There is a special atmosphere here: street musicians and artists, old houses, elegant benches and lanterns. Everything is so cute, cozy and compact. By right, the Arbat is the place where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of the cars of the big city.

Currently, the Arbat delights guests not only with architectural sights, but also with numerous entertainment museums where you can have a great rest with the whole family and have fun. Today I will tell you about what you can see and where to go on the Old Arbat.

Getting to the Arbat is not difficult. It is enough just to go down to the Moscow subway. Near the pedestrian street there are two metro stations: "Arbatskaya" of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya (blue) and Filevskaya (blue) lines and "Smolenskaya" of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya (blue) line. The Arbatskaya station is located at the beginning of the pedestrian Arbat, and the Smolenskaya station is at the end.

Of course, the metro is not the only means of transport. The Arbat can also be reached by city buses and trolleybuses. It is not difficult to do this. Look for buses 6, 39, or trolleybuses 2, 44 to the Dom Knigi stop, as well as buses 64, 132 and trolleybuses 10, 39, 79 to the Smolenskaya metro stop.

In good weather, you can walk to the Arbat on foot, both from Red Square and from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. I'm attaching a map to illustrate.

Attractions Arbat

Arbat is a historical street, known since early XVI in. It is not surprising that one can talk about each house here for an infinitely long time. Modern look streets was formed in the XVIII - early XX centuries. It was the center of the Moscow aristocracy. Well-known nobles sought to have their own "comfortable nest" on the Arbat. The Tolstoys, Gagarins, Dolgorukies, Golitsins, Trubetskoys lived here. Were passing through and not long time lived Pushkin and Tolstoy, Gogol and Chekhov, Blok and Saltykov-Shchedrin. At the beginning of the last century, a tram even ran along the street, and only in 1986 it became pedestrian.

Let's take a short walk along the Arbat to get acquainted with its main attractions.

The building of the former restaurant "Prague"

Leaving the Arbatskaya metro station, at the very beginning of the street you can find building of the restaurant "Prague". This first-class Moscow restaurant in different years Chekhov, Tolstoy and Repin visited, and the chef of the restaurant became famous throughout Russia with his crown cake "Prague". After the Revolution, the building housed the dining room of Mosselprom, which Mayakovsky often visited.

Interesting fact! This dining room also lit up on the television screen. It was here that Ippolit Matveyevich from the film "The Twelve Chairs" took Lisa to dine.

Behind the restaurant along the Old Arbat stretches a whole galaxy of aristocratic mansions, each of which can be called a local landmark.

Over time, most of them were turned into apartment buildings (residential buildings, apartments in which were rented out), thanks to which the Arbat became the temporary home of many famous people of his era.

So, in house No. 4 they found a temporary shelter for I.A. Bunin, A.I. Levitov and K.D. Balmont, and L.N. Tolstoy. In the neighboring house number 11, decorated with masks of lions, there was a "Moscow pawnshop". House number 13 - became the home for the artist A.V. Moravov and opera singer E.K. Pavlovskaya.

In the house number 15 A.S. Pushkin drew up documents when he rented an apartment for his young wife, later, at the beginning of the 20th century, one of the first Moscow cinemas was located on the second floor. Pushkin often visited his friend, diplomat A.Ya. Bulgakov in the house at Arbat, 20. Later, the editorial office of the Moscow magazine was located here.

House number 17 belonged to the Fonvizin family. Here, in different time the artists Pervukhin and Yuon stayed, for many years the son of Korney Chukovsky, Nikolai, lived.

House number 23 has a rather rich history. So, from the window of this house Arbat depicted in watercolor V.V. Nechaev. This picture can now be seen in the museum-apartment of Pushkin. It is believed that this is the only painting depicting the Arbat from the time of Pushkin. At the end of the XIX century. the house housed the Echkina hotel, equipped with an electric elevator and an internal telephone - an unprecedented luxury at that time. The porter was on duty at the entrance to the hotel.

House number 25 belonged to the society of Russian doctors, and house number 31 in the twentieth century. "chosen" by the freedom-loving Moscow intelligentsia.

House number 35, known in Moscow as "House with Knights"- most high structure on the Arbat. Until the beginning of the 20th century. it was a real skyscraper with stained glass windows and marble stairs. AT Soviet time, like most of the adjacent houses, the "House with the Knights" was turned into a communal apartment. Currently, it is occupied by the central house of the actor, renting out part of the premises for numerous offices.

Opposite the Actor's house restored after the bombing of the Great Patriotic War building of the State Academic Theatre. E. Vakhtangov. Numerous tourists near the theater are collected by the golden figure of the fountain "Princess Turandot".

The fountain "Princess Turandot" is always crowded. “Desert photos” can only be taken at 7 am

House number 37 has become an informal landmark of the Arbat. After the death of Viktor Tsoi, his fans turned the wall of this house into a memorial of memory, popularly known as "Wall of Tsoi".

The wall of memory of Viktor Tsoi is an informal attraction of the Arbat

The poet P. Antokolsky lived for some time in a communal apartment at Arbat, 28, and Bulat Okudzhava spent his entire childhood in a communal apartment at house No. 43. Nearby you can see his monument.

Many prominent personalities lived on the Arbat in different years. So Bulat Okudzhava, as before, is walking near his own house

A.A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky and A.N. Pleshcheev, relatives of A.I. Herzen, and writer A. Rybakov lived in house number 51 for many years. By the way, the house itself "lit up" in his works "Shot", "Dagger" and "Children of the Arbat".

The writers chose another building on the Arbat, house number 38, where they gathered to visit the prose writer B. Zaitsev. By the way, it was at Zaitsev that Bunin met his future wife, Vera.

House No. 44 once belonged to great-great-grandfather I.S. Turgenev, and then passed into the possession of the grandmother F.I. Tyutchev. In the 20th century, S.D. Krzhizhanovsky and N. Glazkov.

The blue building at Arbat 53 is one of the most famous buildings of the old street. It was here that A.S. brought his young wife on their wedding vacation. Pushkin. The young family did not live here for long, only a couple of months, leaving their imprint here forever. Later, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov stayed within its walls, Tsvetaeva lived, and when a theater was located here after the Revolution, Mayakovsky and Meyerhold were members of the artistic council. Now posted here Museum-apartment of Pushkin on the Arbat. The very same loving couple of young Pushkins, already in bronze, continues to "walk along the Arbat" with opposite side streets.

In the house next door, at Arbat, 55 - another museum-apartment of Andrey Bely.

Gradually Old Arbat overlooks the busy Smolensky Boulevard. Next to Smolensko-Sennaya Square rises a grandiose Foreign Ministry building- one of seven Stalin skyscrapers.

And on the opposite side, the Arbat completes the trading house, where the Seventh Continent supermarket is located. In the 1930s, there was Shop "Torgsin"(trade with foreigners), where goods could be obtained in exchange for foreign currency and valuables. By the way, "Torgsin" as well as house number 51 became the hero of an immortal novel. The store was mentioned by Bulgakov in his novel The Master and Margarita.

Of course, not only the buildings are the sights of the Arbat. Street artists and musicians give it a special atmosphere and charm. If you want, you can even commission your own portrait.

Old Arbat: history and sights of the main pedestrian street of Moscow. Excursions, museums, former tenement houses of the Arbat; addresses where celebrities lived.

Arbat is a pedestrian street in the center of Moscow with a length of 1.2 km. It is located 5 minutes walk from the Arbatskaya metro station. The main metropolitan promenade is a constant point of attraction for tourists and vacationers. A special holiday atmosphere always reigns here: “free” artists, street musicians gather, excursions, festivals and flash mobs are held.

We love the Old Arbat and Muscovites. They appreciate it as a place with a rich biography. Each Arbat house is a pantry interesting stories and mysteries that can be unraveled endlessly.

Old Arbat: historical background

The oldest Moscow street got its name from the Orbat area, the center of which became in the 16-17th centuries. Muscovites are characterized by a “kaking” pronunciation, so the first sound was gradually replaced by “a”. First written evidence refers to 1475 and is associated with the all-Moscow fire. An entry in the chronicles reads: "Nikifor Basenkov got burned on Orbat."

Opinions differ on the origin of the name. Some researchers believe that it comes from the Mongolian "arba". Once there was Kolymazhnaya Sloboda, the artisans of which made wagons, including carts. According to another hypothesis, the name comes from the Arabic "arbad", which means "suburbs" in translation. It is noteworthy that, unlike other central Moscow streets, the Arbat has never changed its name.

Until 1812 the street was built up wooden houses and churches that completely burned down after the capture by Napoleon. After the war, stone buildings began to be erected on the Arbat. He acquired a respectable front appearance. Since the 18th century, the artisans and merchants were supplanted by the nobility. It was inhabited by representatives of noble aristocratic families: Tolstoy, Sheremetev, Golitsyn.

Gradually, the nobility was replaced by the Moscow intelligentsia. In count famous writers, poets and musicians who lived here in different years, the Arbat surpasses all other areas of Moscow.

At the end of the 19th century, chic shops, hotels and restaurants appeared on the street, in particular, the Prague tavern. From the 1880s, a horse-drawn tram was launched along the Arbat, and from 1908 - a tram. In 1909, the opening of the first site of the city cinematograph, the Khudozhestvenny electro-theatre, took place on Arbatskaya Square.

Former tenement house S. E. Tryndina and A. Shchepoteva / Lori Photobank

Almost all of the current development of the Arbat is tenement houses built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The only exceptions are a few two-story mansions, in particular, the house of N. S. Khitrovo (No 53, p. 1), where in 1831, after his marriage to Natalya Goncharova, A. S. Pushkin rented an apartment.

The Arbat acquired its recognizable appearance in 1985, when it became a pedestrian zone. Here appeared paving stones, retro lanterns, vases with flowers and benches for rest. The facades of houses have also changed: they have become multi-colored. Since then, the first floors of the buildings have been occupied by numerous antique and souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. The street was chosen by artists and musicians of all stripes, whose performances attract a flanking audience.

Sights and iconic places of the Arbat

The main attractions are associated with the memorial apartments famous personalities. Museums of A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, M. Tsvetaeva are located here. Noteworthy:

  • theatre. E. Vakhtangov;
  • sculptural composition "Pushkin and Natalie";
  • monument to Bulat Okudzhava;
  • Perfume Museum;
  • Hard Rock Cafe with a collection of personal items of famous musicians.

Religious places of the Arbat - the wall of Viktor Tsoi / Photobank Lori

The informal dominant of the Arbat is the wall of Viktor Tsoi, which arose here after his tragic death in 1990. The usual wall of one of the houses on Krivoarbatsky per. has become a mecca for fans of the rock music legend of perestroika Russia. It is decorated with portraits of Tsoi, words from cult songs and sincere declarations of love.

Unusual excursions along the Old Arbat

The first rule for choosing excursions in places like the Arbat is a small number of participants. Take my word for it, moving around the local alleys in a group of 30-40 people is a mockery. Therefore, we will recommend excursions using the example of the Tripster Internet service, where the routes are organized by local residents. Walks are offered both individual and group - up to 10 people.

I immediately want to offer you something unusual, like an excursion - about the fate and love stories Arbat celebrities. Or 2-hour, which you can take part in with the whole family.

There is also a route for connoisseurs of architecture: which passes through Arbat and Prechistenka streets and introduces everyone to the unique architectural style.

But we stop ourselves, because if you are on the Old Arbat for the first time, then it is better to start with the classics. There are proven routes for this:

#2. Davydov Hostel

Frankly, there are about a dozen hostels on the Arbat (prices are about the same), but Davydov is the most favorite! In addition to shared rooms with bunk beds, there is a choice of 2-bed rooms. They are more expensive, but very comfortable, take a look at them. The breakfasts are amazing: tasty and varied. Address: st. Arbat 25.

#3. AZIMUT Hotel Smolenskaya

For those who want more modern and spacious, on the street. Smolenskaya, 3 minutes from the Arbat, stands the glass tower of the AZIMUT hotel chain. Choose one of the rooms on the upper floors (starting from the middle) and you will get a view of either Moscow City or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - one of Moscow's skyscrapers.

Excursions in Moscow at the best prices

The most interesting excursions in Moscow are routes from local residents. They are created by creative people, ready to “hand over” to you unusual places, alleys hidden from the eyes, panoramic platforms. And the guides will tell you how you can save money in the capital.

The name "Arbat", according to the most common version, is of Arabic origin and translates as "suburb, suburb". AT XV-XVI centuries The Arbat was the name given to the vast built-up area to the west of the Moscow Kremlin. It was at the Arbat Gates, where, as is known, the roads to Smolensk and Novgorod intersected with the Belogorodskaya wall, a square was formed. The territory more than once became a place of struggle against foreigners: here in 1439, Russian troops repelled the raids of the Kazan Khan Ulu Muhammad, in 1611 a detachment of Polish-Lithuanian invaders was defeated here, and in 1612 at the Arbat Gate was the headquarters of the command of the Second militia. The square was not spared by the revolutionary events of the 20th century.

The wall of the White City, which crossed the modern square, stood until the 1770s; in 1792, the Arbat tower was dismantled along with the gate. The square acquired its current appearance in the 1930s and 1940s.

Old Arbat is one of the most "literary" streets in Moscow. Many outstanding masters of Russian literature lived and worked here, including the writer, poet and popularly beloved bard Bulat Okudzhava. His first place of residence in Moscow was one of the communal apartments at No. 43 on the Arbat. Love for the legendary Moscow street Okudzhava carried through all his work. Everyone knows the lines of his soulful song: “Ah, Arbat, my Arbat, you are my vocation ...”

In 2002, at the intersection of Arbat and Plotnikov Lane, near house number 43, a sculptural composition appeared that not only immortalized the image of Okudzhava, but also recreated in a peculiar way “a piece of the Arbat courtyard”, where the childhood years of the famous bard passed. The authors of the work were the sculptor G. Frangulyan, the architects I. Popov and V. Proshlyakov. According to their plan, two bronze arches were placed on the cobblestone platform, forming a gateway, benches and a table were installed. The arches are "written" with quotations from the poet's works. Okudzhava himself comes out of the "Arbat courtyard" - a bronze figure about 2.5 meters high. Carefully thought-out details (a shadow laid out on paving stones, quotes in the style of courtyard inscriptions, living trees, etc.) together form a single composition, which is not only a monument to Okudzhava, but to the entire Old Arbat.
