The problem of the image and technologies for its implementation is dealt with by the scientific and applied branch of human science called imageology. The method of influence is also determined - shocking or trusting, mysteriously - detached or accessible.

Image is a collective concept. This is a look, a form of a person's life manifestation, thanks to which powerful personal and business qualities are exhibited “on people”. The image also acts as a human recognition, evaluative attitude. The image is formed both consciously and involuntarily.

All this, however, is unacceptable for management activities, because this type of activity is not a theatrical stage and not a political arena. It has other rules for communicating with people and exerting targeted influence on them. Meanwhile, this does not free the manager, especially the higher administrative levels(commanders), from underestimating the role of personal image in business practice and the need for painstaking work on it.

If we generally agree with this logic, the reputation of a professional is not the main thing in success.

Admit how much time you spend growing vocational training compared to working on the image? Many times more, right? Then another question: what image do you have now and what, in your opinion, should it be? People rarely ask themselves the first question, because they believe that others think of them in the same way that they think of themselves, which, as a rule, is not true. But even if asked, it is difficult to get an answer to it. The easiest way is to ask people around, but it also largely depends on their friendly attitude towards you.

Tough situations at work often feel like advanced versions of the game of "broken phone" that you've probably watched with a laugh.

The "broken phone" is ubiquitous. To avoid this effect, double-check how your potential critics (that is, everyone involved in the project) understand what you said.

Given this effect, your ideas must be stated simply and read unambiguously, otherwise they will be distorted.

If someone starts to criticize your thoughts, which he heard in someone else's presentation, ask him to repeat what exactly, in his opinion, you said and in what context.

In addition to controlling attempts to actively and passively distort your words, you should make efforts not to get into situations that end badly, even if it is not your fault. And you need to do this constantly.

For example, after analyzing a failed situation in which it was not your fault, you should tell everyone that your fault was not found, and not rely on the correct presentation of information by third parties. You have to “cleanse” the minds of others from distorted ideas about you and your ideas. But this should not be done spontaneously, not immediately after the discovery of a distortion, but at a convenient moment after some time.

Being 5% wrong means being 50% guilty.

This rule is contrary to any idea of ​​​​justice, and therefore is perceived extremely painfully. Recall one of the investigations into organizational failure. Usually these "exercises" are officially called "analysis of how to avoid similar problems in the future", but often they turn into a witch hunt. Reports rarely note who was right. But initially they suspect that everyone was to some extent to blame!



Try to understand this situation: you were deceived, but not by someone, but by a member of your own team, so the whole team risks not reaching the finish line. Others see that your partner is to blame in general, but the team didn’t come! This is how you become an accomplice to failure. And point!

Of course, you will immediately point your finger at him, and the boss will say something like this: “Learn to find a compromise”, “You are out of luck”, “You are always right, but everyone is wrong” or “You turn people against you, so next to they do stupid things with you." That is, the partner is to blame, but the task is frustrated with your participation. It turns out that you are dirty too ...



That's why, even if you have emails confirming the fact that you are not guilty, someone will find words in them that will cast doubt on your alibi. And even without this, you can be accused of inaccuracies. That is, there is always a way to write off 5% of the blame on you, but because of them you will be on the list of the guilty.

Because such reports most often do not mention the proportion of guilt, and only knows that you are also to blame. This kind of social cruelty, where lack of guilt is mixed with actual guilt, is one of the main reasons why it is better to find a mediocre solution to the conflict than to later explain that you did everything possible to avoid failure, and thereby tarnish your image.

The origin of the concept of "image" very accurately characterizes its meaning: an image is not what a person really is, not a set of his personal characteristics, but an image that is created in relation to this person by the people around him, or people who create an impression of him with the help of mass media. Often the image of a person is very different from the personality itself.

In recent decades, the issue of image formation has become very great importance. Human influence on most environment is carried out precisely through the image, therefore right choice image is the key to the success of many events. The problem of creating an image is especially important for politicians, representatives of show business, people creative professions. But these people are traditionally engaged in image creation. As politicians increasingly turn to the media to publicize themselves instead of touring for live communication, the way they present their image will become increasingly important. The mass media deal mainly with the image, their representatives know how to present people and events and how readers, listeners and viewers will perceive them.

It is for this reason that many organizations now send their employees to training courses on how to stand in front of a TV camera and talk to journalists. However, learning to communicate with media representatives loses all meaning if the speaker does not take into account such an important point as self-presentation. The reputation of an organization or company can go down or up depending on how its employees portray themselves in the media.

People, as well as the media, approach the assessment of society in terms of image. With the help of the image, a person shows what place in society he assigns to himself. For example, a female entrepreneur may in various situations present herself as a feminist, as an entrepreneur, or as a working mother, and use these labels in order to better understand which cell of society she is in.

At any given time, society has a particular value system. The image that a person demonstrates in society shows how these values ​​are consonant with his beliefs. For example, in the sixties, many people chose the image of rebels, protesting against the conservatism of the fifties. In the eighties, the image of a smart businessman became fashionable, then it became fashionable to be an informal professing alternative views.

1.2 Self-image. Factors influencing the formation of the image.

The image presented by a person to the world around him is often perceived by other people as a reflection of his level of self-esteem. Demonstration of interest in self-improvement, expressed in the desire to gain a clear understanding of own psychology or the desire to correct their self-presentation shows that a person has reached a certain level of self-esteem, has taken place as a person and has the potential for growth and improvement.

The ability to present oneself includes the ability to appreciate one’s positive aspects and understand what weak spots. What a particular person may perceive as a disadvantage is not necessarily so for others. For example, if two meet shy person, their timidity helps them feel sympathy for each other. A person may be overweight and be ashamed of their size. But fat man A person who takes his complexes for granted, is healthy and cheerful, dresses with taste and realizes that he loves to communicate, can have a completely attractive image.

Self-image is subject to all sorts of influences, and most strong influence it is provided by parents and upbringing. The child is largely shaped by the parents, providing him with a certain view of himself. If a person was not sufficiently encouraged in childhood by parents and caregivers, he may develop a tendency to excessive self-criticism. Such a person will establish for himself and for others too high standards behavior and be upset because of the impossibility of achieving them.

Another factor influencing the formation of a person's idea of ​​himself is life experience. Many people, having only once experienced the unpleasant experience of speaking in front of an audience, consider themselves completely unsuitable for public speaking. The disapproving remarks of others only strengthen them in this opinion. If from day to day a person learns own experience and by the reaction of others that he is not appreciated, then self-esteem may be too heavy for him. The only counterbalance to this can be a sufficient supply of self-respect and awareness of one's achievements.

If self-esteem is too low, improving the "external" image will only have a limited effect. In this case, the problem should be solved with the help of a professional consultant, psychotherapist or psychoanalyst.

The level of self-esteem can be increased by working on the presentation of the image as a whole. For example, if a person has learned to overcome nervousness while speaking in public, others will notice his confidence and begin to react accordingly. The audience will be looking forward to what he has to say next. If a person cares about his appearance, others conclude that he respects and appreciates himself as an individual, and therefore is able to appreciate others.

At the heart of people's assessment of the appearance, statements and behavior of other people are two basic needs - identification and expression of individuality. People need belonging and identification with their own kind, and at the same time, they feel the need to assert their individuality. All people have both of these needs. They have a decisive influence on the desire of a person to present himself and his interaction with others.

A person can express belonging and identification with other people in the following ways:

Appearance. Clothing can signal that a person seeks to merge with certain group people that he is a member of a clan.

Posture and body language. Representatives of the same social group have similar mannerisms.

The manner of speaking. It is human nature to imitate in this the representatives of social groups attractive to him.

language. Many social groups have their own slang, incomprehensible to representatives of other groups.
