his textbook

Perhaps, for any person who has begun or continues to study English, there are two words that chill the soul and make you wake up in a cold sweat - these are “spelling” and “grammar”.

And, since we are taught from childhood to face our fears, today we will try to get rid of one of them together.

Ladies and gentlemen, here are the top 10 grammar books for you. Let's start our review with beginner's guides:

1. The Good Grammar Book

Level: Elementary-Lower Intermediate

The Good Grammar Book is intended for learners of English and can be used from the Elementary level. The authors themselves created a book for self-study.

The book consists of 21 sections, each section begins with an introduction and a test (the test is designed to identify gaps in your knowledge). At the end of the section, you will also find a test that will help you understand how well you have mastered a particular topic.

The grammar in the book is presented in small portions, in several lines, followed by reinforcement exercises. this material. Pretty good textbook simple explanations which will help you understand grammar better of English language.

2. Essential Grammar in Use

Level: Elementary-Pre-Intermediate

Essential Grammar in Use, also known as "Red Murphy", came later, after such a successful debut of "Blue Murphy" (we will talk about it below), after which both books began to be distinguished by color.

"Red Murphy" deals with the topics that usually take place at the Elementary-Pre-Intermediate levels.

There are two editions of "red Murphy", with and without answers, respectively, this textbook can be used both for classroom work and for self-study of English language.

The book consists of 114 independent lessons, which can be studied in any order.

Each lesson consists of theory on the left and exercises on the right.

Traditionally, there is also a test to identify problem areas.

If your level is higher, then you should pay attention to the grammatical aids given in the article below.

3. English grammar in Use

Who doesn't know Old Man Murphy? This book also goes under code name"Blue Murphy", and in Russian as "blue Murphy".

The grammar in Blue Murphy is laid out in a very simple, "human" language, so it can be used starting from the Pre-Intermediate level.

This is a grammar guide, each of which is accompanied by reinforcement exercises.

Consists of 136 lessons, each of which is devoted to a separate grammatical topic. One grammatical topic occupies an entire spread of the textbook, on the left of which you will find an explanation, and on the right - exercises for it.

Each of the lessons is independent and can be studied in any order. A bonus to the lessons is a test to determine your level of English, as well as gaps in your knowledge.

Can be used on its own or in English lessons. Murphy is perhaps the classic of English grammar.

And you should know this textbook if you want to pass for your own in English learning circles.

4. A Practical English Grammar

Level: Intermediate

A practical English Grammar is a reference book of the English language. It does not contain exercises itself, but it comes with two collections of exercises, topics in the handbook.

After Murphy, characterized by simplicity and conciseness, A Practical English Grammar can plunge you into a real shock.

This is an extremely broad and deep presentation of English grammar, with many uses, exceptions, and examples. Perhaps one of the most detailed and in-depth editions of practical English grammar.

However, this guide should be used rather as additional allowance for learning English, to understand the details and nuances, since it is not practically possible for me to put everything that is stated in one chapter of this book into my head.

You can also use it to find the information you need, Thompson's table of contents is quite convenient and allows you to quickly find necessary information. The style of the guide is rather dry and academic, without illustrations and jokes.

Workbooks resemble their "parent" in everything and may seem boring to you.

However, they are quite useful for working through English grammar. Collections contain answers and can be used independently.

5. Oxford Practice Grammar

Level: Intermediate

Oxford Practice Grammar, if you follow the words of its publishers, will provide you necessary material to pass the FCE (First Certificate in English). The structure of this textbook is very similar to the Murphy structure above, as each topic also takes up one spread, with theory on the left and work-out exercises on the right. The book consists of 153 lessons grouped under thematic titles. Every 5-6 lessons there is a test that will help you test your knowledge of the previous topics, the book also contains a test to test your knowledge of the English language and identify problem areas. Suitable for both home use and classroom use. Among the advantages of the book is the fact that each of the lessons begins with illustrations or dialogue, which helps to spice up the dullness of others. grammar guides, as well as the fact that in the book there are sometimes quite atypical and interesting tasks, as well as tasks that will subsequently be on FCE. The disadvantages include stinginess and even a certain lack of theoretical material.

6. Longman English Grammar Practice

Level: Intermediate

Longman English Grammar Practice is designed for Intermediate level students. It can be used both for independent work and for work with a teacher. Contains 16 topics, each of which is divided into several subtopics. Each of the subtopics occupies a spread, which outlines both theory and reinforcement exercises. The theory is delivered in portions, after the theory, practical exercises follow. The last exercise is about using grammar in context, usually a fascinating story with an illustration that summarizes all the knowledge gained in the section. The book can be worked through in any order. Enough good tutorial English with a sufficient number of both theoretical and practical exercises. The disadvantages include the basic presentation of grammar, without nuances and details.

7. Cambridge Grammar for IELTS

Level: Upper-Intermediate

The Cambridge Grammar for IELTS is designed for those wishing to take the exam with by the same name. Designed for students on their own, but can also be used as a textbook in the classroom. It also contains a diagnostic test to determine the level, which will allow you to highlight problem areas and focus on their development. The lessons in the book are not interconnected, so they can be worked out in any order. Consists of 25 lessons. Each of the lessons consists of 4 parts: "Context Listening", which introduces the listener to the new grammar, and also trains listening comprehension; "Grammar", which contains theory; "Grammar exercises", which contains working out exercises, and "Test practice", which contains an examination task. On the plus side, there is a fairly detailed presentation of grammar with examples, as well as "Grammar extra", a section that provides additional interesting information on the topic, for example, the use of modal verbs in official documents. Of the minuses - the presentation of grammar is complex and not very logically organized, which makes it difficult to understand. Each of the sections contains 4 small grammar exercises to work out a new grammar, which is clearly not enough to master the topic.

8. Advanced Grammar in Use

Level: Advanced

Advanced Grammar in Use is a book in the same series as Essential Grammar in Use and English Grammar in Use, also known as Murphy's "red" and "blue", but breaking with tradition, this book is authored by Martin Hewings. This book is intended for advanced English learners, mainly used on its own to improve English English grammar. The structure resembles its predecessors, and consists of 120 sections, each of which occupies a page spread, on the left - an extensive theory, on the right - exercises. The presentation of the theory is quite simple and successful, contains many useful information, exceptions and nuances of use, which will really allow you to improve your English. Sections are self-contained and can be completed in any order. First, it is recommended to take a test to identify problem areas (the test is also in the book), then proceed to the study of problem sections. The only downside to this tutorial is an insufficient amount exercises with a huge amount of theoretical information, therefore, in order to master a particular topic, you will have to use additional materials. All in all, a good book for self-improvement.

You should also pay attention to a series of grammar aids for children and adults:

9.Round up

Level: Starter-Upper-Intermediate

The Round up series of the British publishing house Longman consists of 7 books. It is intended for children and adolescents and is probably well known to those children who studied English in the post-Soviet era. This is a very popular series and is often used by schools and courses in English as it has a number of advantages. Firstly, this is a very colorful edition, which is a definite plus for children. After all, at the sight of gray grammar books with monotonous exercises, they immediately change their faces and, remembering grammar exercises, involuntarily shudder. Information is presented in the form of tables with examples and situations close to real ones. The exercises are designed for both writing and oral workout grammatical structures, there are exercises for group work. It can also be used for independent study of the English language, as the series contains detailed explanations for each section, as well as exercises for repeating the material covered. Grammar is presented in portions, each new topic is introduced by dialogue, often a joke, accompanied by a funny illustration. In general, this series is replete with illustrations and exercises that are interesting for children, but, on the other hand, provides a sufficient amount of exercises for mastering new grammar. So, if you want to reduce your child's stress in learning English, feel free to opt for Round-up.

10. Enterprise Grammar Books

Level: Beginner-Intermediate

In general, the Enterprise series consists of "Student's Book", "Workbook" and "Grammar Book" for additional grammar work, but can also be used on its own. In my opinion, one of the best grammar books, especially for Pre-intermediate levels, Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate. The series consists of 4 levels, the whole theory is placed at the beginning of the lesson, followed by exercises to study it. There are many exercises, they are quite dynamic and allow you to work out new grammatical structures well. After 2-3 lessons, there are exercises for repetition and study of several topics studied. The undoubted advantage of this particular series is the exercises for paraphrasing and turning one grammatical structure into another. Very good grammar book, more suitable for class work as it does not contain keys. At the end of the books there are tests to check the learned material.

In an interview, Michael Swan, a well-known English grammarian, admitted that he often receives letters from English learners asking them to remove the third person “-s” ending. singular in Present Simple, and a friend of mine even suggested organizing a movement to eliminate confusion in English grammar, the abolition of articles, and most tenses. You can join this movement or write to Michael Swan, or you can just learn grammar from one of the above textbooks. It's up to you and in any case I wish you success in learning English via Skype!

Big and Friendly family EnglishDom

There is hardly a person among English learners who has not heard the name of the author of books - Raymond Murphy. Red textbook - desk book and teachers and students around the world. For over 30 years, it has been the number one selling grammar book. The textbooks in question belong to the English In series of manuals. Use Raymond Murphy (pictured below on the left) and other authors, which is published by the University of Cambridge.

History of textbooks

Raymond Murphy is an American who taught English in Germany. Over time, experience with foreign students allowed him to create a textbook that could be used all over the world. In total, the course has 3 textbooks - red for beginners (Elementary Grammar in Use), blue (Intermediate Grammar in Use) and green (Advanced Grammar in Use). Below we will consider what each of the textbooks includes and how to study them on your own in order to achieve positive results.

Before considering the features of each of the books, it is worth noting them. common features- all of them consist of lessons (unit), including one or more grammar topics on two pages (one - theory, the other - practice), applications and keys to exercises for verification. The theory passed can be consolidated directly in the book and it is advisable to keep notes with a simple pencil in order to correct errors during testing or in the future when repeating there were no ready-made answers to tasks.

All textbooks are written in English, but work is underway on the Russian version of the publications, which will explain in detail the aspects of foreign language that are of particular difficulty for students.

Red

The textbook "Raymond Murphy. Elementary Grammar in Practice" consists of 107 lessons, 6 applications, additional exercises and keys to all tasks. This textbook is recommended for those students who can read English, have just started learning the language or have been learning for a long time, but there are topics in which incomprehensible moments remain. Only the most necessary grammar for mastering the basic level is considered here. The structure of the textbook allows you to go through topics both step by step and selectively, as there are links to related topics. The textbook has an audio with voice acting of examples from the theoretical part of the lessons. At the end of the book there is a self-test - a questionnaire that includes all the topics of the course from the textbook, which allows you to identify sections of grammar that are poorly studied and need to be repeated.

The applications cover topics such as:

  • Irregular Verbs;
  • phrasal verbs;
  • spelling (letter-by-letter pronunciation of a word);
  • short forms of verbs.

This textbook is suitable for those whose language level corresponds to A1, A2 and B1 on the European Language Proficiency scale.

Blue

The next textbook in the series, authored by Raymond Murphy, is a blue-covered textbook that includes 147 lessons, 7 appendices, including additional material with grammar tables (complete table of irregular verbs, differences between American and British variants of the language), exercises for self-examination and answers to tasks. This edition has an additional textbook with exercises (English Grammar in Use. Supplrmentary exercises) and a CD with voice acting of examples from units.

It is suitable for those who want to know the language at the level of B1 and B2.

Green

Another textbook is a practical grammar for an advanced level. It was not written by Raymond Murphy, but by Martin Hevings. But due to the fact that he complements the line of textbooks "Raymond Murphy. English Grammar in Use" he is called "green Murphy". it latest edition in the line and is a kind of Everest, which, if they want to, but many students cannot conquer for many reasons, one of which is complexity. It consists of 100 units. Unlike two previous books here the features and subtleties of the use of English grammar are considered. This textbook does not additional book with exercises, but there is a disc.

This textbook is an excellent choice for those who want to know English at the level of C1 and C2 native speakers. The course of this textbook will help to pass international exams- TOEFL and IELTS.

Each of the courses presented in the textbooks involves systematic study at least three times a week for 60 minutes. This approach will allow you to achieve positive results and test them in practice. The in Use series involves self-study, and if during the learning process the student has problems understanding the material presented, then you can use video tutorials from English teachers in free access on the Internet or ask friends who are native speakers for help.

The total circulation of this manual is more than ten million copies. The blue Murphy, as this teacher's textbook from the UK is called, is well-deserved recognition among both teachers and learners of English.
This textbook is designed for people who speak English at an intermediate level.
It can be used both in class and for self-study.

The level of this textbook, however, is somewhat higher than the Intermediate level according to the Headway textbook, the level scale of which is considered the main one in English courses. In fact, the grammar in English Grammar in Use is given in a volume sufficient to pass the First Certificate in English (FCE), which corresponds to the Advanced (Advanced) level in Headway. However, all aspects of grammar are explained plain language, so understanding even the most complex issues should not be difficult.

The book successfully combines both a reference book on English grammar and a collection of exercises to consolidate what has been learned.
It is divided into 136 sections (units - Units), each of which explains and reinforces a certain aspect of grammar and occupies a whole turn: on the left half - theory, on the right - practice. All units are independent and can be completed in any order.

On this page you can download not only four editions of Murphy's textbook, but also computer and audio CDs, manuals with additional exercises, etc.

This book for intermediate and more advanced students combines reference grammar and practice exercises in a single volume.

The continuation of this tutorial was "Blue Murphy"

English Grammar in Use>by Raymond Murphy(Raymond Murphy) for more advanced students ( intermediate). Raymond Murphy himself was an American teacher of English as a foreign language. Then, he left for Germany, where he continued to teach English to the Germans. It was there that this textbook was born, based on American practicality and German quality, which brought Raymond Murphy worldwide fame.

Once I received a letter from Canada from a married couple, my former students. They said that they were taking English courses for newcomers(those who have recently moved to Canada for permanent residence) by different materials including this tutorial.

Has already . Pictured here is the first edition, in paperback. In my opinion, the most successful, and, by the way, the cheapest option. On the this moment(2017) the 4th edition is sold online, well structured, color and without typos. There are editions with keys and without.

In the textbook, vocabulary (words) is very carefully and practically selected. Everything is only necessary, within the “1st thousand”. Print this edition steadily every year (probably without a license). I came across Kiev, Moscow and Bulgarian editions. Some have a lot of typos.

In subsequent editions, the textbook is already in color, pictures are changed, several topics are added, something is corrected, chapters are swapped. Some proposals were voiced by the actors. Also on the disk there is a program of additional exercises. Well, in general, the same thing. The price and weight of the book (paper quality) have increased significantly.

it First level, basics of English grammar. Everything in the book is in English, so it is hardly possible to start learning the language from “0” on your own. This site was created to help you start learning English on your own.

Explanations are short, without "water", sometimes schematic. Lots of pictures. The continuation of this textbook is Murphy Blue, for intermediate students. The logic is the same, but the vocabulary and grammar are much deeper.

Foreword to Raymond Murphy's "Essential Grammar in Use" (short translation):

Student (working alone):

… Don't learn all the chapters from beginning to end. It is better to choose the chapters that you need, where you have problems. Use the book like this:
- Browse the table of contents and select the desired chapter
- Study the left side (there is a theory)
- Do exercises on the right
- Check the result in keys
- Repeat the theory again if necessary

Teacher:

This is primarily a grammar, not a book like a conventional English textbook
- this is a book for beginners, but not from a complete “0” (and far from covering all grammar)
- combines handbook and exercises
- Can be used as a tutorial or supplementary material

Book structure:

107 chapters ( units) independent of each other
- 6 extras ( appendix)
- keys to exercises ( keys)

Level:

For beginners (elementary) students, as well as can be used by intermediate level students who have “lame” grammar. Explanations are as simple and short as possible with illustrations
- vocabulary in the book is strictly limited (the first thousand words)

How to use the book:

Can be used for self-study, as well as additional material for any course
- can be used as an elementary reference
- when used in courses, it can be used to instantly consolidate the material covered or to return to the topics covered and work on the mistakes.
- you can use the left side of the book for explanations in class, but remember, the book is more suitable for self-study and as a reference.
- in most cases, the teacher is advised to explain the material on his own, give exercises, and then use the left side as a reference when checking the house. tasks.
- it would be good for the teacher to use the book to review what has been learned and independent work students on the mistakes in the relevant chapters ( units).
